SP-F10: 'Hello Darkness my Old Friend'

Recommended Posts

Mari had to leave, and she didn't want to go back on the 9th floor. No, that was his floor. Alkors floor. The floor where he usually resided. The floor where he lived as a Pker, and the floor...

...The floor where he died...

Mari was a whirlwind of emotion. She was angry at everyone in Alkors group, for being too selfish to heal him, she was angry at herself for not healing him either. Mari wished that it was Primrose, or Kazuya who died, and not Alkor. Why? Why Alkor? He was such a strong fighter. He was withdrawn from the world, and those around him. The only people he had been close with were Lessa, and herself.

Mari clenched her teeth at the thought of Lessa. The Blonde was once someone Mari looked up to and admired, but it seemed she was nothing than a petty, bratty child beneath those calm blue eyes. Blaming Mari for 'stealing' Alkor away from her. Further going on to spread rumours that Mari and Daeron were an item. Daeron was incredibly flirtatious with Mari, that much was obvious, but Mari had rebutted his attempts with her every step of the way. She is with Alkor. No. Was with.

Mari clenched her teeth, biting back tears as she followed Zelrius, the arrogant man who stole her kill, up the stairs and into the tenth floor.

Mari was expecting the door to open up to some sort of eye blinding light, but as the doors opened. There was naught but an inky blackness and a wind that sent a chill up the grieving woman's spine; and raised goosebumps on her bare arms. Mari took one look back over her shoulder at the others who were in the raid. Mulling around after the defeat of the Hydra. Mari's face turned into a look of disgust, tears still streaking down her face. They were disgusting. All of them. Selfish.

This battle, with the Hydra; showed Mari the true nature of the players of this world. Every player for themselves. The few people who chose to heal others, it was only herself and Tristan. The rest? They were as good as dead in her eyes. Filthy, disgusting, selfish monsters. Life went on about how she was a monster? How she was the depraved one? What a joke. It was him.

Mari turned her bloodshot blue eyes to the blackness before her; and stepped forward. Disappearing into the depths of the 10th floor.

There was minimal lighting on the 10th floor. It would be clear that whatever battle occurred here...would be troublesome. With the darkness, her accuracy and attacks would be down. Mari walked, aimlessly. Toward what she assumed was the main settlement on the 10th floor. Not that she could go into it, being a PKer and all. She crossed her arms over her chest, rubbing her arms. It wasn't exactly cold here, but it was a vast difference from the heat of the 9th floor.

Mari tripped and steadied herself, "Ugh." She wiped her face, she had to push forward. She had to. She had to keep going. There was no one here, the floor quiet, no players to bother her - and the few monsters that roamed the area had yet to bother her. She passed crumbled down structures, what appeared to be decaying buildings. Then, she had to stop. Just outside the safe zone.

It was here that Mari collapsed to her knees, then to her hands - crying freely. Without the beady eyes of the selfish players she left behind. Without the worry that other players would approach and ask if she was ok. No. Here...here it was just her. Mari cried, she bawled - tears dripping from her eyes and snot dripping down from her nose. creating dark droplets against the hard surface of the ground. "Thom...." She sobbed. Finally collapsing completely onto the floor, her vision blurred.

"Thom..."

Her voice was worn and broken. She had lost the only person she grew to truly care about. She lost the one man who had kept her grounded. Who, despite everything. Despite Life's lies - despite Daeron's rude attempts to sweep her off her feet, despite her crumbling guild and the constant deaths that she inflicted. Despite all that he stood, like a rock - a temple to her  sanity. Now without that...

What was she?

What was she to do?

Where was she to go?

Mari wasn't sure how long she was there, lying unmoving in the ground. No one had passed her - she knew that Zelrius and Ryu had already moved onto this floor- she watched them leave the boss room. However there was no doubt they were well and truly ahead of her. Perhaps scouting the area - or even looking for the boss room. Mari had no way of knowing how much time had passed, for the floor was in perpetual darkness.

Sure she could glance at the clock on her HUD but what was the point? What was the point in continuing forward? Mari didn't want to bother with people. She didn't want to bother with the annoyances of interacting with others. They were all bound to die. Be it by a monster, or another player - perhaps they were more than willing to throw themselves off the edge of Aincrad.

