The message caught her by surprise, pulling her attention away from the piano she had been attempting to tune. The thing had come with the transition of her profession, but she had felt that the sound of it was off since it had appeared in her recording studio.

To: Nari-Lanreth
From:
[redacted]
Message: New intel. Town of Rig under assault by large creature. Supposed two-headed snake. Figured you’d love. Best of luck, and stay alive. Will forward anything else we find later.

The messages were also short, concise, and to the point. Closing it, she wondered again who exactly within the group was responsible for sending them…it was far different from the communiques she’d had in person with the individual responsible as the face of the information brokers she worked with.

Putting aside the consideration for the time being, she instead turned to Yuki, tilting her head to the side as she spoke. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves something more action filled to do today. Shall we get to it?”

The little fox gave a chitter of what Nari assumed was agreement, before bounding up the proffered arm and settling onto Nari’s shoulders. A final glance at the piano, she felt herself grimace slightly. She had wanted to finish tuning it. “Guess that’ll have to wait a bit. It’s not like it’s going anywhere.”

Her saunter to the teleporter pad had been calm, the blowing winds had died down a few minutes into the walk, and she’d found that she was able to enjoy the crystalline air. Snow crunching under her boots as she made her way across the small settlement, she’d relished the feel of the crisp air on her lungs, somehow invigorating in a way.

A quick bound up the steps and she’d hopped onto the pad itself, activating it with a single spoken command before disappearing in the shimmering light. A few seconds later she had reappeared, returning to existence on the pad found within Nimbus. The sudden change to artificial light played against her eyes, and she found herself taking a moment to adjust to the slightly darker light.

Stepping off the platform itself, she glanced around for any signs of what might activate the quest. Her directions had been lacking on this aspect, something she knew she’d be bringing up with her contact at a later time. Her gaze passed over what appeared to be a collection of NPCs, many being directed in various different directions. ‘An oddity, for Aincrad. That’s for sure…’

Closing the distance between herself and the NPC group, she spent a moment listening to the voices that sprung from within. Chatter focused on words tilted towards a hint of running, speaking of refugees. Although she didn’t catch any sort of verbiage that linked it directly with the village she was supposed to assist, Nari had a good feeling that this was likely the group she was looking for to activate the quest.

Eyes cast over the group, she found a well dressed individual who seemed to carry an air of authority. Pushing her way through the small throng, she approached the individual, drawing his attention with a quick greeting. “Hey, are you the one I speak to about refugees?”

“Oh, hello! Are you here to assist us? You look like a capable adventurer, perhaps you could help solve our problems!” Nari resisted the urge to roll her eyes, the dialect was almost overrated at this point – so cliché, so typical. Forcing a smile onto her face instead, she simply nodded, hoping the non-verbal cue would be enough. “I’m the mayor of Rig, a small little village a little ways away from here. Unfortunately, we’ve run into a small…well, problem. You see…the village has come under attack and is no longer safe.”

“That’s why we’ve found ourselves here, in Nimbus. We were…well, I was hoping we could get some help from the local militia, but it seems they’re unable to assist at this time.” Nari almost sighed as she knew what was coming next. Typical, so typical. “Perhaps you could assist us? I could compensate you, a bit. It won’t be a ton, but it’ll be appropriate for the work that needs to be done!”

Almost in time with his final syllable, the quest notification popped up, asking her if she wanted to accept the request. Barely even glancing at it, she hit the accept button. The mayor beamed a smile in response, jumping into a detailed explanation on how to find her way to Rig, and what to expect – all of which was just elusive enough to be not helpful.

“I’ll be waiting here for you to return! Please let me know once you’ve defeated the threat, and we can all go home again!” A hum of agreement, and she was off. Leaving behind the mayor, and the settlement as she began the quest in earnest.

The pathway beyond the settlement wound its way through the underground tunnels of the mountain that Nimbus was hidden within, eventually bringing Nari beyond and back into the open air. Sighing a breath of relief to be outside once more, she continued along the winding path, heading down towards an open valley area that the mayor had described. She could see the destination in the distance – likely an hours’ walk from where she was currently, if she kept pace.

