  2. Eh? Yuki was here again. Thankfully, she hadn’t actually followed through on her promise of kissing her last time; An would have just turned into a blubbering mess as soon as the woman stopped before her counter.

    “Um. Yes! Th-thanks so much!”

However, that didn’t mean her face wouldn’t instantly warm upon hearing the compliment. Was luck even something she should be proud of? It’s not like it was in her control, right? An cracked a small smile as she accepted the item. Today, it was a single order to identify a katana. A [demonic] katana. ("Whoa...! Where did you even find this?") Yuki had also attached a consumable that gave a much-appreciated buff to her odds.

But, look– the liquid bubbling inside was a very suspicious and unappetizing green, and it was aptly named a [Witch’s Brew].

    An looked at the vial.

Then An looked at the buff in an open stats window.

Hahaha, no– she totally hadn’t forgotten that it was common sense that there was a menu option that allowed a player to ‘consume’ a buff without actually… consuming the item itself. An totally did not have a very long pause where she tried to figure out how to politely ask Yuki if there was something else that looked less like it could kill her instantly from food poisoning. As the last fragments of the vial dissipated at her fingertips, she pulled up the katana’s identification window.

    Four slots, here goes nothing–

  3. They were going to fight something.

    Okay.

    –What.

Tanabata was nice and peaceful. It was all about hope and wishes. But was the calamity that would rend apart their memory of the children's floating paper train, a culmination of everyone's’ efforts chugging away beneath a night sky illuminated with the star festival’s last fireworks, the system’s way of saying that this was all futile so long as they were still trapped within Aincrad’s bounds? The rest of the players who were strong enough to stand appeared to already have gotten acquainted with the fact, and An felt she was lagging very far behind.

A little group had loosely huddled together amid the confusion, and she was fortunately close enough to the edge that she heard one of the more outspoken players’ attempt at making the bunch into less of a dumbfounded scattering of individuals and more of a somewhat functioning team once whatever was coming at them… came at them.

What in the world was ‘innate power?’

    But, okay. Builds. Builds. Builds.

    “Oh, I’ll go next!”

An would blurt when no one else participated, but the pause that followed was probably long enough for the others to think her brain had encountered an error and decided to reboot mid-sentence.

    Stick with her here.

    She was a DPS.

–Because [Rapier] was the only skill she had leveled.

–But also, she had no DMG or ACC enhancements to speak of. On her main equipment set. Switching would reduce her MIT, and any reduction to her MIT equals a higher probability of getting squished.

–So she was left relying on the DoTs that activated by chance on her weapon and her shield.

–Oh, right! Her shield. So that made her a bit of a tank, right? She even had more MIT than an average T1 player and everything.

–But also also, she had zero taunting capability. And again, no ACC.

How was she supposed to sum that up-?!

My boat, her mind helpfully supplied.

“It’s actually, um, complicated,” An finally said, her face heating up. But she had to put something together now that everyone was looking at her, no matter how much of a disaster came out. “I-I can do everything but healing, but since I don’t have enough levels, none of the things I do are actually effective!”

  4. Um.

Did someone set off too many fireworks at once…?

One moment, An – and her boat – was admiring the colors that painted the night sky in beautiful patterns, and the next, she – and her rented boat – was falling into a tear in the fabric of reality into whatever lay beneath.

Wait, that was just Floor 21.

    “OOF!”

Betelguese and Rigel’s combined powers (??) may have ensured a smooth landing, but even the gods (???) could do nothing to prevent a still-disoriented An from stumbling around and then eventually tripping over herself once her feet touched the ground. “Aaagh, god, what? She still hadn’t entirely processed the happenings, but An sensed enough danger to pull herself up as fast as she could. The ground spun beneath her – but she knew it was just all in her head because everyone else looked fine, if not a little fearful, and she pushed through the murk in her mind to bring down an inventory window and swap into her battle equipment.

    Where was everyone?

