[F3-PP] The First of Many Mazes <Search for the Hoya>

Recommended Posts

Today was a brand new day. She had promised her older brother that today, she will take him to a labyrinth to show him what it is like to be in combat for the very first time. The reason why Rebekah had chosen this as the quest was because of the rewards. It would be a good idea for Nicklaus to start off by earning two perfect trinkets that he can take with him for the next stage of the game. It was not everyday that a player could earn a trinket in such a safe environment. Rebekah was going to make sure that he was able to survive this dangerous maze on the third floor.

This time, for once, Rebekah was the one that was early, as she had already arrived onto the third floor at the settlement of Aruyt. This was going to be the second time Rebekah was attending this quest, and she would love to earn a vanity pendant that was a gift for others at a wedding. She knew that eventually some players will get married just not now.

As she waited near the teleportation gate of the city that was up in the trees, she wondered if Nicklaus had gotten lost. This was the first time she was meeting him outside of the comforts of the first floor. It would be weird for him but he should be strong enough, now that he is level seven after the last set of quests. There was nothing else to do but to wait for him to show up.

This was the first time Nicklaus had visited another floor other than the first floor. For some reason, her sister wanted to meet him on the third floor and skip the second floor. He thought about it for a few minutes before deciding to accept. After all, Nicklaus was now level seven and not level one. He should be safe enough on this floor. Just to make things safer, he decided he would bring some of the potions that he received from his last quest on this journey. Rebekah's note did say that this quest does require some simple combat, which he has not tried so far out here in Aincrad.

As he got changed and headed to the teleportation gate on the first floor, this time he made sure he ate before they left. Last time, he was with her sister, they had to make a detour to eat at a restaurant prior to starting this quest. Her sister was the one who recommend that they should do quests since they gave a flat amount of experience which is worth a lot more in the earlier levels. At her level, a few hundred experience points does not mean anything but for him, it was already one level. He wanted to hit level eleven as soon as possible since Rebekah had explained to him the benefits of being tier two in this game.

"Hello Brother. Welcome to the third floor of the castle. I know I did not tell you what we are going to do today, but we will take on a quest that would be perfect for you to get started on." Rebekah said. "But first before we begin, can you confirm that you ate already? We are going on a long trek into the wilderness today, and I do not want you to be hungry."

With that out of the way, Rebekah then sent Nicklaus the standard party invite request before making their way over to the NPC who would help them get this quest underway. Rebekah nudged Nicklaus to do all the talking this time as she had already done this quest previously. It was now time to get Nicklaus used to taking on these types of easy quests which were useful due to the equipment at the end and the experience level.

It was the warrior, Larbook, which Nicklaus was talking to, as they would have to go into the labyrinth and slay two monsters, that were not very strong but it would provide Rebekah's first chance to review and critique Nicklaus' battle techniques. That was also the secondary mission today, which was to force Nicklaus into situations of safe combat where she can save him if needed.

Her younger sister who had already did this quest before had decided to let him take the reigns and speak with the giant warrior, Larbook. Nicklaus was not nervous but he was surprised that she was delegating this all important task to him instead. He wonder whether or not she had already done this and would be bored to hear the exact same words once again. Therefore, he began to talk to the NPC.

Nicklaus was now learning there were two bosses inside the Labyrinth that was in the Forest of the Wavering Mist. Larbook, who knows the exact location and where to go decides to offer his help in leading the party for free. Nicklaus turns to look at Rebekah since she has already done this quest once before. Rebekah urges him to accept this offer as she does not want to do the heavily lifting and navigate for the two of them in this party. Her sister's reasoning was that someone was already offering to show you the most efficient path, so why waste additional time.

Nicklaus agreed with this assertion that her sister has said. Therefore, the group of them start to make their way out of the city of Aruyt and into the surrounding forest which engulfed this settlement. The visibility began to drop a slight bit but not enough to make it hard to see where one was going.

