SP - F4 The Ice Cold Edge <<Avalanche>> (Completed)

Recommended Posts

In the fourth floor settlement of Snowfrost a single blue flash appeared in front of the teleportation plaza as a man in deep-sea blue armor appeared in front of it. Calrex gave a sigh as he pulled down his menu, checking his map.

"For being metal this armor seems to work well even in the chill of this floor. Either I'm getting used to it or possibly the makers of the game did not simulate the chilling factor that metal gets when left exposed to freezing temperatures."

A fog cloud escaped from the slat in the armor that overlapped where his mouth would be as he made his way over to the exit of the city, making sure his Grand Gauntlets and Grand Blade were on his person. He looked back for a few seconds to contemplate the sword on the back of his hip.

"The Grand Blade. I still can't explain why, but even holding the handle of that weapon seems to call out to that side..."

He went over to the side of the exit gate as he crossed his arms, beginning to contemplate the past events that involved the cold personality that seemed to emerge, remembering that the only time so far that it has fully manifested was when he fought the golem in his <<Breaking the Unbreakable>> quest. Every emotion that exists within a person seemed to be completely shut out: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, trust, anticipation, surprise, everything. The only thoughts that seemed to fill his mind were unbiased, analytical, logical, and calculated. It was like it took the parts of him that he usually did actively and eliminated all of the other things that made him.

"While that seems to be rather saddening to hear to someone else...it might actually prove useful. While emotions are important for making decisions, it may be more useful to put those at bay. Reading an opponents attacks, preparing a counter strategy, emotions don't seem to play a strong part in those things."

He looked back at his sword once more before giving a calming breath, turning and exiting the settlement.

"The info I received said that there was an oversized Ice Elemental dubbed Avalanche somewhere in the fields as a mini-boss. Maybe it might be the prime practice target for this blade..."

With that he set off into the snowy plains, ready to hunt his target.

A white mist seemed to escape from underneath Calrex's helmet as he made his way up a snowy hill, the white slats in the armor that showed where his eyes were scanned across the plains, "Supposedly the group of players that encountered it for the first time were farming regular Ice Elementals when Avalanche appeared. I wonder if that's the requirement in order for it to spawn..."

As he reached the apex of the hill he looked over the other side and saw that some <<Ice Elementals>> had just spawned just at the base of the hill. Calrex gave a calming breath as he clenched his fists, his eyes focusing on the closest monster, "Let's hope this works out then..."

He slowly made his way down the hill, taking care to not make too much noise to avoid alerting any other creatures to his presence. As he got within striking range of the creature he brought his right arm back, the light blue aura chains materializing around it, beginning to spiral rapidly. He quickly took a step forward and sent his fist out towards the monster in front of him.

Unfortunately his attack flew way clear of the mark as the Ice Elemental unknowingly floated to the side. It if wasn't alerted before it was now as the aura chains shot forward like a shotgun blast before shattering into a series of light blue crystals. Calrex cursed under his breath as he leapt back a few paces to gain some distance between him and the monster, "So much for the element of surprise..."

As the Ice Elemental turned and locked itself on Calrex's position it didn't make much of a noise. Instead the sound of ice moving around was the only thing that could be barely be heard. As it continued to float small ice pieces began to form together as it took form as a golem-like construct. It quickly brought a fist back as it fired a series of ice needles at Calrex.

Calrex quickly weaved back and forth through the wave of needles, save a couple that struck his Grand Chariot armor. The light blows activated the Thorn ability attacked to it as the aura chains quickly wrapped around Calrex's breastplate before breaking into shards and piercing the monster's hardened exterior, leaving small chunks leaving from the surface.

Taking advantage of the opportunity Calrex quickly sprung forward, doing a quickly front handspring as the Ice Elemental swung its fist forward in a sweeping hook. The large fist skimmed across the ground, knocking up a cloud of snow. At the same time Calrex came down from above, both fists already drawn back as he slammed both into the construct's shoulder, kicking off and landing behind it. A large crack made its way down from the top to where the armpit, and as the Ice Elemental tried to reach back the arm suddenly detached on the crack.

