[PT-PP-F16] Snakes and... Lions?!

Venrough was another location he felt required more time to explore.  As players stretched themselves across more unlocked floors, their attention spans thinned accordingly.  Even with as much effort as he put into scouting, Freyd had few stories to tell of this place.  Well, few that didn't involve pirates.  Countless coves, sheltered bays and hidey-holes dotted the coast line of this floor's volcanic islands, many of them infested with ruffians and scallywags galore.  

"I vaguely recall getting shot out of cannon here once.  Possibly with Oscar, or Koga.  Kiluia just set himself on fire."  Their hijinks brought a smile to the Whisper's face, sorely needed in these dark days.  And with a raid approaching, it was almost crunch time.  It was always almost crunch time.  But they'd learn that eventually if they hadn't already.

Decked out in new duds, freshly forged and strung weapons in hand, their party was looking more fearsome by the day.  They looked ready to stand on their own now.  Future frontliners... or replacements.  Quick to control his features, Freyd wasn't about to let pre-raid jitters ruin a valuable training mission.

"Hebishinu and the Nemean Lion are on our shopping list today.  I'll walk you through the details as we go, but time is of the essence.  Frontliners gather on twenty nine as we speak.  They'll need the drops these beasties offer."

Testing the fiery pitch and drawstring of Ren's latest gift, Foyle nodded appreciatively.  He'd been quite content with his old bow, despite assurances from his fellows that this new one was a considerable and important upgrade. 

"Why would I throw away something perfectly serviceable?!"  The rest of the group chuckled at his utterly predictable response, even as he grinned wryly back their way.  "Thank you, Ren. It's a precious gift.  I'm very grateful, and look forward to putting it to use on today's hunt."  Turning to his captain, Foyle's scrutiny immediately focused on their quarries.  Not familiar with either, he was eager to find out more.

"You mentioned pirates, but it sounds like we'll be after beasts.  Junge-bound, or something in the water?"  He'd have no trouble, either way, as an archer.  But Ren and Freyd required proximity to be effective.  "Isn't Hebishinu the legendary snake creature from these parts?"

"I was really hoping for a more temperate biome, but I suppose we deal with what we're dealt."  Notably more upbeat since their last adventure, Ren sported his fancy new warhammer with pride.  Forged with great care, and substantial thanks to the patron who'd given him most of the ultra-rare materials required, Ren considered it a symbol of changing times.  Hefting its massive adamant head over his shoulder with surprising ease, it had taken a lot of searching to give up on the classical portrayal of knightly valor that had been his original inspiration.  This more 'World of Warcraft' and less Charlemagne or King Arthur, Freyd had suggested.  Ren knew good advice when he heard it, and ran with this one late into the night.  Vinaya had heated the forge herself, preferring to participate in such a formative moment directly.

"Just point me where you need me, captain.  I'll hold whatever line you need."

Tugging his sleeve down to conceal his newly minted mechanical arsenal, even Jeeves' joy was difficult to suppress.  He'd spent a week pouring over all of the details with Ren, scrounging parts or having them custom fabricated by different craftsman to prevent anyone from stealing his designs.  Still, all the manic energy had been worth it to wrap the finished device around his wrist and test load it with a dummy dart.  He'd spent hours just calibrating the sight and testing it on clay pots and glass bottles line up behind Quaestor's shop - much to Miri's chagrin.

"Yeah.  I think we're good.  Need some field data to verify and adjust.  Something quick and agile would be preferable."

Already heading for the edge of town, he paused, insisting that someone with beefier armor stand between him and any potential harm. The others simply shook their heads and obliged, accepting that this was his way.  Freyd would share what information he had based on his last encounter with the infamous 'snek.'

"Standard rules of engagement basically hold true.  Immobilize.  Fracture defense.  Then we beat the living tar out of the target until it turns into confetti.  This one can be particularly nasty if it stays in the water, where it might try to drag you down.  We'll be wailing on it anyway, so don't panic.  Enough damage will set you free."