Knowing that she could take her time, she decided to distract herself with a bit of mobbing, focusing on the few creatures she found along her pathway. Her eyes cast across the nearby area, she quickly spotted what appeared to be a collection of lizardmen, their grey-scales blending in well against the otherwise bland environment.

Taking a moment to down one of the many potions she had recently picked up, she readied herself for what she knew would be a bit of a challenge, and fun. Rushing forwards, she let her feet leave the ground as she closed in, twirling in the area as she brought herself around for a wide arc attack against the Lizardfolk, hoping to catch them by surprise.

The two creatures had begun to lift their heads as Nari sailed through the air, her spin bringing her to land just before them, the spear lashing out and slicing through the chests of both before they could even raise their arms in defence. Frozen in place by the stun and paralysis effects, Nari was given the chance to jump back, putting some space between herself and the two creatures.

Levelling her spear along the top edge of her shield, she waiting for the twitches that would signify the two were overcoming their ailments. She’d learnt long ago not to rush in, but instead give herself time to react to the actions of her opponents. Not that either of these two were serious threats to her, it was still a good habit to maintain.

“Almost too easy…” She saw the twitch, and sprung into action. Activating the sword art, she focused her assault against the target on her left, who had taken the brunt of her attack – the more likely to be dispersed quickly in this case.

The first of the two creatures exploded into shards, glittering on the air as they fell towards the ground before disappearing. The second seemed to hesitate – either surprised by the ease at which she destroyed its friend, or waiting for Cardinal to program its next action. Nari wasn’t quite sure which was the case, nor did she especially care.

Turning her attention towards it, she brought her spear into an underhand grip, pulling her arm backwards as if to toss the spear. Letting her feet carry her forward, she quickly closed the distance between herself and her new target, thrusting forward with the spear and letting it slide through her hand slightly, adding momentum to the strike.

The lizard creature raised its arms, as if to try and block the strike. ‘A valiant effort, I guess. Not that it will especially help here.’ Her eyes almost unfocused as the violet streak crossed the air, marking the path her weapon took as it raced towards the lizardfolk in an attempt to end it. She felt but a single pang of regret that the fights seemed to be almost too easy, at this point.

Whatever Nari had expected, the sudden movement of the creature wasn’t a part of it. Ducking beneath her spear tip with faster than anticipated reflexes, the lizard slashed upwards, catching the edge of Nari’s cheek with its blade before the thorns in her shield lashed out in retaliation. She gave a growl of annoyance before dropping back a step – realising that she had underestimated her opponent, and had paid the limited price for it. She glanced up towards her health bar, already refilling itself and leaving the single point she’d taken as little more than a memory.

“Fine, you want to play like that. Fine.” Shield pulled in front of her, she entered her standard battle ready position, feeling similar to the images of the phalanx fighters she’d studied in her history related classes. Smiling at the imagery, she stepped forward, forcing the creature to retreat slightly. She continued the advance, pushing it back several steps before it lunged forward towards her. Nari thrust forward with her own weapon, aiming for the midair creature in the hopes of impaling it as it charged towards her.

A deep breath released, Nari let herself lean onto her spear in relief as the fight came to an end. It hadn’t been difficult, but she still felt tired as the adrenaline slowly left her system – something that Cardinal had clearly managed to replicate from the real world, rather well. Sighing, she eyed the menu that contained what she had obtained from the fight itself – pitiful, at best.

The sound of crackling rocks caused her head to snap around, her eyes cast over the area. She barely noticed the group at first, blending in so well with the rocky terrain. As her eyes fell upon them and her body naturally pulled back into a guarded stance, the three lizardmen rose from the rocks, claws opening and closing in anticipation.

“So much for taking a break, then…” She knew she wouldn’t be able to outrun the three lithe looking creatures. Cursing silently, she deciding to take the offensive, rather than waiting on the creatures to rush her.

Sliding back away from the three frozen in place creatures, she considered her options. She knew that striking all three at once would be…less than ideal. She wasn’t built for the area of effect strikes like others – but striking each single target with her tech arts didn’t seem beneficial either. Cursing herself as she tried to wrack her brain around her next action, she watched as the three began to twitch – the stunned effect slowly wearing off.