Mari slowly pushed herself to her knees, and attempted to rub the dirt off her face, but she only worsened the smear. Mari gave a sniff and took a few, deep shaky breaths. She wasn't sure what the point was. Why she should bother continuing. All she wanted to do was put as much distance between her, and the vile riff raff of the 9th floor as possible.

To do that...She'd find the boss of the 10th floor, she'd fight it alone if she had to. She wasn't going to let Zelrius take the final blow this time. That was her goal.
Mari would slowly rise her levels. She would slowly push through the floors, Mari didn't care about clearing the game. She had nothing in reality. She had no one waiting for her. But others did.

And she'd ensure they never saw their 'loved ones' again.

Mari had never bothered with a 'raid' before. She wasn't sure if that was what they'd call it, no...that was wrong. It'd be similar to a scouting group. Or, in her case. a Solo scout. Mari bought up her HUD, the town just before her -  it seemed to be called Yomi. And her hunch was right. It was the main settlement of this floor. If you could call it that. It was clearly a cavern. Mari's eyes travelled upward. There was no sky here. One would hate to be clausterphobic. There was naught but inky blackness, a never-ending blanket of black. Mari lowered her gaze to the floor, kicking at a loose pebble.

Black...

The Colour of his cloak. There would be no twilight here. No golden skies...

"Tch..."

What was the point in Reminiscing? Alkor...Alkor wasn't here, the flurry of his black cape, the twinkle in pensive amber eyes. They were all gone, Mari - although she wouldn't admit it...was in a state of shock. Her nerves and emotions were so rattled that she was in a state of perpetual numbness. She had some sort of a goal now...scoping out the 10th floor - and that was enough, no, it had to be enough to keep her sane.

Mari needed to get a closer look at the town. She grit her teeth and made her way forward.

Her first assumption was right, the town - in it's entirety was Japanese in architecture. A large wall surrounded the town, A 'La Great wall. The lanterns were dotted on the wall along the outside, creating an eerie glow. At the entrance of the town - at least from this side. Stood a large black dragon. It's dark eyes held a soft green glow, and they were focused directly on her. Mari gave a mumble. "I'm not going to enter your stupid little town." It wasn't like she could. Even if she wanted to. As a PKer there was no way to enter towns, or safe zones.

And then, it occured to her. Mari...promised Alkor she'd take the redemption quest when Alkor did. Now that he was...gone...what did that mean for Mari? Mari tilted her head up. Blue eyes focused on the orange cursor above her head. She guessed, it meant that she would remain a Pker. For the Duration of her time on Aincrad. Mari heard moans and groans, the sort of sound you'd expect from a horror movie. Not from within the walls of a town. Mari craned her neck. Trying to see the inside of the town.

There.

SHe noticed what looked to be...a zombie? Something similar? Some sort of undead denizen of the town. Was that it? Were all the NPC's here dead? Great...another punch to the gut. Like Mari needed to be reminded, to have the deceased rubbed in her face. Mari felt sick in the stomach, as she took a few steps back before turning away from the entrance to the town. She didn't need this.

The town, as hard as it was to see...seemed to surround a giant mountain, that towered high into the darkness above.  Mari squinted her eyes. This...would be difficult. She was near the town, which seemed to be the only source of light for miles. Mari didn't want to waste a skill slot on Night Vision. She thought it was a waste of time, and energy. It was a skill better suited to something else. Anything else. The only person Mari knew who had night vision was Moartea. And he seemed to have disappeared. Or died.

Mari turned away from the village and bought up her HUD. She had planned on getting a few more skills, rather - she was planning on focusing on both Charge and Battle Healing, that left one slot left for her to play around with, Mari was planning on using it for an extended weight limit. But that wasn't overly important. Mari sighed. "Better not regret this." She muttered as she selected the skill 'Night Vision' and with the confirmation, it was set.

Mari's vision blurred for a moment, and she had to stop in her tracks, rubbing her eyes. Mari blinked, as everything came into focus, her breath caught in her throat. She could see. She could see everything. She could see the intricate detail of the cracks in the hardened dirt of the cavern. When Mari looked up she could see the stalagmite high above her head, her assumption was right, it was a giant cavern. Before her, lie a desolate wasteland. A small path forked up ahead. Mari pulled out her map. Continuing forward.