    Jack's Corrupted Legacy
    T1 Demonic Rapier -- Cursed | [x2] Blight | Burn

[reference] "...and they shall cast them into the furnace of fire, where there was weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth." A malicious, unstable weapon hidden beneath a plain semblance. Patterns of vines and fleur-de-lis are etched onto its black swept hilt and its blade is 38 in. long. It takes on a crimson red aura when a Sword Art is activated. At random, unpredictable occurrences, the weapon will burst into flames - sometimes red, sometimes a darker hue, and sometimes a pitch black in color - and inflict a strong damage-over-time effect on its enemy. | []

    T1 Demonic Shield
-- Cursed | Frost Thorns | Frost Aura | Mitigation

"The shield which once stood before the sun and kept the Earth from being set aflame." A small round shield perpetually encased in a thick layer of unyielding ice. Its surface is uneven, with sharp ice crystals jutting out and rising up, and any attack aimed at it would sure result in a nasty counter-effect. Attacks made from afar or otherwise aren't left without retribution either, as the opponent would feel themselves surrounded by an intense chill. When equipped alongside any item with a flame enhancement, the ice becomes dyed with an auburn hue but does not lose any of its intensity. | []

    Rugged Leather Jerkin

Contrary to the amateur merchant's belief, this light armor was crafted by the goblins themselves. It is made of fibre leather and a few frayed edges imply a rather clumsy craftsmanship. But it's light and covers the important places, and the merchant insists it's completely fine to wear! | []

  8. Oh.

She thought she would have said that out loud, but no words escaped past her parted lips. ‘I already knew that.’ It was simple. Mishiro would probably just nod and take it as neutrally as she did her. It was so simple. But something tightened around her throat, choking out all the other usual apologies and stammerings her mind might have cooked up – like a small oversight was somehow one of her greatest failings. Like a typo in an important paper. Like a function failing to execute because of a single undefined variable.

It was weird and a bit terrible.

An dipped her hand back into the water to keep herself occupied. Her fingers were still in the shallow blue, and she let the stars drift naturally to her open palm.

Perhaps she’d always been a bit on the weird side.

Perhaps it was just the stars in the air.

    Perhaps it was just Mishiro.

“I wouldn’t have noticed anything from this distance,” added the girl's voice. “You’re very observant.”

    It was, indeed, Mishiro.

  9. Because it hadn't ended at another 'perhaps.'

Progress! Bond level up! For a moment, victory trumpets played in her ears. An wouldn't say they were now as buddy-buddy as she'd... kind of... hoped they were, but they were now kind of buddy-buddy.

Look, your prose suffers when you're rushing too.

Well, okay. At least they were functional enough to not spend the next hour in total awkward silence. In a boat that was only large enough to accommodate two. She hoped.

--"Even so, different people want different things!"--
--"And that's what makes it completely possible for one person to disrupt the experience of another."--

     ...But this was progress, right?

    --"W-well, maybe."--

It had taken An a record two seconds to go back on her feeling of triumph. Because it wasn't a huge step forward; Mishiro was just responding to her. Like what she probably did to every stranger to be polite, whilst hiding her own annoyance? Could anyone ever look at that girl's face and say confidently that they could tell what was going on in her head? Was it better to make an assumption or be pessimistic? She'd already fumbled once when Mishiro's PM dropped the Biggest Hint Ever, who's to say she wouldn't do it again?

    She cringed.

She cleared her throat, and in the growing pause, began again. "I just thought since it's a festival, everyone would be in good spirits, so maybe it would be nice to totally loosen up or something..."

She stared down at her stars.

    And then no one talked.

    For. Five. Whole. Seconds.

Anxiety on a scale of ten: 11.

"I-I-I mean, it's not that, I, ah, don't think we shouldn't have any sort of order or anything, I just think banishing lanterns into existence without prior notice is a bit... you know?"

    No, she wouldn't know!

  10. They didn't go too far. Their little rowboat faithfully clung to the edges of the lake where the precious stones were farther and fewer in between. Even so— An thought the view was beautiful.

Her edginess around her current company wasn't so much of a concern now. Had the colors of the strange materials varied, she would've thought she was floating at the edge of the galaxy! Gingerly, she inched closer to the side. She felt their warmth as she let her hand glide into the water, gathering another handful into her cupped palm until Mishiro's rowing slowed to a stop.

The stars were still twinkling around them when An pulled back her hand and picked one from the small pile.

"What were you saying about the lanterns earlier?"

    She nearly dropped the stone.

    "W-what."