As they approached the small inlet his tracking talents had identified as the field boss' current lair, Freyd ordered them to spread out with ranged fighters on the flank. He and Ren approached more directly, still keeping ten feet apart to allow themselves room to maneuver.  Weapons draw, they all advanced as silently as possible, which didn't mean much when two of them were in heavy armor.  Coiled lighting sprung out from beneath the sands, its writhing muscled form lashing out every way at once.

Prepared, but still flustered by the beast's raw speed, Freyd snared it as best he could, leaving its shimmering scales shattered.

Like a flailing death noodle, Hebishinu was upon them in an instant, scattering Freyd and Ren, attempting to force them apart so that its mobility would keep them from pinning it down.  Blinding sand sprayed ceaselessly as it sought every advantage in keeping them from drawing a bead.  Thinking back to his martial arts training, Foyle calmed his breathing and trusted to the enhancements built into Perdition's Reach.  It had been made for moments like this, to strike true despite impossible odds, and bring low their enemies.

Wrath embalming a flaming extension of his will streaked into the chaos, piercing the maelstrom with crackling energy, shunting their enemy off course and interrupting whatever cacaphonic dance music it might have had in its head.  Fire spread from the point of impact, jolting Hebishinu repeatedly and preventing it from resuming its romp due to repetitive loss of muscle control. Its hissing sounded like hiccups, seriously downgrading its threat credibility while the others recovered and closed in.

Thrown from his feet when the mob first burst forth, Ren scrambled to regain his stance and seek an opportunity to enter the fray.  The captain had injured it when it unleashed its initial ambush, tearing a nasty spiral gash along its length.

"Bet that'll make it hard to rest any part of its body on the hot sand."  Parrying a tail lash, Ren felt more than saw Foyle's shot piece the haze and tear into tightly knit scales, leaving a lateral tornado-like funnel in its wake.  Recognizing his opportunity, his hammer flailed with smith's precision, driving red and black fletching in deeper. "Something about insult and injury!"  Not quite the most imposing battle cry, but it garnered a chuckle from the others in his party, appreciating the underlying sentiment.

"It's spinked to the rock. Have at it!  The arrow won't hold long."  Hebishinu was already wriggling with all its might to free itself, sensing that stillness meant its death.

Where the blast wave rocked the others off their feet, Jeeves was fully bowled over, rolling ass over tea kettle until a tree stump 'conveniently' broke his momentum.

"Oww!  Dammit.  Stupid snek thingy!"

Scrambling back onto his feet, the battle was already unfolding into pure mayhem, or has he often preferred to think of it: normal.  Ever since joining up with Firm Anima, at Quaestor's urging, he'd been sent on increasingly difficult and dangerous missions.  Freyd seemed to think him suited for them, and at first he'd protested, like he protested just about everything.  It was his personal pet peeve that others treated him like a child because of his youthful appearance and short stature.  Miri's return, while a welcome relief and catharsis, brought back all of the old baggage his sister heaped upon him just by being around.  

Still, he wouldn't trade it for the world.  Except maybe when it landed him in places like this.

As chaos cleared and the field boss' initial outburst of sand and fury abated, Foyle was better able to take advantage.  Ren had done his bit and curb stomped the thing, denying its most potent defense and exposing it to their next wave of attacks.  Streak and after vermillion streak lanced from his new weapon as contrails of sooty black filled the space between him and his foe.  Every impact wracked its serpentine body with fiery spasm, making him wonder what the hell Ren had poured into the weapon he now wielded.

"Hey, Ren.  Does this thing have an off switch?  It almost feels overtuned for this boss."  The smith just laughed, keeping his focus on their enemy and smiting it again for good measure.  Was this what it felt like to be reaching the endgame he'd heard others mention in the guild hall?  Was this the sort of power frontliners could bring to bear?  It felt far too early for him to have reached such a pinnacle, and yet...