This time, she had the advantage. She knew that Zelrius and Ryu would head straight to the tower, to look for the boss room. She, she was going to go do that too, but first - she was going to finish exploring the floor. She would have the advantage of knowing where everything is. And the intricate details, thanks to her night vision. The pink haired girl continued forward, eyes emitting a soft, green glow.

Mari continued forward, and as the path forked Mari had to decide where to go, to the left, it looked as though the path eventually lead to the tower - where the maze toward the boss floor was, and to her left....what looked to be some sort of old building. It was hard to tell from this distance, but at least she could see clearly. Without the night vision she'd be flailing around in the dark. She wouldn't have noticed the second structure. The tower, that would have been impossible to miss, even without night vision.

Mari sighed, running a hand through her hair. It was odd, this feeling, this detachment. She felt somewhat guilty, she should be more depressed that ALkor was gone, when her daughter died - it took Mari months to recuperate, even with his help. Now, Mari had no one to turn to, no one to hold as she cried into their shoulder. The pink haired woman furrowed her brow, as she turned to head toward the building. Was something wrong with her? Perhaps Life was right and she was nothing more than an uncaring beast.

Mari stopped in her tracks, as she raised her eyes, noticing a skeleton ambling toward her. She pulled out her blade and charged at it silently. She'd ensure she had the upper hand in this fight. She ducked as the skeleton attempted to attack her, with a crusty, chipped straight sword - and in turn she thrust the dagger into the side of its skull. bringing her foot up to kick it off. Ice began to form around its skull before quickly spreading to the rest of its body. Freezing it in its place. Mari gave a small smirk. It had no chance. This was the 10th floor? How sad. Surely there were stronger monsters lurking around in the depths of this place.

The Skeleton was frozen in its tracks, and Mari could see another - further up in the distance, it looked taller - and it seemed it also wore armour. Perhaps it was a stronger form of the mob she was facing now. Good. Mari needed distractions, she wanted to fight, to search this dark, unholy floor. She went to slash at the skeleton, but her dagger failed to break through the ice that it had caused. "What the?" She seemed shocked, normally, it would just shatter, killing the monster within it. Oh well, one couldn't win them all. Mari grit her teeth, as she watched the ice begin to melt. Soon the skeleton would be free to attack her again, but Mari had hoped that she would strike it down, before it had the chance.

Mari gripped the hilt of her dagger tighter, her eyes narrowing as she lowered her stance. She would wait, till the ice had finally melted before striking again. The water dripped off the skeleton and it began to clatter about, twitching its cracked skull side to side, teeth chattering moved its jaw. Soon, the Skelet on was able to move it's shoulders, then hands, to quicken the progress the Skeleton began to bang on the ice with its old, decrepit sword. Mari had to hand it to the mob, it was programmed to be smarter than it appeared. The ice finally melted and Mari burst forward - the skeleton didn't have a chance to react. Her dagger severe the skull from the spinal cord. It hit the ground before it, and it's body burst into shards of data. It was too weak to give Mari any loot. She sighed as she continued forward. Dagger at the ready to fight the next one.

Mari continued to walk, and as she neared the next skeleton she found that it was just a broken statue, that looked like a skeleton. Or...perhaps it used to be a skeleton but became petrified? Regardless it was an easy mistake to make. Mari was still getting used to this night vision. She saw things clear as day, however it was as though someone draped a filter over her eyes, and it was slightly disorientating.

Mari reached out to touch it, uncaring for the consequences. "Odd..." She murmured. as her hand lightly grazed the surface. The stone crumbled at her touch, whatever it was. It was old, and weak. Mari sighed, bringing her hand back and punching it square in it's stone face. The entire structure crumbled down into dust, Mari gave a small hiss as she shook her hand. The impact was harder than she expected. Mari shook her hand, before putting her dagger away to rub it with her free hand. She turned toward the structure, wanting to keep going. If she slowed down now, Zelrius would probably take on the boss on his own.

After an uneventful 10 minutes of walking she was now approaching the building. It looked like an old prison. High stone walls surrounded it, topped with barbed wire. Mari bought up her map.