It did not take the group long but they were finally in the forest of wavering mist. It had been a while since Rebekah was last here. The last time she was here was when she was on the exact same journey but with a different person, Star. It had been a while since she had saw him, but she was on a more serious mission this time. Nicklaus was a lot weaker and needed guidance. As Nicklaus was her older brother, and Rebekah was an expert at Aincrad, she would be able to mold him into the perfect tank that fits her playstyle. That was something she was not going to tell Nicklaus. He would have to sacrifice his playstyle so he can support hers.

Rebekah turned to Nicklaus, "How are you feeling right now? This is your first combat quest after all. We do have a little ways to go before we arrive at the maze where the bosses are located. With Larbook leading the way, we should be fine. I do not expect any monsters to randomly attack us out of nowhere."

She wanted to know how her older brother was feeling. After all, in a party, it is important to be able to lead and especially understand every player's strength and weakness. She knew that while Nicklaus was starting out, she would have to be the party leader for now. Perhaps she will stay the party leader, but Rebekah also needed this experience of being in combat with another player as she tends to solo everything herself. Hopefully, Nicklaus will not find her too annoying with these questions.

Nicklaus was a little surprised why Rebekah wanted to know how he was feeling all of a sudden. This was unlike Rebekah's normal attitude so he thought perhaps she was possessed. However, Rebekah quickly explained to him that it was her goal to be a party leader for now. Maybe their roles may swap in the future, but she wanted Nicklaus to get used to combat first before he would go and potentially specialize as a tank. This was not a surprised for him, but he wondered whether or not it was a good idea. Given that he was the one with gaming experience until he remembered she was more experience at this Aincrad thing than he was given Sword Art Online is life or death.

He finally responded to her sister, "Thank you for asking. I feel quite well, I am exciting for my first taste of combat. I want to thank you for taking the time to guide me and picking such a safe quest for us to spend some time together." Nicklaus said.

He might not show it externally, but he was very thankful that her sister does not judge him and let him be himself to grow to be a stronger yet better player. She was there to push him and to get him better. He did suspect she did have some other motives, such as convincing him to be her tank in the party for some of the crazy quests that she was planning on taking in the future. He was okay with that as long as he was able to grow to her level and Rebekah would be able to continually get stronger over time.

Now that Rebekah can be rest assured of Nicklaus being ready, she would have to devise a strategy to tackle the monsters. Rebekah decided that she should let Nicklaus go first and make the first move. Rebekah would then be able to follow up on any attacks in case Nicklaus had missed or not done enough damage against the boss. This would also allow Nicklaus to get safely away to avoid drawing the hate by being the last player to attack the separate minotaurs.

"We will be attacking both bosses today." Rebekah declared to both Larbook and Nicklaus. It had taken them on a journey but they had finally arrived at the entrance to the labyrinth. It was now time for them to take their first step in the maze. "Nicklaus, I want you to go second after Larbook. I will guard the end of the party in case a monster ambushes us from behind." Rebekah explained.

She had done this quest once before so she knew there were no dangers attacking them from behind, however, Rebekah always wanted to be safe and needed to ingrain and teach Nicklaus about basic party formations and techniques inside a labyrinth. While it will not matter here, this could mean life or death in a much harder dungeon. That was why it was important to get in the habit and practice best practices and safe technique as much as possible so that it can be instinctive in the future.

Now that they had entered the maze, Nicklaus will now have to focus a lot more and try to keep the voice down to a minimum. They did not want to attract any unwanted monsters that may stumble into their party. They had two jobs today, which was to slay both bosses in this labyrinth before returning to the settlement of Aruyt.

This was the first time Nicklaus had entered the dangerous gloomy maze. Rebekah, his younger sister, was correct. They needed to enter in a proper formation and they need practice to stay in formation. Luckily, Larbook was able to act as their guide today, so he can be in the front of the group. This allowed them to not focus about navigating in this maze. It was going to save a lot of time. Therefore, Rebekah who was the strongest player in the party would guard the rear. This made it Nicklaus' own job to just be present and be the person in the middle.

