[PP|F5] <<Arabian Nights: First Night>> Off to the Fifth

Recommended Posts

<<Arabian Nights: First Night>>

Back to this floor, yet again. With his most recent trip back to here having been to take down Terra Firma, he had finally returned for something easier. Less bothersome and annoying, and more so interesting as one of the few quests with a storyline of sorts. It was a chain that went upwards, and seemed to be affected by every single choice you made. Whether you lied to the NPCs, if you tricked them or even decided to betray them- for once a quest that wasn't just mindless directions. Not that Chase minded of course, neither do I, but it was certainly a good change of pace.

Granted, the bluehead would still stay true to himself and follow down his linear 'good guy' path, as always. Donning his brown, vanity cloak, he was in the settlement and ready to enter the bar that he was meant to meet with the quest giver, Ali. He didn't read much into the quest granted its massive wall of words that bombarded him the moment he decided to try, so he thought it best to go in blind. And just before he was pushing the door open, he heard somebody else, a player, trudging through the sands floating about the settlement, looking over his shoulder to see @Koga"..?"

The last time Koga had been on the Fifth Floor, he'd trudged through the sand for days, all for some stupid merchant an extra skill. Admittedly, the skill was nice, but it had still been absolute hell. Not to mention the sandstorm. Koga had grown up around those kinds of things, and he hated them in game as much as he had in real life.

At least this time he wouldn't have to worry about anything like that. This time he was here for a questline. That's right, a questline. Koga could hardly believe it, he'd only come across one other questline before, and that was the Dragon Hunter quests, which he was still grinding through slowly.

But first he had to get to the tavern and actually get the first quest. As the man approached the tavern, its warm orange hearthfire glow seeping out the windows, he found himself waiting for another player to enter first. A blue-haired player, who must have heard his approach, had stopped and turned to look at him. Koga, bundled up in his thick coat with the hood pulled up over his head, and a scarf covering his mouth and nose could only lift an eyebrow at the man. "Go ahead," he said, gesturing for the other player to enter the tavern before him.

With that brief interaction and their eyes on the same place, Chase knew that the fellow swordsman wasn't here just for idle chitchat. He opened up his menu and slid a party invite to the only player nearby that he could find, sighing and entering the tavern as he waited for Koga to do the same. "I'll let you do the talking. Introduce yourself later.", he quietly blurted out once the two of them were inside, closing the door behind them and finding the NPC they were looking for drinking his sorrows away.

In an attire none less than anticipated, he sat by the counter with a bottle of wine almost emptied right next to him. A bit of a tonal shift there, given alcohol didn't exist for the players, but he was perfectly fine with it. Approaching him, the bluehead sat by him on a stool- although he did leave the one next to Ali empty so that the hooded man could take a seat and chitchat through it all. "What an absolute fool I was, putting my brother in danger like this... If only I were any stronger of a leader, this could have all been avoided!", he cried almost too theatrically before taking another swig of his drink. "... All up to the new guy then. All his."

Well, it took all of two seconds for Koga to somehow end in a party. How did this always happen to him? The man sighed internally, whilst accepting the party invitation and heading into the tavern. The sounds of merriment that had been muffled outside suddenly assaulted the man, accompanied by the smell of cheap and questionable food. The one thing that stood out among this crowd of rabblerousers was the lone sullen man at the bar, a near empty bottle of wine beside him. Koga could use a drink at this point. Too bad it wouldn't be real alcohol.

The two players approached the distraught man and 'listened' to his tale. Really, Koga was just trying to think of the nicest way to tell him to shut the hell up and give them the damn quest already. Finally after some whining about not being a strong leader, Koga finally snapped. "Look, just tell us where your brother is and we'll come bring him back, alright?" he said in a voice that was far calmer than he felt.

Ali turned to look at the side upon hearing a man's voice directed at him, with blurred vision by the looks of it. And then, he just nonchalantly turned back to his drink and took yet another swig, continuing to wail. "There's no way that you could get him back, he was captured by a group of bandits because I couldn't keep my mouth shut about the damn cave... I-It all began with a couple of words, I said-", he suddenly bit down on his tongue in his drunken stupor, glaring to the sides suspiciously before looking at the two travellers that had looks more blank than ever.

