[F23-PP] Then Fell Below

Recommended Posts

Eyes of glinting blue-gold danced across the desolate streets of Aradennia, resting finally upon their quarry: a residence situated in the dead zone of Floor 23, the former Sun Elf Capital. He blinked once, and his gilded gaze was instantly purged of its glow. It wasn't often that the solitary scout found himself on any floor past ten-- but today was different. He gave the lonely home one last cursory glance before spinning on his heel, and he was gone. He'd gotten all the information he needed.

. . . .

The tavern was empty. Besides the taciturn bartender, quietly polishing a glass behind the counter, the only soul sat in that dark bar drinking was Pinball himself. He sipped the brew almost robotically. He absentmindedly considered the sweetness of elven drinks, and then finally, having made up his mind, swiped his hand through the air and opened his menu. A few short button presses brought him to his contacts; he penned a quick message to Bahr and then dismissed the interface entirely. The note read as follows:

Meet me at the dingy bar on Floor 23 when you get the chance. In that dead city.
Watched something interesting happen the other day, wanted to know what you thought about it.
Important.
Location's attached.
. . . .

He didn't like getting involved with the frontlines. In all honesty, the subject was a bit of a sore spot for him. But, whether he liked it or not, he had an unspoken deal with Bahr -- and he wouldn't shirk that responsibility. That responsibility he owed Bahr, Mishiro, himself. Countless others. Pinball leaned back in his seat, that dark and shady corner, and took his mug with him. How long had it been, since they'd been at each other's throats? How long had it been, since they'd managed an uneasy alliance? Bahr's companionship still felt strange to him. But, like all things, it got easier to accept. Day by day, hour by hour.

And as the time slipped by, he took another drink.

Mirrored bulbous reflections of text bounced from Bahr's amber orbs as they skittered across Pinball's message. It had been some time since he'd heard from the coal-haired youth. And while his impersonal tone of his message belied any sense of camaraderie, at least this time Bahr could get a drink out their correspondence. It wasn't like he was going to find what he was looking for here, anyway. Once the location data had integrated into his navigation, Bahr dispelled the fluorescent panel with a practiced flick of his wrist.

With a soft huff, he pushed his prone body away from the damp, mossy earth upon which he'd waited, thistle and twigs cascading from his frame as the makeshift camouflage disintegrated. After taking a moment to dust off any clinging debris and clumsily fumble the sweat-soaked bangs from his eyes, he started off in the direction of the nearest settlement. Through open ears and peripheral glances, Bahr took note of the landscape as he trekked, scanning for any disturbances. Unfortunately for him, no such outliers pierced the evergreen mosaic or its tranquil soundtrack.

By contrast to his point of origin, the twenty-third floor was a desolate wasteland. War had ravaged the landscape, leaving artifacts of its cruelty littered about; weapons, armor, skeletal remains. The sweetness of lush undergrowth had been pushed out by the stench of decay and brimstone, the pungent fetor carried aloft by a thick, persistent miasma that clung to the trachea and lungs. Where there had once been the snaps of twigs underfoot, now were the muted thuds of boots through soot. The Kingslayer pulled his mask above his nose and pressed on, praying (against his better judgement) that the interior of whatever hovel Pinball had found could better shield him from the ever-present squalor of such a putrid environment.

When he finally found the tavern, it wasn't hard to find Pinball. Save for the bartender, looping his glass polishing routine, there sat a single figure. Lanky and unassuming, the youth nearly blended into the darkness at the far end of the the bartop. Bahr gave Pinball a quick nod of acknowledgement as he ventured further into the foyer, the heavy clunkiness of steel boots against polished wood announcing his presence. "Ale, please," Bahr directed toward the barkeep, stride only slowing once he'd reached the vacant seat beside his intended interlocutor. He shed his crimson cloak and draped it across the backrest of the stool before taking his seat, freshly poured elven ale finding its way into his palm just as his rump hit the cushion.