The victory she thought she would've felt was just dampened by confusion and then a second anxiety of: oh my god, she knows you're talkative but you kept your mouth shut for so long, wasn't that just much weirder than annoying her with your talking? wait, but you don't want to annoy her either and you're better than forcing your opinion on someone who literally doesn't care--

"The lanterns," Mishiro said. Like it was the most obvious thing in the world. In front of her, the girl had pulled her oars onto her lap, folding her hands over them. The perfect posture, An acknowledged, and she would've thought a little more about it if she wasn't currently trying to unscramble exactly what the other thought she already knew. After another eternity of staring, the girl in question finally thought to add a little more. "How the lake isn't already littered with them."

    Oh.

    Ooooh.

After a quarter of an hour displaying zero interest?! Her current impulse was somewhere between barking out a laugh or screaming at the other, but since she was... An... she kind of just gaped. Like an idiot. How would she know? That was literally forever ago!

  11. She had been growing fidgety — a ridiculously productive fidgety. It was only when she, bored out of her mind from her self-imposed silence, went to idly swipe her fingers down for a pointless scroll through her menu that she realized that she'd spent the past minute or so picking off the small crystal-like fragments from the... "treasure chest" fiasco putting them away. Their agreement hadn't exactly factored in who got which [Gold Star] if the material ended up neglected on the floor of their boat, but it wasn't like Mishiro would mind, right?

    Mishiro really did not mind.

This silence was awkward. This was pathetic. She shouldn't have stopped talking earlier. But wouldn't that make everything worse since the other's disinterest in her was so evident? Did Mishiro just... not like her enough to start a conversation? But then—

"Oh!!" she exclaimed. Involuntarily. Then An remembered and slapped her hands over her mouth. Then she realized it was the strangest of strange gestures to someone who couldn't read her mind and turned red. Maybe she should just give in and keep talking? Teeth chewing on her bottom lip out of frustration, she immediately fixed her gaze to the spread of gold before her eyes.

The "treasure chest" Mishiro had fished up was covered in the same shiny material.

And apparently, all the regular fish her... companion had caught too.

So of course the lake itself would have a couple just floating around. Unable to accept her own inadequacy, the background prop to Mishiro's one-man show stuck her hand in the water.

  12. And then, it was quiet.

Maybe she could have talked more about sweets. Last night, she'd bought some confectioneries she, admittedly, didn't know the name of, and had thought that the cafe girl might be a good person to ask.

But An didn't speak. She cupped her cheeks with her palms, sitting with her knees together. Her silence was a 'I feel like I've talked too much already, so it's your turn to say something now and I'll just keep quiet and wait for it' kind of deal, but as time passed — as moments spent in their rental boat near the shore of the galactic lake turned into little eternities, An's smile started to feel more and more strained.

She felt like an idiot. Peering at the girl whose expression looked like it was made from stone out of the corner of her eye, she mentally bopped herself on the head for expecting an event to change someone's demeanor so much. But, hey, festivals did put everyone in a happy, festive mood, right? It wasn't just her who had been so excited. All around town — in her bright crimson eyes — there had been nothing but smiles.

  13. Reason for being late: she didn't know how to tie her yukata.

...Or the sash thingamajig that went around the garment's waist? That was certainly a part of a yukata, but was it called any different?

An knew she had her answer somewhere in the back of her mind, clumped with other bits of info she dubbed 'fun, but kind of useless' — her favorite category — but at the moment, her thoughts were simply muddled with a confused mix of wonderment and twice the usual jitters. Clothes like these were just so tight and impossible. How did the others do it? Her steps were never long in the first place, but the mere feeling of a 'restriction' had her doing some sort of awkward shuffle. She wanted to twist around a little more in her outfit, maybe find that fit that was just comfortable for her, but when she found that she was approaching the edge of the festivities, the girl forced her hands to her sides. A deep breath; maybe you'll get used to it.

A gentle-looking sort of man with a yellow cursor looked at her flailing attempts at maintaining any sort of grace and gave an approving nod.

    Wait, what?

"A fine yukata for the occasion." Oh, the yukata. Saved by the very root of her problems! Around the NPC's stall were racks of fabric and clothing, and colorful accessories to match. Its opinion had some authority, if it weren't already proven by how well the entity wore the traditional Japanese garb. An managed a grin. She did like her yukata's pattern. It called to her mind the image of flowers blooming in the midsummer dusk. "I’m sure we can find something that might complement your attire," the man added when he noticed her staring. “How about it? Free of charge, just for tonight.”

