Her strike slashed across the conjoined section of the main body, and Nari watched as both heads seemed to freeze in midair, their bodies shivering as the stun effect overwhelmed their otherwise constant movement.

A quick glance and she realised that there was no chance of her reaching the higher ground. Her position definitely not favourable, she settled into her defensive stance, realising that she’d simply have to survive the assault from above that would occur.

The heads slowly began to quiver again, the stun wearing off and the creature returning to life. Knowing her options were limited, she waited for the heads to come closer, before springing her attack upwards. The spear in her hand glowed violet on its tip as it was thrust nearly straight upwards, glittering with a promise of death and destruction.

Her shield raised to deflect any downward strikes that may come her way, she held the spear in place to intercept the strike – hoping it would catch her target as it tried to come to her.

The snake had had glazed her as it struck from above, barely catching the edge of her shield and sliding past – but enough to graze the side of her face with its fangs. Nari felt herself recoil, the sudden pump of her heart catching her off guard as her spear managed to puncture the side of its head, causing a tear in its face.

Sliding backwards slightly, she gave herself some space – watching as the twin heads ducked and weaved in the air above her, looking or an opening in her defence. Her health already recovered, she danced around a few of its slower strikes, before setting herself in place and anchoring her spear. Kneeling to prepare herself for the next assault better, she reactivated her sword art, waiting for the thing to come to her, rather than chasing after it. ‘Let it tire itself out against your defences, be the immovable wall.’

A shift, barely noticeable in her crouched position, as Nari took the brunt of the strike upon her shield. The impact alone was enough to knock a couple points off her health bar – quickly recovered thanks to her battle healing skill – but not enough to bring any sense of concern into her mind. Glancing over the shield itself, she could see the damage she’d done to the snake’s other head, the health bar on the creature depleted further and a slice across the second face signifying where her spear had pierced it.

Grinning to herself, she shifted herself to the left, repositioning and adopting her pseudo-turtle shell position once more. She could see over the top of her shield as the creature seemed to pause, as if unsure if it should try its attack again. Whatever hesitation it had didn’t last long, and almost faster than Nari’s eyes could follow it lashed outwards at her, both heads striking downwards in an attempt to overwhelm her.

Her spear pierced into the snake head as it rushed towards her, catching the creature of guard and causing it to pull back and away as the frost spread from the tip across its scales. She could see the cracking it caused in the thing’s scales, a slight shattering as it spread across one head and towards the main body.

Twin hissing sounds erupted across the area as it protested the pain it was receiving. Nari couldn’t help but smile in satisfaction, realising that she was well beyond the halfway point of the fight. ‘All down hill from here, so long as I can keep this up.’

Letting the shield fall slightly to the side, she rushed upwards – trying to gain momentum as she went and racing up the small side of the riverbed towards the creature. A sudden push off with her feet, and she was hanging in the air for a brief moment before thrusting her weapon towards the snake.

The frost spread further across the thing as her spear once more punctured it, the frostbite hidden within activating at the contact and cracking away the health and scales of the creature. A quick glance told her that the thing was almost dead. Setting her feet, she decided to go on the offensive, rather than waiting for her damage over time and defensive skills to finish it off fully.

Feet sliding on the sand as she tried to find purchase, she raced beneath the thing to its opposite side. The heads lashing out behind her, unable to connect with her exposed back – something Nari was thankful for as she popped out from beneath it, twisting on the spot to bring her shield up and her spear into the ready position. A single breath, and she launched herself forward, thrusting upwards and outwards with the spear in an attempt to finish the thing off with a final shattering strike.

As the creature exploded into shards above her, Nari felt a sense of relief, realising the fight was truly over. A breath later the quest notification appeared beside her, listing her achievements – including the ability to use Rig as a safe zone, something that she doubted she would do, but seemed appropriate nonetheless.

A single glance at the small village, and then she was turning back towards home, ready to return to the cold draft of the fourth – and her waiting hearths.