One long sip later, and Bahr's visage twisted with confusion. Why was it so sweet? A momentary glance toward his partner offered no illumination. Slowly, he returned the dainty mug to the countertop, and shifted himself to better face Pinball. "Not the best beer I've had," he admitted with a nod and casually disappointed expression. "Tastes like discount Jolly Rancher."

Another pregnant pause, before, "Alright. Let's hear it."

His eyes flicked to the door as Bahr entered. He turned back to his drink, quiet, and allowed Bahr the time to sit down and get situated. Pinball's guess was that Bahr wouldn't like the drink. But he said nothing until he'd gotten comfortable and taken his first disappointed sip. Thought so. Pinball took one last drink of his own, and he felt Bahr's eyes on him. There was a long pause, and then it was straight to business.

"Would it surprise you if I told you I was just feeling lonely?"

He turned to look the man dead in the eyes, his expression completely blank. Pinball let that settle for a moment. Then he turned back to the counter and retrieved his drink.

"Nah, just kidding." The scout drained the mug of the last of the elven brew and continued. "You know about a guy named Raidou? Made a bit of a splash at the Ronbaru Roundtable." He wasn't sure if Bahr knew about the existence of the floor boss's companion event. If he didn't, he'd fill him in... but for now, he continued.

This time, Pinball's face betrayed amusement, his lips pulled back in the slightest of smiles. A shocking sight, even for someone like Bahr, who spent a good amount of time with the reclusive youth. "Practically busted the door down shouting Shakespeare, if you'd believe it. Proceeded to take a seat at the table reserved for the councilors and threaten the representatives. Completely threw the discussion off. 'The Frontlines acts on my behalf,' he said. 'Not a single one of your nations could stand against us... I've got a military that matches your best men 100 to 1,' or something."

Pinball shook his head. His good humor faded to make room for his annoyance. His voice practically dripped with sarcasm. "He's got a couple cool titles he's pretty proud about, though. Calls himself the Red Wanderer. Real cute."

He went to take another sip from his mug and was disappointed to find it empty. Instead he sighed, pushed the mug away.

"Should have seen the NPCs' faces. Dude essentially told them to sit down and shut up, expecting them to listen. As if. Their faces just about turned purple. I was surprised he wasn't tossed in a cell for it. Guess Cardinal really didn't want players to muck it up. Wish I'd been recording."

And with that, Pinball quieted down, with his head lazily propped up on his hand. He expected Bahr to have questions about it, and he was really interesting in hearing what he had to say. He left out, of course, why Pinball was there in the first place. It definitely wasn't to take part in a debate, that was for sure. But if Bahr had gotten this far without knowing about Mishiro, he figured it could stay that way. He wasn't going to bring it up.

A protracted silence hung between them, a quiet tension that was broken only when Pinball finally spoke.

"Would it surprise you if I told you I was just feeling lonely?"

The playful tone in Pinball's voice was a rare departure from their usual exchanges. In response, Bahr cracked a wry grin.

"Lonely, huh?" he replied, voice laced with mock concern. "Well, I know I'm not exactly the most comforting company. But I'm here, aren't I?" Bahr took another sip of the underwhelming elven brew, his eyes fixed on Pinball as the scout finally revealed the reason for their meeting - the enigmatic figure known as Raidou. As the brusque tapestry of words uncoiled from Pinball's lips, Bahr nodded thoughtfully, dissecting each inflection and expression as though they held the key to unraveling the mysteries of life itself. The young man had, yet again, managed to pique his interest.

Despite the tension that often simmered beneath the surface of their interactions, there was a sense of familiarity and trust in Pinball's speech. Bahr knew the youth possessed a unique talent for weaving tales and uncovering hidden truths in the virtual world they called home. As Pinball recounted the audacious exploits of the Red Wanderer, Bahr's mind worked tirelessly, processing the information and considering the implications. Occasionally he'd raise a brow in amusement at the audacity of it all, neglecting any further interaction so as not to disrupt his interlocutor's flow. He could visualize the chaos that must have ensued when Raidou made his dramatic entrance. The scout's even-keeled storytelling had a way of bringing events to life, even in the dimly lit tavern.

