  1. pandora's wares were open again.

and if night sought to go back, it was partially out of nostalgia; the other half of her queried the wellbeing of its shopkeeper, as she pushed open the door.

part of her expected the store to be abandoned, to be greeted by a ghost or other at best. but the interior appeared to be as it always was – messy, unkempt, full of random crates stacked high and makeshift furniture that she wondered was even used half the time. rundown, dilapidated, unassuming.

and there behind the counter was the merchant, now appraiser, and now night could let out a sigh of comfort. nothing had changed – nothing to worry about.

    "andromeda."

    err, except...

at the counter, night pulled up multiple pieces of equipment in one of those very same crates that were tucked away in the store. that made her just as much of a contributor to the chaos already present as the store owner herself. and as night glanced between an and her cost calculation in her notes, she was silent. stalling. honestly, she was simply looking for an opening to make small talk.

"um... i hope everything was alright since you were open last." she fiddled with her menus a little – a calculator, for one, because there was a percentage fee on top of her identifications. "was anything else keeping you busy, or...?"

night trailing sentence was deliberate. if andromeda was interested in elaborating – well, night was very interested to hear the reason, if there was one provided. but in the case there wasn't (night wasn't the type to open up to anyone else in a heartbeat, after all), she'd continue doing the math in her head as an politely addressed her concerns.

    "and that brings us to..."

when was the last time she was here? it'd been a long while – and night had gotten plenty strong in that amount of time she'd been away. now, she could feasibly get much that most of aincrad could want on a regular basis without too much of a cost. so she was certain the fee for appraisals were something she could handle.

    right?

"... an amount that would wipe the rest of my wallet out... after visiting star."

cue night's whistle, if she could – because she can't.

  2. lost? she most certainly felt as though she was. wasn't exactly too sure what she was looking for on the eighth, other than to investigate a rumor about oberon – which she most certainly failed to associate meaning to it. night decided she would put it on the back burner for the day, and then promptly stumbled into honeydew & hushwind. she'd expected fae, and what she found instead was star, relaxing in the comfort of a great comfy home.

she eyed the place, mouth agape. "you live here? or do you just work here?" the store was grand – and night was envious, but of the building and much less so the neighbourhood. clearing her throat, and hoping she wasn't dealing with any tricky cardinal pawn, she pulled out a case full of several items, eying the information board. not at max yet.

"well, this should help you." night pushed it closer to him, the crate feeling heftier than expected. "um. call it an exchange for pointing me in the right direction to get out of here?"

  6. was wushen really all-seeing? night had wondered.

and in the moment that gears shifted, night felt the atmospheric pressure rise – gradually, then all at once. it happened so quick, almost in a blink, but the coils of wushen were certainly moving, shifting, maw open as it tore into player after player. night wasn't spared from its cuts, the teeth and bite; if not directly, then it happened as the room rumbled and put her into position of direct fire with electricity.

suddenly, the world was stilted, disjointed – but not for her. whatever wushen did ate at her antidote like snacks (did it need medicine? night could bring it some) and instead of the all-encompassing disaster her party members seemed to perceive themselves in, night felt like she was in the eye of a storm. present, but not forgotten; not in danger just yet, but nearly, almost. and there was the voices, too – night wasn't aware why she was hearing tiberius speak all of a sudden, but she knew she heard him; was surprised at herself for being able to recognize his voice, even. was this coming from the outside world? right here, right now – or just a recording?

night didn't know. hell, she chewed at her gums as she watched the dragon whirl around – night didn't know. she didn't know anything else for what might befall them next. didn't know where everybody else was. as she breathed, trying to center herself, she strived to focus instead on what she did know: quick change was up, and her party needed healing.

    where was that aid?

    – she let her sword delve into the dragon's body first as wushen slid past her, before aiming to dart off in an attempt to regroup. likely, the boss had switched tactics, and there was safety in numbers.

where were you after srona's fire?

night just hadn't expected her executioner to have done the talking, after she pressed a strike of sparks and searing heat to the lung's hide.

hell, maybe you set it all up!

she amplified its voice. her ichor spread between its scales. the tar remained, and stained, and grew as it fed incendiary material to the blaze she'd left it, and in the same way it snaked its way across wushen's surface when she dropped that booming crystal, so too did the echoes of accusation grow louder.

it's every man for himself now, tiberius had said.

night would see that it wouldn't fall to that.

she searched for the first familiar face she could find. koga – standing in the heart of the room on unsteady ground as the dimensions began to shift. she chased his form, hand extended and pulled him back the moment she caught his cloak. in her eyes, there was a look of concern standing right by defiance as she pressed the healing orb into his hands.

