  1. no matter, she will tolerate being part of the flock until she found answers on her own.

she had moved up from the place where she previously stood -- upwards to the peak of a barricade made up of piled-up desks, then to a second-floor ledge when a couple of npcs attempted to follow, the mount sent crashing down behind her. she turned her head, peered into the window in mild curiosity, and only saw drawn curtains and her reflection.

ladonian, galtean, they all looked the same to her. charcoal covered hands. clothes sticking to their skin with sweat. they were a single wriggling body of flesh conducting fear like electricity as the ring of light amidst the protective encirclement of airships widened. she felt the heat sinking into her skin. the people beneath her were pressed so impossibly close to one another in their bid to get behind the too-few places that offered cover, she thought she could see them grafting together in places.

arabelle leaned her head against the window and closed her eyes, breathing slow.

(the curtains fluttered from an invisible wind.)

she heard the enemy cannons fire. she felt relief bloom from the side of her head, and the air she breathed no longer felt like fire. when she opened her eyes, it was to the sight of the shells exploding against an invisible barrier.

like there had been anything that warranted concern. it was still quite a lovely day.

    she dropped down the ledge.

the people watched their protector's figure in awe. it was responsible for the barrier, but the rebels' discarded props held her interest. she picked through the emptier open areas, her gaze passing over extinguished torches, pitchforks and spades, until she found it: a standard ripped clean from its pole, blackened in some parts from smoke, but still fairly distinguishable. she folded it lengthwise and wound it around her forearm before she set off for the docks at a languid pace, the brilliant lights of the explosions dotting the skies above.

the ships the youngest prince had so helpfully procured for them were nothing more than tiny civilian shuttles, zero military capabilities aside from the fact that they could fly, the enemy fleet was hundreds of meters up in the air, and there was currently no way to mount a resistance on ground level. she didn't spare any time picking through the offerings; she went for the rightmost dock, taking the stairs two at a time, then swung herself over the shuttle's railing. once on deck, she walked along the inner edges in a single circle, familiarizing herself with the vehicle. the airship had two levels: the upper had the controls, the lower was a windowless hold that could comfortably accommodate about a dozen people.

frowning contemplatively, arabelle flipped the hatch to the lower level open before she seated herself at the helm, her hands drifting over the panel. she tested each control while still moored, checking the ship's reaction and the changes in the console. when she was done, she withdrew the anchor and let the shuttle float idly in the air for a moment.

she was going to pilot this ship close enough to a dreadnought, then send it full throttle at one of the infantry units and hop onto her new ride before the crash could kill her.

she supposed she already had half the qualifications for the job.

  2. (oh, she thought, she must be doing very well, to draw that out of him.)

up went arabelle's sword, and she would've socked the man on the underside of his jaw had she not reduced the momentum at the last second. the resulting hit became a soft tap.

they were back to the same score, but there was one point left between them and she expected the increased pressure was getting to him. because it was getting to her: the blood thrumming beneath her fingertips, the feeling that she was on the knife-edge of breaking the contemplative calm of her expression. she liked the occasional challenge and she liked winning. she knew what her impulses were suggesting to her and by extension that her opponent was being tempted as well.

which was why morgenstern would find the distance between them widening once again. it was a situation identical to the third round, with the exception being that arabelle was now slowly circling him, her nondominant hand poised at the top of her hilt rather than gripping it outright.

there was this saying, that she didn't need to fix something that wasn't already broken — and for all the tricks that she had played, this was the only one where she had scored a point before her opponent. that saying was utterly inapplicable to this match-up and she was just bringing it up to fool around with the narrative a little. old tricks were as good as dirt against an opponent who could stomp her at any moment, and the ruse that she was focused solely on defending her place in the match only lasted long enough for her to discern his plan.

she'd meet him in the middle instead, the full force of a scythe wielder's attack directed not at him, but at the wooden sword in his hand.

    (sorry event host, part two.)

  3. good fortune that it took more than a failed plot for arabelle to lose her wits. she wasn't going to fall back on less tasteful habits; far from it in a harmless duel with a crowd on every side, but surrendering had been the farthest thing from her mind when the sword came straight for the peak of her shoulder, she wanted to angle her bokken differently, to thrust the point into morgenstern's knee milliseconds after his blow was slated to land.

mid-swing, morgenstern stopped. immediately, arabelle locked her movements in place.

and stopped breathing. it was easier that way.

then she batted morgenstern's bokken with hers, bringing it to complete its arc and lightly tap its intended destination. "all yours," she conceded easily.

they parted. following his example, she took a few steps backward herself, then placed her guard up and waited with her head tilted slightly as if in invitation. and when her opponent took that as his cue to attack, the smile that curved up arabelle's lips nearly gave her away.

    before he moved, he looked,

    there.

    --!

she didn't want him as close as he had been prior. she spun, knocked his sword away from her body, and immediately retaliated. the 'hit', this time, was a gentle but firm tap to his exposed side. arabelle backed out of his reach long enough to call, "one point," before she closed the distance once again. they were on equal ground but she could tolerate less mistakes. she would aim to deflect the first swing that came her way, then adapt a more familiar two-handed grip on her bokken and make her own.

if anyone were to point at the newcomer and say "this woman came from the nobles district. i saw her indulging in a glass of wine through a third-floor window," arabelle would have about a dozen choreographed responses ripe for the picking from the time she spent dwelling on the subject within her mind as she hopped from roof to roof in hastily changed musketeer attire, nobles district to lower ladonia. however, as the present crowd looked like a moral bunch, she would have to cross out the one closest to the truth -- in which she had indeed lounged comfortably beside a window, sipping from a glass of cherry wine because she did not care.