"Alright, guess I did some decent damage to it..."

Calrex gave a calming breath as he readied himself for another attack.

As the battle continued on neither side seemed to gain the upper hand. While Calrex seemed to be able to move fast enough to avoid the strikes of the Ice Element construct the heavy snow on the ground was hindering his movements, narrowing his mobility actions to merely leaping and rolling in order to break free of the snow's grasp. An ice fist came down where Calrex would have been second ago as he dove to the side, a splatter of snow flying up and peppering down on the landscape.

"I'm not getting any luck here. The Grand Chariot seems to be doing well in terms of keeping out of harm's way, but I can't come close to moving fast enough to be able to counterattack..."

He watched as the one-armed construct turned and faced him once more. His eyes scanned as he saw the the monster appeared to be standing on top of the snow itself, possibly a property of being the creature that it was. However, it seemed to have dedicated too much to its last strike as it seemed to...slip...and fall on its back, causing the snow around it to kick up like a wave. After recovering itself it resumed its position on top of the snow, standing on it as if it were solid ground.

"Well that's not fair. Too bad there's no way to learn that kind of skill. It might be very useful when traversing these kinds of environments."

The battle continued to rage on as Calrex continued to clash with the Ice Elemental as he brought his fists back, leaping forward and sending a flurry of blows down on the construct's chest. Unfortunately it seemed like the chest was hardened against his fists, as both his strikes and the aura chains seemed to burst harmlessly against its surface. Calrex quickly kicked off and did a quickly flip before he landed ten paces away from the golem.

As he looked in he quickly reacted as he kicked back a few more feet as the only arm the construct had left came crashing down in a hammerfist right where he was a few seconds ago. Sliding back a few paces before coming to a stop Calrex looked up as he gave a calming breath.

"So it looks like right now my fists aren't enough to take this thing down...even with it being a fourth floor monster. I had hoped to test this out on Avalanche himself, but I guess now would be better than later..."

He closed his eyes for a second as he adjusted his stance, slowly reaching his right hand back. He began to lean forward like a runner preparing for a sprint as he tensed his leg muscles.

"Alright...here we go..."

He tightly grasped the Grand Blade as he felt his thought process begin to change...

Trigger Frozen Over

"Focus...remain calm...Ice Element, a medium sized construct monster. Movement appears to be slower due to size and composition. Chest appears to be resistant to impact blows. Changing tactics to quick assault tactics. Take advantage of slow movements to reach opportunistic weak points."

Calrex's breathing pattern slowed to about ten seconds between inhale/exhale, the sound of it getting shallower, more icy, as if he were trying to breath within a frozen wasteland. Hidden underneath his helmet, his eyes dimmed until there was no light left in them as his eyes fixed on the Ice Elemental unfalteringly. He didn't blink or even twitch as his gaze seemed to pierce through the golem, as if it's existence was insignificant to him.

"Strategy developed. Draw sword..."

The sound of his sword moving out of the sheath before stopping at the lock resounded as he suddenly dashed forward faster than he was moving earlier. He had activated his <<Sprint>> ability, moving straight towards the golem, but instead of stepping heel first he was stepping toe first, his knees shooting forward before moving straight back. As he gained momentum the Ice Elemental brought its fist back before shooting it forward. The fist came down in front of Calrex, kicking up another cloud of snow, but it did not slow Calrex as he quickly dashed up the arm before jumping off the shoulder. As he reached the apex of his jump he released the Grand Blade from its sheath as he quickly dropped down towards the golem. The Grand Blade slammed down right where the clavicle of the construct would begin.

Aided by the momentum from the drop the blade traveled down the entire height of the construct before exiting out at the bottom. Calrex landed on the ground while absorbing the shock with both legs, his sword pointed straight out. He stood up and straightened himself as the white slats of his helmet continued to remain locked on the construct's "head."