Duh-oh. As nice as the thought was, she shouldn't be calling attention to herself while she still lacked any sort of familiarity with her outfit. "Thank you, b-but... maybe later?"

An was out of there in a jiffy!

She didn't know how long she wandered about. Yellow and crimson lights strewn from one roof to the other passed overhead, cheers and laughter abound. Moving on from a line of game stalls, An stopped by one of the less popular stall, her bright smile mirroring its keeper's. The first days of festivals were always lively, if a little chaotic, and she steered away from the more popular attractions. Long lines were no fun! Especially for someone who was alone.

Maybe she'll get a shot at that rental boat when the excitement had calmed a little...

    (╥﹏╥)

She was fumbling a little less with her gait when she passed by an enclosure.

    Are those... magpies?

Nearby, a woman set down her guitar. "A go for you?" It tilted its head toward the larger cage. A closer look at yielded dozens of shiny little items scattered within. An was immediately hooked.

She put away her snacks. "Tell me how to play!"

Unfortunately, even the bird keeper's concise explanation wasn't enough to circumvent the initial clumsiness. It was all down to dumb luck, but An still thought to mull over her options as she was led to the emporium. The NPC had left the choice up to her — and the later steps weren't any easier for a total beginner, so while she still had some degree of control over her chances of succeeding the challenge, she should take advantage of it now.

    One problem though.

    They all looked the same.

"Um." An shifted her feet. She tried to look at the enclosure from another angle, but quite unexpectedly, it didn't turn her into a bird expert like Senpai was. After a pause long enough for the NPC to fall into the idle animation of walking to the other end of the stall's front and then back, An pointed. "That one?"

A small hatch was flipped open and the bird she'd randomly chosen hopped onto her index finger. Scarlet eyes widened, warmth blooming in her chest at the sight of the little creature staring back at her. Gingerly, she brought her hand closer to her face.

The magpie did a little flit with its wings, inching down her finger to rest on the side of her hand, and chirped.

Aaaaaaa ( ≧Д≦)!!! Her heart was melting! It's SO CUTE!!

It was with much reluctance and also having completely forgotten to give instructions that An let the bird leave its perch. She watched, hands clasped over her chest in anticipation, as the familiar took a pouch into its beak and flew back to her. She extended her hand when it reached her and it deposited a little package. The magpie stayed long enough for An to gently stroke its feathers as a reward, then returned to its keeper.

She left the stall with a smile.

Low-tier reward... but maybe one of the best things to remember Tanabata by.

  14. Holy carp. This girl is really fishing up materials like there's no tomorrow—

But of course there would be a tomorrow. The entire point of fishing up materials was to use them, right? Really, the point was, An couldn't think of a better analogy to express how she felt as she watched Mishiro plop four little fishes onto the floor of their boat. In comparison, she was feeling a bit inadequate, sitting silently with a damage potion in her hand.

How did you even manage to hook four?!

"Y-you aren't planning to turn them into coffee, right?" An asked, if only to fill in the silence.

She thought she would have rather taken a look of condescension over the vapid stare that met hers. Because then she would've explained that it was a bit of a joke, right? That it was a misunderstanding they could laugh at? But Mishiro's eyes were grey in every sense of the word, and An tried to ignore the way her insides twisted a little as she forced a polite smile.

  15. No one laugh, okay?

But she’d thought: maybe Mishiro would look pretty in a yukata. Maybe the quiet girl wanted to make use of this Tanabata as an opportunity to make up for the long silences they spent in their respective corners whenever one visited the other’s shop – an idea An was very much in agreement with. Maybe… since the rather formally-worded message she received in an ungodly hour in the morning that sent her over the moon with excitement anyway– mentioned taking a rental boat out to the Lake of Reflection–

    Eeeeee!

Terrible reality came crashing down on the daydreaming girl, however, when Mishiro showed up in an open-front hoodie and shorts. All black. Arms folded, a store-bought kitsune mask hanging from a loop in her belt in the laziest attempt of conforming to the theme that she had possibly ever seen, the girl met An– and her flower-printed yukata. and the bright red ribbon holding her fancy updo together – with an expression of disbelief. And she realized that they weren't out to play around and have fun like she'd expected.

“Do you want us to find somewhere you can change?”

Says the one dressed like a bloody hooligan in the middle of Tanabata

As she followed, An tried not to look like she was visibly wilting.

