[PP|F17] <<Herculean Labor>> More Big Cats

Recommended Posts

<<Herculean Labor>>

Now that the fight was finally over, Chase wiped some sweat off of his forehead. The final statue was now in his possession, and he could feel somewhat stronger as is. His stats had gotten a relative boost, which was more than simply pleasant, to be honest. He looked over at NIGHT and then remembered about the cat ears, reaching a hand up to feel them somewhat dirtied. He quickly opened his menu and took out two orange crystals, offering one to NIGHT so she could clean herself up from falling down so much- because of the paralysis, of course. If anything, he was surprised she didn't faint after the last hit too, seeing how much thunder came out of the horse then.

"There's a last quest I want to try before giving it a break for today, if you want to as well? Oh, and uh. Tell me when you decide on your color for the cat ears, 'kay?", he asked her with a toothy grin, having put the rather distasteful battle already behind and looking forward to just making her the same accessory he was sporting, but for her to wear and enjoy all she wanted. "... You never told me, you want a tail to boot?", he added in the end, scratching his chin slightly and offering the same sheepish smile he did when he was embarrassed. At least he was still the same Chase she'd been leveling with this whole time.

"Thanks."

The orange crystals were very much appreciated, although NIGHT still had her queries about where exactly these items came from. She'd crushed it with a rough grip, the soothing wave trickling down on her form -- all at once, any dirt or grime that had decided to linger on her character was immediately washed away with a glow.

She'd let out an exhale, starting on her way back to town. It was when ChaseR piped up that she realized he hadn't registered her dismissal of his offer from earlier -- but it'd be a little awkward to turn him down by this point, right? Still, discussing this... uhh... curiosity made the woman shrink back into her tracksuit just a bit more. "Sure," she mentioned, in reply to the quest. "And... uh..."

Silence. Just the sound of shoes crunching dirt. "... Black, please."

Some further hesitation. "...And gold."

...

Oh god he was offering a tail too.

"N-no," she immediately spat out, almost jumping upwards in alarm. "No-- No, tails aren't necessary, t-thank you very much."

Chase gave NIGHT a quick nod, taking out a few cheap materials he'd gotten from an NPC store, beginning to work and put them together. He had the appropriate tools he usually carried around in his workshop, but this wasn't a working place. As such, he could only make vanity items and not too good in quality- at least on the finer side of details. Thankfully, clip-on ears didn't need that much finesse to make. While he worked on them on their way back, he remained quiet. By the time that they'd arrived, he'd something almost ready, at least one of the two sets. The black one, it seemed.

Despite her objection beforehand, Chase was happy that he heard her whisper for the second set, humming and throwing his head left and right whenever he wasn't working on anything major to his little 'masterpiece'. At least it was one in her eyes, seeing as this was mostly for her pleasure. It was good to practice on his crafts which he'd left behind a fair bit too, but... Regardless, they'd reached the settlement after a fair bit of walking and silence, as the bluehead momentarily put them away. "Oh, right. The quest is Herculean Labor on the... seventeenth. Uh, that's the Greek floor, isn't it?"

Sure enough, everything around them looked Greek. NIGHT hummed out her acknowledgement, lips pressed together tightly, trying to avert her gaze from her companion. Why'd she have to go ahead and roll with his scheme? Even as she was strolling along the path out of town in silence, she was certain a familiar heat hadn't left her ears.

It was in consistent silence that she'd continue travelling alongside the practicing artisan. The plains outside were wide and vast; some forests acted as borders between different regions of the floor, and a mountainous landscape hid behind their woodland barrier, Mount Olympus sitting tall and stretching up beyond the clouds above. She'd made her turns off the beaten path partway through the route towards the gods' abode, only occasionally glancing back at her travel partner, making sure he was still tagging along.

Before long, they'd reached the wilderness the Nemean pride called home. And with a tilt of her head -- still, no words exchanged -- she'd offered the lead to the search for their quarry to him.

Not that she'd wanted to delay seeing another cat, but...

