[PP-F10] Wail of the Banshee - Quest

Recommended Posts

Appearing in the portal plaza on the tenth floor of the Aincrad Tower Mack immediately snarled and swore loudly. Apparently, the guidebook wasn't lying. The entire level was subterranean and, since he didn't have nightvision the blonde warrior couldn't see a thing. Waving his hand in front of him, he was pleased to note that he could at least see his menus just fine. Quickly, he scrolled through his list of items before unequipping his deer antler pendant to replace it with the Angelic Lantern. While the gauntlets didn't come with the accuracy bonus that the pendant did, they did at least grant the wearer plus two to the heavy momentum skill. They also generated light in a thirty meter radius around the wearer, allowing the blonde man to see what he was doing as he moved down the stairs and threw back the hood of his white cowl he stood in his own self-generated pool of light and waited for the rest of the party to arrive.

Xion gulped, slightly out of fear when he entered the tenth floor of Aincrad, mainly because it was pitch black, no light, no lamps, no fire. The dark was a deep seated fear of Xion's, so to say the least this was probably his least favourite floor so far. Nevertheless he needed to find Mack, so he drew the slicing Maelstrom, the arcs of electricity coming from it generating great flashes of light, which helped to guide him through the subterranean warrens of floor ten. He searched for a while, eventually finding Mack, with his own little dome of light, generated by his gauntlets. "Bloody hell am I going to hate this quest..." he said, as he walked up to the man, standing next to him.

Tristan wasn't quite sure why he was even here, seeing as he had recently just come out of the Banshee quest with Calrex, where he walked out with Calrex and him at full health and practically unscathed. But, he still felt an obligation to help his fellow players as he promised he would many a month ago, almost bordering a year. The thought that he would be helping players for nearly a year terrified him, even when he took an extended break from questing after the Floor 9 to 10 floor boss, one which took the lives of friends close to him.

Well now there were more tanks, some established such as Calrex or himself and some in the making such as Xion. Which was only a good sign because with more tanks, there will be a more cohesive effort to keep the team alive, not just defeating the monster before them. He walked beside Xion and Mack who were there, waving in his full battle gear and saying "Howdy.".

"Stop your whining," Mack rumbled to Xion as the tank made his way into the circle of light generated by Angelic Lantern. "This place is infinitely better than floors five or nine," the axe-man grumbled, remembering with anything but fond feelings the desert and inferno floors. He had a bad feeling there would be other such poor experiences with floors that were entirely too hot. "At least I'm not going to rust out of my armor on this floor. Just stay in the circle of light, and you'll be fine."

No sooner had the blonde blacksmith finished speaking to his second-in-command than Tristan arrived to join, and complete their party. Mack nodded a polite greeting to the other man, one of the only players in the game that he had yet met whom he could look in the eye without having to look down, and then he began to speak and lay out the plan, trusting that Tristan would change things if needed since he was a more experienced player.

"Alright, we're at a disadvantage up here in the dark, though my gauntlets do generate light so we'll be able to see. The plus side of that is we don't need nightvision, but we're also probably going to get swarmed by mobs like moths to the flame when we get out of the safezone," the blonde man said, beginning the briefing. "Tristan, as the biggest and baddest tank in all Aincrad, from what I hear and what I've seen when we tackled Cerberus, I want you to take point. Xion, bring up the rear and you're the secondary tank. I'll fill in the middle of the formation and attack with impunity since I doubt anything's going to hit me during this operation. According to the Guidebook we need to search out the Banshee's Lair in a rundown jail to the northeast of here. If there are no questions, let's move out, Tristan you're on point."

Tristan nodded to the plan Mack gave, which seemed very sensible in its own right. He assumed this man was a damage dealer then to take the role of the glass cannon in the party, but he would just have to see. Either way, it was true that he could easily grab all of the attention in the fight, having the skills Howl and Fighting Spirit, which meant grabbing attention for him was a piece of cake. He smiled, thinking how this should be of no trouble at all and walked forward to where he recollected the Banshee was from his last fight. "It should be noted we want to lock down the Banshee itself as much as possible, since they can paralyse us which will leave all of us vulnerable. We want to probably avoid such circumstances, so status dealing weapons may be preferential over damage dealing ones.".

