Quest Details-

Spoiler

Quest Rewards:

  • 500 Experience Points
  • 500 col

Requirements:

  • Talk with Issela in Flora.
  • Roleplay travelling to the fort and getting captured by the pitfall trap along the way. (3+ posts)
  • Work your way through the fort, defeating six regular bandits and then the leader. (Enemies can be fought one at a time or in parties, not exceeding four mobs at a time. Rests may be taken between fights to replenish HP and EN. This works for Kagamine as well, who possesses standard T2 out-of-combat healing.)
  • Return the teenager to his mother in Flora.

Astreya gave a long, low inhale before a big happy grin split her face.  She always enjoyed the third floor, with all of its greenery and things going on.  It was just pretty to look at, no matter which way she looked at it, and so she couldn't help but to come back here time and time again.  Of course today, she had decided to take a little detour off the beaten path a bit and head toward Flora.  Since she'd started to get her rear in gear again, she had been seeking out several quests that she'd missed the first time while she was just sort of wandering around.

She was serious now, and she had to find out the best way to get her strength back up to the highest levels.  "Okay so I'm looking for... some lady that needs help," she spoke aloud, having gathered a bunch of information from some other players on what she was looking for here.

As she maneuvered forward, she became aware of a woman standing near the center of town, looking this way and that.  When she saw a player character, she tried to wave them down, but it didn't seem like a lot of them were paying her much attention.  Despite the fact that the dark-haired woman knew that this woman was an NPC, on a scripted path, she still felt bad for them.  They were still trapped in the game like the rest of them, even if they didn't realize it.

"Hey!" Astreya called as she came closer to the woman.  "You need help with something?"

"Yes!  Yes I do!" the woman responded, clearly upset about something.  Astreya figured it would come out sooner or later with the quest, and so the woman just nodded in response, waiting for her to continue.  "I...I'm sorry, I'm not usually so worked up about things, but my son..."

Astreya frowned.  While she didn't have a kid, obviously, she was still the daughter of someone else, so having to think of her own parents being this upset over something happening pulled at her heart strings a little. "Hey, it's cool!  Just take your time.  I'm sure I can help out somehow."

The woman took a breath, trying to steady herself for a moment, before she brought her gaze back to Astreya.  "Some bandits nearby took my son hostage.  They're demanding a ransom and I don't have the money to pay for it.  So I've been looking to see if someone could help me."

Astreya nodded, setting a hand on the blade across her shoulders.  "I can definitely help you!  Did they, like, tell you where to take the ransom, or whatever?" she asked.  She figured if they had a meetup point, that Astreya could just go there, bust some heads and call it a day.

"I...I do.  Here," she spoke, handing Astreya a letter.  "If you could rescue Kagamine, I'd be so thankful!"

The dark-haired girl nodded, giving the woman a thumbs-up.  "For sure!  I'll go kick some bandit butt and be back in a bit!" she called, beginning to follow the path out toward her new destination.

As she made her way out of town, the girl gave a small breath as she looked back down at the directions given.  So it seemed that there was going to be a bunch of directions for her to follow to get to where the bandits had taken the kid.  She frowned as she moved, the young woman letting her usual cheerful outer shell drop once it was just her by herself again.  Even around the NPCs she kept the front up, but when it was just her... she couldn't help but to find herself more than a little perturbed by the situation.

She knew that Kagamine wasn't able to actually feel pain, or fear, or whatever.  It was a game, it was all simulated, but that didn't mean these NPCs didn't react like a person should, and that crossed that uncanny valley enough for Astreya to feel odd about leaving any of them to their fate.  The experience and the col and all of that from what she had gotten was initially the main reason but the more of these she saw, the less certain she became of herself on it.

Of course, she didn't have long to dwell on the thoughts as her Vulture dropped off a sack of coins in front of her.  "Thanks Frosty," she called after the bird, as it cawed once and then flew off somewhere else again.

The area just outside of the town was full of light forests, but as she walked further along the noted path, she couldn't help but to see things getting denser and harder to see as she went on.  The young woman's hand went reflexively up to her blade, gripping the hilt tightly.  She had no idea if there was going to be anything coming in after her, or if she was walking into some sort of trap, but she doubted it.  Why would the bandits take the mom captive if she was the only one who could pay the ransom?

Then again, maybe it didn't really have much to do with the money, which was a thought that gave Astreya some pause, leading to the woman to frown slightly as she gripped her sword a little tighter.  It was several steps further when she realized that Kagamine's mother wouldn't come out here- that wasn't part of the quest.  The fact that things were starting to waver between what was real and what wasn't should have bothered her, but Astreya kept it out of mind- she didn't want to focus on that, not right now.