If this was supposed to be more immersive, all it managed was being more bothersome really. "Tell you what... Forget everything I said about the cave, but... Please, get him back. If you do, I'll reward you handsomely, please! You seem capable with a blade, aren't you?!", Ali continued, filled with desperation. Chase was most definitely letting Koga handle this one, he would have thrown hands by now out of how crept out he would feel.

God, Koga hated whiny, drunk old men. What Koga hated even more than whiny, drunk old men though was whiny, drunk old men who couldn't keep their goddamn mouth's shut. And the fact that Ali was doubting both Koga's and this other guys abilities only made it that much worse. A quick glance at either of them could tell anyone with half a brain cell that neither of them were some level one newbs in over their heads. But this guy...'oh noooo, this group of bandits will be too much for you!' It took all of Koga's willpower to not ram that bottle of wine somewhere that detailing in this post would likely result in me getting a ban.

Finally though, Ali was done.

"Yes! We are both capable swordsmen, now would you shut up and just let us go find your stupid brother! And yes we will forget about the fucking cave, Jesus Christ!"

Koga didn't wait for a response as he instantly got the notification that his quest journal had been updated. The man turned around and made a beeline for the exit, assuming ChaseR was following him. Once the pair were outside Koga turned to his new partner. "We're not forgetting about the cave."

Watching his temper go off, Chase began to think that if he had handled Ali, maybe the poor old man would have been better off. Then again, he'd be lying if he said he wouldn't have been miffed too. For crying out loud though, this short of a temper- damn. With the two walking out, Chase looked over his shoulder at Ali and simply dipped his head in apologetically. Upon exiting, he turned to the side to raise an eyebrow and fix his cloak around his back. "You think it's not just Ali running his mouth to lay out the quest's details for us?", he asked somewhat doubtfully, letting out a sigh and giving a shrug.

With that, he began to head right towards the exit of the settlement back into the harsh, familiar desert. It was really a bother, the constant sandstorms, the temperatures, everything. Thankfully, Survival eased the environment for him more than anything else did. "Let's go find his brother first, then we can talk about the details. I've heard this quest is special either way. Oh, name's Chase. You saw it already in the party menu though. Yours is Koga, and you use a..?", he trailed off, leaving an eyebrow cocked up curiously as he waited for an answer. Best way to kill off some time, for now. Just talking it out.

  • 2 weeks later...

"Even if it is just quest details," Koga replied to his companion, "he wouldn't have told us to forget about it. Whatever this whole cave thing is about, it's important." Just how it was important though, Koga had no idea yet. Something that Ali didn't want them to find perhaps? Most likely, but that still lead to quite a few other questions. Hopefully the pair would find out without dying for it.

The pair soon left the settlement, and the lingering heat of the day rose into the night air, mingling with the sand spitting at them through the air. Koga opened up his inventory and a katana appeared in Koga's outstretched hand. A black scabbard with a navy blue sageo wrapped around it, matched by the same navy blue ito wrapping the black rayskin of the handle. "Katana," the black-clad man answered. "How about yourself?" he asked as he fastened the weapon to his hip.

Another katana user, huh? It felt like every other person that Chase saw appeared to be either a katana user, another two-handed straight sword user, or held some form of spear. The only exceptions to that rule so far were Alkor and Zandra, of which one he knew he could trust. The other... no, not so much. "If it's money you want, unless it has millions of col, you're better off getting it by looting mobs.", the bluehead grunted and lowered his head to look to his waist's left side, stretching the cloak hiding it to reveal a stone, broken sword whose blade was barely even there.

It wasn't sharp, and it was more so like a statue's if anything, just hanging by his hip. "I use two handed straight swords. Never thought to or found the need for anything else.", he nodded to his own words and continued to walk off towards the bandit camp that was slowly edging closer and closer, squinting his eyes and gesturing for Koga to slow down. "... I see some patrolling.". And it was true, a few were wandering about in groups, looking around as cautiously as ever.

Why did it always have to be about money? "It's not about the money," Koga said, a slightly offended tone in his voice. "It's about answers. I just want to know what he's hiding, that's all." No amount of money in the world could buy Koga the thing he wanted most. That was gone forever.