"use it," she said. it wasn't an order, but it certainly sounded like it. and as the lung cried, the room shook and the floor split them apart, she emphasized the need for urgency, eyes not leaving her friend. "now!"

  9. "surely not," night returned, tilting her head slightly about the note of betrayal. she righted it once she realized what he was talking about. "otherwise, i'd be surprised if we hadn't met each other yet by now."

then she let him continue, resting close once again to her knees. her initial hunch was that he got involved, though she hadn't heard of the guild before – night was surprised to know he hadn't. why not? if they were close friends, surely it made sense to make sure they stayed safe.

but to be fair, she wasn't exactly interested in the idea of factions or guilds either, even if her own was more casual association than official regime. if hirru was anything like night, it was likely the freedom or independence was valued better – her eyes darted to the grass, past a passing firefly, as she focused on listening further.

a funeral march, after someone's death; she hadn't heard of lindow, nor opal, either. there was likely a ritual held in his honor – so surely he must've been someone of high standing – but hirru got into the details of what the association must've meant to other players not included in the guild.

"It wasn't an incident.. but a murder."

night could feel her guard immediately come up, even though she hadn't needed to. she had several questions, such as who would've done so, and why? the player saw not what the point of hunting others in a game such as this was, especially with the necessity for collaboration in order to achieve their goal. she swallowed, brows furrowing, before deciding on a final query. "you said he was hunted so that you don't leak anything."

(us? which individuals were included in the definition of us?)

"what was it?" and, cautiously, after asking, she raised a brow. "are you able to reveal it, or would you be hunted now, too, for doing so?"

THE SHOP is located on the fringes of Taft, fronting a large townhouse that seems to be devoid of residents. Yet, the shop appears to be manned near constantly, even when it is reported to not be open for business.

The sounds of its performer are vastly different from most other workshops, as heard by others from the ______________
outside. They are modern and synthetic rather than fantastical, ill suited for the setting. But that, too, may be part of its draw.

It is a young boy in his teens who lives there. He sits behind a basic counter towards the back of the store, blocking two doors — one bedroom, one recording studio. Crystals ______
are displayed as samples on wall indents, acting as shelves alongside the shop's confines. By the entrance, a small collection vanity crystals sit in an open crate. They're prototypes, free for the taking — but they're not great.

Once in a while, however, the PLAY . HOUSE seems to easily get a winner.

  11. In all fairness, NIGHT hadn't exactly been to the fifteenth, either. It had been on her list of 'must-visit places!' but she simply hadn't had the time. Part of her was also saving the visit to the destination for a better opportunity – surely, there had to be a rumor from Bistro that would send her towards Lhasri by now, right? – but on a friend's invitation, she could set all of that aside.

After all, there would be good food involved, and sights to see.

She hadn't anticipated the average, 'how's it going?' kind of question from Koga. Well, perhaps it should've been expected, given how the man and herself regularly fell out of contact once in a while, but just as likely, NIGHT didn't come prepared with answers. "The floor boss?"

A pause, in further consideration. Part of her was also struggling with observing the different items on display as they window-shopped. "Well, sort of," she lied. "Admittedly, I kind of hid away for a while. Sorry I went absent, if you were seeking me out. DAY's been alright – um, helping me through some stuff, actually. We sort of went on vacation to a place called the Zero, and that's about it."

If she glanced to Koga, it was in making sure he didn't seem too interested in her reasons for vanishing all of a sudden. She'd been honest because Koga was one of her closest friends, rather than actually wanting to talk about why she'd went AWOL. In a case of calculated misdirection, she looked to a nearby fruits stall as they walked, nodding towards it. "Hey, that looks good. Was there anything you were looking out for in coming here?"

    Spoiler

On Maxwell's fifth birthday, his father left home.

