  1. "oh, that was..."

    the calm and politeness set in before night could register its juxtaposition between her earlier anxiety. so the scream was... for nothing? at least, in terms of immediate danger. the player felt as though she should've been a little grateful, though part of her wrestled with the lack of a good meal and a calm morning. being on the first was starting to wear on her...

    she tuned back into their conversation quickly. the new player had meant to work on tutorial quests -- the same deal most other starters did -- and night rustled the back of her hair quickly. it would be incredibly rude to reject them now, especially given how clear the streets were, she was practically the only one available... for the time being.

    so night let out a short exhale, glancing over the equipment of the other, before looking towards the fields of beginnings. with what the newbie had, it wouldn't do well to be out with the boars alone. night repeated this in her head, if only to persuade herself from thinking ill of a stranger so soon.

    the player took a step forward, extending a hand. "no worries," she lied. "what you did worked. better to be safe than sorry in the early levels. i'm night. it's nice to meet you."

    she pointed her thumb over her shoulder once they'd exchanged pleasantries. "by the way, the quest starter was right over there... if you haven't picked it up, i mean. how much of town are you familiar with?"

  2. it would be easy to say that night was already on her way out of town, on another errand when she heard the call. but it was more likely that, in the midst of her morning routine, she'd heard a high-pitched shrill that had her fumble on her cooking.

    "gah, shit!"

    the sizzling oil but splashed out of the pan she had in her grasp, just in time for her double to look up. night shook off the mild pain, stepping back and allowing her duties to be relieved from home. it took no time for her homebody to double down on her leave, however, when she looked over her shoulder, knife placed down on the kitchen counter. "that was a player," was all night received as an explanation, "you might want to look into that."

    "it's the first..." night murmured, voice trailing as she realised the futility in fighting back. leave it to her to know the absurdities of even the safest floor in the game. as the player shifted out the kitchen, her grumbles were in acknowledgement of the new quest. "alright; just eat without me. nyanko can have my bits."

    at his mention, the tiny familiar kitten bounced down from his pedestal, bounding over to the new chef's feet, eager. night closed the door on them, staying only long enough to hear the retort to the feline, "i think you're more spoiled than me sometimes."

    down the streets night went. having a home on the first often meant there was an unspoken duty to tend to the players in the town of beginnings to make sure things were okay. at least, that's what night believed, steadily contemplating the weight of this responsibility and what she lost because of it as she slid across the pavement, towards the road leading out towards the outskirts near the south. when she picked herself up, the player wasn't certain where to look for the mysterious yeller. unusually, the fields were empty, save for boars.

    her head snapped to the closest player nearby, demeanour slightly on edge. "hey. did anything happen out there just now? you heard the scream too, didn't you...?"

  3. according to this copy paste system, the text is automatically justified. why is that? i find that quite strange, and frankly i am worried about my copy paste abilities. i don't know if that's a good thing or not. i will be writing out this extremely long paragraph to see if i feel okay about it. by the way, this program is so nice and lightweight and also it has a really neat word counter. it's also incredibly minimalist. the way i read my text makes me feel happy on this one small program. i wish it could be in more people's hands.

  4. night finally showed to receive the gift. the first was expected, but the second wasn't so. after some hesitance, the player retrieved it from nari's grasp.

  9. night kept the note about old intel in mind. and then, she winced again, as hirru continued, because his recollection was full of surprises. she felt as though she didn't need to have asked further, ever, about why she never heard of what progress the players at the front were making, given what she'd heard. from what she'd heard, it sounded as though they were perpetually locked in confrontations and disarray, breaking up a much needed focus upon a central goal.

    for a heartbeat, she thought back to raidou, and understood his motivations a little better. then, she wondered, too, if those documents would have anything to say about these politics at play. how many players would be still aware of such machinations going on behind the scenes of these high-levelled players? as new individuals joined the front, others would leave, slipping into darkness or out of history's eye; and she was uncertain if there were any others whose tale went back further than hirru's, now.

    hirru spoke of the infighting, due to supremacy, and disgust sat on the base of her tongue. another name familiar, ariel, and night kept her in mind; then came teyre's confrontation with hirru, alongside macradon's sudden involvement with the hassle. a part of her wondered if they were all just little kids at the playground, with much more destructive fights and better looking gear. it'd certainly seemed like it, though she wondered to what end they were waging wars upon.

