[EV-F1] "Fear the Reapers!" (pt. 1)

For a split second, she thought An did it. Then her vision cleared and she saw the girl's dismayed expression and the undead going straight back to... her. Mishiro inched backwards, only for the back of her knees to hit the edge of the plastic chair. Falling back, the zombie wasted no time in following and trying to pin her with its weight but she managed to wedge her axe between the two of them and push it off just enough for her to roll to the side and pull herself up into a crouch. She snatched up her axe and went straight for its exposed back, but only succeeded in embedding her blade deep into the muddy soil.

Oh, she had landed on that? With a displeased expression, she flicked mud and dirt from her hair and armor and then gripped her axe's handle with both of her hands.

[Andromeda 0]

One more hit, the silver-haired player chanted in her mind. It worked the last time, it should work with this one, too! This mob was giving them all trouble: it used its weird regeneration ability on Arabelle, constantly attacked Mishiro while keeping out of her axe's swings when it mattered, and survived an attack from An. Well, to be fair, it was actually on her, who didn't crit when she was supposed to, but whatever. Crits were unreliable.

As soon as it backed away from Mishiro's attack, An swiftly swung her rapier at it - not aiming for anything in particular, if she made even the smallest cut on its hand it should count as a deduction of one HP and it would all be over - and missed. The zombie had jumped back at the last moment, and finding that An was the only person in its way, simply barged past her and towards Mishiro.

"Ohhh... not again!"

And yet again, the zombie passed by her in favor of getting to the delicious snack that was Mishiro

"I swear, I think this thing just developed a crush on you or something!" Arabelle yelled. She had her scythe at the ready, but she couldn't do anything as the zombie wailed on her teammate... again. "Wouldn't be the first toxic person who did though! But to the other guy's credit, at least he didn't try to actually eat you or something!"

In the literal sense. In the figurative sense though... huehuehuehue.

She glanced at An, who somehow seemed even more concerned for her best friend than she was - well, she just kept forgetting that their axe-wielder would only take one damage from attacks regardless, was how she rationalized it - and looked back at the zombie with a glare. Though it wasn't hitting her as much as it was with her other teammate, this was dragging on for far too long and putting everyone in a rotten mood in general.

Arabelle twirled her scythe and shot forward.

"It's time to accept your death!" 

And she made it. By force. It disintegrated at her scythe's touch.

Zombie no. 43 burst into data fragments. Mishiro leaned against her axe, exhausted, and trying to regain her bearings. In the end, they were the ones who won yet she felt completely, utterly defeated. Maybe it was the prospect of being the mob's target the entire time and constantly having to be on her guard, or that it took ages just to finish off the leftovers from Arabelle's initial attack. 

At her current state, she didn't even have enough energy to respond to Arabelle's joke. Made in poor taste? Probably. And it probably hurt a bit, too. But she didn't care at the moment. All she wanted was to nap at one of her cafe's tables surrounded by the bittersweet, comforting smell... of... coffee...

Mishiro caught herself before she could fall. Then she made her way over to a chair and sat down. "I'm ready for another round. Just... give me a moment."

Yesss!!! The accursed thing was dead! And it died at such a cool moment, too! An internally celebrated as she regrouped with her teammates, wholly unaware of just how morbid she just sounded. I mean, celebrating the death of something? Even if it was an enemy, her parents and siblings would probably have heart attacks. Humming to herself, she walked up to Arabelle and held up her hand for a high-five. "Here's to us for finally finishing it off, yeah? Oh, also, remember the little bet we made?" An leaned in, conspiratorially. "I think I lost. No, really. I did. There's no denying the effort that took. I'll take us to a nice breakfast place in the morning, alright?"

An just wanted them to have a good time after all this.

Turning to Mishiro though, her spirits dampened slightly. She had never seen the girl look so worn out and part of her wondered if she could even hold herself together in the next round. "Are you sure? You can sit the next one out if you want."

Yeah, Harriette. Way to try pulling out the 40% of the team's functionality. You go, girl.

Finally. Now that it was over, the only thing she wished was that she had wiped it with a x14 Sword Art just for the heck of it. It pissed her off, that's all. Arabelle gave the ever-energetic An a tired smile and returned her high-five. "Really? That's nice of you~. Though in the morning, hm..." She glanced over at Mishiro, who stood by her axe looking a bit zoned out. "If Mishiro has some vanity crafts, we already have our breakfast place. You're welcome to join us for that, too. How about lunch, then?"