Maxwell was too young to remember how the household reacted to this news. Or perhaps he'd decided it was one of the things of life not worth remembering. Under the care of his only mother alongside both of his parents' extended family, his journey through teenhood was not rife with struggle nor friction. At some point, he'd wondered if it was because his mother had put on the bravest front from that day onwards; at other times, he'd chalked it up to his older brother, Emmett, and his generous care and concern for Maxwell's wellbeing. Emmett always did seem to act his best as both a kindly parental figure and a best friend. While growing up, the two brothers were almost inseperable.

Things would remain at peace for a long time. Then came along the Nerve Gear and his brother's waning presence in his life; the man, having reached adulthood, proceeded to continue supporting the family, returning the sentiment on his mother's behalf. It was out of joviality that his brother accepted Maxwell's request for a shared past time during their hours off.

Now Demian isn't sure if he has a mother any more. All he does is cling onto the one remaining hope, the only family he has left in the site of a tragedy of imprisonment.

    Spoiler

    VIRTUES

    Hardworking
Out by the front porch of his house is a little garden. It produces small vegetables come spring and summer. It isn't much,Emmett had told him, and Maxwell knew this by the food placed on his dinner on those nights from his harvest. But the work is good discipline, and mom would be proud of you for picking up a hobby that serves us well.

    Encouraging
He learned quickly how he should care for his crops. Sometimes, when his brother wasn't home, he would shuffle around his tiny field, making sure the plants were want for naught. And he shared with them his thoughts, his daily schedule and the pride he held for the little troopers sticking out most of the year under the ground.

    Perseverance
He'd cried when the first seed he ever planted remained dormant for a good month, only noting its indifference to the world once his brother had pointed out its slow progress to him. Emmett smiled at his tears -- either it had been Maxwell's naivety that earned him a laugh, or a kind regard to the encouraging behaviour he'd seen the boy usher on his plant in the days before. And still he'd wanted to do right by his crop. Emmett guided him how to.

    Spoiler

    FLAWS

    Stubborn
Weeds, Emmett had told him, would steal the nutrients from the soil, and sometimes release chemicals to attack your plants. Though it was a simple warning, he hadn't expected it to take a toll on Maxwell, how the kid snuck out of his bedroom come midnight just to watch over his plants in the dark. The boy wouldn't budge, not an inch for the next hour or so; by then, Emmett thought it better to forge a white lie for the kid, so that the both of them could soundly rest in their beds for the night.

    Impressionable
There were a few months that went by in high school that Maxwell wasn't around his beloved field. It was his friends, Emmett realized after questioning him at the dinner table, that would drag him out late into the night week after week. Only after much trial was he able to convince the young boy to have the courage set his own boundaries -- especially so for the people that he liked spending time with. He'd returned to his garden soon after that, to Maxwell's discrete and silent pleasure.

    Repressive
Do you remember the week when I was fighting with mom every night? Emmett asked on occasion, and Maxwell had always answered in the negative. But on those days, the boy had spent the entire night wide awake, listening attentively to their conversation. By the morning light, he would have forgotten it completely, imagining things were fine between his family.

  13. she clicked her tongue. night had assumed the damage from nari would've been able to finish them off, but the skeletons seemed more tenacious than initially expected. she channeled that frustration into two rapid strikes – both diagonal, one upwards then down, that shattered the two would-be bodies into nothing but thin air. vapid – perhaps that's why they lost interest in the quest a long while ago, presuming the corpses and the uncompromising sword to be all that it had to offer.

now she had to try her best to recall what nari had said to her.

"you said something earlier... cramped spaces...? ... nevermind."

in the fuss to rid themselves of the undead, she'd already forgotten about her confusion. night chased her thoughts off with a wave, more pre-occupied with finding that ceremonious sword and seeing where else it would take them.

she stepped out of the room, looking about the corridor. a few doors remained unopened within their immediate vicinity, and night hoped she didn't have to travel too far. she gestured to nari a few doors lined on the opposite wall. "i'll take these. i'll holler if i find the sword, or anything else of note. might be best for you to take the ones along this one – " she gestured to the room behind her, " – seeing as you already opened a few on this side."

the player took two steps ahead, before turning to nari in recollection – if she still had her scythe out, night would gesture to it, hoping to catch her companion's attention. "hey – what's on that weapon, anyway? enhancements wise, i mean. the sword might have something a little different."