"Attack successful. Judging that a single strike will eliminate the creature..."

Calrex continued to breath the icy cold deep breaths as the Ice Elemental recovered from his previous strike as it stepped back, bringing its only arm back as he brought it into a fist, thrusting it forward. At the fist flew through the air towards Calrex he brought his sword up as he maintained his straight standing stance, bringing the blade in front of him pointing towards the sky like he was about to knight a person or before beginning a duel. The fist flew straight at him.

As the frozen attack got within inches the Grand Chariot armor's Thorn ability activated once again as the light blue aura chains surrounded his sword arm and the Grand Blade. As the first slammed into his sword the chains shattered into a series of crystal shards that broke with explosive force, flying and scratching the construct's arm.

"Attack endured...preparing to launch counterattack."

Calrex gave a chilling exhale as he leapt up, preparing to take a swipe at the Ice Elemental. As he got into striking range suddenly the construct shifted ten paces to the side, making Calrex fly clear of his mark.

"Change in combat situation...construct appears to have increased mobility..."

As Calrex began to descend from his jump the Ice Element brought its fist back as it began another strike...

As Calrex continued to fall through the air the golem quickly brought its fist up as it shot it forward in a driving punch. Since Calrex no longer had any momentum he immediately flipped his Grand Blade into a reverse grip as the attack came. The attack knocked him out of the air and send him crashing into the snow at a fast rate. As he contacted the ground the impact forced the snow around him to rise up in a mist, lingering in the air for a few seconds before falling and settling once again.

The snow that remained in the air seemed to swirl in a circle as the wind formed a quick mini tornado around where Calrex was standing, the snowflakes barely touching his Grand Chariot armor before taking off into the winds once again. Even though he was punched with his back heading towards the ground it appeared that he had quickly recovered and landed on his legs, his sword arm holding the Grand Blade across his body diagonally as a guard. He slowly and calmly straightened himself as he stood back up. A long shallow breath escaped his lips once again as his gaze remained fixed on the monster in front of him.

"Hit sustained, minimal damage. Preparing tactics to eliminate target..."

He flipped his Grand Blade back into a hammer grip as he stood sideways, shrinking his profile as he brought his right side forward, his right arm coming across his chest as he flipped the point of his sword to that it was trained straight on the construct's head.

"Resuming attack..."

Calrex gave a chilling exhale as he observed the movements of the Ice Elemental as it seemed to rear up even more than it did when preparing for a punch. The construct golem it created broke apart into multiple chunks of ice as the pieces began to spiral around themselves like a raging whirlwind. Calrex's eyes didn't seem to stray from their mark as they remained fixed on the center. At the heart of the rampaging objects was a single glowing piece of ice about the size of Calrex himself. This particular piece seemed to be the center of orbit for all of the other chunks of ice as they continued swirl around at a rapid speed. Eventually it appeared that the pause came to an end as the pieces all flew at Calrex like a spiraling drill.

As the pieces got into striking range Calrex planted his stance as he kept his sword trained in the same position. As it preparing for the impact the Grand Chariot's Thorn ability activated once again. The rapidly spinning light blue aura chains appeared around the breastplate as well as Calrex's sword arm, partially wrapping up a third of the Grand Blade. At impact the chains all rotated in the direction of the chunks of ice. They shot forth from the Grand Blade as if they were part of the effect, breaking into crystals as they smashed into the incoming objects, knocking them to the side or destroying them upon contact.

After what appeared to be almost half a minute Calrex's eyes shifted as they continued to keep track of the core of the Ice Element, which was the last object being hurled at him. His arm still at the ready he quickly thrust forward. As he did all outside movement seemed to come to a stop. The pieces of ice dropped to the ground as a cracking sound could be heard. The Grand Blade's tip pierced through the Ice Element's core as the entire creature dissipated into a series of crystals.

Calrex gave another chilling breath as he flicked his sword like one would to clean blood off of it.