By the time that they'd arrived in the wilderness, Chase had finished one of the two sets he was working on for the girls. He quickly stuffed them in his inventory and preemptively pulled his blade out, looking at her with a nod and just smiling. "We have to kill... uh... O-Oh.", he stammered upon opening up his quest log and wiped some sweat off his forehead, coughing dryly. Quickly, a trade prompt opened up and two vanity items appeared for NIGHT. "I know you said you didn't want it but just in case- uh. It might help us disguise from the lionesses.", he joked and laughed out loud, having made a black tail to go along with the ears in the end.

Surprising how he had already managed to make a full set while walking, but the tail wasn't that much more difficult. Regardless, he still didn't have one of his own but he could fix that up while they were making their way to the lion if it took that long. For now though, battle. No more cat fun for Chase. "Er... Three lionesses, to get back on track. We got it?", he asked while looking away from NIGHT, wanting to see if she'd try them on or not while not being looked at to avoid embarrassment.

Oh.

So he had heard her objection in the first place. And then continued to insist on making the ears anyway.

The realization struck NIGHT with just as much force from a tiger's swat and exactly the same amount of whiplash once the man had dragged in a tail into their trade window. A flicker of rage, embarrassment and regret swept past her pupils the moment he'd confirmed the exchange, and it took all her energy to force her lips not to curl up into a defeated smile.

So naturally, she accepted it. Jabbed the blue circle button with some amount of strength, before pulling her blade from the ether to her side. She'd hiss out a breath just as ChaseR shuffled past her, eyes set upon the field beyond.

All NIGHT proceeded to do was hammer against the ground past him, charging towards the nearest pride of enemies and slashing their health bars to near-orange.

When he saw NIGHT dash right past him, Chase was somewhat disappointed that he didn't see her donning the ears and tail he made her. No matter, it was still a battle they'd take seriously posing as cat-humans or whatever NIGHT wanted or not. "Following right up!", he shouted and ran right behind her, trying to slash widely at the lionesses. However, before he could launch his attack, one of them pounced onto his arm and bit deep and hard into it, causing bleeding even before she jumped out of the way of his attack.

It ended up only wounding one of them lightly, while the other two went away completely unscathed, roaring at them. Chase moved a hand over to the top of his wound, looking at it to see a gash left behind alongside the bleed effect over the damaged area. "T-Tch! They bite very damn hard, watch out.", he warned NIGHT and gave her another nod, as if giving her the pass to go on and attack them another time. They would cut through them all the same, even if they were more dangerous than the usual monsters they fought.

The thought that they were cats mattered less to her than the burning vortex within. Leave it to a moment of vulnerability in someone else's presence to screw her perception up. That hatred burned true in her sword's edge, the blade making an impossible cut to her enemy with its steel set ablaze with hazy, flaming darkness, eeking out a yelp of sorrow from the sole lioness struck down, the creature fading away into data.

And for their other quarry, only one had managed to get away with a chunk of its health left. She'd paced towards it still, before launching herself in a rush towards it, sword pressed to its side and forcing the blunt blade down upon its ribs. Her force had been violent, impactful, nearly toppling the invincible cat over and down to the ground -- and NIGHT might've done so too, if only the sliver of red in its gauge had fully been depleted with her act of anger.

Chase would have thought nothing was up if it weren't for all of the rage coming out with every single one of NIGHT's swings. Each seemed angrier than the rest, and even her blunt blade slashed through one of the lionesses. He quickly followed up on the openings she created in their small pack and let out a wide slash, only for the same lioness as before to bite his other arm this time around, refreshing the bleed effect and dealing that much more, annoyingly enough, damage to him.

He stepped back and groaned even more, feeling his arm somewhat numb- then again, that must have been him. No pain sensor whatsoever existed in Aincrad, so it must have been the mere thought of bleeding from a wound caused by a beast digging its teeth right through his skin- he wasn't helping it any, really. "It's almost down, can you kill her and wait for me to rest a moment?", he asked of NIGHT with a small smile, only for it to quickly fade as he tightened his grip with one arm over the other bleeding one.

If only she could. In her rage, all her motions had become practiced, subconcious; something the lioness seemed to pick up on and counter with a verity of jumps and leaps forwards and back in the player's futile effort to strike it down. When all was said and done, it was NIGHT who'd chosen to take her paces backwards, closing her eyes and expelling the heat from her head and her cheeks.