Sulfur and brimstone might have been more merciful than the virtual artillery barrage raining down on their target, its health bar plummeting in response.  Every time it freed itself from one stinging shaft another would pierce its scales and pin it back down again.  Freyd had kept the head busy, which mostly left its whip-like tail to him.  Playing whack-a-mole with it, Ren cheered gleefully each time his hammer found its mark, until the entire mob expired abruptly.

"What?  Oh.  Is it dead already?  I was expecting... I don't know... more?" 

Shaking loose the last of the sand from him armor, a quick check confirmed that the others were equally fine.  "Big on its opening, but not so tough once we got going.  Would you agree, Freyd?"

"Everyone played their part," returned the captain, already charting their return trip to the portal.  Olympus was only one floor up, the the clock was ticking.

"These drops are fascinating," Jeeves commented, inspecting the lanky tongue provided as prize for Hebishinu's defeat.  "It mimics some of the abilities from my latest prototype.  Could they be combined?  Shame that they seem to be single use, but I suppose we could always return to farm the thing."  Running his thick leather gloves through ruddy brown locks, Jeeves' mind was abuzz with potential and possibilities.  

"Freyd, didn't this thing used to grant paralysis, or am I thinking of a different mob drop?  Some of the older guild records get all jumbled, and can be hard to follow up across game updates.  The content is just whacked, sometimes."  Fidgeting and tinkering with his crossbow, infinitely recalibrating the bloody thing , tightening various coils and tension bands.  As impressive as it was, the weapon required near-constant tuning and maintenance to keep from malfunctioning in the midst of combat.  None of it bothered him.  It was like an evolutionary process, each iteration an improvement along the path to greater perfection.

Moving quickly through town, Freyd wasted no time ushering the lot of them to the portal and floor seventeen beyond.  While the rest glanced all about, soaking in the sights like a bunch of newbie tourists, Freyd navigated the city's busy streets and led them out to the dry savannah beyond.  Lions prowled the wilder areas in surprising numbers and frequency on this floor, like the spawn rate had been boosted as a prank and no one ever went back to reset it correctly.  Were it an actual environment, they'd have decimated the prey populations early on and propagated their own demise.

"Believe it or not, this one's actually the easier of the two mobs we're facing off against today.  And that new bow of yours should work wonders, Foyle.  Pretty sure its vulnerable to fire.  The rest of us just lather, rinse and repeat.  The same tactics as before.  Don't get complacent about it, but you'll find disabling your enemies and then grinding them down with superior firepower works quite effectively in most cases."

Fortune favoured them, this time around, catching the Nemean napping was a bonus.  Despite its great size, the tawny creature was surprisingly oblivious to their approach.  Knowing his armor would give them away, like last time, Ren and Freyd swooped in from above with a long jump, catching it completely unaware.  Rimefrost and shadow merged and seared the savannah with a blast of cold that shattered half the great cat's whiskers before it even know what was happening.

Tumbling clear, Ren readied his stand for a counter, but the mob was too disoriented to manage more than a random paw swipe about forty-five degrees off its mark.  He could already hear Jeeves mocking it, and Cardinal in turn, telling them they needed more subroutine maintenance if they wanted to stand a chance.  

"Careful what you wish for.  I'll take the win when it's offered, rather than looking a gift lion in the mouth."

Landing opposite Ren, sword cleaving into the enemy's flank, Freyd could tell merely by the clinking shattersong of certain fractal formations that the stun had landed. Spinning and pivoting on heavily booted feet, he'd spring in and out more readily than someone in this much protective gear should be able, nicking and cutting down its defences a sliver at a time.  Okay... maybe chunks.  Death by a thousand cuts wasn't really his fighting style, preferring grandiose blows better worthy of a two-handed wielder.  The katana qualified, but his own tactics had changed many times since those earliest days.

"Foyle.  Jeeves.  Now."

Order given, he and Ren made way for their backup to pound the beast from afar, ready to block its escape and follow up with their next wave of strikes as soon as the opening was provided.  Leaning into his shoulder pauldron, Freyd made ready to charge again, sword in a high guard and eager to bring the desert rain.