It was different not having any responsibilities, but he knew this would not last. Rebekah was slowly trying to ease him into a role where he would be able to help lead the group or take some decision making off of her, so she can focus on dealing the most damage possible. Therefore, Nicklaus knew that this quest would be very important. They would likely debrief after this quest and challenge another one soon so they both can see if they were able to apply the knowledge that they had learned together in this experience.

This maze was exactly as Rebekah had remembered it yesterday. It was dark and gloomy. Rebekah wished if this place could have a more friendly background. The giant grey walls made it a depressing place to stay here for long. At least they were making quick work of the maze due to Larbook's amazing navigation skills. If Rebekah was leading this party, they would have been lost many times over, and the siblings would have an argument already.

Rebekah turned to Nicklaus who was in front of him. He did not have his weapon out in the maze, and it had taken Rebekah this long to recognize this error. Rebekah told Nicklaus quickly to always have his weapon in his hand or ready in the scabbard at any moment's notice especially in the wilderness. The extra few seconds to tap a few buttons in your display could be the difference between staying alive and being dead. Therefore it was always important to have the weapon on hand. They were almost there, Rebekah knew that they had already walked 10 minutes in this maze already.

Nicklaus had looked ready for this moment, and he cannot wait to finally try out some combat in Aincrad. All Rebekah hoped was that Nicklaus would not fold under the pressure. She did not want to give him any pressure as it was all on her to be able to defeat the monster if he had missed.

With that reminder, Nicklaus knew that it was a mistake previously not having his weapon available since they must be getting near to the first boss. They had walked this entire way and it would suck to not be able to find the boss. Therefore, Rebekah knew that it was important to lead Nicklaus so he would not get lost in this situation. He was very thankful for that.

Nicklaus was entirely getting anxious. This will be his first attempt at combat in Aincrad, where he would physically have to move his body. When he had played games in the past, all he had to do was to control a character into a maze where he would be able to find a map for it. This experience in virtual reality is entirely different and he was enjoying it. All he hoped was that he was able to keep up with his sister when the moment mattered.

"What is the plan?" Nicklaus asked. He realized at this moment that he did not know what the plan was and this was going to be a problem. He knew that he should have known more about the details of their travel and quest today, but he had let Rebekah handle everything for now. Hopefully, Rebekah was a master strategist, who would have thought of everything. She did have a tendency to forget to tell people but he knew that the pink hair girl knew what she was doing. After all, she has been doing this solo for a very long time. This was a rare time that she had someone with her for once.

They had finally arrived at the area where the maze opens up a little to allow for some extra space. This was where the first boss that there were facing would be located just around the corner. Rebekah had been thinking about the plan of attack and decided that it was now time to let Nicklaus know what was going to happen. He was going to attack first.

"As soon as I finish giving you the instructions, I want you to go attack the minotaur immediately. I will follow up after you in case you miss but I am confident in your abilities. Just act normal, and you should be fine." Rebekah gave some last minute instructions and pep talk to her older brother.

Rebekah had the tougher assignment, she had to make sure Nicklaus leaves this battle and labyrinth alive. She had spent so much time planning for this moment in the last two weeks. She cannot wait for this to finally happen and have Nicklaus kill his very first monster in Aincrad. It was a long time coming, as he was able to level up without fighting up to this point. Rebekah knew that combat experience is valuable and this was the perfect opportunity for him to practice and gain that much need experience before he should go out on his own.

After getting the green light from her sister, Nicklaus decided to immediately take his straight sword and activate a sword art. He then immediately ran his way towards the unsuspecting giant minotaur who did not see him coming. Therefore, Nicklaus had a perfect opportunity before it could react, all he needed to do was to ensure he could execute on this attack.

Unfortunately, Nicklaus was not used to running with his straight sword and had made some noise. The Minotaur was able to spot him immediately and began to attempt to dodge. However, it was at this moment, things had gotten from bad to worst. He had tripped over the uneven floor and fell stomach first onto the ground. He was now lying on the ground, and nowhere near the monster that he had planned to attack. This was a disaster for their group.