  18. less than nothing?

    night wished she was.

watching her friend draw the ire – and impact – of the dragon spoke enough about their dynamic in the fight. she was glad she could trust him with her back, but on her lonesome, watching her cooldown timers, her finger snap at the right moment hadn't exactly done what she'd wanted to do.

so she was still visible, still standing present, apprehensive about her next move. night had a plan for many things – but for this one, she was lacking.

    "come on..."

the player hissed and looked about. was wushen really all-seeing? all encompassing, sure – but to realize even the slightest bit of movement in its periphery given the comparisons in their scale was difficult believe. it pained her to realize thereafter how accurate it was at striking her twice. night sighed and rolled her head, shuffling away from her present position. better then to follow her tank's lead once she'd gotten her executioner back in, then.

  19. funny how, despite the differences in their level of experience and expertise, their stories tended to sound the same. and in that, there was something to appreciate, night thought. she brought her knees up to her neck in a shift, resting her cheek upon them as she continued to listen. metal armor in comparison to leather – she could only nod, considering.

but the unusual part was in realizing how he hadn't seen his tutor ever since. she'd been looking away, imagining the tale as hirru regaled her, but night faced him upon that revelation. the parting so soon? she couldn't have imagined. then past that, the player was equally surprised to hear about her friend's presence in the first floor's labyrinths. she'd neglected them as hunting grounds in the past, preferring to quests than a maze in the middle of nowhere.

the names he'd mentioned, night hadn't heard before. so she thought to have penned the information down, somewhere; granted, it felt rude to be doing so when listening as a friend. to have joined the front with a group of familiar individuals; how would that feel, she wondered? so they were close – she knew they had to be – the same way she'd had yuki's back and vice versa in their ascent towards eligibility for the twenty-fifth.

and then, of course, the fateful guild invitation.

she blinked at hirru's own interruption.

"no, you're not," night replied, becoming aware of how she might have been presenting herself. restless? she'd hoped not. even in that distant stare, she had a lot of thoughts on her mind; questions to ask. the crimson blades was one of them.

she straightened her back, leaving her lean and hunch. "i knew you were a veteran, but i didn't imagine your experience to extend so far... back. i'd barely heard a word of progress on the first after the twenty-fourth, so that's when i started – for context, i mean." night adjusted her position, so that she'd felt a little more comfortable in listening. "do go on."

  20. "i--"

first of all, night hadn't expected the ambush. the last time she was present, all enemies came right at them in a single filed line. but noticing the room interiors being devoid of a lamp-sword and filled with monsters instead, she bit her tongue. recovered her words once again after she'd took point ahead of nari, filling in the space that her party member had left open for night's charge in. "what does that even mean?"

she wasn't going to wait for an explanation. with the tip of her sword pointed right between the shambling cloaks' ribs, she drove it through the queued duo and shoved them back into the room. darkness, again – which made what demonic energies her promise had decided to leak invisible, but it bought night enough time to pace about in her positioning and kick over a defunct lamp.

despite its state, the room seemed to light up from this interaction.

"think there's ample space within." night beckoned her companion in with a wave. "they're nearly wasted. you can afford the close quarters."

  21. "or your armor," night returned, with a snort and a grin. she hadn't exactly been expecting to run into trash mobs so soon – was hoping she would be able to get to the warden without running into them, actually. but the twenty-fifth's layout was inhospitable; everyone knew of that, especially yuki, so perhaps night should've accepted her fate of encountering a stray soul or another.

what shambled up to them were two husks, near carcasses – one minotaur, one orc. and night didn't exactly know where the orc came from, but threw herself into the fray nonetheless. her sword bit into the hide of the minotaur, finding its quarry familiar, before she whipped about to strike back to orc headed her way and yuki's. the player didn't carry any food meant for taking.

"do any of the monsters seem different to you on this floor?" she asked, placing her guard up with the raise of her sword. just like old times. "not that i'd ventured into it before the shadow fight. but i'm not sure if i've seen an orc here, of all other places..."