The sky-haired man shifted his cloak to reveal a sword unlike anything Koga had ever seen before. Well, never on the field at least. "Well, can't say I expected that..." It had to be effective though, right? I mean this guy was clearly leagues ahead of Koga, and he hadn't gotten there by carrying around a glorified, shitty rock. Koga would find out soon enough.

ChaseR drew Koga's attention to the small group of men wander through the sands, the glow of a fire behind them emanating from a cave. "That must be it," Koga said, his voice lowered. "I don't think we'll be able to take them down quietly though...you ready?"

Once Koga had Chase's affirmative, the man drew his blade and quickly dashed in, his blade already glowing crimson. Before the group of men could react, Koga slashed the first across the chest, knocking him backwards. The weapon in Koga's hand suddenly became black, almost invisible against the night sky. The swordsman span twice, and suddenly the other three men were on the ground around him. Chase's turn.

The comment must have been about his sword, which was understandable. It was hard to estimate just how powerful it was by looking at it- it was just a rock after all, given shape. Nothing engraved on it, just vaguely resembling a sword. With Koga jumping in though, now was a time for it to shine. Chase followed right up from behind, slashing at all of the thieves. One he hit right on the head with the sword's rounded edge, the other in the sides, the last one he jabbed with its tip and then.

Then it appeared why he still used this blade. White wisps of light began to appear all around, starting to reform a blade- but Koga couldn't see that quite much before the light got blinding. While he was unable to see, a familiar blip was heard and by the time the flash was over, Chase had sheathed his sword again and there was no bandit to be found. "Good thing you decided not to do it stealthily. This sword is uh... Makes things hard. Anyways, let's find the guy."

It would appear however, as if Chase was the one that wasn’t able to see during his attack. Whatever it be, shifting sands, a sudden sandstorm that blew Koga out of the way or something else, his companion was no longer there. The bluehead looked over his shoulder almost in disbelief, looking around and shouting with not so much worry as suspicion in his voice. “Koga? Are you there?”, he tried to call out for the adventurer travelling alongside him so far, but nothing. It would appear as if wherever he went, he had disappeared for the time being.

And so, that left only the blue tank to go ahead and find Cassin in order to bring him back to Ali. Needless to say, he walked further into the outpost that the bandits had happened to be patrolling, remaining mostly quiet while he trudged through it to not stir up any trouble and get looks on him. That, he managed to do successfully, despite the godsend that was his previous attack on one of the poor guards.

Only a few steps into the camp before he could see the person they had been sent to look for, Cassin, tied up with his hands behind his back and his head to the ground. He quietly made his way over and shook him to wake him up, succeeding and offering him a smile before he untied his wrists and helped him get up. “I’m here to get you back to Ali. He’s waiting for you at the settlement.”, he informed the kidnapped brother, signalling him to get going. “S-So you were sent to rescue me, I knew that my brother would never give up on me…”

That he definitely hadn’t done. “He kept crying and drinking for you instead of doing anything though… Just asked me and… Just me, to take care of the bandits and escort you all the way back to town. So let’s just go and we can talk over this there, alright?”, Chase asked Cassin while the duo had begun to sprint all the way to the settlement, ready to exit the outpost as Chase switched out his gear before he noticed something- or rather someone, blocking their path up ahead.

Two of the bandits, possibly the only two left behind after the duo had taken care of the patrolling squad, seemed to have picked up on Chase’s plan to help Cassin escape and go back to Ali. They weren’t just going to let this happen though, of course they wouldn’t. Instead, they seemed to instantly draw their blades out and run right at the bluehead. He gave Cassin a quick glance and not, before taking off to start battling with the duo.

Battling was a graceful way of saying completely destroying them though- they both got taken down with a hit before they even had any time to react, leaving none in their path but the harsh desert. Cassin was fully free to return home as he pleased, be with his brother and take care of anything he wanted to care-free as always. Well… Hopefully not carefree enough to get caught again or to let his sibling run his mouth about the cave filled with treasures that Koga was oh-so-curious about.

At the sight of both bandits being taken down, the hostage smiled and just ran up to Chase in order to continue being on their way. If anything, he seemed to have never seen expertise like this before, getting excited and even starting to praise the tank. “That was amazing, how gifted are you with the blade? It’s no wonder you could rescue me and Ali chose you of all people, you are incredible!”, his flattery kept coming and coming, never seeming to stop.