It was at this moment, Nicklaus saw a flash of pink hair running past him. Rebekah must have entered the battle now as he had completely failed on his attack. He would like to erase this memory from his head forever. This was the most embarrassing thing he had every done, and hopefully her sister would completely forget about this.

As soon as Nicklaus heard it was time to go, he ran right at the minotaur. However, Rebekah was unable to warn him in time. She had been here before and knew that the floor in the boss room was not perfectly flat, and if you were not prepared, you could easily fall down. Splat.

This was exactly what had happened to her older brother. He was still too confident for his own good. Hopefully, this will teach him to be a bit more humble and not brag about knowing everything in this game. As evident by this fall, she knew he had a lot of things to learn, as moving your entire body is different from video games where only the hands moves and the brain thinks. Actually, combat in virtual reality require the movement of your body and hand eye coordination.

Rebekah quickly ran past him to attack the minotaur. She knew that she would have to strike it now in the hopes that the boss would not attack the defenseless Nicklaus who was now slowly getting back on to his feet. Rebekah lunged forward and struck the boss who was still paying attention to Nicklaus. It had died immediately and exploded into the familiar blue bubbles.

Rebekah then turned back to Nicklaus and helped him off the floor, "Next time, try to watch where you are going, so you do not fall again." Rebekah said.

As Rebekah had helped him get back onto his feet, Nicklaus knew that he needed to be better for the next boss. After all, there were two bosses in this dungeon. He then heard her sister tell Larbook, it was time to find the second Minotaur. He did not expect to screw up this badly, but Rebekah was right. He had hasty rushed in without thinking about the consequences and watching where he was going. He was thankful that Rebekah had gone with him to this dungeon so that she could help clean up the mess and save him from a disaster.

"How are you so good at this? You were able to attack with such ease." Nicklaus asked. He was referring to the combat where Rebekah with a simple strike had slain the monster without any difficulties. He had always wondered how other players have done it, and why he was struggling now. He wanted to hear Rebekah's thoughts and opinion about how he can improve in Aincrad. It was going to be a very important question that he wanted to know as they were now walking towards the second monster.

This had surprised Rebekah. Nobody had ever asked her for the secrets to being good at combat. Nicklaus was the first person to ask him. Rebekah thought about what to say before responding, "It is very important to practice. I have done this so many times so that this all comes natural to me. I think the first few times is the hardest since you have to get used to coordinating everything with your body." Rebekah explained.

Rebekah knew that Nicklaus had lacked the practice necessary to be good at combat. He just need to practice and get the necessary movement to reduce any unnecessary extra movements to conserve energy. There was something else Rebekah wanted to tell him.

"I am also wearing this silver necklace, and I also have the precision add-on as one of my skills. This gives me a massive boost to accuracy in combat. For example, the standard accuracy is about fifty percent. With both of these boosts, my accuracy has increased to ninety percent." Rebekah explained. "One of the rewards in this quest will help boost your accuracy by two, which equates to a twenty percent boost. This was why I wanted to do this quest with you today, since it will help you out a lot going forward with combat."

It was a lot of math to process and understand. But if anyone could understand this, it would be Nicklaus. After all, he was a genius and knew that he would trust what she had said.

He agreed with the first part of Rebekah's answer. He needed to make sure his entire body was on the same page and not have his arms moving faster than his legs. He lacked the coordination of an experience player such as Rebekah who was a veteran of multiple boss raids back in the day. That was what he was striving to became, a solid rotational member of the floor raids. He believe he would not be strong enough for this upcoming raid, whenever it would happen, but his goal is to target the next one. All he needed to do was to grow fast enough to be eligible for the next fight.

Nicklaus was now processing all the information that Rebekah had overloaded onto him. He just had one question. Where was the source of these numbers and how do you know Rebekah was right. Therefore, he decided this was his question, but if what she said was correct, this quest would have an amazing reward at the end of it. "How did you know these numbers were correct? Where were the source for this information?" Nicklaus asked.

He was eagerly waiting for Rebekah's response but the answer had surprised him. He had not read anything in Aincrad so he would not have known the information was readily available. He also wanted to know a few more things based on her response.