"Target...elmininated..."

He remained still for a few seconds before his eyes narrowed, his senses on alert once again. A loud thud could be heard a few yards away, the noises becoming louder and louder, as if it were coming towards him. Along with the loud thuds a sound similar to stone scraping against stone, along with the shaking of glass like a chandelier could be heard. Calrex turned in the direction of the sound, his Grand Blade at the ready, giving another eerily cold exhale.

"Sounds lend to a much larger creature. Scraping and glass-like sounds indicate ice. Best assumption would be the field boss Avalanche...

...

After some time waiting through the trees there appeared a fairly large monster. While it wasn't of gigantic proportions, it was certainly larger than any creatures Calrex had faced so far. The features however seemed to match almost exactly to the Ice Elemental he had just previously defeated. Even in the face of the giant construct Calrex remained calm. His eyes quickly scanned across the entirely of Avalanche as he looked for possible weak points in the creature, his eyes lingering on the points that acted as joints to give the limbs articulation, a detail that was missing from the Ice Elemental's construct.

"Avalanche's size give it more area to develop finer control. Possibly less zones of safety. Will need to continue moving to avoid enduring attacks..."

Calrex gave a chilling exhale as he flicked the Grand Blade to the side, twirling it around and over his head before settling into a ready position. He lowered his body as he twirled the Grand Blade back into its sheath, although not locked. He moved one leg back, like a runner getting ready for a sprint.

"Suspected weak points are joints and head. Will need to check for location of core. Past experience with Ice Element might point to the head or chest area. Will need to test..."

His eyes narrowed as they homed in on the head and chest areas, looking to see if there were any defects on the surface that might hints towards where the core might be located.

After a minute passed Avalanche stepped into an open area that Calrex's persona deemed suitable for combat. The open space provided much mobility without the possibility of being hindered by trees and other foilage. At the same time each step Avalanche took seemed to move enough snow that the ground underneath was exposed enough that Calrex wouldn't be slowed like his fight with the Ice Element.

"Situations suitable...all weapons ready...Proceeding to engage..."

With that Calrex rushed in, prepared to fight.

As Calrex made his way towards Avalanche the large construct turned and set its sights upon the player as it turned to face him. Calrex gave an exhale as his grip tightened around the handle of the Grand Blade, preparing to draw it. The wind seemed to shift as it began to blow in Calrex's direction, snowflakes flying past him as he got into striking range of Avalanche.

As if alerted to Calrex entering its attack range Avalanche brought its right arm back, its entire upper body twisting back like one would rotate their punching shoulder back to build up strength. For Calrex, this confirmed the higher detail that Avalanche had put into its construct compared to the more crude, toy-like joints that the Ice Elemental's golem had. After a quick second Avalanche sent its fist flying forward. The fist itself was about one and a half times the height of Calrex, but due to its size it actually moved slower through the space than the Ice Elemental's attacks.

Seeing the large mass of ice coming towards him Calrex continued his eerily calm breathing pattern as he stopped his advance, standing straight as the fist approached.

"Attack incoming. Preparing for counteraction in three...two...one..."

As he counted down in his head Calrex quickly leapt up as the count reached its end. The fist slammed into the ground beneath him as he landed on the back of the fist. He quickly ran up it, drawing his sword as he began to make quick slashes all the way up the arm before ending his run a few feet away from the shoulder. The added momentum from his dash forced him to slide, and as he reached the top of the shoulder he kicked his foot against the ground, the metal piercing the ice and serving as a crude brake. Calrex turned to face the head area of Avalanche as  he pointed his Grand Blade at it.

"Point One reached..."

Immediately moving after his thought went through his head Calrex kicked off of the shoulder, rushing straight for Avalanche's head. As he got into striking range Calrex brought his Grand Blade back as he delivered a horizontal strike across the "cheek" area of the construct, passing across and sliding as he reached the other side. He quickly angled his foot towards the ice once again to serve as a braking mechanism as he turned to face the monster once more. As he did he noticed a looming shadow growing closer and closer. Turning his head for a quick second he saw the arm of the shoulder he had just landed on was coming up to try and grab him. With a quick motion Calrex kicked off of the shoulder, doing a couple of quick flips before landing on the ground.