As the trees grew denser around her, the woman couldn't help but to start to feel as if something was getting the jump on her.  She didn't like this feeling, and the hand around the hilt of her sword grew a little tighter.  If her hands were free from her gauntlets, it would've shown off the white-knuckled hold she had on the handle of the weapon.

She saw the building that appeared in the distance, noting that had to be where the bandits were holed up, and as she drew closer, she became aware that there wasn't a lot of activity at all.  That sent off a few alarm bells- were they even here?  Maybe the bandits wouldn't spawn in until she found Kagamine?

The girl kept on her guard, but nothing really could have prepared her for what came next as the ground beneath her suddenly gave way.  She turned, slamming her blade into the rock, but all she got was an [Immortal Object] notification as she fell downward toward the ground, silently hoping that this game didn't have a lot of fall damage if it was a long drop.  Thankfully, it wasn't, and she hit the ground a few seconds later, feeling pain lance up her legs, but her battle healing covered it almost immediately.

"Hey...who're you?"

"Me?  I'm Astreya.  Wait- are you Kagamine?" she asked, looking across the way from where she was, more interested in the voice than she was her own environment.  Across from her, she saw a young man in a cell... but began to realize that she was in one too.  Frowning, she hefted her blade, striking the door with enough force to send it flying open.  She didn't particularly like to use that force... but she didn't really have anything to offer when it came to doing anything stealthy.  Such was the life of an armored warrior.

"Uh, yeah, that's me.  What...are you doing here?  Are you here to...to help me?" he asked, his timid voice showing some signs of excitement as soon as he realized why Astreya had arrived.

The dark-haired girl gave him a grin, saluting with her left hand as she wielded the blade with her right.  "Yup!  Your mom asked me to come deal with the bandits, so-" she began, before another door opened a short distance away and she turned, frowning.  "Speak of the devil," she murmured under her breath as she saw the bandit coming into the room.

"Hey!  What are you doing here?" the bandit called, pulling out a curved blade.

"Stay there!  I'll handle him!" Astreya called to the boy, who was still stuck in his cell and couldn't help even if she wanted him to.

Astreya glanced back at the boy who had retreated a little bit further into the cell, and she nodded to herself.  This was good- she didn't want to have to have anything that would cause him any harm.  If it was a blade breaking off or if the bandit threw a knife at her or something, she didn't know, but she really didn't want that on her conscience at all.  Besides- it was good practice for her to fight on her own as well.

Shifting forward, she turned the blade slightly, letting the handle turn parallel to the bandit's head.  "Let's see you hit me if you can't see!" she called, slamming the flat of the blade against the bandit's skull.  The figure grunted, taking a step backward away from her, feeling the effects of that strike directly on him.  Astreya could see the little 'stun' indication letting her know that it had successfully taken root.  That was good- she just now needed to take him down.

With the bandit stunned, Astreya knew that she'd need to take full advantage of that right now while she still could.  The young woman shifted forward, beginning to move her blade in the practiced way she knew how to activate the Sword Art.  She noticed, as she moved, that a few small snowflakes were created from the attack, but she didn't have much time to ponder or to look at that for very long as she closed the distance between her and the bandit.

"Hrrraah!" she roared, swinging her weapon once it had fully charged, slamming it into her foe with everything that she had.  The man being stunned was enough to really add a massive impact to the blow and she felt, rather than saw, the bandit crumple from the blow itself.  But the power behind it was not what she'd expected- this was the first time she'd used it at rank five, and there was a lot more feedback than she'd expected, and her weapon had enough force behind it to wrench out of her grip, clattering to the ground a short distance away.

"You're the one my mom sent to help me?"

"H-hey, I'm new at this!"

Despite the grievous wound the bandit had received, it looked like he was still able to put up a fight. Astreya frowned slightly, not willing to go at this with her fists.  Technically she did have the Martial Arts skill, but she didn't really think she'd want to try and figure this out without her trusty weapon at her side.  The bandit struck, but the attack basically just glanced off of her armor and she didn't pay it very much mind, ignoring that as she scrambled for her weapon.

The bandit seemed to realize what she was doing, and smartly moved in front of her, keeping the woman from getting to the weapon that would very likely end him in a single shot.  She grunted, trying to shove him out of the way but he moved at the last second, causing her to sprawl down onto the ground, hitting with all the grace and sound similarity to a tow truck chain being tossed to the floor.

Astreya wasn't weak at all, when it came to this sort of thing.  She had dealt with a lot of enemies before, but she realized that this was the first time she was going into battle with this particular sword and set of armor.  Not that she felt massively out of sorts, but with the new techniques and the new armaments, she just didn't have the same level of control that she had before.  "Tch," she spoke, the fear in her heart steadily rising, but as the bandit chose to use that time to find a weak point and target her, she realized then that there wasn't all that much to fear.  The dagger came down from on high toward her and she closed her eyes, wincing as it did.  Was this it.  Was this where it ended?