Xion was about to say something in response to Mack, but the  Tristan arrived, greeting them with a simple 'Howdy'. "Hey Tristan" Xion said, before mack went into a mission briefing of sorts, Tristan was to be the main tank, Xion was to be the secondary tank if needed and Mack was to take the damage dealing role. "Well I have the Slicing Maelstrom, which can Paralyse on crits, but nothing else" he said, as the tank talked about Para locking the banshee, which was a more than slightly broken tactic, but in a death game anything goes.

"I'm afraid I don't have a weapon to help with the paralock," Mack said, falling into step behind Tristan as he set off to lead them towards the dungeon. "But, no amount of damage mitigation can save the beast from my ability to damage it," the blonde axe-man continued, still following Tristan as he led them in the general direction of where the dungeon was supposed to be located. For the next few hours, the party passed the time mostly in silent walking as, despite Mack's fears concerning the use of a light generating pair of gauntlets, none of the mobs tried to attack the group. Mack attributed this, in no small part, to the presence of Tristan and began to wonder if the mobs had some kind of built in self-preservation protocol. Of course, it was also quite possible that the Sword Art Online game engine was just sporting mad respect for a group of players with enough chutzpah to wander around such a dangerous area while blatantly broadcasting for all to see exactly where they were.

As they neared the area where the entrance was supposed to be found an old woman came hobbling up to the group. She was obviously in some kind of distress and she was ranting about how a banshee had killed her husband and that the entrance to the banshee's lair was just about a hundred meters straight ahead of them. She promised them a vast reward of col, ten thousand, if they would go an eliminate the creature for her.

"This must be the place, shall we," Mack asked, gesturing with a hand to indicate that Tristan should continue to lead the way into the dungeon.

Tristan immediately recognised the scene, having been here all before. The winding caves, the dark illumination, it was all there. Luckily though they the light from Mack to see where they tread while wandering, until they met the (to him) all too familiar deceitful woman offering a reward. "Sort of." he said grimly, "We first have to deal with the fiends lackeys. After they are dealt with, then we can challenge the banshee.". He decided to mention that it was in the fact the old woman another time, seeing as right now the had in fact the aforementioned minions appear to deal with. And they did not seem happy. "Well, let's deal with these folks and get to it without dilly-dallying.".
True to his word, Tristan cast <<Howl>>, an almost dragon-like booming roar coming from Tristans mouth. It may have not dealt damage through the decibel level, plausable as that might have been, but it did get the complete attention of the enemies before them. "Alright, go ham.".

Xion 's eyes widened as a literal horde of enemies was upon them in seconds, 6 enemies in total "Crap..." he cursed, before hearing the deafening <<Howl>> that Tristan had unleashed. The sound hurt his ears a little, but it didn't bother him, as he drew his sword, laying his eyes upon the point Zombie. Xion grinned as he ran around Tristan and towards said zombie, dodging a weak attempt at an attack as he did before thrusting his blade into the creature's abdomen, it's HP lowering a little before electricity arced and surged from the Slicing Maelstrom. paralysing the enemy as it fell to the ground, unable to fight.

"First time crit..." he said with a grin as he backed off once more, waiting for Mack to follow up.

As Tristan wound up to unleash a howl to draw the attention of the undead zombies Mack rolled his head around on his neck which produced an audible popping noise. As the ginger headed tank roared the axe-man laced all of his fingers together and cracked his knuckles before wrapping his hands around the haft of his axe. Six guardian zombies didn't sound, or look, all that difficult to defeat. Taking note of the enemy that Xion had attacked, and paralyzed, Mack took his turn and went after the downed zombie. The bladed head of Guillotine knifed through the air and, naturally, Mack managed to miss the paralyzed enemy.

Tristan wasted no time to begin his attack, running forward between the two and stabbing an enemy which was not paralysed to continue the paralysis on a different monster, also slashing open a large wound on the zombie which made it bleed. It seemed somewhat illogical for a zombie to bleed like this, but he wasn't about to fret on it because videogame logic. After the piercing attack by his spear, the entire gang of zombies attacked him and struck him with attacks that would hit, but his shield deflected all the hits like they were nothing, knocking the monsters back. "Well this fight seems to be going along fine.".

