[PT-F24] Fishing Fuels the Gamba

Don't try me Morningstar. You'll rue the day you said 'I like rolling unidentifieds'

It wasn't too far from Baldurs estate; thankfully with the new portal Jacobs Ladder had set up Mari was able to use a teleport crystal to get here sooner; it was the trek down that proved problematic, although Mari had the coordinates for her home saved and she could technically get there quickly...Mari just didn't want to waste such an item. Raidou had taught her to make the little trinket but it was horribly expensive to not only craft, but melt down all those teleport crystals. So, maybe Mari would sit here for a while. It could be an hour, it could be two...frankly...she hadn't decided yet. All Mari knew was that she wanted to get some fishing done before the crab boil event. The entire thing would be filled with people, and socializing - and Mari wasn't very good at either of those things. Especially with a orange crystal floating above her head.

As Mari cast out her line she couldn't help but recall a strange daydream she had...

What...an odd dream, an odd thought, it would be crazy to think anyone would want to work that hard. But maybe thats why Mari was here, dreams were mighty powerful things afterall....
As though the gods themselves were telling her that the dream held a kernal of truth- she managed to fish up a chest - no gleaming scales...but at least she had a few unidentified objects. Ready for the rolling...

Mari fiddled with her key chain as she contemplated how long she should sit here and fish- She didn't want to be late for Oscars event... and she only had a few keys - maybe she'd go until she ran out of them? Then again that could take a long while - what would the chances be of her quickly fishing up several chests?

"Just a dream after all...." Mari said to herself as she cast out her line. Maybe she was bothering Morningstar? All she seemed to do was drop off shit at his store then vanish again, only to repeat the process. There wasn't really much communication between the two other than that. Sure he had helped he out a few times, but how indebted could you be a to a person? For Morningstar, it probably wasn't much - it was mostly transactional, she was simply utilizing the service that he provided. It's not her fault that he chose to be an appraiser. He should have guessed there'd be people who didn't fight much and would sit around doing nothing but fish up chests all day.

"Heheh...Chests..."

How apt, considering Mari was going to go to a beach party after this.

Or maybe not, Mari grinned as she fished up another chest- oh how the gods of fortune smiled upon her today. Using one of her little golden keys Mari quickly opened the chest. There wasn't much of note in it, but she still had five keys left.

With another line cast, and another thunk as her line sunk straight to the bottom of the lake Mari pulled out yet another chest. What was this??? Three in a row? Damn. Okay.

Oops....make that four golden keys left. Mari shoved the key into the small rusted lock and turned it. With a click the chest sprang open. "Huh..." On top of the plethora of unidentified items, which were pretty nifty in their own right... Sat a single gleaming scale. Mari picked it up and held it to the light. This was the first time she'd gotten something like this from fishing. They were supposed to be a rare commodity, at one point Mari wanted to maximize her fishing to gain more of them - but lately she felt she'd get more just from fighting. Shame really...

With a sigh Mari placed the delicate rarity in her inventory before pulling out all the other items from the chest, some armour, and some weapons. Surely there'd be a use for all of this, right? But most everyone Mari knew were already fully decked out in top of the line gear, if anything she was the one who was behind.

Maybe this fishing trip would be far shorter than she thought...especially if she kept up fishing up chests.

Would it be considered rude for her to just shove a pile of unidentified items on Morningstar at the crab boil? Probably... Mari wasn't going to do that to him. At least... not at Oscars event. If it was anyone other than Oscar...she'd contemplate it, but Oscar was someone she was close with, intimately so. She wanted to build a better friendship with the man and that didn't start with throwing items or drinks or whatnot at people. That's probably the opposite of what he'd want at his party.

Several minutes passed and just as Mari was about to reel her line in to try again she managed to hook a single glittering material. It wasn't much, but it was something. She put it away and yawned.

It felt like something was missing.... Mari glanced around. Right...she was alone. Mari had grown so accustomed to Lancaster being at her side that it felt a little odd to be apart from him. Mari pulled a cigarette from her inventory, lit it up, and placed it behind her ear.

There was once a time where she didn't like the smell of smoke, now - it calmed her. She couldn't blame it on the nicotine - she'd have to blame it on a goofy grinning redhead.

With great confidence comes great....hubris, or something...

Mari was feeling pretty good about all the chests she had managed to fish up, so when she went to recast her line she hadn't been giving the task as much attention as she should have. The entire rod slipped right out her hands and fell into the water. "Ahh...shit!" Mari exclaimed as she leaned forward to follow it. shoving her hand into the water and blindly flailing around till her hand wrapped around the fibreglass rod. Mari gave a sigh of relief as she pulled it out of the water.

That was a close one. She almost lost it.

Come to think of it.... Mari would look over her rod. It was old....and worn. She'd need to get a new one at some point. Maybe she'd splurge after finishing off her house. It was a shame there weren't many people who seemed to enjoy fishing. Hirru did... Balder did, and her brother said he enjoyed it - but he seemed to be MIA since the day she showed him her home. Mari hoped he was doing well, whatever and wherever he was.

"Where....the hell do I get a new rod though?" Mari asked aloud. Maybe she'd have to ask Baldur.

Cause who the hell else liked fishing?

