[SP - F12] Scouting for 12th Floor [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

A few hours had passed since their successful clearing of the eleventh floor's Boss. In the wake of his defeat, the vanguard lead the way to the newest floor, numbered twelve. The warp gate brought them to a new settlement, which quickly became known as "Lazaro" from the speakings of the floor's artificial inhabitants. Takao suspected plenty of other players were already setting out to find the boss room, and he was no different. Their progress relied on a number of factors, and players taking the initiative when it came to scouting was the first to be taken into account. It was risky, exploring a new floor like this without the aid of others to pull him out of any sticky situations, but he didn't feel the need to bother anybody with a request of temporary companionship. Instead, he set out alone, after having a very small drink to provide him with a nice buff to his damage.

"Otoko won't mind if I'm out a bit longer," said Takao, speaking aloud to nobody else but himself. "He probably won't mind tearing up my shop for a while either." A lengthy sigh escaped from his lungs as he stepped along the raised wooden platform that just one of many similar houses sat upon. A gondola-like vessel sat on the end, with a man standing in the back. From the cursor that floated above his head, he quickly recognized it as an NPC.

The two exchanged some generic dialogue, which ended with Takao boarding the watercraft and being lead toward the nearest bit of what he could only assume was "dry" land, though he had his doubts given the theme of the floor.

Takao disembarked from the watercraft and bowed his head in thanks to the NPC who had ferried him to the mainland. His green eyes set upon the landscape before him - a swamp. He hadn't been expecting anything less. It looked just like any other that he'd seen before, and although he was far from being the leading expert on such terrain, it went without saying that the geography was very swampy indeed. Dry land was scarce, and the environment was littered with tall trees with a thick canopy that blocked out most light. Small beams pierced through the rare gap in foliage, and the varying clearings provided points of reference. The brunet swung his hand up and gestured downward to open his menu, and navigated to the field map. As he'd been expecting, it was totally empty, save for what little he'd revealed by stepping foot into the wilderness. "Well... Alright then. Let's get started."

With his sword drawn, Takao trudged through the knee-high swampy waters. It was difficult to listen for sounds that might alert him to the presence of a monster lurking nearby when every sound seemed to do just that. Perhaps he was just a paranoid person, but beyond the sounds of his legs pushing the water aside as gently as possible, every little sound made his head turn. The brunet's eyes set forward again and narrowed upon noticing movement that was unlike what he'd been seeing so far. The waters in front of him were shifting in several different places, as if something was traveling just below the surface. Evidently, this was the case, as a pair of jaws leapt from the water and snapped at him. He was quick to evade it by shifting to the side, through the waters made it difficult. "Whoa! Holy crap, what the-" was all he managed to get out before two more similarly styled monsters repeated the failed attempts as the first. They were evaded as well, prompting Takao into action. He pulled his sword arm back and poised it, readying himself for the usage of a sword art. "Alright, electricity plus water is bad..." he muttered to himself, and found his eyes set on a tree. "But tree plus electricity multiplied by water is good! -...P..probably, I think." The system was given control of his avatar, and the glowing blue blade lead him through a simple aerial maneuver. His boots hit the trunk of the tree, and his blade soon followed, sending sparks of electricity down the tree and into the water. The swamp did as he'd been expecting it to, and electrified all the nearby monsters in one fell swoop.

Takao wasn't given much time to recover after falling from his temporarily advantageous position on the side of the tree. The splash his body caused upon falling in seemed to call even more attention to his position, which was an unfortunate situation to find himself in, but not unrecoverable. Takao stood as soon as he could and noticed the wakes again. He wouldn't give them the opportunity to attack first this time, and prepared to repeat his prior success, but a little different this time around. Takao held his sword to the side and slightly behind him, preparing the sword art which hued his sword blue. His legs tensed under the system's guidance, and he leapt into the air. This time, however, he aimed his sword directly for the water. He thrust the point into the murky depths, resulting in electricity flying in every direction. The amplification didn't seem similar to his last attempt for one reason or another, but the results were ultimately the same. Four different sources of colourful data fragments rose from the water and disappeared into oblivion, and Takao returned to the ground with a splash. "Huh. Eight down already. This place could be good to grind in too."

Takao could feel his energy stores depleted from the continuous usage of a moderately high-powered sword art, and one that affected an entire area at that. He trudged his way through the swamp and found a bit of dry land, if the sizable yet water-logged lump of grass and mud could be considered as such.He glanced down at his clothes, which were wet from his earlier fall, and exhaled. "At least it doesn't feel like real water," he muttered. "Plus it's warm, so it's not... that uncomfortable, I guess." With his position on the mound of grass, he had a clear vantage point in every direction. Nothing would be sneaking up on him, if he could help it!

