    incredibly prepared. more so than she really did remember herself ever having been. how'd she end up in the tanking role beside yuki, anyway? didn't she jot herself down as a damage-dealer?

    -- no matter.

    iris found her a pair of new shoes for the fight. it fit her well after a few modifications, and that was enough. anything else she needed was already available for her own use. it wasn't as though she hadn't taken a rough hit before, and neither was she afraid to do so if she was doing it right by her shield.

    any damage yuki could take, night figured, she could match it in turn through the power of friendship (joke) and sheer will.

    night had arrived underdressed for the occasion. tracksuit tied at her waist, she fumbled with the vanity mask that she'd brought from home when she realized it wasn't working so well. neither did her senses at the scent of rot. while there was still time for everyone else to show up, she donned what layers she could against the elements, before laying out the spread on a folding table she was advised to bring.

  5. "we have hockey in aincrad?"

    now night was half joking. she followed star through the crowd, and was surprised at the lack of an answer at the door knock. why was it unlocked though? star let himself in. she simply tagged along.

    and then the begging began.

    she raised a brow, turning to star. "yeah," she said, "that sounds about right for a quest npc, don't you think?" so, with a shrug, she turned to tiberius. "sure. point us towards it -- which way's the cave in?"

    they left as soon as they got their directions. further into dagan territory, past the city was a region more mountainous, where a number of tunnel entrances could be found. on foot, they walked, because night wasn't sure about the logistics of bringing their horses along. they got to the site of the incident, even as lost as they seemed to be, because there was already a gathering of townsfolk present to indicate that was where they were meant to go.

    "it'll be dark down there," night said, rummaging through her inventory. if she was being honest, she had completely forgotten to come prepared since the last she'd visited the caves. the player peered into the darkness, and forgot she didn't have night vision active -- nor searching. so night cursed instead, hating how she was blinded by the dark. she turned to star with a fold of her arms.

    "the best i can do is sneak in and be quiet, lest another cave in occurs. they'd be put in more peril. what've you got on hand?"

  6. "no way."

    she'd huffed, watching koga's actually-decent-blade light up once he'd been able to catch lilith in a counter. the man had slid around the monster just to keep her within range. night cleared the leap past koga and onto their target --- this time calling her sword to chime out against it. with another set of sparks, and a douse of bright light that struck the horror down in a pillar, night skipped to the floor with a few hops, watching their enemy stumble and groan.

    their conversation -- she didn't forget it. the games, however, she might've. and as her brain churned to pull out the titles from her poor memory, she shuffled around the battleground, just to keep herself on her toes for when lilith would lash out again.

    in another time, she would've remarked that anno was a title that seemed to fit koga. for now...

    "no, no -- metro's cool, but i haven't played it. no horror games." she quirked a brow at the mention of the third title, however, discarding the last. "haven's a game i haven't heard of in a while. isn't that the one you could play as a couple? how'd that go? ... they never let you customize your characters beyond a gender update, did they...?"

  7. "oh," night laughed, voice wavering. "you weren't that bad back then, yuki."

    but no sooner past her words being said did yuki close the gap between them, all for their one embrace. and night shivered out of shock for that sudden hug. still, she leaned into it, holding her friend just as tight as she felt herself being held. it was strange to hear her full name after so long -- even stranger still, for ren to see someone she'd imagine was a ghost in spirit, and feel them near sobbing into her. ren fought to swallow her worries, ever as she did long before.

    ren to struggle to breathe. they were best friends, weren't they? separated for so long that night thought she would be solo once again, and learned to live with that fact. struggled to fill the spot that yuki once did. might've nearly gotten herself killed for it. fuck -- it was all that and more that she realized she hadn't told yuki that made her solid defense come crumbling apart, too. if ren had nails, she would've dug them into yuki and bore with the thorns that struck back deep within her.

    "it's okay," ren found herself saying, sobs breaking through her fighting spirit. "it's okay, yuki. as long as you're safe, and that i know you're safe, and that you're back here. i..." and she drew a heavy breath. "will always be here waiting for you -- i'm patient, you know? i've gotten stronger in the time you were away, too. you can rest easy -- stuck in here, we've got all the time in the world."

    "i... i'm here," she swore, even if she couldn't bring herself to put her whole heart into it. scared of a broken promise, even if this was one she was ready to defend with her life, that undying spirit of trying, trying at loyalty even if it killed her. "i'm here. i'll face your problems with you--" and ren choked. "-- even if it takes us a while. i'll try again. i'll do this for you. you don't have to be sorry, yuki."

    ren tried not to dry her tears on the armor of her friend. still, some fell onto the cloth that remained, as though it was inevitable for her to give a part of herself away -- to yuki, her dearest, her shield. when night finally pulled away, rubbing at her eyes through a burning expression, swallowing back the wash of sentimentality just so they could share in it in tangible pieces, the player had been smiling.

    her other hand had remained on yuki's, their fingers intertwined.