    night considered the intel briefly. she never realized how much macradon nor ariel had those sides to them; to 'keep in line' and 'know of one's place'. it was the type of behaviour that she was only incidentally familiar with at the time yuki and herself appeared at the meeting leading up to shadow, and figured it was to happen once, rather than consistently.

    the use of the word newb, too, was choice; because the way hirru's management had sounded, his efforts had been effective, especially with regards to his watch over opal. it was puzzling to recognize how many players with body counts had been active at the time of his arrival. and, having drawn teyre's attention afterwards, night was surprise to hear the player as the hero of hirru's story, rather than the others; because she wasn't around any more. the disrupter to fade out from limelight, and the others to stay on.

    what kept players around long enough, as much as they did, to stand against a floor boss? night considered, calm, thoughts straying to wonder if, despite the act, the kills were for the greater good. or, even briefly, if the problem with the unity of players laid within those with green crystals instead, given the trouble that herself and others (hirru included) had faced. but the player knew that train of thought was a fallacy, so she set it aside, the image of her friend sharpening in her gaze from the blurred, twinkling mirage out into the garden.

    "sis, huh..."

    there was a consistent factor about most orange crystals, night believed. for them to want to move on past the reputation they'd garnered for having committed one of the gravest sins known to man – to move on from being a killer. and night wondered if, if there was a stigma that existed, who it was reinforced further by more – the shared past of their hierarchical players, or cardinal's forced rules itself.

    "then i assume you two must've been close, past that," night said. "if you're close enough to have called teyre that, i mean. or is this traditionally a sibling thing...?" the player looked away briefly, humming, before acknowledging hirru again. "well, beyond that; would you say your experience as raid leader paid off a little? though, it's not like i'm familiar with most others to potentially be calling the shots. as far as i'm aware, that responsibility mostly lies on baldur's shoulders now, doesn't it?"

    quietly, in her mind, she asked curiously too, if he were to play a role in the story soon.

  10. night caught a glimpse of alkor's falter, and ultimately decided on consistency above all else. wushen's heave was nothing more than its dying breath in the long run, with the rate they'd been pummeling down each minor obstacle that had stood in their way. despite how annoying the ice walls were, by the time they got to strike the dragon overlord once more, she was sure they would've whittled away at its health, too.

    with a single swipe, she cut down their temporary bane. wasn't certain if it was poison, or disgust that had gotten to her bulwark, but night decided to place a hand on his shoulder. "hang back for a moment if you need it," was what she said, pulling alkor to a distance safer, closer to the ice wall than they were before. then, she placed a hand upon the barrier's cold confines once more, the irritant, and knew their duties had to end soon, before they ran out of stamina to continue on.

  11. a harmonious triad. night retrieved the horn from its stand, before gazing up at the statue that held it. immaculate, featureless, untouchable. would they ever represent someone important that they would come to know; or were they ever meant to, rather than propose an ideal? she thought twice, hand around the item, if she wanted or dared to know. but a spin on her heel and quick strides towards the exit said all.

    she let out a huff against the back of her wrist, a warm breath to break the chill of being in that estranged, isolated room. night felt the gaze of something foreign, from the fading stone without eyes, no sights, and she was certain of her decision to leave. with two quick steps onto the teleporting pad, her eyes to the floor, she waited until the light consumed her before she decided to look back one last time.

  12. like being passed a ball. night was somewhat ready for the pass, despite being adequately comfortable with standing still, eyes on the real villain. when lilith swung over towards her, oathkeeper was drawn, a wide slash towards where the vampiress' back would be –

    – or would've been, if it wasn't followed up immediately with another jump elsewhere, in tandem with the way nari had been pushing herself earlier to wait for lilith to make a mistake. night soured, before following through on her initial whiff – a dive made with rage and a scowl towards their target, with a final horizontal slash, yet she caught nothing but the laugh of the demon. lilith flitted away, toying with them – but at least she was pirouetting towards nari, with little room left in their arena to run towards.

    "well, i don't think she got the message," night snapped, running in close for a pincer, in case lilith was liken to get away once again.