The kitty cat was sickening. No, she'd downright loved it to death, but if her anger had to be stuck, had to go somewhere...

NIGHT sank her blade into the dirt. Thinking like this wasn't healthy -- nay, it was beyond her to do so. Felt completely out of character, a pit churning in her stomach for that sudden compulsive and intrusive behaviour. She watched as the lioness switch its gaze towards ChaseR instead, as she took a second to clear her head.

Maybe this time she'd get the jump on it. Once she'd felt better about her darker thoughts.

A worried look was all that she could get out of Chase, who furrowed his brows and just looked in concern. He quickly picked up on the lioness glaring him down, ready to jump right at him, taking a deep breath and gulping as he prepared his blade for a counterattack. "NIGHT? Come on, snap out of it.", he tried to call out to her, only to get interrupted by the lioness jumping to pounce the bluehead. Before it got a chance to get another gnaw on his arm again, his blade began to form ice around him.

With a sudden slash, his sword practically split the lioness open, and he let out a sigh while slowly placing his blade back in its sheathe on his back. With the first of the two packs dealt with, he turned to NIGHT and approached her, still wearing his cat ears all the same as he rubbed her shoulder slightly. "... Are you alright? Something's up with you.". His comment didn't seem to be far off from the truth, and this was one of the only times he'd actually appeared somewhat sympathetic to anyone- disregarding whether he was at other times even if it didn't show.

"I'm fine," the woman curtly mentioned just as the lioness was torn asunder. She'd gently pried her companion's hand off her shoulder -- not that she didn't appreciate the gesture, but the kindness also stung after the extra 'gift' from earlier. The player was set on trying to refocus her vision on the present; with a couple of loose steps, she'd turned around just in time to catch the rest of their victims' pride scurry to their fallen comrades' side. "We should probably clear them out first, though."

One, two, three... four.

She wasn't sure if it was the counting that helped rope her thoughts back in order or if it was the cry from the maned kitten of the pack that shook her core just so. But in the same time its family started to charge towards the two swordsmen, NIGHT ushered herself forth to cut across the group in one sweep.

Hearing her lie to him so badly when something was clearly up didn't help bolster his confidence in her any. Any more slip ups and they'd be in big trouble. Watching her charge in and hit all of the pack though, he himself followed suit and did his best to cleave through them. One was frozen solid in a thick chunk of ice, missing its window to pounce on him, while the other three all got struck- no. That was just his eyes playing tricks on him. In fact, one of the lionesses took an extra hit to let one of them jump out of the way.

Before he could even realize what was going on, another lioness was gnawing out at his arm, getting a growl and angered kicks from Chase. It scuttered away quickly enough, but left him rubbing at the wound that was now bleeding just as much as before. Thankfully he couldn't feel it- shivers were sent down his back as soon as he even tried to imagine it, letting out a squeamish sigh. "L-Let's get this over with fast please."

Had the horizontal slash not been enough, at least the roiling blueberry acted enough of a distraction to cull the meek of the group apart. Still fueled by fury and judgement, Tsukuyomi's crescent was awake and alive with power, the raw darkness of the blade jolting forth to shatter apart the two struggling lionesses attempting to support their main fighter. It's ferocity carried that strike further, NIGHT caught unaware by the sword's capabilities of doing so, lashing out at the king just as the woman reeled back on a withdrawl.

Not enough to bring down the core of the pride, the player observed, hissing as the cat darted off towards ChaseR for another flurry of attacks. Left in the wake of the dissipating crystals, NIGHT watched for her companion's move, blade readied by her side just in case she'd need to act as clean up for their quarry. She'd covered the gap in silence with a brisk walk -- with their opponents on their last legs, there was no need for a rush.

Chase watched NIGHT finish the other two lionesses off, quickly making his advance to go in and sweep for the kill. And with that, he finally- no, that's not right. He hit, but the lion was still alive. No matter. It lost its window to attack due to his freeze and was now bleeding to death, with barely a sliver of health left. "... We won.", he said with a relaxed expression as he looked over to his companion while the oversized cat was still thawing out of the ice.