After quite possibly her first failure in months, Mari managed to fish up yet another chest. The bad luck simply washing away with the ebb and flow of the water, or something poetic like that. With the use of another golden key, Mari managed to get yet another gleaming scale. Good, maybe today would be worth it after all.

"Hmmmm...." Mari leaned backward to rest on her hands. Her eyes staring at the sky above. Virtually cloudless. Nothing but azure skies. Perfect weather for a beach party. "Ugh...Bikinis..." Mari would wear one, but she wasn't very confident in her looks. She was better, for sure...if it weren't for people like Oscar, and like Lancaster - she'd probably rock up there in regular clothing. It's a shame...that Lancaster couldn't go, she'd like to try and get him out of his lonely bubble. For too long he was living in the seedy underbelly of the world. Hell... Mari could almost safely assume it was the same thing in the real world too.

How he said he had been so cold the first few months within the game. How he was busy stealing the VRM devices - and the only reason he was here was cause he drew the short straw, had to test the device. Mari opened up her messaging system, debating on if she'd message him or not to join. Then...deciding against it, she closed the window.

Maybe it wouldn't be a good idea, who knew how notorious he was.

Another toss of the line into the water; and another chest. Another roll of the proverbial dice shifted the scales of luck ever in her favour. She pulled the chest out and placed it squarely in her lap, flashing another one of her golden keys. "After this...there's only two keys left..." She said to no one in particular. Just casually talking to herself. Taking a mental note of what was in her inventory. At some point she'd need to restock on them. Not that it'd matter....they were pretty inexpensive - the cost sunk fallacy of them was minimal. Fork out a few thousand col for the ability to sell ten times that in unidentified items? It was a no brainer.

With a click the lock opened and Mari pulled out a few soaked items, nothing really worth it. Still. The lesser ones she could sell - the rest she'd take a chance on identifying. Mari checked the time, still plenty before she had to leave for the crab boil.

And just as the scales tipped heavily in her favour they'd ever so quickly swing back to the negative - cosmic balance or something like that.

Mari had cast out her line, and waited several moments with nary a thing happening. At least this time she hadn't accidentally thrown her worn and near broken rod into the river. Mari sighed. "Who else do I know that likes fishing..." She mumbled. Seeing nothing biting she opened up her friends list. Right...She had almost no one on it. Alkor...She should probably remove him from her close friends. Baldur she knew liked fishing. Mac- he seemed too chaotic, Cordelia she hadn't seen for the logest of times. Oikawa was missing, then there was Hidden and Lancaster - both didn't seem like the type to sit and enjoy fishing.

Then again, Lancaster was Italian. He liked trout. Maybe he did enjoy it. But the proximity to water didn't seem to match his vibe.

"This one's a bust..." Mari muttered as she reeled in her line.

Mari took a moment to strengthen the knot on her hook. She cheeked the reel, some of the screws were loose, and it clattered when she shook the rod. Mari wasn't sure how long it'd last. She'd definately need a new oen at some point. Mari sighed, opening up her messenger.

Mari --> @Raidou: Do you know anyone who likes fishing?
Mari --> Raidou: Or know where to get rods? Get me one? I'll reimburse.

And with those messages sent she threw out her line again. It didn't take long for her to get another chest. Good. "C'mon Baby..." Mari said as she quickly reeled in the chest and pulled it off the hook. Being careful to lay her rod gently on the rock beside her Mari then proceeded to dump out all its contents. This chest didn't have all that much in it, no scales, barely any items, she'd almost rather get nothing - lest she waste the durability of her rod any further.

"Still...that leaves me with one key left."

The action was so common for her now, fixing the hook...casting out the line...the aesthetic little 'plop' sound as it landed squarely in the water. This was why Mari found it calming. It was easy, it was methodical. There weren't monsters, or plans, or people trying to lop off her head (most of the time at least.)

The line pulled taught, then snapped clean off. "Dammit..." Mari muttered as she reached out to the snapped line. "Not sure how much you have left in you..." She muttered to her fishing rod. And as though his ears were burning - Raidou replied

Raidou --> Mari: Yes, quite a few people. Any particular reason?
Raidou --> Mari I'll see what I can do.
Mari --> @Raidou: I need fishing buddies. My Rod's about to break too.

Any other information she could relay to him in person; he knew ahead of time what she needed and that's all that really mattered. So with a heavy sigh mari began to restring her line, threading the thin wire through small loops and fishing around in her inventory (no pun intended) for another hook. All said and done...Mari was ready to cast out again, but would her rod survive?

"Cmon, you can last one more can't you?" Mari asked her fishing rod as she cast out a line. The thunk was immediate, a chest! Great. Mari started to reel it in quickly, as bits of plastic and fiberglass began to crumble away. Just as Mari managed to haul the chest onto land her rod exploded into an array of pixels. So much for that...even if she didn't have one last key left - which she was already placing into the chest and turning the lock on - she'd have to stop. Mari dumped the contents of the chest out, this was probably the worst one yet. Shame..

Mari was hoping to end on a good note; it seemed that even with her fishing skill maxed out gleaming scales were impossibly hard to come by.

Out of keys...and with a broken rod Mari decided that was as good a place to leave it as is. There was nothing more she could really do right now anyway.
Mari would dust off her hands, and browse through her inventory. Luckily she actually had a bathing suit. Mari wasn't going to be very good at this event but hey...

For Oscar.