"A dude in red threatening the representatives and challenging the established order," Bahr mused, scooting his still mostly-full vessel of ale across the countertop Pinball's way. Rolling his eyes, Bahr sarcastically remarked, "We've never known anyone like that, have we?" He absently tapped his fingers against the polished oak, letting the statement find its mark before leaning back in his seat. "Seems to be the type to enjoy making a splash. But what's the endgame here?" His palm had turned upward. "You don't disrupt a council of NPCs just for the thrill of it. To send a message, maybe."

Still, Bahr's eyes remained latched onto Pinball's, amber hues ablaze in the flickering candlelight. He had questions, of course, but he knew Pinball was selective with the information he shared. There was always a hidden layer to his actions and motives, a layer that Bahr had yet to fully unfurl. "And what's your role in all of this?" Bahr asked, his tone neutral but probing. He knew Pinball wouldn't be involved in this matter without a reason, and he was curious to see how much the boy was willing to divulge.

"At any rate, I know you didn't invite me here just for gossip. Or this syrup they call 'ale,'" he concluded. "What's our plan regarding this guy? Have you already tracked him?" Bahr's words were laden with a sense of purpose, demonstrating his readiness to act.

Pinball caught the drink sliding over to him and snorted. "No," he replied dryly, "sure haven't." His gaze shifted to his mug, where he absentmindedly swirled the liquid within. He contemplated the situation and sighed as Bahr's musings came to a close. The whole situation rubbed him the wrong way. Still, he knew better than to withhold his opinion.

"I've got a hunch there isn't an endgame. Not one he knows about, anyway. Seems to me he's trying to do the right thing, in his mind. But that's a bad way to go about it. Left unchecked, well..." He let the idea wander, shook his head, and drank. His cheap jolly rancher beer couldn't quite wash away the bitter taste in his mouth. "You know. Making threats, demands, that whole persona, if it is one. It's just a slippery slope. It gets easier to do every time." And that, he thought grimly, is something that he could personally attest to.

His scowl deepened as he recalled the events that followed. "Oh, forgot: when they started getting closer to who might have been responsible for the whole deal, he took a stance like he was going to cut the NPC down. Demanded again they arrest him, or he'd take care of it." Pinball's annoyance was palpable. But he'd spent a lot of time in his seclusion grappling with his temper. He had much stronger control over his emotions than he used to, and that showed when almost instantly he mellowed out. He lifted his drink and shrugged. Gave his head one last exasperated shake, like this time it would finally help dispel all those negative feelings. His attempt to relax was in vain, however, as he shot up defensively in response to Bahr's next question.

"I don't have a role in it," Pinball said firmly. The indignant reply even surprised himself. He softened. "You know that. I just watch. That's all." And it was true, though not quite the full reason for his attendance that day. He sank in his chair and worked on finishing up what was left of his second drink.

The young man was grateful for the change in subject. "I just want you to talk to him. Figure out if he's got any motives or not. Try to get him to talk about his approach. Find out if there's a chance he becomes a problem or not. I tracked him before I messaged you. He's about a fifteen minute walk that way," he nodded in the direction, "if you're ready to head out already."

Bahr nodded thoughtfully as he absorbed Pinball's assessment of the situation. He knew better than to underestimate the potential consequences of Raidou's actions, and Pinball's hunch about the lack of a clear endgame resonated with his own concerns - although Bahr had his own opinions on the matter. The notion that Raidou might be trying to do the right thing in his own way was a point of contention for both of them. Bahr had seen enough of the world's complexities to understand that good intentions didn't always lead to positive outcomes.

The scowl that briefly marred Pinball's features didn't go unnoticed, and Bahr couldn't help but wonder about the scout's own experiences that might have fueled his frustration. Pinball's mention of Raidou's escalating threats and demands only deepened Bahr's unease. He had witnessed the ripple effect of such actions before, how they could spiral out of control and lead to unforeseen consequences. When Pinball asserted that he didn't have a role in the situation, Bahr raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. He had learned to respect the boundaries of their partnership, understanding that Pinball had his own reasons for his actions.

