She struck true as the beast launched itself towards her. Side stepping, the creatures rolled right past her, unable to properly readjust its attack, leaving Nari to wonder if the increase in size meant that it was less reactive or accurate in its strikes. It was something she put aside for the moment – she didn’t want to assume something that could turn around and hurt her in the future.

Shield in front of her, Nari forced herself not to push the advantage, instead allowing the creature to rush her and hopefully tire itself out. Dodging left and right, stepping backwards and drawing it further away from the centre of the arena, dancing towards the gate she had entered in. Just as she was wondering at her own tactics, she saw her opening appear and drove her spear forwards, trying to drive a wedge in its armour further than she already had.

Nari watched as the health bar slipped further down on the creature, her own remaining steady in its full setting. She felt the enthusiasm fighting to burst through her battle calm, the success so far causing her emotions to boil beneath it. She was sure now, or at least as sure as she could possibly be, that the creature’s ability to react to her movements and retaliate with speed were diminished with its sudden increase in its ability to deal damage, and take damage.

Knowing what she had to do, Nari forced herself to settle back and let the creature come to her. Her ability to dodge and strike in kind was what provided her an advantage here, and she was ready to take that ability to its fullest in her favour. Readying herself again, she let the beast close with her, ducking, dodging and sidestepping its attempts to pin her down, before lashing out with her spear in an attack of her own.

Her spear slipped under the scales of the creature, landing another successful strike. As she twisted the spear, tearing away its defences further. As she did so, the creature suddenly slashed out with its weapon, slamming it into her side and causing her health bar to drop slightly in response. At the same time, the thorns within her shield lashed out, piercing the creature’s body in multiple places and draining the health of it further.

She could see a bare tick left in the creature’s health, and knew that the fight was almost over. With the end so close, Nari knew that she could take some risks – her own health bar had fully recovered even after the most recent strike. Letting the shield drop slightly, Nari drew her spear back, readying for another strike – suddenly lashing forwards, as the creature got closer to her. ‘That’s right, come to your doom you giant ugly…whatever you are…’

As the creature exploded into shards, Nari felt herself breath deeply, letting out a sigh of relief as the fight came to an end. A brief moment of respite, and then suddenly the alert of her win appeared before her. Nari hit the acceptance button, and then the gate behind her rose, providing her an escape from the arena. She took one final look behind her, before stepping back towards the path home.