“Stay with what you know.” Shaking off the concepts of changing up her attack patterns, she brought her shield up and her spear level, taking a single breath to look down its length before launching into her strike.

She watched as the tip of her spear began to glow with the violet colouring, signifying the activation. The trail leading from the origination position, guiding her eyes towards the intended target. She shifted her body weight to follow the path of the spear, hoping it would be enough to land a hit against it.

Her attention focused on her target, she barely noticed as the two other targets moved around her in an attempt to flank her defences. Belatedly, she attempted to bring her shield up to block one of the two attacks, doing little more than directly the strike upwards into her face. As both landed their strikes – one that she was certain would’ve been far more dangerous were it not for her armour – her health bar ticked down briefly, before almost immediately returning to its original full position as her healing took effect.

Knowing there was little to do beyond weather the minimal attacks of the other two while she focused on the singular target, she turned her attention back to the target before her – just now coming out of the paralysis her shield had inflicted upon it the moment it had come into contact with her.

Shifting her weight to dodge yet another barely passable attack from one of the flanking creatures, she thrust her spear outwards towards her initial target. She watched as it shifted its own weight in an attempt to dodge her strike, the spear reaching out towards it.

Her spear slashed across her target, barely catching it as the thing tried to shift backwards out of the way of her assault. Unable to react fast enough, it missed its own ability to lash out towards her, forced to stumble away as its health bar drained further. The second of the creatures slashed towards Nari, the claws rattling harmlessly off the shield on her right arm. The final, however, was lucky in its placement – finding the opening on her left side and running its own claws along the side of her armour and pulling an entire point of health away from her, for a single breath.

Her health returning to its full position, Nari refused to hesitate. Driving herself forwards, she aimed for the same target, hoping to end it as quickly as possible. Even though her defensive capabilities were playing havoc against her attackers, she refused to leave her damage output only to the thorns, preferring instead to take a more active approach in her safety.

Stumbling slightly in her push forward, she felt the tip of her spear imbed itself into the ground – providing her attempted target the opportunity to leap at her and provide a retaliation of its own. As it, and its fellow launched themselves at her, Nari could do little but take the brunt of the assault, gritting her teeth against it before leaping backwards and putting space between her and them – somehow avoiding the claws of the third in the process.

Eyeing up her opponents, she could see the further loss of health the second had succumbed to in response to its attacks against her. ‘At least these armour enhancements are doing what they’re supposed to. Now just to land a good hit against them, and finish this off…’

Lining herself up, she pushed against the ground and rushed towards her initial target again, unleashing with the Shatter art as she came close. The spear tip left a violet trail against the air, time seeming to slow as it rushed towards the lizard creature.

Her target exploded into the thousands of shards that signified its passing from this world and return to Cardinal, helped in turn by the thorns hidden away within her armour. Able to turn her focus towards the other two, she barely saw as the third drove its claws into her side, causing her health to dip momentarily once more.

‘Two left, and then hopefully some peace and quiet so I can recover from this insanity.’ A novel idea, if she’d ever had one. But with the way that these two ambushes were going, how quickly they had occurred, she questioned where she’d have any peace and quiet the rest of her travels on this floor.

Returning her focus to the fight, she leaned back for a moment before launching herself forwards towards the two remaining creatures. Her sword art activating as she readied her strike, bringing the spear up and into position as she crossed the distance, before thrusting it forwards.

The two creatures froze in place as Nari caught both with the tip of her spear. She took the advantage to step back and collect herself, knowing that she was quickly running out of energy to continue the fight. She could feel her muscles protesting already against the strain that they had been pushed through thus far into the fight.

“Alright, then. Not much left to do but finish this as easily as possible, then. Come on, let’s do this.” She called out at the two as they slowly began to twitch into movement again. The moment that both were completely unfrozen, Nari launched herself forwards towards them – her shield dropping slightly to balance out her sudden rush. Spear lifted, she thrust it towards the heavily damaged of the two, hoping that she could connect and end its existence now, rather than having to continue the fight for longer than necessary.