With no current use for his blade other than reassurance of safety, Takao swung the sword up and slid it across his shoulder. The end caught the mouth of his scabbard and he slowly slid it back inside, until a click sounded as the cross guard stopped its descent. The practiced maneuver had become second nature to him by now, and despite the usually disadvantageous positioning of his sword on his back, he found its placement to be completely fine; not debilitating in the slightest. It even made him feel a bit cool, to be able to draw his sword out like a character from some kind of action movie.

It wasn't long before he felt his energy replenishing itself. It was an interesting system to get used to, he found. It felt like legitimate fatigue when he became tired, but his energy came back in a way he could only describe as a stamina gauge refilling itself. It was definitely far from a natural feeling, though he found his getting used to not experiencing pain to be similar. He could only begin to imagine the effects that would have on his psyche in the real world. His green eyes fell to his menu as it opened, and he glanced again at the map. His progress was going slow and only a minimal portion of the floor had been revealed to him as a result of his escapades thus far, but it was steady progress. "Back into action then." he said as he closed the menu.

His sword was drawn only moments after being returned to its scabbard. He didn't mind the inconvenience, since he enjoyed the feeling of pulling the blade free and slicing through the air - a movement done solely for his own entertainment. Before long Takao found himself being followed by the rippling trails of water that he'd noticed before. The alligator-like monsters' attack patterns were already being memorized - at least, if they even managed to get an attack off. His boot-clad feet shifted beneath the knee-high water and his body turned suddenly. His blade was positioned in a sword art ready position, resulting in the metal adopting a blue hue. He launched himself into the air by kicking off the ground, and thrust his blade point first into the water. Electricity rippled from the blade into the murky depths, electrocuting all four of the monsters with ease. Takao made sure to keep as much of his body out of the water via balancing atop the sword's pommel for as long as he could, which didn't prove to be very long. He landed with a splash again, and exhaled a sigh.

It wasn't long after the last four were dispatched that four more took their place. The unexplored floor was positively littered with the generic swamp themed monsters, undoubtedly due to being untouched by the hands of players. He watched carefully for the same signs - the top of a head peering from beneath the murky waters, or wakes and ripples as they swamp closer. Per the usual, he wasn't given much time to himself before they were converging upon him yet again. However, upon attempting to take up a stance and prepare a sword art, a slight current in the water took his balance from him. He slipped upon the slick muddy bed beneath the water and found himself in the water, with the monsters unsuccessfully lunging at where he'd been just seconds prior.

Takao struggled back up to his feet and coughed out some of the water that had unintentionally entered his mouth. The taste was definitely unpleasant, and describable only with the same word that could describe the floor in its entirety - swampy. He burst from the water's surface and immediately took to a sword art ready position as soon as his balance recovered. With a glowing blue sword in hand, Takao kicked off the ground and out of the water. The momentum of his legs were swung over his head, thus performing an entirely unnecessary flip that the system guided him through, and landed sword-point first in the water. He balanced on the pommel for a moment as electricity quickly rippled out and electrocuted the nearby monsters, reducing their health gauges to zero in a single movement.

With his energy depleted from the brief encounters yet again, Takao found himself searching for another safe place to recover from his fatigue. He located a rather large fallen tree that seemed hollow most of the way through and hopped up onto the side, slowly climbing up the bark until he found himself at a safe location. It wasn't an ideal spot to have a sit, but it would do. He slammed his sword into the water-logged bark and examined his surroundings briefly before turning his attention back down to his menu. He navigated through the options until a map appeared, displaying his progress thus far.

The log provided an interesting vantage point atop the swampy waters. Oddly enough, he didn't see any of the alligators- or was it crocodiles? He always got the two confused. Nonetheless, he didn't see any of the reptilian monsters lurking about in the waters below, which was odd indeed. Perhaps the area had already been hunting clean, though that was incredibly unlikely. The more likely scenario was that he was blessed with a moment of peace, to recollect both his thoughts and regain the energy lost from his earlier battles. "Well, at the very least, I'm still getting materials from all this."

Takao slowly rose to stand after feeling his energy return in force. He stretched his arms out to the sides and upward toward the blocked out sky, and glanced down the fallen tree he'd used as a vantage point while resting. The water below was still, undisturbed, yet he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. He knew better than to dismiss it as his nerves, given how he'd been ambushed a total of four times thus far, and he expected that number to rise astronomically the further into the floor he ventured.

The brunet pulled his sword from the bark and slid down the fallen tree. He landed with a thud and a splash as his boots collided with the water, undoubtedly disturbing any resting monsters in the immediate area. But, with sword in hand, he felt himself to be prepared regardless. He trudged through the swampy landscapes for less than five minutes and caught movement out of the corner of his eye. Takao's head whipped to the side and noticed four more lines of ripples atop the water's surface - there was always only four, for some reason - and smiled. "Alright, show time!" he said while slipping into a position. His blade began to glow blue with the sword art he'd become oh so fond of, and after being guided through the needless acrobatics that accompanied the sword art's damage, he thrust his blade point end first into the water. Electricity rippled from the steel and electrocuted the incoming monsters before they even got close, sparing him the need to evade them.

