[PP-F21] Assassination of the King <<Betrayal of the King>>

Recommended Posts

"Indeed." Itzal answered. "What would make things interesting were some actually unique abilities. Attacking multiple times, casting illusions, phasing through mitigation, or applying a unique debuff effect. Or an even more dangerous ability where it takes any debuff applied by players, and applying it to the players instead. Or even better, give it the ability to prevent players from escaping combat by any means other than the vanish mod or a teleport crystal." Itzal could have gone on with the possibilities forever since this thing had no real backstory. There wasn't any limit to what he could or couldn't give it as an ability, or stat, and so forth. This thing, as Chase had so elegantly put it: was boring. It wasn't even worth killing for all the skill points. Even the equipment dropped wasn't worth it unless you got the rare drop, which was pretty special... That being said, it may be a better idea for Chase to be the party leader in this case, given that he seems the more lucky of the two. Case and point: Chase's third holy strike in a row. Itzal couldn't help but chuckle. "Your luck is leagues better than my own, heh heh." Rushing up to strike the boss, he could see his paralysis and bleed trying to take effect but failing. "For example: Only actually applying the DoT effects of my sword against a boss immune to everything."

It was only moments ago that Itzal was completely worried about the boss. But now, he'd relaxed enough to the point where casual chitchat was nothing beyond the ordinary while the two fought the forgotten king, a simple monster with a boringly simple kit. The same luck that Chase had, was the sort of luck the king needed to make him pull through this.

Chase DBP Default.png"Don't wanna ruin your train of thought but that sounds dangerous and our life is on the line.", Chase tried to get him back on the task, while his sword lit up again. Holy shit, what form of karmic retribution was this? He was getting to beat the boss to a pulp, all the strong hits coming out one after the other. Way to talk about luck, right? And as the king's health dropped and dropped, a swing of his arm was all it took for Chase to be thrown to the side and skid along the ground, groaning and letting out a low growl until eventually, he hit a rock and stopped. He just stayed there, limp, while the monster's gaze turned to Itzal and almost pinned itself on him. "... P-Paralyze..."

"Not when you take our safety measures into account." Itzal answered Chase. "For example: I assume you have at least one teleport crystal on your person yes?" Then his sword ignited into bright lights for the fourth time in a row. This time Itzal just stopped moving entirely. "...Then again those might not be necessary." He watched as Chase struck the boss and dealt yet another incredible blow... Before the boss itself landed a hit. From what Itzal could tell, the boss decided to stop chasing the players around, and instead hit them when it knew they'd be there: while it was being hit. Itzal watched as Chase crashed into the wall and fell to the ground. The paralyze icon by his health bar. "Well that's cheap. We can't apply anything but he can paralyze us." Sighing, he muttered under his breath: "I f***ing hate paralysis." And with that rushed at the boss to land a blow. The problem with advanced dungeons was that you couldn't escape with a teleport crystal. But in every other scenario, players could use it to stay safe. If the boss was landing far too many blows and knocking their health down too quickly, the wounded player could switch with the other, and then attempt to escape combat. Regenerate their health. Then jump back in and switch with the other player to give them a chance to recover. Rinse and repeat. If for some reason it was proving too much, they simply teleported out. He didn't manage to land a hit but honestly that wasn't his goal at this point. While the boss had it's hate on Chase, he was going to do everything he could to keep the boss from landing a hit on Chase. When paralyzed one's evasion was neutralized, so he was especially vulnerable. Itzal didn't think a second hit would actually do much, given that his evasion would make things run smoothly again once they kicked in.

Chase DBP Glare 1.pngAnd with Chase down at the ground, things began to move much slower. Or it felt that way at least. His adrenaline rush was starting to wear off, and just when the fight was hard he was on time out due to this stupid paralysis debuff. What a way to go. He couldn't tell what was happening quite clearly, but he could hear Itzal's nagging loud and clear. If anything, he seconded it too. He didn't have a clear visual on the fight however, having been thrown way too far to the side. The boss that Itzal was fending off didn't stay put for much longer, managing to land a hit and paralyze his partner as well, sending him skidding back a bit just as the blueberry's paralysis wore off. "Are, you okay?", he asked and pushed himself up off the ground, glaring at the monster as he gripped his sword tightly again.