'Tink.'

The weapon, despite finding a purchase in her weakened state, didn't do any more damage than one of his actual attacks, and she blinked, looking down at herself.  Now she just felt silly.

With the absolute lack of response from the attack that the bandit had performed, it seemed that he was a little caught off-guard.  Whether that was intentional due to the game code or if there was something a little more at work here, Astreya didn't know.  But she shifted, reaching over to grab at her weapon.  "Okay you!  Game over!" she called out, driving the weapon upward, slamming it directly into he center of the chest of her opponent, causing him to grunt and fall over, vanishing a moment later.  She exhaled as she rose up to her feet, glancing over at her supposed charge, who was now watching her with a skeptical expression.

"I can fight better than that."

"If you could you wouldn't be stuck in a jail cell," the woman retorted, sticking out her tongue before she moved forward toward the door.  "Back up so I can bust you out of there," she spoke.  Still skeptical, the younger man took a step back before Astreya targeted the door, blasting it open and leaving him free to join her.  "Come on.  Let's get out of here."

"Um...I can fight too.  Maybe.  Do you have another weapon?"

"What do you mean, help fight?  Are you serious?" the girl asked, not really out of any malice, but genuinely curious.  This was going to be an escort mission, she realized, and made an inward groaning sound with a smile to remember to tell Melodie about this.  She'd mentioned that these sorts of quests were the worst... but maybe if the kid could fight, that would be helpful?  She sized him up for a moment, looking him over.  He didn't seem like he could take a hit, but she could pull all the aggro anyway.

"Okay, here," she spoke, opening up her inventory, handing over one of the other two-handed straight swords she had still in her inventory she hadn't gotten around to removing yet.  "Take a few practice swings, get used to the weight and stuff.  I'll keep all the heat off you and then we can work together to get out of here," she spoke, giving the boy a small nod.

Kagamine nodded, and he had always enjoyed playing with wooden swords, and he got used to the weight pretty easily, before he nodded at Astreya.  "Let's go."

Astreya glanced over at the boy as they walked, heading out of the prison area down the open door the bandit had come in, presumably having been checking for whoever had fallen into their trap.  But with him dispatched, they could hopefully find their way out of the bandit's lair without too much difficulty.  "How'd you get captured?" she asked evenly, mostly just curious.  "You seem like you know how to handle that thing."

The boy frowned slightly.  "I was just trying to explore the forest to help mom find some stuff.  Maybe just some extra food or whatever but I ended up getting caught by the bandits.  They figured out who I was pretty quick.  When you're a quarter fey, and there's only a handful of half-fey parents... it's pretty easy to put the pieces together," the boy muttered.

"Well don't worry.  I'm gonna get you out of here and back to your mom.  We just gotta get through-" she paused, stopping and causing him to stop as well.  "Voices up ahead.  Let's go bring the pain," she spoke, forcing a small smirk to her features.

Post Action: Howl vs Bandits 2&3

Astreya wasn't sure how well the NPC would respond at her side.  It wasn't like she was used to handling this sort of thing very often, and she wasn't entirely in the know about how they worked as allies.  The girl from the one quest in the cave had just followed her and Freyd and kept a safe distance- this one was actually going to be fighting next to her.  "Okay so here's the plan.  I'm going to get their attention first.  And then you can come in once I've got their focus.  They might get ya with an attack or two but we'll just focus on bringing them down together, okay?  We'll target one first, and then the other."

The boy swallowed, but nodded, and as the pair of them came closer to where the guards were, Astreya exhaled as she came forward, strutting into the room as if she owned the place.  "Hey boys!  Took care of your friend already- are you two next up to bat?" she asked, grinning even as she activated her Howl skill, drawing their ire toward her.  She had to keep the kid safe, even if it put her into (a very small amount of) danger.

However as he came up to attack, the bandit he'd tried to go after turned, sticking the boy, while the other did still try to come after Astreya, and she frowned, her fist tightening.

As soon as she realized that the bandits weren't just going to attack her, and only her, the young woman frowned, not at all okay with the way this was setup anymore.  Kagamine was expecting her to protect him, and if she wasn't able to do that, that was a big loss not only for her and the boy, but his mother as well.  "Hey- I'm gonna have you stay back for the rest of the fights after this one," she spoke, frowning slightly as she shifted forward, moving to adjust her positioning for a moment before she began to lift her weapon.

As she did so, whether it was out of the sudden unsurety that she was facing about Kagamine's chances of survival, or the fact that she had been finding more and more of her abilities to be wrapped with a frosty movement lately, the woman could have sworn that her weapon was starting to give off even more cold air as she whirled, slamming the blade into both of her opponents and knocking them backward.  The one that had attacked her charge before instead went for her in reprisal, the blade finding little purchase in her armor as she shifted backward, readying herself.

