He swung, and as the negativity in the back of his mind had predicted, missed the monster entirely. The length of his blade sank into the side of the monster following his lunge, stabbing nearly down to the hilt before he pulled his arm back. The monster swung at him with a large foreleg, but missed as Takao ducked underneath and dropped down into a tumble. His blade sank into the monster's large side and tore through the rocky flesh, leaving a wave of a red wound in its wake as it exited the back end. The massive hulking beast reared up onto its hind legs, then slammed down on the hard dry earth, and broke into a powerful sprint. Takao dove to the side and ducked and rolled to safety, then returned to his feet a mere second later with practiced grace. The health gauge floating beside its head indicated it had been dropped down to orange, which was a dangerous place to be in terms of life when it came to a death game. His green eyes flicked to the monster as it closed the distance between them for him. He raised his sword and ducked under the monster as it reared up onto its hind legs again, slashing the soft underside while mid-roll, and coming out on the other side unscathed. Its health dwindled away to nothing, and upon reaching the end of its health gauge, the Rock Eater burst into a massive collection of shards of data and disappeared. Takao exhaled a breath and wiped his face with his gloved hand before storing his sword back into the scabbard on his back. Unfortunately he very quickly learned that the monster was uninterested in both him and his food, which made his head drop with disappointment. He ran a hand through his hair and exhaled a sigh, then stood up and brushed his clothing off. He was much too exhausted, both physically and mentally, to wear his usual smile. He wasn't defeated just yet, he still had quite a bit of fight left in him, though it'd be inhuman of him not to feel a bit discouraged. His luck so far hadn't been the best, but with each passing moment, he felt his persistence growing stronger. He wasn't about to let a few unfortunate metaphorical rolls of the dice(hue) get him down. Takao trudged up the same dune he'd watched the monster scurry up and saw it trotting off in the opposite direction, with more monsters appearing in the distance. Takao 0 Posted August 6, 2015 Author #49 Report Share Posted August 6, 2015 The Dune Rat that Takao had been followed had entered a small flat area surrounded by tall tunes on each side, the tallest of which Takao had decided to seat himself upon. He watched the monster from a safe distance, confident that he wouldn't accidentally catch its attention and incite any unwanted aggression. Takao dropped his arm over his right knee and leaned his weight forward, supporting his head with his hand. Most of the monsters in the area didn't seem to care about the imp monster running around, and Takao still had a good bit of time left before he could attempt to tame it again, so he opted to simply observe the monsters from afar. Takao 0 Posted August 6, 2015 Author #50 Report Share Posted August 6, 2015 Even while observing in the distance, Takao swore he could empathetically feel the annoyance of the hooded monster that the Dune Rat was irritating unrelentingly. It brought an amused smile to his face to watch the smaller monster tease the monster that only stood a few inches taller. The red imp monster threw down its hood, poked and prodded it every time it took a reactive swipe at him, and just made itself out to be a general pest. It was entertaining, in a way. Takao allowed himself to slide down the dune he sat upon just a bit, slipping down into the slightest bit of shade that came from the large bank of loose sediment. Observing monster behaviour was interesting and, to an extent, entertaining, but this was quickly becoming unbearable. A second hooded monster appeared while the Dune Rat pestered the first, and together the two monsters had begun to get rather violent with their impish pest. Their intentions were clear, so Takao felt the need to intervene. He stood up and slid down the loose sediment that made up the sand dune he'd been resting on. In the same motion, his hand had reached back for the sword and pulled it free of the scabbard. His boots hit the hard dirt below and he broke into a light jog. He approached the two hooded creatures from the direction they were facing, immediately garnering their attention when he was within range. Two sets of glowing red eyes set upon him as the monsters prioritized, leaving the imp monster behind in favour of attacking Takao instead. Quote Report Link to post Share on other sites

Had he been a more cynical individual, he may have let the nature of Aincrad run its course, but he was considerably more benevolent than that. Which was precisely why he would kill these two monsters instead! Despite his resolve to save the little pest of a monster, the fight had a rocky start. He grasped his sword with both hands, a feature he was sure to have specifically requested when the sword was forged. It conformed much more to the standards of a hand and a half sword than a pure one handed sword, which was perfect for a setting where statistics overruled his natural strength. He could wield it just as effectively with one hand as he could with two, though most of his training prior to Sword Art Online leaned toward the latter. Size in Aincrad had a funny way of denoting health or strength, especially among monsters of the same type, so he was sure that the one before him was the most dangerous. The other was still a danger he would keep an eye out for, even as it moved to circle around him. Takao closed the distance between him and the largest kobold with a few quick steps, and swung his sword forward with his right hand. His left hand provided additional leverage that allowed the edge to cut deep through the small monster's flesh, knocking both the kobold off its feet and a fair deal of points off its health gauge. Takao's diagonal swipe that had been performed in the same manner that he had just done an instant ago missed, although it would be more accurate to say that the monster had evaded. The metal hissed and rang as the very tip collided with the ground, though the following movements of scuffling across the hard dirt drowned the sound out. The first Kobold leapt into the air and spun its body in a very fast, very precise motion. The dagger it held in its hand was extended and aimed for his throat while the small monster was still spinning, although Takao was quick to back away and distance himself from the weapon. The monster's dagger collided with the metal of Takao's blade and sent sparks in every direction. Takao took a solid step back with his left foot and pushed the monster away, then immediately switched to evading the smaller Kobold's flurry of swipes and stabs. He pulled his blade back just in time to avoid the monster's backlash, the blade just barely sailing past his left eye. The second Kobold was skillfully evaded as well as Takao opted for a more acrobatic approach, he performed a single flip over the Kobold and pushed the hood down over its eyes in the same motion. His glance was fleeting and quickly returned to the battle after memorizing the direction that the monster had run off in. He pulled his head back and stepped away from the dagger that was swiped at his throat and instead pushed his right hand forward, smashing the pommel of his sword into the monster's face and knocking it away. Takao's eyebrow raised as he watched the monster's health bar drop regardless of the method of damage, when he had previously believed that the only way to do so was with the edge of his sword. Perhaps he'd already become jaded to the situation, but he didn't feel as though he had the energy to become frustrated anymore, even after his swing had missed. Every passing moment was another minute that the Dune Rat had to further the distance between Takao and itself, which would make tracking it quite difficult, yet he found himself oddly calm and confident that he'd be able to do it. He followed through with his blade and stepped down hard on his right foot, then pushed with his left to pivot and turn to face the last Kobold that watched in simulated horror as its partner disappeared into hundreds of colourful shards. His jaw twitched slightly as green eyes set upon the last pair of red that kept him from his next attempt at taming a beneficial familiar. He sighed and raised his sword, the last sliver of hope that he could've convinced the program of a monster to flee rather than fight had disappeared without a trace. The two beings exchanged blows, neither of which made any headway in terms of damage as they both missed or were dodged.