Itzal spent as much time as he could parrying, deflecting, and dodging blows. To his great shock the boss had shifted it's attention away from Chase, and towards Itzal. And now that it finally got it's first ever blow against them, it was fighting with boosted morale. Itzal parried and dodged, but it was becoming increasingly difficult as the brute started going into a berserking rage. It reached the point where the boss would make two swings where Itzal could only make one. And of course, inevitably, Itzal was struck against the boss and sent flying, hitting the cliffside as Chase had and landing paralyzed. As he landed paralyzed, he could feel the clips of his hood tightening. The armor was designed so that paralysis, which in terms of fluff more often had electrical static covering the victim, would tighten and lock down his hood so that people couldn't just walk up and pull it down. That being said... It didn't make him any happier. "Other than being robbed of movement I'm fine. I don't care about the damage, it's not a concern to me."

It seemed as though Itzal was somewhat more used to being paralyzed then. Chase quickly made his way back to the boss, deflecting hit after hit from the boss before managing to get a hit on it- and surprisingly enough, it wasn't another holy proc. That was a pleasant, if anything change. That meant his luck could only go so far and screw him over only that many times, heh. Right?

Chase DBP Glare Nervous.pngAs soon as his attack had connected, the monster grabbed Chase and threw him into the air before slamming him back down onto the ground, causing him to cough out and groan, stretching his head left and right before losing control and going limp again. "A-A fucking second time...", he grunted. The king really was starting to get more confident and reckless with attacks, not minding delivering more blows even at the cost of his health. They weren't in any danger just yet, none whatsoever, but it was going to get problematic soon enough if the same luck Chase had with holy procs, the king was having with his hits landing one after the other.

Finally feeling his body again he didn't hesitate in rolling to his feet and grabbing his weapon. He immediately ran over to help Chase, who got struck by the boss yet again, who was still in a berserking rage. "You've got to be sh***ing me." He watched as Chase crashed into the cliffside, Itzal heard him. While he didn't say anything, he did think to himself: "More like three times. You, then me, then you again. I sure hope he's not returning the favor with four crits." With that on his mind, Itzal dashed to the boss with full speed. He was in no way planning to let this boss gain an advantage when it was so stupidly designed. With no accuracy bonuses it was relying on luck alone for a hit. And their health was high enough that it's rare hits barely dented their overall health. Not to mention that his health was already nearing full once again. However Itzal couldn't get a hit on the boss. The brute was moving too quickly due to his berserk rage. At this point Itzal's primary goal was to be as evasive as he could, parry every blow, to avoid getting another critical hit. If he could do that, then maybe it would be enough to throw the boss off, and bring this all to a normal crawl again.

Chase DBP Default.pngJust as the boss had gained all this tremendous confidence and begun to swing wildly at the party, it had lost it when its attack missed Itzal completely. Even more so when it saw Chase getting back off the ground, dusting himself while a red aura enveloped him. And like so, his health was almost back to full, completely healing whatever the previous blow managed to do to him and a little bit more than that. "If this whole paralysis shtick keeps up I'm going to get very annoyed.", he nagged the same way that Itzal was internally, cracking his fingers- or at least trying to, there weren't any bones in Aincrad- and starting to approach the behemoth of a monster once more to carve another attack right onto him.

His plan seemed to be working, at least for the time being. The boss continued on it's berserk rage for a bit, but it's growing frustration was starting to affect where it's swings landed. Watching his enemy carefully he waited for just the right moment before rolling to the side just before the boss made an enormous swing at him. The blade got stuck in the ground, completely throwing the boss off it's rhythm. It expected the blade to come right out, therefore it tried swinging again but was held back by the stuck blade. It tried again and lost focus on Itzal for a moment as it heaved at it's weapon. While it was trapped doing so, Itzal ran up the boss's back and thrust his black sword into the back of it's neck, pulled it out, and jumped off of it's head like a ramp and rolled across the ground coming to a slide. "Don't bother drawing it's hate. Just keep attacking it. It's down to nine hundred or so health and we're healing quickly. It's damage isn't a concern so long as it's luck is over. Otherwise... It wouldn't matter anyway."

Chase didn't really have to do much to give an answer. A nod, and it sufficed pretty much just fine. Back to beating the hell out of the time king, and just as Itzal managed to dig his sword deep into the ruler's neck, the bluehead's hit went and thrust right into his stomach, managing to get out a gash large enough to deal considerable damage. His numbers were pretty much the same every time, but with the unsteady decrease of the health bar, he was sure there was some difference varying with the effort of his attacks.