Finally, Pinball's request for Bahr to talk to Raidou and assess the situation further brought their conversation full circle. Bahr cupped his chin with his index finger and thumb, expression pensive. He knew that Pinball's request wasn't without merit. If there was a chance to understand Raidou's motives and assess the potential threat he posed, it was worth investigating. Pinball's role as a watcher and gatherer of information had its own unique value, and Bahr trusted his instincts when it came to potential trouble.

After a moment of silent contemplation, Bahr responded with a resolute nod. "I'll talk to him," he agreed, his voice firm. "We need to know where he actually stands, and whether there's a risk of him causing more harm than good. Lead the way, and we'll pay Raidou a visit." Bahr's shoulders squared with determination as he rose to his feet, gathering the thick fabric of his cloak from the barstool and slinging it back over his shoulders.

It was around this time that Bahr realized Pinball still had yet to move. "You are coming along, aren't you?"

He sat there for a moment, staring into his again empty cup. Bahr had made up his mind, but now Pinball's thoughts wandered, and he found himself stuck on his brief outburst. It was a normal enough thing -- sometimes, people got upset and reacted with a temper. But for someone with his history, who had struggled so desperately to deny himself any such release in fear of what he might do or what he might say... it troubled him deeply. Bahr stopped as he stood, asking if Pinball was coming along. He looked up, then, at his partner, and then back to the bar. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm coming." He slid the empty mug across the counter and stood. Pinball lifted the hood of his cloak as they made for the door. "Isn't that far. This way."

. . . .

It was a bit of a walk, but the two would find themselves approaching the estate in just under fifteen minutes. Pinball would slow his pace, settling behind Bahr. "That's the one, just ahead." His eyes dulled in color as he deactivated his Tracking skill. "He should still be home. You lead. I'll follow."

As was typical of the dark-haired youth, Pinball was not keen on taking charge when it came to conversation. Or confrontation, as of late. He hung back, his head low, but kept a deceptively watchful gaze on his surroundings. If anything changed in the city around them, Bahr would be the first to know. As they approached the door, Pinball retrieved a crystal from his inventory and activated it. He tucked it beneath his cloak and kept it hidden. He then nodded to Bahr. Time to get started.

The duo made their way through the dimly lit streets of the city, heading towards Raidou's estate as Pinball guided them. Bahr's determined strides led the way, with Pinball trailing behind, his cloak concealing his form as they approached their destination.

As they neared the imposing residence, Pinball deactivated his Tracking skill, and his eyes shifted to a more muted hue. He intended to maintain a watchful eye on their surroundings while Bahr took the lead in the upcoming confrontation. It made sense, Bahr supposed, that his companion would err on the side of caution, being that his was a build less stylized for combat these days. There was also something to be said about the youth's attempts to temper his own emotions and make smarter decisions. While Bahr had encouraged him to do so, and was proud of him for it, it seemed the Kingslayer had no room for similar tact on this occasion.

Upon reaching the grand entrance of Raidou's estate, Pinball retrieved a crystal from his inventory, activating it discreetly beneath his cloak. It was a precaution, a means of recording the encounter should it prove necessary later. He nodded to Bahr, a silent signal that it was time to proceed. Bahr took the initiative, stepping forward and raising his hand to knock firmly on Raidou's door. The heavy wooden portal stood between them and their enigmatic target, and as it creaked open, revealing the interior of Raidou's home, blood rushed through Bahr's ears.

This is it, he told himself, somewhat bewildered by the ease with which they'd managed to make their entrance. Had Raidou been expecting them? Or was his security always so lackadaisical?

The room within was dimly lit, with the faint glow of magical orbs illuminating the space. It was adorned with an eclectic mix of furnishings, some lavish and others more rustic, creating an intriguing juxtaposition. And at the far end of the room, seated in a plush chair, was Raidou himself. He regarded Bahr and Pinball with a calm demeanor as they entered, his amber eyes betraying little emotion. The tension in the room was palpable as the two parties faced each other, the weight of unspoken questions and concerns hanging heavy in the air.