(really, some of them looked so invested. it had to be some form of projection.)

(she didn't need that same intensity. but she couldn't look bored either.)

arabelle looked skyward, at the approaching fleet, at the back of the young prince who'd naturally placed himself a level above them, then sidewards at a player nearest to her in their little cluster of... rebels, she supposed.

"mind catching me up?" with the time constraint, that didn't sound right. she  narrowed her inquiry to something she couldn't easily infer. "the event started about an hour or two ago and everyone was prompted to make for the castle. what happened in the meantime that brought everyone and the youngest prince to gather at the lower levels instead?"

strolling to the center of the dojo, arabelle let her gaze wander over the guests who kept to the walls. it was in good sense that the dueling pairs would only have their eyes on their respective matches, so if there were any pair of eyes she felt she needed to devote her spare energy worrying about, it would be from those dedicated to spectating.

oh, was that cordelia? arabelle slowed her steps, and if the disturbance within the flow of movement in the dojo caught the other's attention, she would hold up a hand, wiggling her fingers giddily in the air. cordelia could at least pick her face out of a crowd. she remembered she came off a little too enthusiastic.

she found her place just as a semi-transparent duel screen appeared at the halfway point between her and her partner; a per-second countdown from thirty.

    "hello~."「"こんにちは~。"」

her opponent was a morgenstern. he was a frontliner, (a feast for the eyes,) and he was popular enough for arabelle to know that the difference in their skill in wielding a one-handed sword was sky high. she could not weigh how much or how little of a fortune it was that they were using training weapons. "call me arabelle." by this time the countdown was halved, and she had not yet taken a stance nor slid her wooden sword out of its sheath, instead smiling languorously at the pretty face on the other side of the screen, one foot crossed behind the other. "i feel livelier on this day than any other, but i'm a bit lacking in experience.

"so, anything that happens from this point is fair, isn't it?"

the screen vanished and two things happened:

    1. a quickdraw and a quicker disposal; her bokken's sheath sent flying towards some indeterminate point behind her. (sorry, event host.)
    2. then a resounding clash of wooden blades, and both players found their swords locked, arabelle's hand trembling beneath morgenstern's steadier grip.

a strained smile grew on her lips.

this wasn't a good position at all. she endured it a second more, enough to push herself forward until her blade was nearly perpendicular to her arm, and twisted out of the angle of his attack. if he was stronger, then she would use it against him to send him off-balance and land the first blow on his unguarded side.

arabelle had been here before, at the periphery of a floor boss meeting some couple of months ago. she had left educated on the goings-on within the frontlines, the landmark battles, and not much else. with a frontline-tied trading guild in attendance, anything an independent crafter had to offer was plain redundant, so she had taken the courtesy of making herself scarce right after, leaving quickly after she gave her regards to the few people she had greeted. she had to tamp down her natural embarrassment upon her recognition of the venue before she sent an eagerly-worded application to the host.

regular people would not remember inane details, like the fact that a person had not spoken at all weighed against the arguments that flew across the room that day, like the order in which arabelle had watched the rest after her arrived in, like the precise minutes and seconds before the meeting when she had secured a boat ride and noticed the guests were coming in at a slow trickle.

    twenty-two minutes. forty-six seconds.

(she... was throwing her lot in with prior experience. and fate, if she were to suspend her disbelief over it, had served her that role and its fruits on a silver platter. before the woman ever sought, there was groundwork. the full suite bergamasque on moon-drenched keys. replicating it by her lonesome would be difficult, even in partiality. "arabelle" was a lovely person, but loveliness only carried one as far as the surface, but "arabelle"–

but "arabelle" wasn't raised to give away to reason.)

"morning..." she greeted the boy at the docks, her smile sleep-soft at the edges. to his question, she paused, searching for something to match within her mind. the event was informal. tacky name, even. ""arabelle" should be in the bracket, if you have one on you."

the chokkibune rocked beneath her feet as she boarded. she folded her skirt beneath her, fixing her hair, retying a red rope bracelet on her wrist that had come loose during the walk prior. still at the dock, the boy retrieved his oars and was moving to hop in after her when arabelle's hand dropped to her lap, the bracelet still unsecured. "ah, hold on."

the boy stopped, followed her gaze to some indeterminate point over his shoulder, then straightened his back at the approach of another player. "sorry, miss, are the two of you together?"

funny wording for a staffer of a valentine's event. she appeared to study newcomer for a moment, fingers carelessly splayed over the space where her kimono's skirt ended and her tights began. "no, no," and directed vaguely to both, "but there's more than enough for two. let's save you a trip, shall we?"

tearing up while looking @ dreadnought leviathan references.

    - ladonian military fires,
    - barrier,

    - galtean standard,
    - board ship, pilot seat (leave this open for ppl who might hop in)
    - "hold on tight tho... bc i'm crashing this thing full speed at enemy starboard."

    Spoiler

the overthrow of the twenty-sixth floor's king was not something she thought would be left to the non-frontline majority, and she had been content to treat it as a minor event until the ladonian military's airships cast shadows over the district and she had to flee the area to avoid being caught up in the crossfire alone.