The second exploded into shards, and Nari felt a moment of relief again as she turned to face the third and final opponent. It seemed to pause at the loss of its two friends, as if it was suddenly coming to the conclusion that it was – for lack of a better description – expendable. Seeming to study her for a moment, it hesitated in its attack, allowing Nari a chance to put some distance between the two of them.

She knew that she was quickly coming towards the close of what she could do, and that her best chance was simply to focus on wearing down the health, rather than the abilities of the creature. Gripping the spear tightly, she flipped it into an underhand grip, before taking a couple of steps forward and launching the spear towards the lizard creature, careful not to lose her grip in the strong thrust as she put as much force as she could into the strike.

This thing just didn’t want to die. Nari glared at the remaining lizard creature, her mouth locked into a tight grimace as she realised she was quickly running out of energy to continue this fight. She needed to end it, and quickly.

The growl escaping her lips, she dodged yet another feeble attack from the thing, constantly being driven backwards as she avoided its more futile attempts to connect against her. Spinning, she tried to force her way around to its side, hoping to come into one of the openings it was leaving with its wide, long swings towards her. All without success, as the thing leapt back towards the area they had been, keeping her in front of it.

“Fine. Have it your way.” Setting herself into place, she pulled the shield in close, laying the spear along the top groove before thrusting it forwards directly at the thing. She let her body shift, putting momentum and power into the strike as she activated her technique again.

The sudden quiet as the final creature exploded seemed to hover over Nari. Her eyes cast over the rocky terrain around her, searching for any further ambushes, before eventually realising that she was truly alone, if only for the moment. Sighing, she let herself fall to the ground in a heap – taking bliss in the ability to do nothing more than simply collapse. The fight had taken a lot out of her, and she wanted nothing more than to simply sleep.

“Still need to go figure out what sort of creature is pestering this village, though.” She grumbled, the only response a small chirp from Yuki nestled on her shoulders. Determined to get what she could out of the moment, she lazed about just long enough to let her muscles relax a bit.

Dragging herself to her feet, she cast one final glance across the area, making sure that nothing was waiting for her to let her guard down fully. Content that she was alone and safe for the time being, she began the descent towards the village in the distance, ready to put all of this behind her.

A river. Or, at least, what was once a river. Now it was little more than a gulley that blocked her passage across the otherwise open road. Her eyes shifting to either side, following the track of the riverbed. She could see the village in the distance, still another twenty minutes walk away – assuming she could bypass the giant swathe in the ground somehow, or cross it without worry of not being able to make it back out.

Another heavy sigh as she turned and began walking to her right, seeing a dip in the distance that appeared scalable. The ambush earlier had left her on edge, and she still wasn’t quite ready to take off her armour in order to be able to climb the sides of the riverbed.

Her reluctance was eventually rewarded, as she found a curved slope that seemed manageable – even in her heavy plate. Careful on the slope downwards, she quickly found herself in the centre of the riverbed, several hundred metres away from where she had first come to a stop upon finding it. Glancing towards the far side, she began her climb, huffing slightly as her legs strained on the rise.

The rumbling came from behind, that much she was sure of – but exactly where, well that was the question she hadn’t been able to answer. Body posed to continue the climb, spear in hand and shield ready to protect herself, her eyes continued to gaze over the area. It had been almost twenty seconds, she figured. No further rumblings had occurred – but she was relatively certain that Aincrad wasn’t prone to having earthquakes.

Nothing broke the horizon, and as her breath released again, after being held for so long, she decided there was nothing further to it. Shifting her weight to complete the last few steps to the top, she was surprised when the dirt exploded before her – throwing her into an uncomfortable roll back down the incline to land at the bottom.

Climbing to her feet, she looked up to find what appeared to be two large, snake like creatures hovering in the air above her, the heads thrashing about in an attempt to find her. She paused, something in her veins going cold as she looked up at the creatures – feeling something akin to fear for the first time, in a long time.

The heads shifted down to stare at her, the eyes finally finding her form standing in the middle of the dry riverbed. “Ah, shite-“ Flinging herself aside she avoided the twin strikes as both heads launched themselves at her, before pulling herself to her feet and pulling up her shield. The health bars spawned to life above the creature, the name noting it as a boss creature. Launching herself into action, she dashed forward and raised the spear, hoping to catch the creatures with her first strike.
