night blinked, pausing partway through in consuming one of her dumplings. "i don't think so," she returned, briefly puzzled. "when we was there, i'm pretty sure we were still aware of the threat of death looming over us. whatever gave you that impression?" she took a bite anyway thereafter, giving herself space to think. "if there was a place with that sort of safety lock, we should've all heard about it by now, shouldn't we?"
she kept quiet during koga's dish, only chuckling as he revealed his regret, finishing the bite she kept on hand. given his track record for having people close to him, what else could she do but feel as though one of her closest friends deserved some form of happiness, especially related to his love life? but hearing that she did interact with the woman in question surprised night to no end. "no way."
"At the trainwreck of a Christmas party I hosted a couple years back. Red head, showed up late, after the whole flooding thing. Don't think you guys interacted much though."
"a couple of years?" now it was night's turn to groan. her memory wasn't exactly the best to check facts against. no way she would've remembered some random redhead, especially if she hadn't been anything to night's own tastes. despite her guilt, she shook her head. "what even happened at that party? with the whole, er, flooding thing...? i think i headed outside with someone else just to pet a cat or something. then... i don't know, maybe i left? it's been too long ever since..."
she hummed to fill the gap in their conversation between, a hand on her chin, the other arm wrapped across herself. then the true meet-cute nugget was dropped; night nodded first with confusion, because she didn't exactly remember what the fourteenth entailed quick enough.
"oh. ... no way, again." the player dropped her guard in surprise. "out of all the floors, it had to be the gloomiest, reddest one? you know what they say about scarlet letters, right?" it took her a beat before she retracted what she'd said with a, "-- just kidding."
"still though, with the undead around..."
"Other than you, she's the only person I've ever met who legitimately scares me,"
"huh?" was night supposed to stiffen? koga had laughed, goddammit. "what was that supposed to mean?"
it turned out to be his comment on her strength, but the player in question still didn't jog her memory. how odd. night strained to conjure a familiar face or image still. "if this is someone just as strong, shouldn't i be able to identify her by now...? what, no name?" night huffed, folding her arms. "at least drop me what she used as a weapon."
if the player had sobered from her poor attempt at detective work thereafter, it was to consider koga's past history with women... even though she knew little of it. noctua was a scary-looking individual, she once thought. too refined for night's own tastes, and someone she wasn't entirely sure she could've gotten along with, even up until their last interaction.
"ah... don't tell me you like women who seem to scare you..." night winced momentarily, looking away as she rambled. "is that usual for a guy's tastes? well, if you're not telling me anything, maybe i should consider all the scary people i know, too..."

another jest from night; she'd dropped her guard in receiving lilith then, as she focused on the dancing of the boss' health bar within her periphery. up and down again. night couldn't quite help but figure they were both forgetting something crucial regarding the death of the vampire.
just as the beast was shoved in her direction, night swiveled around lilith's open maw curving into a sharp bite, and cut a gash into its side. a classic move to avoid being front-and-center food for the enemy. she slid away, allowing their target to spin around and face them in a lost frenzy as night bounced over to nari's side.
what was it again? the weapon?
"hey," she started, pointing towards the scythe in her team mate's hand while trying to keep her cool. "i know you haven't been able to hit her. but also, do you think that artefact you're holding is... somehow related to lilith's death or something...? no pressure but..."

she figured the room would've changed the next time she entered it. when night was filtered into that golden hall, however, all that differed from the image in her memory was that it was living, breathing, through the particle effects of the game conveying an illusion of life. still, beyond its little light tricks, the room was completely sterile.
silent, night shuffled up to the statue holding up the horn of battle and took it from its hands. then, she reviewed her inventory, and contemplated on the other items, now unretrievable, amidst her surroundings. step by step, she traced the perimeter of the gathering of statues, ignoring the potential danger and fright that stayed with her, usually, in such a desolate, lonely place.
then, she skipped to the teleporter, haste in her steps betraying her composure. in the quiet, night disappeared with the notes that only bistro would read, consider, and formulate a plan around.

she'd practically been caught, having never intended to be present in the shop during daylight, and yet for a quick spring clean and a check-in on her favourite little familiar, who should've popped in but one of her friends? night hummed over the order received, setting aside payment. to them it wasn't much worth being miserly over. to nyanko it was his new toy (for now).
"in a minute," she told him, disappearing to the backroom with a handful of metal lumps. in that amount of time likewise, the artisan was out, raising a magnifying glass to her craft to inspect her work before handing it to its owner.

night tilted her head, absentminded, maintaining her stance at the ready as lilith scrambled out of her current pitstop. "no way. i wouldn't have wanted my attack to go through you. that 100% wasn't going to hit you -- you move fast. you can dodge out the way."
rather, what night did expect was for koga to be on the ball for breaking down lilith just as she sent the boss hurtling towards him, almost as though chaining a combo. though, given their combat pace, the moment her friend would've wanted to retaliate with his own response, the vampiress had freed herself and immediately darted over to night's position, and the player dropped to roll out of the way. she shimmied back towards koga, adjusting the grip on her blade. "i told you wasn't great at estimating my attacks down to a hair, or something like that. you can believe me now, right?"

night breathed, slow, watching nari chase after lilith and watching the vampiress back off on instinct. was it all in the weapon? given how many times she'd changed her own, she figured she knew better by now. so the constant foiled attempts, night thought, were either an equipment mismatch or...
"--stop."
she, too, chose to dive in once nari had swung to her fill. a scythe wasn't the best weapon for reach, but it did have more than most, to the detriment of its curvature. straight edges weren't the best due to the need for accuracy, but perhaps that was the exact type of precision that her companion lacked in that moment.
so she put her blade to the test. in the same way she came to her epiphany, whole-hearted or otherwise, so too did her promise ring in tone, drawing a holy light from above to smite lilith where it stood. at a pulsing, bleeding red, bar empty save for the last, the boss was brought to its knees.
night stepped back, hesitant. a mixture of annoyance and surprise swelled within. she turned to nari in that moment of rest, holding up two fingers.
"here's how we'll do this. either you strike its weak point to land a critical..." she lowered her middle. "... or i tag it with a stun before you hit it hard afterwards."