    "welcome back, mikoto. it's been a long time." night, trying to stop the dawn from breaking through, tilted her head. "where should i even begin? or-- better yet, do you want to start first instead?"

  8. in the heart of the activity, she could finally discern what was going on. and, lucky for her, they'd split off after a while. but the core of the crowd had still remained, even if the participants had shifted away a slight bit.

    if anything, the group that had caught her attention -- and, likely everyone else's? was the one with star in it. an was there too, with someone she looked close with, but night couldn't place a name to that face. (? whoever it was, she was very pretty, though.) and there was another familiar face, whom night was certain was the groom of that one wedding they attended.

    but right next to star, there was a different woman, who might've been looking extremely out of place.

    the reason for their gathering, perhaps? maybe someone famous?

    her gaze had fell on acanthus before it bounced away. something about digging holes? she wasn't sure how she'd feel about talking up people of the frontlines, right now, especially after she swore she spotted one woman dive into the group talking a big game about getting to know people to win the game.

    because it looked like everyone was having a day off.

    she made a mental note that day had gone off, so that other too-good-to-be-true blonde down by the waves wasn't her missing other. made another one to ask acanthus what the appeal of the beach was for her. for now, instead, night slipped out of hiding, hoping she wouldn't be noticed by literally everybody else. by proximity alone, night was trying her best not to cut into their personal space --- mystery woman was standing as close to star, in a similar to how an had been with her friend(?). so it was a good guess that they were present together, right?

    well, star seemed busy. night just hoped she wasn't going to seem rude.

    "excuse me," she started, with a tap on star's-friend-maybe's shoulder. "dare i ask if i should know you? with the crowd gathered around, it looked like one of those meet-a-celebrity events. they're not bothering you now, are they?"

  9. she had expected an to have packed up and ran off by now. but, at the end of it all, an was still standing by night's side, holding their conversation. entirely unlike what she'd expected — judgement and disdain, right from the get-go. well, that made any piece of consolation or advice was worth listening to, right?

    so night listened intently, eyes to the ground ahead of an. her hands overlapped, thumb running over the back of the other. an bore her feelings, her heart out, even if piecing together her sentence in front of an embodied convict was just as scary as actually dating. complicated too was their subject matter — night had wanted to chime in with a curt but wistful, 'i'll say' when it came to committing to the wrong partner.

    but she had to brace herself for the harsh review afterwards. her throat had tightened, guilt crawling down her back. because night knew she deserved that sort of judgement; had thought about it in turn, even when she didn't want to. she knew, and expected, that she was going to receive its passage eventually.

    she just didn't expect an to chime in with a reflection of her own.

    night said nothing. her gaze had been raised, honest and surprised, when an told her about a friend. and she considered an's perspective, too, sights following a line from the player to the fields they'd just walked through. an never came off as the needy type of person to her, a mere stranger slash acquaintance. and to think about this friend, being asked to offer more of herself day after day...

    night had her head bowed.

    (even if the thought never crossed her mind, subconsciously, they might've known just by crunching their perspectives together: what happened with an and night on their own separate relationships would've run the same course if they gave each other a shot. the logical conclusion upon calculation would have been simple: it would be best they stayed strangers, maybe friends.)

    "We're still friends."

    night imagined she was still friends with nari. she fumbled with her tracksuit. doubt filled her mouth.

    "And in some way, I'm glad that's how my feelings ended, but sometimes, it still kind of...

    "Hurts."

    then an shifted away.

    night wasn't sure how else to feel, nor respond, with something blocking her words from coming through. but she gave herself a moment, because there was a solace to be found, in the way that an had also shared of her own tale. and the sigh that left night seemed to expunge the regret that lingered in consideration of the one she herself had told.

    she ignored that gnawing feeling to ruminate further. they could've spent all day having a pity party otherwise.

    "it hurts," night agreed softly, leaning forward. her own steps away from the blockade spoke of an alienation — foreign, yet not entirely unstable nor unpleasant. as though she had never expected to experience life with that weight lifted off her back to begin with. "it... still hurts, but we carry on."

    she nodded when an came to the same conclusion. shot back a bashful, wobbly grin when her current situationship was mentioned. "i suppose so." because in truth, if it wasn't for her, night wouldn't have even started talking to an, wouldn't have dreamed of talking to koga about it in the first place. so she had to hand it to day, half-proud, even if she was reluctant.