    (-_-);

But the lake was pretty. And very unexpectedly, Mishiro knew how to row a boat. Now dressed in combat-appropriate clothing, An gingerly leaned a little to the side so she could catch better sight of the lanterns the players on the other boats were floating out to join the rest already in the middle.

“Oh, look! Now I know why this place isn’t littered with lanterns yet–”

    THUNK.

Side to side. The boat rocked even harder than before and An squeaked, clinging onto the sides for dear life. She knew she came along to protect the cafe girl in case something jumped out at them from the waters, but maybe the GiRL WHO's prOBabLy neveR bEEn On a blOODY rOWboat BeFoRe CAN't last A MiNUtE wHEN thIngS STarT GeTtiNg fUnky.

    “An.”

    “Y-yes?!”

    “Can you open it?”

It was only when the boat stopped rocking that she pried her eyes open to a concerned Mishiro and… a crate. Well, a treasure chest. Already?! And as the other disentangled glimmering gold fragments from the seaweed and tossed the litter back into the lake, she revealed a padlock. Gulp. An fished out one of five keys from her pocket and nearly flinched back as she threw the lid open.

Let’s just say that crates weren’t exactly waterproof.

  17. A… Another reroll–

As much as An loved the feeling of having the shiny, shiny gold ticket between her fingers and a very pretty girl staring at her eagerly, to add, the merchant had to wonder if her previous luck with NIGHT's DoT greatsword would sway her luck the opposite way. "Flame Aura. I see! I have the counterpart myself," she spoke casually, as if to delay the actual rolling to the last possible second.

"I-I'll try my best...!" Heat seemed to crawl up her cheeks at the kimono-clad player's words (she couldn't possibly mean it though?), and her obvious want for a single enhancement in a pool of... ten-something... would've had An tempted to do some of her typical gacha rituals had the other not chosen to wait inside her shop.

So without much ceremony, the merchant used the item.

    It went poof.

And the polygonal fragments arose to form the results window for both players to see.

  20. [06/29/2020]

Two customers and a message from Senpai, all after a week of zero activity. Wowzer. Just as she was starting to miss having some business! An exchanged pleasantries as she made quick work of the purchase from the blonde with the cute speech habit before looking down at the weapons she’d divvied into two piles: one for the Perfects, and one for the Rares.

Not that she really needed to– but there was always something about NIGHT’s requests that intimidated her into keeping at least a basic level of organization. If she wasn’t coming in with large packs of unidentifieds and junk sale requests… she was brining in handfuls of tier 3.

Weren’t they super hard to get or something?

An had a feeling she’d screw everything up if her noob T1 hands so much as touched their clouded surfaces–

Oh, there it was. They were all junk sales.

“So so sorry about this one!” Embarrassed, she’d only trade back a small amount of col when NIGHT came by again. “They were so rare and pretty, too…”

  21. [quest: Worn Out Welcome]

"Human! I'd advise you to stop intruding upon our lands--"

    "Accel Stab!"

--And the Dark Elf encounter was concluded by your local ditzy merchant's lethal poke. Everyone go home.

Befuddled whispers through wavering mists and foliage and dozens of retreating steps indicated that the rest of the elven patrol did indeed decide that the best strategic option was to go... farther home.

"Uwaaa... that's it?" In stark comparison, An almost looked dismayed. She snagged a leathery material from the cloud of pixels that arose from the unfortunate initiator's remains, turning it about curiously in her hands until she found the button that brought up its item window. Red eyes glimmered in amazement at her loot; it was almost as good as finding a unique! "Hey." An waved it around for her company to see. "This one dropped a quest item I haven't seen before!"

'Skirmish' aside, the silver-haired fencer was in a brighter mood than usual today. There was a cheerful quality to her voice that didn't wane even when they mayyybe got a little lost in that maze of a forest earlier, and when they finally-- finally-- reached the edge of the mists after a longer walk than usual (not that her present company would know? not now at least? (・д・)'), she went a few steps ahead and spun around.

    "We're here!"

Their destination was a large European-styled house situated beside a crystal blue lake. Neat lines of coffee and herb plants occupying the space between them and the building waved gently in the warm afternoon breeze, and from where they stood, the pleasant little cafe's interior was visible through--

    Wait, where was the entrance?

An turned back around and squinted.

Goodbye fanfare. They'd come through the back.