'Tartarus'

'Tartarus'

That was it's name. Mari's map was slowly begining to look whole, she was proud of the work she was getting done, other players wouldn't think to scope out the entire floor. No, they were all too selfish, too busy attempting to go forward onto the further floors. Mari's face twisted into a grimace. Selfish. It wasn't about clearing floors, if it was - they'd have worked together, no. For them, it was about glory. The glory of being the first to find the boss, the glory of the final blow. Despite it being a pathetic 1HP. The glory of being some of the first onto the next floor. It was all selfish desires. To say otherwise is just foolhardy.

There was a large roar, which erupted from within the compound, and a dragon had made an appearance, a big, boney undead dragon. Mari had to take a few steps back as the large beast landed at the entrance to Tartarus, Mari noticed its HP. It was two full bands. Finally. Monsters that were strong. Mari pulled out her blade this time opting to use The Spiny Rose (+3 Damage), She decided that the attack boost would better benefit her, rather than using her dagger that inflicted frost, was it just this dragon? she was ready to fight it. However, it would appear it was not alone, nor would it be a fair fight, for a flow of zombies, and skeletons started to appear at the Dragon's feet. Mari counted the monsters....

Mari bit her lip. 12. There were 12 mobs in total, including the blasted boned dragon. It was a battle she may have a chance at winning, if she used the monster grenades she had stocked up on. She had 6 perfect quality monster grenades on hand. If she kept using them in succession. She'd win. "No time like the present." Mari muttered as she threw up a  perfect quality monster grenade. It burst just before the mass of monsters - and they all seemed to ignore her. Perfect. Mari charged forward. Ready to fight.

A Perfect quality monster grenade would distract them all for 3 turns; effectively allowing her to strike four times in a row. With that, she should be able to kill 2 skeletons, and if she was lucky, a zombie. Worst case scenario, she'd use her last grenade to make a hasty retreat.

Mari sprinted forward, She'd kill them all, she'd kill as many as she possibly could, or she'd possibly die here, in the midst of battle; against a hoard of undead creatures. Within the confines of a prison. It would be a fitting death, for someone such as her. Mari's dagger sliced through the first Zombie - cutting its HP down to naught. Mari gritted her teeth, it was a good call to use the Spiny Rose rather than her signature dagger, that 1 HP difference would mean a lot. It meant she could wipe out the zombies much quicker than anticipated. The monsters were all distracted, none were paying attention to her, they were all enthralled by the lilting violin tune that came out from the Monster grenade. It was perfect. It was such a shame, and a shock that no one had bought them form her store, they were such over powered items. Mari slashed at the zombie again, effectively killing it.

Her next strike was aimed toward the next zombie, and it destroyed it in a single hit. Mari didn't take time to hesitate, she needed to be quick, she needed to be rid of as many monsters as she could. She struck a third time, as the Monster grenade began to grow quiet, the song was almost finished. It was another fatal blow. The Zombie burst, shattering into data.

Mari went to strike a 4th zombie, but was knocked back, falling hard against the ground. She grit her teeth and cursed, as the song came to an end.
Then, all eyes were on her.

The fist Skeleton tried to strike at Mari, but she managed to roll out of the way, the second- attempted to do the same, there was no break in their attacks. She had tread into the middle of their domain, and now - without the distraction of the grenade, all eyes were on her. She managed to dart out of the way of the second strike, but the third, managed to hit. Mari gritted her teeth as the crumbling sword hit her in the shoulder. Even with her armour mitigation it was a critical attack. Luckily, that Critical was only -2HP

Mari managed to stand now, The first armoured skeleton tried to strike her but she pushed it back into the second, which foolishly was right behind the first. The two toppled over onto the floor, and Mari stepped on them to leap up to attempt to move out of the centre of the group, the zombies were beginning to surround her now, one clamped down on her hand, and Mari gave a startled scream - jamming her spare hand into its jaw she pried it off of her wrist- pushing it back. She was very thankful for her damage mitigation at this point. For another Critical strike only dealt -2HP  Mari was breathing heavily now, the pain from her shoulder and wrist began to bother her. It's not like she could rest. This was the first time, in a long time, that she found her heart pumping fast, adrenaline rushing through her veins. The other Zombies attempted to attack but she managed to dart between the two of them - they simply collided with each other, rather than her.

Zombies weren't the smartest creatures after all.

Finally, the dragon began to move, it tried to whip its long, spiked bone tail out toward her, but Mari knew what was coming. It's attack was very similar to that of the Hydra, she easily managed to jump over it, She gave a smirk as she charged into the fray again. Monster grenades could damn well wait!