    "So... can you tell me what we're doing here?"

    night wasn't sure why, but she found that she needed to stifle a laugh as she pulled up her receipts. "right." bistro's orders — her gaze lingered on the construct's entry in her contacts for just a beat longer. "i'm here on behalf of a broker who's a little too lazy to skip out of town for a moment. she said we should look around tolbana to see if any estates are up for sale. she might've said something about a guild hall, but i've never heard of plans for establishing one from her. maybe a client?"

    so she shrugged as she closed her menus, and then gestured over to the waterfront. not that night ever did remember tolbana having a river that cut through the city, nor around it. maybe it came with one of the more recent updates? but the lake that it sat beside wound round part of the circumference of the town. the boats that were available were empty, save for an npc to tend to would-be passengers.

    night looked to an with a nod. "i was told to investigate that, too. at the very least, it'll give us a survey around the edge of town while we save up our energy to run through the heart of it and take down any plot listings." she started walking, evening out her pace to match an's. "— i mean, i doubt that there might be any left, but a job's a job, and she still wants me to try. and... i figured, if it's not for that, then at the very least i'll get to enjoy a boat ride." night shot an a small smile. "one that would be better with company."

    they got to the docks. night made her payment, quick and simple, picking out a white gondola that featured a tall bow. she placed a hand on it, and gestured to an of the seats within. "after you."

  10. event? what event? she hadn't heard anything of the sort.

    in fact, night was simply taking a regular walk on the beach. it was like any other day on the twenty-fourth, she'd presumed, one where not many players were about, and there was nothing that necessarily needed her attention. she'd watched her counterpart's gaze drift out towards the coast on their walk, and her own had followed through, even for a short while.

    then her eyes were back on the coast and immediately she noticed that something was awry on their peaceful, merry day.

    "um."

    they stopped walking. night tapped on her mirror's wrist and their head snapped towards the distance, where night was pointing towards. there was a crowd.

    "what the hell is going on over there...?"

    "err... i don't know? a celebrity... meeting?"

    night sighed, and promptly decided to turn around. "i think we can afford to double back, don't you?"

    "i really wanted to head back to the teleporter after that dungeon earlier..."

    "yeah?" night barked back, giving the scene behind them a glance. day hummed, before shaking her head.

    "you can get past this one, i'm sure. i'm headed out. maybe bistro will have a fun time reading the report later."

    "no way," night huffed, watching her counterpart shuffle off. "you're just leaving me to figure out what's going on over there?"

    "catch you on the flip side!" she heard the blonde call, before the hood was draped over their head, and it was as though night had been talking to no one at all. the player rolled her eyes and shuffled forward.

    "rude much."

  11. hadn't even noticed half of the group getting twisted up in white chains. night knew that if she'd taken her eyes off the monster for a single second, she would've lost sight of it, and then she'd have to play the game of 'does it still exist? well i can't see it so surely not, right?' even though she knew it was still alive and kicking. what time she did spare was on making sure she wouldn't trip on the webs thrown at their feet, so she continued her rush down, lunging only at the boss with a leap once she was certain her environment was clear, striking directly at its torso, the only place on the boss where its legs weren't.

    she bounced away, thankfully onto clear ground, before staying a distance away from the walls. was it frenzied, now? it seemed to move way slower than she remembered.

  12. 'go all out' was a viable strategy. night could work with that.

    she lagged behind the group on purpose. mostly about the fact that the twenty-fifth itself was full of creepy crawlies that night wasn't keen on encountering... even if their next mark was going to be one of them. her blade had been at the ready within the time mac cut through the air and sailed down onto the arachnid, and her steps themselves had been full of hesitation, between kat diving in afterwards, and the fact that there was a giant spider ahead to contend with.

    maybe she shouldn't have attended after all. with a snarl, she chased katoka's route through the webs, weaving past silk and charging through what obstacles had been left behind. the light of her sword wasn't the most helpful – it told her more about the spider than she ever wanted to know. with a cut and a dash away, night had her gaze turned behind her as she retreated. getting stuck in webs? no thanks. that didn't sound like fun.

    "why's he so upset about crabs now?" night wondered aloud, watching the kitten trying to struggle free from her housemate's grasp as they both looked over the message that was recently received.

    nyanko cried angrily again.

    "okay." and the player sighed. she hadn't intended to do much today other than look over paperwork for the multitude of excursions she was meant to execute on, but it seemed that her familiar made it incredibly clear that she should be up and about... hunting down a crab. "yeah, i'm on it."

    when she left the house, however, nyanko's meeps were foreign, distant, quiet.

  21. she did the math, and found it unsavoury. so whilst this haunted hall had seemed as though it wasn't meant to be visited in the first place, night had to elevate her frequents to it as near necessary, especially with her most recent escapades asking much of what she could do pushed to their limits.

    there were a slew of updates, too, that bistro had access to its details of. night hadn't figured out how or why just yet. night had barely even been briefed about the subtle ongoings from cardinal. she simply decided that discussions such as those could be sought out at a later date, when they weren't entirely focused on the battle ahead, and when she could feel comfortable taking a break, notes organized, battle plans refreshed.

    for now, grabbing the flame from one of the statue's hands and bounding off seemed like the best move, so that's exactly what night did.