"The head doesn't appear to contain Avalanche's core. Suspecting that it is within the chest area. Going from previous encounter the chest may be resistant to impact blows..."

A chilling breath escaped his lips, the small bit of fog being released through a small slit in his helmet as Calrex got up from his crouching position slowly, straightening himself so that he stood upright, looking up at the chest cavity. As his eyes fell on it they remained fixed, like a targeting system would in a game. He lowered his stance before rushing in once again.

As Calrex moved in to strike it appeared that Avalanche had gotten a read on Calrex's movement patterns. As Calrex moved back into the constructs attack range it extended a fist and did something that Calrex had not seen in quite some time. The block of ice that made up the fist shot off at the wrist, flying at Calrex like a cannonball. While it didn't directly hit him the chunk of ice slammed into the ground a foot away from him, the shockwave throwing Calrex and the snow surrounding it flying. However as the impact occurred the Grand Chariot armor quickly surrounded the left side of Calrex in aura chains that burst upon impact, sending a series of crystals flying at the fist embedded in the ground before the hunk of ice returned back to the empty arm.

Calrex got knocked into the air about two feet above the ground, but his eyes continued to remain fixed on his target. Almost immediately after getting knocked away he had already began to prepare for landing, quickly flipping his legs over his head in a cartwheel as he flew through the air, landing on his feet as he slid sideways a few paces before the momentum ceased.

Since Calrex did not get knocked back from the last attack he was still within the attack range of Avalanche as he rushed in, closing even more distance as the construct lifted its leg to try and stomp on the player as he weaved his way around the snow beneath. As the leg came down Calrex stopped immediately, his momentum immediately killing as well. The leg came crashing down right in front of him, slamming into the snow beneath. A few seconds before the leg impacted the ground Calrex leapt upwards, riding the shockwave of the failed attack upwards, landing on the knee joint of the leg.

He gave a chilling exhale as he rushed up the upper leg, slashing rapidly up the length of the leg's thigh area before reaching the hip. As he spotted a stable point to stand he kicked off the leg, landing on the piece of ice that seemed to serve as the hip bone. As he landed his eyes remained fixed on the chest area, now within striking distance of his sword.

Almost immediately after Calrex landed on the ice he was currently standing on Avalanche seemed to react even faster than before as the arm on the same side quickly reached over and encapsulated Calrex, taking him up and off of the piece of ice serving as the hip bone. Avalanche tightened its grip as it tried to quickly crush the player. The fist seemed to close slightly before suddenly the hand was blown open as the Grand Chariot Armor's Thorns ability activated once again, the aura chains wrapping completely around Calrex before shattering, the effect working like a force field as the shards shot through the hand.

Calrex dropped to the ground before he landed feet first without doing a flip to slow his fall, right foot in back with his left foot forward, knees bent. His head was tilted down for a second as his mind quickly gathered information from the creature's actions.

"Appears to move faster when in vicinity of the chest area, possibly a response action when getting close to weak point. Point 2 seems more plausible location. Focusing attacks there..."

He raised his Grand Blade as he pointed it, now training it on the piece of ice serving as the chest area for Avalanche's construct body.

Calrex gave a chilling exhale as he watched Avalanche took large steps towards him. After about three steps the construct fired both fists at him once again. As the two chunks of ice flew through the air towards him Calrex clenched his free hand while he twirled the Grand Blade around his body in a quick flourish. As if preparing for the impact the Grand Chariot's Thorns ability activated, surrounding Calrex's left gauntlet in a defensive manner. Right as the fists came into striking range Calrex brought the Grand Blade in front of him and made a swift parry cut to the side, knocking the right fist to the side. At the same time he brought his left arm up and made a similar motion, except a little bit later so that the fist was within striking range. Both fists slammed into the ground to the side of him. At the same time the chains around his left arm shattered into crystals, shooting out and scratching the left fist.