Roaring its discontent, the Nemean pounced towards Freyd, only to fall flat onto this furry face when it discovered that Foyle's last shot had pinned its bushy tail to an adjacent tree.  Sure, it yanked the entire tree out of the ground, but the moment was still pricelessly hilarious..

"Captain.  I see another pride on patrol to the east.  They might be heading towards us."  Eagle eyes astute as always Foyle was rapidly turning into the group's AWACS, calling out approaching threat well before they become a problem.  He'd done it most recently while they faced off against the early waves of Spectral Knights, playing their melees right down to the final second for the win.

Keeping up the pressure on their foe, he also kept watch on their surroundings and offered tactical advice on their progress.  Though this role often fell to the tank, it was certainly easier to manage from a farther vantage offering a fuller view of the field.

Ever dart impact left a black-ish green marring on the mob's outer skin, making him wonder what actually lay beneath.  Did mobs even have internal anatomy?  If they did, the ramifications were interesting.  Was it always there, or only reveal itself as the layers above were exposed and peeled back?

While this was hardly the mob to be exploring such notions with, it did give him some ideas as to what experiments might be possible.  Habishinu's tongue provided a vector from which to trace the potential progress of toxins or even virulent disease. It was only in that moment that he realized how few people ever got sick in the game.  But there had been reported cases, especially of plagues among NPCs.  

"Worth more investigation," he told himself, firing another bolt at the thing's face for good measure.  No luck, this time, the thing's mane sweeping aside poorly timed or ill-positioned shots.  He might have to get closer to properly finish it off.

"Any word on when the raid will begin, Freyd?  You mentioned it was likely to be soon." An undertone of concern worked its way into the older man's voice.  "If there's anything you might need us to do while you and the rest of the frontliners are engaged with it, please let us know."  

Landing a powerful blow against the lion's muscled shoulder, Foyle knew the burden of going to war.  He'd served, and though he'd never had to face true active combat, peacetime carried its own share of threats, traumas and challenges.  A few friend had been lost along the way.  Ren caught wind of his words, and the manner in which he spoke them, instantly concerned.  For the first time they all realized why Freyd had spent so much time on their training.  The front lines could faulter, even break. And others would be needed to take their place.

"Figures you'd be the one to spot my intentions," Freyd joked, half-heartedly as his blade gauged a nasty gash open along the lion's face.  One of its eyes was looking really wonky as a result, seeming to ooze and bleed out, like its mesh was liquified.  "Have no illusions.  The front lines carry serious risk.  If the worst were to happen, I'm entrusting things to all of you.  Keep the guild together.  Keep the player base safe.  Work as a unit.  Survive."

Sweeping low, Veritas severed another vital tendon, the Nemean lion crumpling to the ground under its own weight.  "See?  You need four working legs to stay standing."  Freyd paused to glance upon them, ensuring his point was understood.  "Besides, I tried dying last time, and it wouldn't take."

Bravado was expected, sometimes even required.  But he knew well where their thoughts would take them. To the burden of a tank, and the wards under his charge, just like they and everyone else were to him.

While the others were busy getting all sentimental and stuff, Jeeves loaded another of his sample collection quarrels and fired, snaring a bit of digital flesh for further analysis and consideration.  If any of them noticed, they said nothing.  And why would they even be watching?  He'd learned long ago how best to play to expectations, and that most often meant overlooking him completely.  Hardly needing system support, he was already invisible in most crowded rooms, certainly with certain other people around.  This crew would be his camouflage.  Useful, even likeable, they served his needs and his purpose for now.  No sense squandering a good thing, especially when it just landed on his lap.

He congratulated them, cheering along with the rest as the great lion gave its last roar, but behind the goggles, wheels were slowly turning and sensing opportunity.  A vial filled with who knows what quietly slipped into his coat pockets as he reloaded.  No one would be any the wiser, and the next stage of his plans could proceed.