Bahr, undaunted by the presence of the Red Wanderer, stepped forward with a determined gaze. "Raidou," he began, his voice carrying the weight of his purpose. "We've heard about your recent actions at the Ronbaru Roundtable. We're here to understand your motives and intentions."

Pinball, hidden in the shadows, watched the scene unfold, his eyes flicking between Bahr and Raidou, ready to intervene if needed. Bahr would be lying if he said the young man's presence didn't help to quell his own apprehension.

"What exactly is it you're doing, flaunting the power of the Frontlines?"

The glimmering white floor of marble glared in light from a round sunroof of muraled glass, that stunk of the sun elves ode to extravagancy. A centralized statue in feminine form embraced a garden beneath its feet held fast in a gate. A seat beyond his tastes, but the furnishings were provided so he'd accept them and stave off the need to do any shopping. The man wasn't the sort to furnish a building, his last being so gracefully bare and empty for the longest time. The sudden inclusion of a man he'd not seen in some time.

A voice spoke over the classical music that seemed to ring from the walls. Taking the fountain pen and pressing a cap onto it, Raidou folds the book as a last word falls to the page. A tan and leather bound chunk of poetry that he was trying to convince himself to write. Fiancée's orders. "Bahr, a pleasure." He'd offer with an extended hand to the small round table beneath a large window pane on its left. "Please, have a seat. I'd introduce you to my wife but she's busy in the..." A sharp cut straight to the point, his smile held even still.

"Simple, a bunch of bureaucrats don't do well with kindness. In a theatre, an act was in order. Those types only respond directly to anger or fear. I was aiming for a little of both. Shuts them up and they actually start to hear." The clatter of a teacup as he'd raise it up and pour a second helping, gesturing with a simple nod to a silver platter. "Help yourself, they are a local export from the elves. A strange biscuit, not sure the mixture but tastes a little like pork. Weird given they are vegetarian." Pulling the cup to his lips, a hefty dose of green tea unsweetened.

"As for motivations, I don't really enjoy fat cats that sit at a table and argue while we are expected to get information. But the best part was, one of those idiots: Hugh." Another pause as he'd place the cup to a saucer. "He was about to push an entire city or most the population of the floor to starvation. All because he hated Brienne's ideals enough to raise the best land they had. Tried to uproot her, and when that didn't work dude tried to kill her. That didn't work either. Zealots." Raidou shrugs and he nurses the cup.

"Why do you ask?"

And so it begins, he thought.

He had never interacted with Raidou before -- nor had he ever intended to. They were both attendees at the Roundtable, to be sure, though Pinball had remained attached to the refreshments table while Raidou had immediately taken to the stage. They were taking up similar roles now, he felt. A thorough gaze swept the room for hidden threats. For escape routes. Classical music echoed through the house as Raidou capped a fancy pen and set it, along with a tome he'd been writing in, aside. The place was well furnished. Extravagant, even. He couldn't be sure if that was just the style of the homes on the floor or if Raidou just had a taste for the finer things. From what he'd seen of him, he figured either case was equally likely.

Pinball's eyes flicked to the teacup, the silver platter, and all the other finery, then to Raidou, and back to Bahr, wearing a strange expression on his face. Pinball hung back, tight-lipped, and instead leaned against a wall a short distance away from the two, choosing to quietly observe the conversation. He'd leave the talking to his companion. He trusted Bahr's judgement.

But there was something funny about how Raidou mentioned his distaste for fat cats while sipping fine tea in his luxurious manor, enjoying a bit of writing and classical orchestration before breakfast. He was just missing the monocle and glossy moustache. Pinball quickly bowed his head, resisting the urge to smile, and allowed the exchange to continue uninterrupted.

Bahr took in the lavish surroundings, the grandeur of Raidou's abode, and the unexpected invitation with a composed exterior. There was an air of calculated opulence here that contrasted with his usual preference for simplicity. He acknowledged Raidou's extended hand with a firm shake, though suspicious leer that betrayed the platitude accompanied it. And as he looked into those Holloweeny eyes, it slowly dawned on Bahr that he'd met this man before.