After deflecting the attacks to the side Calrex lowered his stance, giving the Grand Blade another twirl before sheathing it partially into its scabbard. While his right arm remained attacked to the handle his left hand moved back and grasped the opposite end of the scabbard. With that he leaned forward and swiftly activated his <<Sprint>> ability, moving extremely fast as he closed the distance between him and Avalanche. As he did he leapt up, kicking off of the construct's leg as he leapt towards the chest. As he did he drew his sword in a reverse grip, stabbing it into the lower part of the piece of ice serving as the main upper body. With that he hung off the sword before kicking off, flipping so that he was standing on the blade.

After successfully latching himself onto the lower part of the chest area that he was aiming for, Calrex gave a chilling breath as he kept his eyes fixed on the supposed area where Avalanche's weak point was located.

"Will need to move further up..."

As he began to check for possible points to continue advancing Calrex heard the sound of a large object moving through the air. He quickly looked behind him as he saw the open hand of Avalanche's right arm coming in to try and squash him against the chest chunk of ice. He quickly crouched down as he grasped the hilt of his Grand Blade, keeping his eyes trained on the hand as it got closer and closer. As it got just a few feet away of making contact he quickly kicked up with his feet upwards, extracting his sword at the same time.

He rose up into the air as the hand slammed against the construct's body. While the hand was still there Calrex descended and landed on the hand before jumping once again, moving further up the body as he piercing the chunk of ice once again, using his sword as a platform to stand on.

As Calrex got his bearings on his sword all of a sudden he noticed that he was enclosed in a shadow. Avalanche had sent its left arm immediately after the right failed to smack him off of the chest part of the construct. This time the hand completely covered him like a dome, blocking off any escape routes. As if he was already expecting the attack he jumped and retrieved his sword as he crossed his arms.

"No perceivable avoidance paths. Bracing for impact."

The hand closed as it closed around him. This time Avalanche didn't give him time to break free as it quickly clenched into a fist around him, crushing him once before whipping him into the snow like a fastball. As he hit the ground the snow flew up around him as the momentum of the throw sunk him deep into the fluffy white mist. Calrex laid there for a couple of seconds, his eyes still locked on Avalanche as he remained silent before getting up out of the impression as he gave a chilling breath.

"Minimal damage. Resuming attack."

As Calrex prepared to rush back in for the attack Avalanche was already moving in to follow up on its critical blow just a few seconds ago. It fired its two fists in quick succession one after another. This forced Calrex to stop his advance as he switched over to evasive techniques, sheathing his Grand Blade while keeping his hand hand still on the hilt.

As the left fist got into striking range Calrex quickly jumped to the side, far enough that the fist sunk into the snow without even scratching him. The same happened with the right fist as he kicked forward and used his <<Sprint>> ability to quickly get distance between him and the impact zone. This fist also sank into the snow as it slammed into the ground.

After avoiding the attacks Calrex gave a cold exhale as he kept his eyes on the chest part of Avalanche's construct. He drew the Grand Blade once again as he prepared to move in.

After firing both of its fists at Calrex Avalanche tried to continue its assault to try and wear down the player as it raised its leg to try and stomp on him. Unfortunately it appeared that the leg that was raised was important for maintaining its balance. As the leg raised in the air the other leg slid out from underneath slowly as the construct crashed into the ground. Upon impact a large snow wave seemed to emanate from its crash location.

As the wave came towards Calrex he exhaled as he quickly crouched and leapt up in a front flip. The tip of the wave licked his bangs as it blew by. After clearing the wave he gave a quick twist before landing on the ground, sliding as he stopped a few feet from the construct.

"Currently exposed. Continuing assasult."

He rushed forward as he leapt up into the air once again, focusing on the chest area as he readied his Grand Blade.