Xion nodded in agreement "They're relatively squishy so our damage output should be more than enough" he said before running out from behind the tank and heading for the first zombie again. The tank ran into their ranks, the lead zombie still suffering from paralysis, laying on the floor. Once he had reached the crippled undead Xion raised his blade before plunging it onto the creature's chest, dealing a nice chunk of damage before falling back behind Tristan once more. "That's one near the yellow zone..." he said as he studied the health bars of the creatures, all bar two where at 100%.

With an angry snarl, Mack raised Guillotine above his head after having struck sparks from the floor of the dungeon when he missed his strike. The zombie, paralyzed until mere seconds ago. As the beast was beginning to raise itself from the ground once more the axe-man swung his blade laterally across his body and blasted the offending zombie in the chest with the weapon. The sheer force of the impact knocked the monster off of its feet and onto the flat of its back, abruptly freeing the bladed head of the weapon from the monster as it began to clambor back to its feet with its health bar having dropped into the red. Readying Guillotine once more, the blonde man immediately began looking for his next target. With two high level tanks with him, he had no worries about drawing aggro.

Already it seems doing rather splendidly with one of the mobs close to death, Tristan smiled to the seeming steamroller force of Mack against the mob. It also brought the monster down to incredibly low HP, which was rather good for this scenario. He himself wanted to go in for an attack, but all of the zombies came at him with tremendous impact, narrowly close to actually hitting them so having to deflect all their attacks. This meant he had no actual time to attack since he was busy blocking, but at least this meant is fellow party members were not being gouged out by the hordes of zombies, so at least he was fulfilling his role as a tank.

Xion watched as they quickly took one of the zombies down to a sliver of health, the creatures putting up very little resistance despite the constant attacks from the players. For a  horde of enemies, they were weak. But the tank knew that he shouldn't get too comfy, everything could change very easily. "I'm assuming that you guys won't mind finishing off the first one" he said before focusing on their secondary target. Xion ran towards the undead, bashing it with his shield before embedding his blade into it's chest, electricity flowing into it's body, making it fall to the floor, helpless to defend itself.

"On it," Mack replied, stepping right into the midst of the zombies. After all, why not? They were totally focused on Tristan for the moment and the red-haired swordsman was in no danger, whatsoever, of being overcome by the mobs. With his hands wrapped firmly around the haft of Guillotine, Mack drew the axe back and swung it across his body in the direction of the zombie with the health bar that was already in the red. Just as the bearded head of the axe was about to slam into the undead cretaure it lunged forward to launch a strike at Tristan. The combination of the wide arcing swing of Guillotine and the lunge of the zombie as it swung its own attack at Tristan, caused both of the attacks to miss their targets by a wide margin.

Tristan had the zombies overwhelm him much like before, doing attacks that came incredibly close to hitting him, hitting all except the most evasive of players. However he blocked all the attacks like they were nothing and continued on, pushing them all back with his shield. He then stabbed one of the zombies with his spear, a nigh killing blow. "Leave that one to bleed out and go for another." he said, since he didnt his team wasting attacks on dead opponents. Well, they were technically dead already, but Tristan was not about to argue semantics to himself while there was a horde of killer zombies.

Mack nodded his understanding of Tristan’s orders to the man that was tanking for them. He quite agreed with the ginger haired warrior that there was no point in wasting attacks on an enemy that would be dead soon as a result of a status effect anyway. It was inefficient and wasteful. Tightening his hands around the leather wrapped mahogany haft of Guillotine, Mack moved back into the fray. Reversing his grip on the axe, he swung the iron butt cap of the weapon into the head of the other zombie that was already in the red zone on its health. There was a rather sickening dull wet thwack as the blow drove home and an instant later the zombie shattered into pixels as a result of the attack. “Two down, four to go! Keep moving!”

Tristan smiled as another went down, meaning this fight would take less time. Tristan charged forward with his spear to attack one of the zombies, but the zombie sidestepped him, leaving Tristan open for attack. Luckily all their aim was appalling too, meaning that he wasn't hit either and was totally safe from harm. It appeared to be Tristan was wrong about this fight taking less time, as from the looks of it it will actually take more. He sighed as he readied his spear and shield for the next attack.

Xion watched as they managed to kill another of the zombies, slowly whittling down their number. "This is taking too long..." he huffed before moving in for a quick attack on one of the remaining Zombies, but he missed as the undead somehow managed to dodge it, shambling out of the way, presumably through sheer luck. "Bloody" Xion said before uttering a few stronger curses.