"NIGHT, please, did I do something? I have to know if you want me to help.", he asked with the same frown as before and sheathed his blade, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. "I understand if you don't want to talk about it, but at least... Was it me? Why you got so mad?", he trailed off and looked to the side at the dying lion, not saying anything and simply sighing out, putting both of his hands in his jacket's pockets.

NIGHT had almost wanted to grab him by the scuff of his tracksuit and bring him close, just to underline her anger. But she didn't, instead choosing to shoot her companion a powerful glare instead.

If looks could kill, the player would've been orange in seconds.

"You heard me from earlier," she stated, voice flat and a familiar terseness seeping back into her usual scowl. The blade in her hands was fading with a blip, and she let the weapon go before turning to face ChaseR completely, tepid. "That I didn't want your offered gifts in the first place. And yet you continued to insist on them later?"

She chewed on the silence between, eyes shifting across the scenery as she debated on bringing up the specifics of her new vanity equipment. "I really prefer not to have them," the player continued, "if you were going to give me the option in the first place."

A wider frown and almost self-regret took over Chase's expression, as he looked down at the ground. Being looked that way by a trusted ally, let alone her, packed a punch to the gut. "S-Sorry... I thought you meant you liked-", he abruptly stopped as he choked on his voice, trying to regain his composure. He looked over his shoulder at the lion behind them that just bled to death, looking at the shards that disappeared into thin air. "... Sorry...", he huffed out in a deep, melancholic sigh, feeling himself having somewhat trouble keeping up.

He quietly sat down on the ground with his legs pulled close to his chest, opening his menu to unequip these stupid blue cat ears he was wearing and just hugging his knees closer to himself, silent. "... I thought you'd like it, because we're friends...", he grumbled almost childishly, keeping his forehead on his knees and covering his face completely. Fucking hell, messing up every single time he tried to do somebody any good. And this time, it wasn't even because he'd mentioned DAY. Why did keeping things happy have to be so hard?

What.

NIGHT watched as the man fell to the ground, hugging himself in a tight cradle like a kid who'd done something wrong. One moment he was battered in scars, back straight and upright like a war hero-- and now this?

Even in her masterful anger as she approached the child, one thing passed over her mind with a seething grit and a clutched annoyance.

Humans were really complicated.

She'd passed the scurry of lights. Folded her arms as she looked down upon the roll of blue. Even though her instincts told her to run on home to the settlement, weary from the day's toil and work, she knew better than to leave a player in their anguish alone, especially out in the wilderness and in the vicinity of creatures.

Had she been less merciful, she might've kicked him to stand. Instead, the woman let out a frustrated sigh, and set a hand across the kid's head to ruffle his hair about as payback.

Chase didn't really expect to hear anything, nor did he expect to feel anything. Right now, the two of them were alone in the plains, with all the nearby monsters completely wiped out. And just when he expected it the least, he heard a sigh and felt a hand on his head. He looked up at her, with tears on his eyes and a confused expression. "H-Huh? You aren't angry..?", he asked her with a sniffle, looking like he was about to cry. For as stupid as this had been, she was the most trustworthy ally that he'd made in here.

Annoying her would be the same as annoying the best and most tolerant of his friends. He thought that she would be pissed, maybe never talk to him again with how this had never happened before, but... she instead was patting his head? "I-I thought I messed up... I'm sorry, I didn't want to, but I don't... get it...", he huffed in confusion again, wiping his eyes with balled up fists and turning his body to look at her in full, still balled up. "Why is she..?"

"No," NIGHT replied, even as the malice in her eyes said otherwise. The moment she'd notice his tears, she had to rescind the venom in her words and her language as much as possible. How'd he get so crybaby on her so fast, anyway? Even if she thought it better not to play into making pacemaker, there was some truth to the fact that she wouldn't have wanted pure silence had she been in his exact situation.

Not that she'd end up there in the first place, the player imagined.

"I don't... get it..."

"There's nothing to get." A dry comment, one that gave her pause as to his query, but not the patience enough to entertain it. "Look, just... don't pull something like that again on me, okay?" She could still recall the fresh sting of embarrassment just as she'd muttered her admissions, and only bared to entertain them for so much longer hence forward.

"C'mon, day's over. ...I've got some ice cream in the fridge back home if you want it."