  14. here, at the very damn least, did night finally manage to strike. because it wasn't intangible -- how did her party even get the previous two heads, anyway? -- and given her time striking at wood elementals on the twenty-seventh, from the dungeon with hirru to the labyrinth, night was _certain_ she would have home field advantage.

    jack's executioner only agreed in tandem with incited bloodshed.

    blight seemed ineffective, with the way that often dark sludge that poured out of her sword swayed to a different hue. from red, the liquid spilled but seeped into the gash, tinged in a myriad of colours before fading into a murky grey. night dropped into a tumble as she recovered from wushen's usual combo of 'ice wall, uppercut someone, spawn head' routine, picking herself up quick if only to take note of the damage they'd done to wushen's minion.

    its health was in the red. they were nearly there; just not enough yet.

  15. when she came to, the battlefield had changed already. almost as though the ice wall, the head of fire and the humiliation had been a fever dream. it obviously wasn't – her sights did graze over koga and crow reeling from their expended energy, just as the last of the wall shattered into pieces and simmered in midair as a flurry of crystal particles. so night had to recalculate her next steps.

    she did it at her own leisurely pace.

    the only cue she did have was from zandra breaking away from the party, and night figured she should follow suit. nothing to the flailing head still active; if it needed a cover up, like a terrible pimple, the player couldn't do anything about it. night placed a hand over her eyes as she shuffled up to wushen – wanting to break out into a sprint, but the exhaustion got the best of her – and set down a strike, almost poorly placed.

    was she concussed from the fall before? it felt like it. she needed to get her head back in the game – and fast.

  16. night's eyes flicked over to nari for a moment, questioning her companion's words. even if they both wanted the memories to return, her mind simply stood still on what was to happen; like trying to place a word on the tip of your tongue. with a huff, the player evaded another oncoming swipe. "why, jealous?"

    she hadn't meant it, and the part of her focused on the fight was definitely taken aback once nari's strike had stopped lilith in place. in mid-swing, her counter attack failed, the energy fading from her sword art as it fizzled out from her reeled blade.

    "... never mind."

    oathkeeper's tip was punched through the floor, night leaning upon it and gesturing to the vampire instead. though, her sights were turned to the man still in the room, as her expression morphed into a deeper scowl. "do you think the sword would kill her in one shot, or not? would be mighty convenient if it did, don't you think?"

  17. their numbers were dwindling once nari had cut down the lesser vampire with a clean swipe. "i had no idea either," night announced, as she waited for an opening from lilith, scraping the bottom of her memory for some tidbit about how she used to have fought this boss -- but nothing came. surely, certainly she had done so before, right? 

    a small, short, "strange," was uttered under her breath, just before lilith's offense was upon the player, and she'd dodged out of the way of it. the clatter of claws against faux-steel was earpiercing, night slipping by the vampire, but she retaliated against their foe at the tail end of her weave, a slick swerve tracing out a gash leading to an uppercut from the back of the boss. night huffed, pushing herself away from immediate danger as she caught lilith's eye, their opponent whirling around to track the veteran of the players.

    she didn't like the piercing glare from lilith herself, so she raised her sword up in an odd defensive stand, shielding her appearance from the demon in question. "i just thought i would've remembered an encounter like this is all," night confessed. "boils the blood a little, maybe, to have to fight pretty looking creatures, you know? ... and not just humanoids, i mean."

  21. yuki's theory did seem sound. night ruminated on the answer as she watched the lost souls bounce around, trying to reach for the players as they side-stepped their aimless attacks. a finger went up to scratch at her cheek as she waved to her shield, walking further down the corridor past the dying figures. "maybe. but the only place i do recall an orc – er, i think? – was back on the twenty third. ...maybe? come to think of it, i don't even know if orcs are all that common in aincrad... i think maybe beastmen are but only in specific areas, cordoned off in their own little tribes..."

    there wasn't a point in striking the zombies, now. given time, their forms would deteriorate based off the marks the duo had left upon them. so night went back to searching, making sure yuki was firmly by her side this time – she was going to make sure her friend wouldn't get lost in the maze again, this time.

    "oh, right." night gestured to yuki's weapon, knowing well she usually didn't use arms. "how're you finding it? having to hit things. it's a bit of a pain having to be accurate, but common mobs are easier pickings, i feel. and if you've been stuck here for so long, you must've gotten used to using it by now, right?"