While the blueberry never judged characters like this, boy were Ali and Cassin really one dimensional. He didn’t say much to him, instead accepting the comments with an awkward grin, but he sure ran his mouth in the back of his mind. “It’s not me being gifted with a blade, it’s me being a player that’s incredibly overleveled for what the quest originally intended… Right? Because there’s no way that they can do half as much as we can but they can’t break free, we both die if our HP drops to zero after all…”

The walk through the desert continued like this for a fair while more. Although it was tedious, tiring and boring as all hell, given that it was still Chase’s favorite fifth floor, it eventually came to a halt when they reached the settlement, which meant that he could get kindly discharged from this quest, receive his SP, kick the desert a few times out of spite and then never have to do anything with it ever again- a compromise he could definitely come to terms with, seeing all the hard work he had put in through quests for this floor.

Upon entering the settlement, Cassin seemed shook and looked around as if he was hallucinating. That all fell apart though when he pointed at the tavern that the bluehead had met Ali in, where the younger brother quickly began to run on over. The two entered, and Ali instantly turned to the door with a big, stupid smile on his face in his drunken stuppor.

“Brother!”, Ali shouted almost straight away and ran towards Cassin, gripping him in a tight hug. “I can’t believe you’re still alive- brother, I’m so sorry!”, he continued to wail, potentially too loud for the other patrons to ignore. Not that Chase had any say in the matter, but he just looked at the two with a small smile and a lot of regrets for letting them reunite in a tavern of all places… Had he known they’d be this loud, he would have just asked Ali to wait in his home..

“I’m sorry for getting caught, brother… I should have been more careful. I’ll never make such mistakes again, I promise.”, Cassin tried to reassure Ali, while Chase continued to watch, tapping his foot on the ground. That wasn’t to say a heartwarming feeling wasn’t just washing all over him though. If anything, he was very happy that they had finally managed to reunite, and watching this made him feel like he just contributed to the game’s world much more than he had in a lot of other quests.

As soon as they seemed to be done greeting one another all happily, Ali let go of Cassin and turned to look over at Chase with the same smile, if not an even wider one. “Thank you so much, thank you! Please, take this- I will never be able to forget you or what you did for me. This is a small token of my gratitude.”, Ali uttered and shoved a bag filled with Col over to blue’s hand, surprising him as he opened it slightly to see the contents pop up in a small inspection window before tying it and shoving it in a pocket for now.

“Thank you again, adventurer.”, he said after a few more compliments that flew by Chase’s ears, getting a nod in return. The boy then proceeded to watch the duo slowly make their way out of the tavern after they waved him goodbye a few more times and with that, the quest window popped up before him to reveal all of the rewards. Some good SP and a fair amount of Col given all the previous quest’s rewards that they had run so far. That was definitely a pleasant surprise, if anything.

Now this just left two questions. Granted that they could see all of the Col, that meant Ali was probably not lying when it came to the cave filled with treasures that Cassin had gotten kidnapped over. That was something that led to the second question- where the hell was Koga? He knew that they were together up to the clearing of the bandits, but… Not only would he appreciate this, seeing as he just seeked the wealth that came from the cave, he was… Genuinely nowhere to be seen.

Maybe the shifting sands hid some quicksand pit, or a sandstorm really did whip up behind him and help him get lost. Then again, maybe he had ill intent in the first place- given he wanted to take care of Ali almost as soon as he started to run his mouth. And by that, he obviously meant it in a nasty and probably lethal way.

Now though, came Chase’s favorite time. Regardless of where Koga had gotten lost or what had become of the cave, the boy didn’t mind any. What he did mind was the desert- and that’s why he began to kindly piss off, heading toward the teleporter. In an act of complete disgust, he sneered at the sands all around the ground and took a shoe off, emptying it of all the sand before putting it right back on, huffing and getting on the teleporter, where the filthy, crunchy mess wouldn’t go.

“Off you go, stupid desert.”, he chuckled and closed his eyes, only to utter the name of the twenty first’s settlement and be gone in full. With that, he was back in the humid cave he preferred tons to the annoying and bothersome desert, throwing both hands behind his head and beginning to head right towards the estate that he had in the crystal cave, whistling lowly to himself. It felt so satisfying to just be finished with the stupid desert. At long last, dismissed.