She turned back to her friend to ask a question only to find her falling backwards. "Hey, hey!" Without thinking, Arabelle had stooped forward to catch Mishiro but she snapped out of it herself. "Geez, Shiro-chan. Don't push yourself. You can go back to the stage and sit this one out. Or heck, if it assures you, you can watch me deal the initial blow and go right back when An can handle the rest. Got it?"

Claude would actually kill her if she came back with Mishiro in this state.

"An, let's go. As always, we're picking off the nearest group!"

She rocketed towards the group of creeps and the ground shook at the force of her Sword Art. Standing amidst the ruined plastic chairs,  she straightened and assessed the results of her attack.

Two down. Two still standing at full HP.

Her gaze locked with Mishiro's.

"I am fine," she answered insistently. Saying that with her head resting on an armored hand did not make for the very convincing show though."Physical effects are minimized in-game. I can survive many of their hits with my armor and it's not like my performance would be hindered by this. I can still fight."

She was met with two pairs of very concerned stares. Perhaps the lack of sleep had finally gotten to her; she couldn't recall any other situation where she tired so easily in combat. But... it was just a small sensation that may or may not have made her a bit sluggish in her movements. No concern, she could push through it. She knew how to fight and she knew how to adapt.

Eventually though, Arabelle brought up an option she could at least easily agree with. And she would be lying if she said resting on the stage was entirely unappealing at the moment. "Fine. I shall remain at a distance, then."

--And she watched from a distance as Arabelle only killed half, leaving the rest at full HP. As she thought. She wasn't the only one who was tired from the last fight.

"I guess you do need my help after all. Rejoining the fight."

With black smoke emanating from her axe, she swung it up in an uppercut only for the undead - still lively at its full HP - to evade the slower attack as soon as it came. 

She was sensing another long drawn-out fight in the horizon.

An nodded along to her team leader's words with the sternest expression she could muster. It was just one round. Did she just give too much credit to herself? Well, maybe she did. Maybe she was perfectly valid for doing so; An would be completely useless against a mob that had higher than 1 HP. "Let's take an extended break after this round, then! It should be enough for all of us to recover... right, Arabelle?"

There was no convincing Mishiro and as it turns out, they didn't really have a choice. The aftermath of Arabelle's attack still left way to many alive for either of their liking and even An was ready to ask the other girl to rejoin them unprompted.

"After you, Shiro!" 

--Mishiro missed her attack. An charged up a Sword Art, only to be met with the same result. She looked at her teammate, then at the zombie they were facing. This situation felt strangely familiar. An's expression twisted into a grimace. Not again!!

Well, that hadn't been a nice start. She clicked her tongue in annoyance and quickly readied her scythe as the zombies came at her, ready to avenge their fallen comrades. Mishiro had taken one look at her and declared her intention to fight alongside them for a bit longer and An... was also there. They'd already admitted the new girl's weakness earlier, and her taking on a mob by herself was a terrible idea, even with her higher MIT value. 

"I guess you do," Arabelle echoed. She looked over her shoulder to her teammates and indicated one of the zombies. "Both of you take the one on my left, I'll handle the other one myself."

She didn't want this to drag on any longer. Activating a Sword Art, she tore her way through her target's flesh and stabbed it through the stomach with her hilt. No regen from the zombie this time, thankfully. Arabelle turned her head to assess her teammates' progress.

"Tch." This one wasn't even trying to hit them back. It had its eyes on Arabelle and was even chasing after the other girl while paying her and An no heed. They needn't worry about defending, only about finding an opening and exploiting it. It should be easier in theory... so why were they doing even worse than before? Mishiro could count multiple instances where she killed a zombie herself, and defending from attacks no less.

Maybe it was the exhaustion and the darkness creeping in from the edge of her vision. It wasn't a headache, that was impossible in SAO, but she could barely keep her vision focused.

An missed her attack. Arabelle sent her assigned target to its death. The last zombie clawed its way towards the scythe wielder and very nearly landed its reckless attack. Mishiro appeared behind it and sent another basic swing its way.

"Damn it!" 

An couldn't restrain her cry of exasperation. She wasn't blaming herself, she definitely wasn't, not after  the talk they had earlier -  but it was turning more difficult as the battle went on. Once again, she had missed and it meant sitting back until she could regenerate enough energy for her only Sword Art to be usable. And once again, there was only one mob in their way, Arabelle had taken care of hers earlier. She glanced at her teammate, then at the last zombie that remained at full HP. There was no way they were killing it in one round, and Mishiro was looking worse.