Chase DBP Silent Awkward.png"It's not like I have to try to gain its hate.", he told Itzal and laughed awkwardly as the two distanced themselves, watching the boss try to stick an attack right at him but miss. He wasn't letting the fiend's vile claws or whatever reach him and put him down as if hit by a tranquilizer again. "There really isn't a more annoying way to stop you from doing your stuff than to stun or freeze you in place in this place."

"It's annoying on screen and infuriating in person." Itzal said in simple response. He couldn't help but think back to all of the player killers he'd ambushed. Using paralysis and stun attacks to immobilize them, forcing them to watch helplessly as their comrades were ruthlessly hacked, pierced, pinned down and beaten to a bloody pulp by yours truly. He felt a little bad, but it didn't last long. Given that they were murderers and half of them enjoyed the profession of theirs. As for his additional hate factor... "Fighting Spirit or Taunt?" He asked simply as he went in for another strike. The boss didn't have much time to react at this point. It wasn't defending itself, but it was so disorientated with the players running and jumping around him that it couldn't aim properly anymore. Itzal slashed his blade across the back of it's legs, and by the time the boss swung at him he wasn't there anymore. At this point it was just a matter of keeping him disorientated while they whittled him down.

Chase DBP Default.pngThe confusion from the boss continued, with the attacks never letting up and cutting it no slack. Slice after slice, Chase lunged back at it and cut at its arm, landing a few more strikes before he kicked off of it and landed back near Itzal once more, giving him the go for another barrage. "Fighting Spirit. Taunt is a waste of an enhancement.", he briefly answered and shared his thoughts for both options, watching his ally run past him and zip right towards the boss that once more, had failed to retaliate in time. In time, accurately enough to even land the attack had Chase stayed there... it was a good outcome all in all. His energy was rapidly dropping, but his opponent's health would zero out first. Even if he kept missing, the little energy he'd lose would allow him to make up for it sooner or later. And this long drawn battle would soon enough, come to an end.

"Agreed." He said very simply before taking his turn to charge forward. "Maybe if it had a side effect like doubling thorns damage should you be hit though." He dodged a blow that the boss tried to land (poorly), and jumped over it as it bent over for it's attack, slashing his blade across it's back before running in a circle again. "Wouldn't be a half bad enhancement either. For tanks going for all mitigation, hate gaining and thorns damage build. But adding hate that really isn't needed is just wasted slots." Of course Itzal was more partial to an evasion build himself. Even Evasion tanks were superior to mitigation ones in Itzal's mind. You just had to make sure they kept the hate up, kept their evasion at maximum, had as high a health you could have, and have healers at the ready. The boss wouldn't hit often, but when they did you'd be able to take it... Most of the time. Unless of course someone used both light and heavy armor, one with mitigation one with evasion. Then have a shield with thorns on it.

Chase really wasn't the sort of person to turn to when it came to game balancing, let alone anything to do with numbers itself- his worst subject back in school was Algebra, not out of boredom but more so lack of talent. But that was besides the point. What Itzal was talking about, just sounded like situational stuff and partially, even nonsense. He didn't know much about calculating the damage dealt and couldn't even read it quite too well to be able to tell the differences such a minor change would make.

Chase DBP Silent Unsure.png"Tanks usually get too much unnecessary hate, but I don't think there's even many mobs with thorns-", he tried to provide his own explanation but his sword interrupted him, allowing his attack to deal double the damage if not more, due to the holy effect activating once more. With a slash at the king, his health was quite literally in the reds and almost completely wiped out. "Seems like he's almost down for the count."

"Sounds like you heard me backwards. I was suggesting an enhancement that primarily doubles any thorn damage you deal to enemies who hit you." Itzal explained. Unlike Chase, Itzal was good with calculations, and was in fact studying to become a game developer. At some point near the beginning of his time in Sword Art Online, Itzal actually kept a journal where he wrote ideas for video games for when he finally escaped. It hadn't been touched in forever of course since he'd been focusing on the lives of others this whole time. Upon seeing his sword flash with light again, Itzal slowed down to let Chase take the action first. He watched it's health go down. "At this point two of my attacks or one of yours will finish him off." He stated. He'd charge forward on the off chance Chase missed his attack. Always take precautions he thought. Itzal rushed forward and thrust his sword into the chest of the boss where it's heart would be, and twisted his blade to make as big a wound as possible. Normally this would be where it bled, but obviously this king had the power to defy any form of logic, so it had no blood to speak of. Itzal leaped away, signalling for Chase to target the... Target, on it's chest.