This follow up question did not come as a surprised to Rebekah. He was not the first player nor he would also not be the last to read the official guidebook published by Argo that is available to everyone free of charge. The information found on here was very important and would answer a lot of the basic questions that new players who are slowly gaining experience would have in the game.

"Have you read this guidebook from Argo?" Rebekah asked. "The first volume has a lot of useful information that can help you improve your chances of survival in this game. After all, having knowledge is very powerful. The more information you can obtain and process, the more prepared you are in this game. I know multiple players who had taken part in the experiment which was how we obtained the numbers. It had taken a lot of trial and error but they finally found the solution."

She knew that Nicklaus had a copy of the book somewhere in his inventory but had not spent anytime getting to know the information on there. As they were almost at their destination, she could recall the time was flying a lot faster this time. Perhaps this was the second time she had done this quest and everything had felt a lot simpler. Rebekah was also more at ease this time as her partner for this quest was now her older brother instead of a friend. She could trust Nicklaus with anything and this made all the difference in the world for her.

Nicklaus knew that he would soon have to return to read and study the guide book. It was a mistake not doing this ahead of time, but he knew the best time to do this would be after this quest. There was nothing else he could do other than try to survive the rest of this battle. This was more important than anything else he had planned for the remainder of today.

Therefore, Nicklaus knew that it would be very important for them to be able to finish the battle. Since they were now near where the second and final minotaur in this labyrinth. Nicklaus decided to ask Rebekah, "What is the plan?" He knew that Rebekah could conveniently one shot and defeat the monster, but he thought was this even necessary. After all, he wanted an opportunity to prove himself once again, and he had hoped this time it would not end in a disaster.

There was nothing else that Nicklaus could think of other than needing to be smart. He decided to defer any decision making to her older sister given that he was still trying to learn this game. It would allow him the opportunity to just act, and not have the burden of being the party leader. He had enjoyed this bonding time with his sister, especially since she was the one planning every move and it allowed him time to just focus on preforming his role to the best of his abilities. As he has no plans to go solo at the moment, this would be fine. Eventually, he would have to go solo, so it would be necessary to learn how to be the leader, but it was not required as of this moment.

They were finally to challenge and take on the second boss in this maze. Rebekah was asked what the plan was. She looked directly into Nicklaus' eyes. She could tell her brother wanted to atone for his earlier mistake of falling in combat. What she never told him, was that she used to be the same and had done that a lot in the past. She did not want to relive those painful memories. Therefore, Rebekah knew that in order to succeed, she would have to give Nicklaus another opportunity to prove himself today.

Rebekah turned to her older brother, "We will do the same thing as the last battle. You will go first and I will follow up behind you, ready to defeat the monster if you miss. I believe you can do this." Rebekah said as she tried to give another piece of encouragement to her older brother.

She knew that he would not show his emotions but he is very glad for her encouragement pushing him onward. Rebekah got out her rapier just in case and got ready as he saw Nicklaus take off towards the final minotaur today. There was nothing she could do but watch. She had hoped that she was not needed since she wanted Nicklaus to prove to himself that he was able to rely on his own strengths and not on others to get the job done today.

With the last few words of encouragement once again, Nicklaus knew this was attempt number two. He knew he would have to try a lot harder than last time. Therefore, he began running towards the second monster with his long straight sword. He was ready to attack the monster with a simple slash. All he needed to do was to get close enough to land the attack at the giant monster standing in front of him.

Once again, they had entered from the side of the room, where the minotaur could not spot them prior to being attacked. Therefore, this was once again a very good opportunity for Nicklaus. Nicklaus ran towards the monster and landed a normal strike on the monster. However, this time the monster lost just over two third of its health. Nicklaus was just not strong enough to defeat the monster with a single strike like her sister. He knew he would have to work hard to get a lot stronger, and he would have to do it rather quickly.

He immediately jumped out of the way to allow her sister to follow up right away. He knew that it would be very important for her as she was strong enough to take down the remaining boss. This also allowed him to get just out of range to hopefully avoid being hit by the minotaur's attack next round.