"I'm so sorry, Arabelle, but can you handle this for us?" At that point, convincing their team leader to finish it off was all she could do. An glanced up at her energy bar, then gestured to the zombie's HP once the small purple-haired girl looked over. "There's no point conserving energy now, we're all tired. We'll do better once we're rested up next round!"

"I heard you, loud and clear!" But really, An didn't need to say it out loud. Arabelle had already noticed how terribly they were all faring. And she was starting to tire as well. A break was definitely in order, regardless of how little they had killed since the last time. 

She was going to end this round in one attack!

Facing the last zombie, the small purple-haired girl rolled to the side to evade its attacks. She took a reallyyy quick second to appreciate how light her armor made her feel, otherwise she wouldn't have such mobility in the battlefield. Allowed her scythe to flare up with one last Sword Art, Arabelle heaved her weapon up and rent the remaining zombie in half.

Arabelle turned to the rest of her team with a cheerful smile. Another round where she did 100% of the work! She really was proud of how far she'd come as a DPS. "Alright, everyone. Back to the stage for now!"

--And before she could even land a hit on it, the last undead disintegrated at the touch of Shikama Douji's blade.

"Thanks," Mishiro breathed. She quelled her disappointment, releasing it like the tension on her shoulders. None of them seemed to care about conserving energy now; they had discarded their current strategy in favor of wiping out their current group of mobs as quickly as possible. They would have better luck the next time they headed back out. Hopefully. She looked over her shoulder to check on An before facing forward to follow after Arabelle as their team leader led them past groups of players battling mobs and the mess of torn decorations and fallen chairs that now littered the ground.

She stopped dead. 

Standing in their way was a lone zombie. It dragged itself forward, favoring its left food, and its head and tongue lolled to the side. Apparently, the last battle had led them a bit too far from the stage. Taking any detours would lead them to more populated areas of the audience area. They had to fight their way through. Mishiro gripped her axe and the next thing she knew, she was rocketing forward with red flames consuming her weapon and stabbing its blade through the zombie's chest. She recovered, pulled her blade off, and kicked off its chest and launched herself backwards.

[Andromeda 0]

An gave Arabelle a grateful smile. "Aghhh, finally!" Even though she hadn't done as much damage compared to the other two, she was dead tired. Like if she even lay down, she'd immediately fall asleep or something. Now that she thought about it... a catnap sounded nice. An's crimson eyes turned dreamy at the thought... but she quickly snapped back to reality when their leader called for them to retreat. The silver-haired player stretched and sheathed her rapier; she wasn't so used to running with it in one of her hands. "Shiro, do you need help--?"

--The girl ran past her, exhausted but stoic as ever.

"Guess not, then."

She followed the other two and inelegantly skidded to a stop. Peeking past them, she realized why. There was another zombie in their way, and Mishiro was already charging forward to engage with it. 

Do these guys never end?!

As the girl in black armor tore her axe free and kicked off the zombie, disorienting it, An sped up and took advantage of its dazed state to light up her rapier and embed it into the wound already marking its torso. She almost slipped, backpedaled, then properly pulled herself back after that minor stutter. It was all on their team leader now.

[Arabelle 0]

Gosh, these things really weren't giving up, were they? She barely managed to restrain her exasperated groan as she raced forward, only slowing down a little bit to watch her teammates land the first attacks. The combined damage from An and Mishiro's attacks lowered the zombie's HP just enough for her to be able to wipe it out with a weaker Sword Art. Lovely. They deserved at least some sincere praise from her once they got through this.

That didn't mean her finisher couldn't be flashy though.

Arabelle charged a Sword Art as she advanced.

"Thanks, everyone! Now, step aside!" 

The zombie went flying at the force of two successive uppercuts. Then, in the split-second that it lingered midair, it met the edge of Arabelle's flaming scythe once again. With a smug smile, the small purple-haired girl dug her blade in deeper before allowing her heavy weapon to guide her and bringing both player and mob back to the ground with a loud crash. 

--And for a moment, silence. 

The dust settled to reveal the visage of the girl pulling herself up amidst the wreckage she had caused. Now that might have been overkill, she thought to herself rather nonchalantly. Arabelle pulled her scythe from the ground, data fragments fluttering up into the air and blinking out of existence around her. Her signature smile remained unfading as she gave her scythe a showy little twirl and held it beside her, allowing the large weapon to tower over her smaller form.