Chase DBP Silent Smile.pngThe target was right there, and a very clean one at that. With a bit of preparing, Chase took a deep breath and started to run right towards it, charging for what would be the last time. The king attempted to swat him out of the air, but in true, dramatic story fashion, the boy's attack landed first. And by the time that it fully dug into the wound, the boss had shattered into tiny crystals, fleeting towards the ceiling of the cave. The fight was longer and more strenuous than what he remembered it being the last time he took it on with Freyd and Jomei, but it was finally over and the two could call it a day. Itzal had gotten his fair share of SP, and so had Chase, taking into account his earlier rounding up of the slimes back at home in his farm. "Ah, sorry. Eh, I dunno. At least we took care of this guy.", he gave a small nod towards the hooded swordsman and sheathed his blade, stretching his arms and groaning. "That was tiring, mmgh."

Itzal watched as the col was sent into their inventories, and the skill points added to their levels. Itzal received quite a lot from his given it was his first time completing this quest, and he'd trained earlier today which increased his experience rewards greatly. As Itzal sheathed his blade he said: "Agreed. I'm never touching this quest again. It isn't worth-" He fell silent as he noticed that neither one of them received anything. No menu popped up on Chase's side stating any items. Itzal was silent for a moment. "...Are you serious? They build a boss that's supposed to be difficult and doesn't drop anything?" What was even more infuriating was only if you were stupidly lucky could you get any decent gear from the boss. The rewards just seemed to suck save for the skill point reward. Sighing he signaled for Aldion to return to him. "Well, I came here for the skill points anyways. And I wouldn't have gotten anything anyways since you added me to the party, and not the other way around."

Chase simply raised his shoulders and began to laugh awkwardly as Itzal was hit with the realization they wouldn't get anything in return. Not to say that the bluehead was any happier for it, but he didn't feel surprised any. With all his luck spent on the holy proccing turn after turn and attack after attack, no wonder he didn't even get one of the crappier drops the King was meant to drop. The other one was very rare, he wasn't even sure what players had gotten it and if they were even active to this very point- were there even any? "N-No, I'm fully decked out. I'd give it to you and ask you to just be there if I needed you in the future, probably. But the item's rare anyways so... it's alright. I'd already done the quest but this was a good test dummy to beat up and check out my performance in a longer battle. Get a feel for attacking the same target. I've a feeling it'll come in handy for the floor boss raid.", he managed to hold up a conversation properly for once, chuckling and scratching the back of his head. "It should be a whole level or so. It's a LOT of skill points."

Nodding with a hidden smile at Chase's reply, he said "I'm glad to hear that. There used to be a guild that hoarded every item that had any sort of unique enhancement, and almost always landed the last hit. It's good to see unselfish players joining the frontline ranks. Refreshingly so actually. As for need, I'm always there for others. I may be busy chasing down as many pkers as I can, but if you can find a way to reach me, I'll be there." Of course, Itzal couldn't let him send messages. You needed a username to do that, and it was an incredibly guarded secret of Itzal's. When Chase mentioned the boss raid, Itzal nodded. "Yes, I saw you at the meeting. Just be careful, and remember to bring every precaution. From what they said, it's going to be a very, very dangerous raid. The most dangerous yet." Oh how far Itzal could have been from the truth. With that he began to walk away into the shadows, silently switching to his hide skill. "Until next time Chase." As he made his way into the darkness he couldn't help but smile. It had been too long since he fought side-by-side someone outside of the front lines like that. Maybe he should take breaks from his daily hunting more often.

Chase DBP Default.pngAnd with Itzal's departure, Chase stood there quietly. For the meeting, he must have confused him with someone else- he was still pretty much getting started by the time the meeting was going on. As for the 'hunting down PKers' comment, it had him somewhat tense, thinking back to the PKer he cared about the most- Mari. "Y-Yeah, 'till next time.", the youngster gave a nod and waved him farewell, turning around and looking at the battlefield silently. "... She's been safe all this time. She'll keep being safe then. And I'll be there for her too so nothing happens to her, even if it means I have to stop Are from doing anything.". Better not think about the bad side of everything. So he shook his head, tried to clear his mind and began to go on his merry way, picking Blizz back up on his shoulder now that they'd cleared the boss monster. "Let's get you home little guy."