Without the aid of a Monster grenade, Mari would only be able to get one attack in, luckily - the thorns on her armour dealt damage to those monsters who

had managed to hit her, even the ones who missed seemed to be grazed by the spikes on her pink hued armour. If they kept getting hit by the armour, chances are, they may, just may fall - their mindless attacks being their own downfall. Mari aimed for the monster that bit her wrist, be dammed if she was going to let it live. She shoved her dagger into the top of its skull and watched as it disintegrated. Too bad it didn't leave any loot behind, the zombies - were simply too weak to do so.

Mari guessed that the zombies were incredibly weak, HP wise, because they'd attack en masse - heck there was six here before her now. She had barely made a dent in the mass of monsters that had surrounded her. Mari wasn't going to give up now though, she wouldn't. She Couldn't.

The onslaught continued, but Mari was ready the first skeleton tried to attack her but missed- and again, the thorns on her gauntlets managed to inflict damage on it as she shoved it aside, sadly the second one managed to catch her by surprise, dealing a critical blow to the same shoulder that was injured before, Mari cried out, whipping her body around to slam her gauntlet into the third, pushing it into the nearest zombie. Both fell down, and the third skeleton seemed to gain damage from her thorns too. Good Mari thought, let them die, let them all die.

The armoured skeletons tried to attack, one landed another successful, and critical blow on her -2HP It seemed that the only blows that were hitting here, were deemed 'critical' blows, else they'd be taking away less health. Mari pushed it away. Cursing under her breath. The last zombie tried to attack, however it attacked the same time as the dragon did, and simply aided Mari, by obstructing the dragon from striking her down.

Mari gave a smirk as she wiped her brow, speaking between ragged breaths. "Too many...yer tripping...over yerselves.." she muttered.

Mari didn't hesitate, she didn't bother using a grenade, she didn't feel the need to - they had barely scathed her, and she was doing far, far, more damage to their little troupe. She grabbed a zombie from the cuff of its rotting, torn shirt and shoved her dagger into its skull. It instantly shattered, another successful one hit knock out for Mari. She took a gulp of air, this battle was tiring, exhilarating, but tiring. Her muscles hurt, her wounds hurt, and she could hear her heart pounding in her ears.

But...

Mari also felt alive

The next wave of attacks happened, but it was clear that there were too many, the skeletons all tried to attack at once, clambering over each other, creating a mess of bone and tattered cloth. Mari simply pushed them aside, next came the armoured skeletons, who were a little more practised in their movements. Both attempting to swing at Mari from either side, but she simply ducked, and both blades had missed.

The Zombie, the last zombie took this as its chance, the zombies - who were the weakest of the mobs, just so happened to be the ones landing the majority of the attacks, perhaps it was just a numbers game - since there were more zombies than any other mob. The zombie bit into her forearm -2HP but Mari just shoved it off with her free arm, her gauntlet digging into the rotting flesh of its face. Mari wrinkled her nose at the putrid smell.

She glanced up at the Bone Dragon, expecting an attack, but it seemed to just be watching pensively for now.

Mari was doing pretty well for herself, there was only one zombie left, who  - by its own downfall was already down to half its HP. Mari had essentially, almost hit the halfway point - alas, things were not moving fast enough. She grit her teeth, no, she wanted more. She wanted to get rid of them quickly. She pulled out another perfect quality monster grenade and threw it toward the group of monsters, as it hit the ground, another one of her songs started playing. Alas, using that would count toward one of her turns, Mari grit her teeth and jumped in to attack.

She decided to destroy the final Zombie, slashing down on it, she ran through it as it burst into data, aiming for the skeleton, who was now preoccupied with the violin which was playing, She struck it twice, before it too shattered. One last blow..

One last hit... Mari had to be quick with her decision, she was fast running out of time. She decided to go for the simplest route, and attack the closest skeleton, her attack was a critical hit, and her life steal ability even managed to drain it further of its HP, giving her back one hit point, it may have been nothing - but that one hit point could easily have been the matter between life and death.

The song came to a quick end, and the monsters - more so...those that were left again, set their eyes on her, but Mari was ready for them. She welcomed them, she welcomed the feeling of battle, of being alive.