"Stay back," Astreya spoke to Kagamine, not really wanting the boy to get involved in this if there was good reason for him to stay back.  He wasn't nearly as skilled with a sword as he let himself on to be, and Astreya wasn't really in the mood to babysit him.  She frowned as she shifted her stance slightly, noting that between the two, one of them was looking to go after the boy again.  With a low grunt of effort, the woman brought her weapon high above her head, leading to some shards of crystal beginning to form upon it before the weapon was brought down in a terrifying crush.

The attack slammed into the bandit and sent him flying past Kagamine against the far wall, and Astreya gave a small breath as the bandit fell to the ground, before beginning to fade away.  "Okay, that's, like, another one down," she spoke as he looked on at the remaining bandit who seemed to suddenly find the fact that he was up against the powerful young woman a bit disconcerting, but the bandit pressed onward, ignoring Kagamine and going for the bigger threat- her.

The bandit and Astreya circled one another, as if seeking to find the opening in the other's guard.  Of course, it was only too late that Astreya realized that the bandit was actually trying to get closer to the boy.  Whether to attack him or take him hostage, she didn't know, but she did know that she sure as hell wasn't going to let the guy get away with it.

Some part of her, somewhere, was wore that these were both NPCs.  They were just data, they didn't have full feelings associated with them, and that they were nothing like an actual person.  Like herself, and the others she'd met.

But the other parts of her ignored that- it didn't matter to her that they were NPCs or not.  She could see the fear on the boy's face, and could see the face of his mother flashing in her mind for a moment as she looked on at him.  The need to harm was present on the bandit's face as well and the young woman hissed as she darted forward as the bandit turned, outstretching her hand.  A blast of frost came from her fingertips, unbidden, encasing the figure in a thin layer of ice and stopping his movement.

Kagamine, in a sudden realization the man wasn't moving, attacked as well, causing the attack to land solidly, the bandit fragmenting away like the other one did, leaving the two alone in the room.

"Hey what was that?" Kagamine asked, looking to Astreya as the woman was examining her own hand.  "You just froze that guy.  Like.  Ice cold," he spoke, glancing at her with some concern and confusion.

Astreya glanced down at her fingertips, before she shook her head, moving to sheathe her blade back over her shoulder.  "Like, I should be asking you, 'what was that' after that display," the girl spoke, and immediately the NPC looked away, frustration showing on his features.  "You said you knew how to handle a sword so I, like, gave you one.  That nearly got you killed."

The boy glanced back at her.  "I never fought against a real life person before.  I only practiced swinging against like.  Trees and pretend bad guys.  It's a lot scarier doing it in person."  He frowned as he looked at Astreya then.  "You don't want me to fight going forward?" he asked.

The way that he asked this made Astreya frown a little- it felt more like a quest prompt than an actual question.  "Yeah gonna have you hang back.  They don't, like, seem to care about me being there and keep going for you," the girl spoke, shaking her head.  "Safer if I just, like, stand up front and you wait for me to clear stuff out."

Kagamine watched the woman for a moment before he stepped closer to her, handing over the sword that she'd given him before to use.  Astreya grabbed it, putting back into her inventory and then exhaled softly as she looked at him.  She could tell that he did want to help, but there was a dangerous sort of situation here.  If he got in too far and got himself hurt, there was no way that she was going to be able to make sure that he came out of this okay.

"Look, there can't be that many more bandits.  I'll just go ahead and, like, clear them out, you watch from a safe distance and make sure you don't get into any trouble," she spoke, watching him to make sure he agreed and was going to listen.  She saw the slow, hesitant nod and she returned it, before reaching back to grasp at her own weapon.  "Okay.  C'mon," she spoke as she turned to head further into the room where they had been headed before running into the pair of bandits in this apparent break room.

The path that led out of the room swept upward a bit, and the stairs that led that way were carved right from the stone of the earth itself.  Astreya moved upward, keeping her breathing quiet and easy as she did so, not wanting to exert herself too bad on climbing up here.  The heavy armor she wore, while this was just a game, was still quite heavy and she needed to make sure she still had it on to defend against everything that would be sent her way.  There were likely more bandits here in the hideout, and she'd need to keep Kagamine safe.

At the top of the stairs was a doorway- although thankfully no door stood to bar her entry.  She leaned forward, glancing around the corner to see light filtering in from the room just beyond, but from where she sat, she could see several bandits sitting around, sharpening their blades and generally just milling about.  She glanced back over her shoulder to Kagamine.  "Stay here," she ordered and the boy nodded as she drew the blade from her sheath, eyes narrowed at the group.