"W..what in the..." Takao's words were lined with a mixture of disbelief and utter confusion. The beasts before him were deer, and there was heavy emphasis on the word "were". They appeared to be zombified, their ribcage was exposed and several other parts of their bodies were missing some vital components. Like skin. He grimaced and shook his head, reminding himself that they were just monsters. Their red eyes began to glow after spotting him as he moved within range, prompting him to take up a specific posture as they spurred into action. They began their charge, effortlessly sloshing through the murky water on their way toward him. Yet by the time any of them would've gotten anywhere near to where he had been standing, Takao was already in the air. He slammed his sword point down into the water and electrocuted the four, reducing their health just as easily as the crocodiles. ...Alligators. Whichever.

A heavy breath left Takao's chest following the defeat of the four zombified deer monsters, expressing both his fatigue from the battle as well as his relief that it was over. Emerald hued eyes scanned his surroundings and found things to be quiet. ...quiet? It was much too quiet, he had been hearing noises constantly since delving into the swampy wilderness. Even while he was sat atop the fallen tree did he hear the ambiance of the swamp - the sounds of the water moving, the sounds of the trees rustling in the breeze, even frogs croaking and crickets... cricketing? Something was definitely off, and to quell his worries, he decided to eat a haunch of meat.

"So if this is Lazaro, then I'm about... seven... eight... Huh, almost exactly a kilometer out." said Takao as he muttered aloud to himself. He'd found another fallen tree to sit upon, and although it wasn't as sizable as the last, it provided him with the much desired shelter from the water that he'd been looking for. His eyes were glued to the transparent map that hovered in front of him, opened via the interactive interface. The map was largely unexplored, if he were to go by all the black space that occupied the majority of the screen. The revealed portion was displayed as a mostly straight line, leaning further toward the east where the largest portion of black space was. "I guess it's most likely to be around there... But I've been wrong before, so..."

"No use in wasting time sittin' around here then!" Takao leapt up to his feet after swiping the menu away. He had his direction, and a quick glance at the HUD's clock that hovered near the bottom right portion of his peripheral vision told him that he'd been at it for nearly an hour and a half. "Well, that's not so bad. I'll look around for another hour and head home for some lunch. Otoko's probably starvin'." he said as he jumped down from the log and returned to the knee-high water. The end of his sentence was laced with sarcasm - he knew fully well that the monster was more than capable of finding its own food in the building, mostly because he'd left the operation of the restaurant to the little red monster in his absence.

A large grey tower stood before Takao, who had stumbled upon it only seconds prior. It sat in the middle of a small clearing, and seemed to stretch endlessly toward the sky. A low whistle escaped from his throat amidst a breath as his eyes trailed the rough looking surface. "Well... That's it alright."

His emerald eyes were immediately alerted to movement on the left, but before he could react, the pointed end of a skull-shaped scythe embedded itself in his left shoulder. He hissed out a breath in surprise and snapped his head toward the source, and was greeted with the sight of a beast that stood about four heads taller than himself. It had smooth green skin and portions of armour made from darker green scales. The eyes were large and round, with a thin yellow iris and large black pupil that began to glow red as soon as he looked into them. He glanced up at his health gauge and grunted, watching it drop slowly. Takao reacted quickly and raised his leg to slam into the monster's stomach, pushing it away and removing the weapon from his shoulder. He jumped back and prepared a sword art immediately afterward, and activated his charge skill in the same go. The end result was a powerful nine-hit combination, the damage of which augmented with a few well-placed strikes as well as the buff that remained active on his avatar.

"Haha!" Takao laughed as he pointed at the monster, which had been stunned by the concussive hilt blow that concluded his previous sword skill. "That's what ya' get for sneakin' up on me, y'know." he said as he felt the post-motion rigidity wearing off faster than the monster's stunned state. He pulled the sword back again after taking a quick glance at the health gauge. If it had mitigation at all, it was absolutely minimal, yet he still only knocked off a bit more than half of the monster's health with his first strike. He prepared a sword art of similar damage capability and unleashed it on the monster, covering its green skin in large wounds as a result of the flurry of nine slashes that diminished the remainder of its health.

The monster froze in blade as its gauge emptied of colour, and burst into the colourful fragments he'd come to know and love. So often they'd been the signal of a monster's defeat, and so rarely had they been a player's death. His green eyes trailed over to the large tower again, and a smile worked its way onto his face. "So that's the labrynth then." he said, rolling a shrug across his shoulders. "Let's go have a look."