When the hell had he met Raidou? His memory lapse the year prior must have still had some lasting impressions.

"Thank you for having us, Raidou," Bahr replied, taking a seat as offered. Though he wouldn't admit so aloud, there was an unease that came with the hospitality the pair were receiving. Bahr had anticipated their confrontation would be more... well, confrontational. Instead they were met with smiles and warm handshakes and offers of tea and biscuits (which Bahr refused to touch, as the sickly sweet "beer" he'd sampled earlier still stuck to his tongue).

He couldn't help but glance out of the large window at the view, albeit briefly, before returning his attention to their host. "I understand that sometimes, theatrics are necessary to get a point across. Especially when dealing with those who seem impervious to reason. Your efforts to sway them are commendable." Another hollow platitude, as Bahr's tone of voice may have indicated.

As Raidou explained his motivations, Bahr's thoughts diverged from the noble cause his host was portraying. The description of Hugh's actions and the dire consequences for the city struck a chord with him. It was a stark reminder of how power, when abused, could lead to dire consequences for those who depended on it. But where did that leave Raidou's own misuse of power? "I inquired about your motivations because I'm interested in understanding the reasoning behind your actions," Bahr replied, his tone measured. "You seem to possess a determination to address injustices and potential harm head-on. It's an admirable quality in this world. However, my purpose here today is not semantics."

He paused briefly, eyeing extravagant tea tray, but again deciding against it. "I have a message for you, Raidou. It's a word of caution, a reminder of the responsibilities that come with your position as a Frontliner. While your methods may serve justice, there's a fine line between righteousness and abuse of power. I urge you to tread carefully, for the choices you make affect not only your comrades but the entire player community."

Bahr's words were deliberate, revealing his disagreement with Raidou's methods and the potential consequences of unchecked authority, while allowing room for a response. He had come to deliver a message of warning and guidance, hoping to influence Raidou's future decisions. Much like Pinball, the irony of Raidou's "fat cats" comment was not lost on Bahr, who couldn't help but bring attention to it. "After all. Depending on who you ask, you could be one of the 'fat cats' you claim such distaste for."

"Vague threats with little proven backing, in stark colors on a stranger..." Raidou remarks taking in the sunshine that bled through the window pane, gesturing a bright morning toward an afternoon. Everclear skies peaked past, not a cloud in view. His attention peeled to Bahr, finding a curiosity in the near lack of recollection on his demeanor. Perhaps the man was forgetful, or perhaps something had disjointed his memory. "That I do, and what I understand the Tarot share the same sentiment." He'd nurse a kettle to refresh his cup.

"That's why we are allies. You do remember?"

Placing the container down, he'd glance to the tray. "I understand the lack of desire to feast upon the breads of others, but they are a local custom. One of the elves of Aradennia fancies herself a baker." Turning an outstretched hand toward the platter with a smile. "Eiola was her name. This was the first batch she didn't burn but the 3rd batch I've bought. Took me 3 days to finish the first batch up." Shaking his head to implicate a no to his old friend. "A lot of things I inherited in my sudden acquisition of this manor for my future wife. I can't really stand how gaudy this whole place appears to be." Taking a sip of his tea, as if there wasn't a care in the world.

"I am not really the type of man to buy half of what you see, moreover you would not believe how hard it is to find an interior decorator amidst the population of Aincrad. So when I found an abandoned building in a forgotten town that already had furniture, one that I could dump money on and help the city rebuild I jumped on it." He'd lean back in his chair and adjust his glasses on his nose.

"Some may see a 'fat cat' but its hardly the truth, truth was I had to grind for the better part of a week just to make it happen. On top of my normal daily errands. I haven't forgotten what it was like to start in the Town of Beginnings with nothing, and my 'frontline' guild is a crafting guild. But what we craft is the 'future'. I hardly am some lord, and my title may say guild master but you can ask any one of them. Their voices matter just as much as mine does. I know my actions effect more then just my comrades and I sure as hell hope they do."

He'd tap the cup down again, looking to Bahr plainly. "That would mean I am making a difference, and we will actually escape this nightmare together."
