[PP-22] Clues to Corventhol [Intermediate Dungeon]

"They've still mobs, albeit ones with unusual properties.  The fundamental rules haven't changed."  He shrugged, wondering if he was speculating too much on what the Spire's agents were and weren't capable of doing.  Both of them had better hope he was right enough to keep those in the encampment outside out of this place, or they could have much larger problems at any time.  Teleportation crystals could also be a bit hinky inside dungeons, and weren't necessarily a sure means of escape.

Another slice of pink fractal meat was severed while he internally debated their options.  This thing was close to its limit, meaning that the boss would soon follow.  Given the state of its minions, it was probably going to be utterly disgusting.

"Let me know if you'll need a minute once we drop this thing.  These bosses can hit with the power of a freight train.  I'm assuming that you'll want to hit it from stealth.  We might as well both do the same."

Her brief glimmer of hope for the ruining of their target was greeted with a rush of swapped steel and a battering blow of a more familiar blade upon rancid meat. Instead of a divide expected of usual greatsword arts, her executioner was more bent of pelting the orb's fleshy insides and squishing them back into the crevices of the tunnel ceiling, flat edge slamming out what health it had left to leave its near-empty gauge. A sigh from the player, who'd finally started to crack open her vision once more once their glob's awful splatter had finally registered in her ears, eyes trying to adjust to the dark once more.

"I'm good."

The last hit was all she'd needed. A sigh left her form NIGHT shook off her nerves. She gingerly peered back towards the tunnel behind her, hoping no traces of the horrors were left in their wake. Even at the slightest hint of pink, her gaze would immediately fall back upon the forefront darkness of their make-shift cavern. "Lead the way."

Lead he did, sword at the ready and expecting more of the same.  The tunnel led into a larger chamber, roughly sixty feet to a side, all of it marked by the same ornamented strange stone blocks as they'd seen throughout the rather truncated dungeon.  The floor and ceiling stepped down and upward, giving the entire space a very Aztec-meets-Minecraft sort of atmosphere.  The symbols on each of the blocks glow with dark, crimson light that seems to flicker in a way that both players soon realize is matching the pulse of a heartbeat.  At the apex of the ceiling they found a cluster of blood-red crystals identical to those found in the caverns where Skalaugh and his lackeys were fought.  Directly below, at the bottom of the stepped pit, was a writing mass of flesh and tentacles that had very clearly been feeding on them.  The damned things were festering in the bright pink flesh, like ulcers, and surrounded in oozing yellow puss and angry blackish veins spreading from each point of infection.

"Sooo... you may want to close your eyes again."  

His warning given, Freyd rushed ahead.  There was only one way out of here, and it required this thing to get ginsu'd.

The warning... came in too late. But NIGHT was still ready to keep her eyes shut for the sake of never-having-to-see-that-again. Just as Freyd dove in to strike, so too did her footwork match behind his, training her ear to the closeness of her target. She swore she could've picked up the whips and lashings of the nightmare's appendages through air, and she didn't want to think twice about the liquid beneath her soles.

When her companion halted, so did she, Cardinal having stolen her presence the moment she'd entered the room. One vertical cut downwards, a plain and simple attack, before the woman shied her vision away from the centerpiece, tracking the blocks upon the floor for any signs of a safe space from their enemy. The player edged herself backwards, careful not to trip upon any veins nor ridged groundwork. At the very least, she noted down the latter -- how she'd managed to clear the obstacles without spotting them in the first still felt like luck's movements seeping into play.

Ugh.  This thing really was gross, but he didn't think it was a good idea for both of them to try fighting blind.  He was already having to keep his distance from NIGHT on the off chance her aim strayed and clipped him by mistake. The woman was good, among the best he'd ever seen in the game, but Cardinal was a fickle sort.  Freyd remained convinced that the machine-mind still had it out for him, but it would never be something he could prove.  Incidents would simply be explicable as natural errors resulting in ill fortune from a random number generator.  Meanwhile, he'd end up with a sword in his back and some poor sod would probably get an orange strike for it.  Like ChaseR.  Damn.  That thought put things into different potential perspective, but this wasn't the time.

Working his way around to the left, he could press his attack, reach NIGHT if she needed assistance, and also stay far enough away to avoid the potential for accident.  Not ideal, but practical and functional, and that was often enough.

So it was psychological warfare, then. She noticed it in the way that none of the flailing from any of their opponents had managed to reach out and strike them, either on purpose or on accident. Had NIGHT been paying more attention to the field, perhaps she would've given them more credit for trying -- but then she'd end up with the foul taste of bile in her mouth. Add further to the horror show on display from Aincrad.

Still, combat without vision was something she was beginning to become adapted to. Perhaps Freyd had the right of mind in calling on their expedition, despite the nightmares it would inevitably impart in her slumber. No telling how Shadow might be manipulating its environment in time, and she wasn't pressed on picking up another mod when her loadout was practically full.

Another strike, another squelch; her blade tore diagonally this time, several parts of their dummy splattering across the floor, and NIGHT glanced if only to ensure she wasn't going to step on any of the dissipating parts.

A raft of tendrils launched themselves towards him, each covered in yellowed eyes and black ulcers.  They watched him as they passed.  Creepy.  NIGHT seemed to be catching a second wind, or else perhaps just acclimatizing.  She was likely bound for the raid herself and seeking to make as many preparations as he was.  As distant as they seemed from each other, this was a point of common ground.

"How will you fight whatever waits for us beyond the labyrinth, if you won't fight this thing with open eyes?"  It wasn't deliberately a jibe, though he had to admit that she seemed to respond better to such an approach.  His tone remained neutral as he spoke the words, presenting them as facts to be confronted, rather than provocation.  Freyd severed the encroaching, flailing flesh, letting it shower as fractured shards cast to an absent wind all around him.  

"You are stronger than this, NIGHT."

Well, she seemed to be doing quite well for herself now, wasn't she?

"You are stronger than this, NIGHT."

She knew she was. She wasn't sure where the pep talk was coming from, however.

Another dash into the darkness, another clash of steel against sinew, tearing away at viscous, slimy pink. Above her, a stray tendril was on its way for one singular retaliation. She could pick up its movements. The creature wasn't subtle about it.

Had Cardinal allowed her to shift her blade off its form instantly, perhaps NIGHT would've willed her sword to lop off the appendage and save herself the effort of dodging out the way of its attack. Instead, she'd chosen a withdrawal, the kilter a successful evasion but causing the woman to stumble backwards.

Her stray hand hit the floor in a balancing act. A leap backwards, then -- instead of blocking her sights with her palm from then on, it was with the back of her hand, the woman still keeping her sights closed off throughout it all.

A barely perceptible grimace was his only reaction.  

No verbal response.  NIGHT replied by not replying.  Freyd was not surprised.  Severing another thick, rubbery tentacle cleared an open path to its heart.  It had lost too many limbs to block his advance.  Darting directly across the surface of its boated body mass, dodging individual maws and eyes, his blade carved a deep cut behind him.  Like a plow's furrow tilling the soil, he split the creature's exposed 'face' in half causing it to burst explosively and shower shards of itself and its embedded crystals throughout the chamber.  They ricocheted like shrapnel against the strange stone blocks, which slowly dimmed and lost their ambient flare.  The room slowly fell into total darkness.

"Hrm.  Well, you can open your eyes now.  I think we're done, and you'll see about as much as you'd hoped."

Watching NIGHT in the dark, he wondered what was truly going on inside.
