Heavy footfalls squelched in the mud as Oscar approached Mari’s prone form. She was a pitiful sigh, face down in the grime with the remnants of her battle lingering on her frame. Oscar had been twice-notified. Once by Mari herself, once by his hounds. His hounds lingered still, at the fringes, out of sight. Redemption was a wall that stood between Orange Players and their hopes of rejoining society. To put their past behind them and move forward. It was, quite literally, the jailer of the damned. Their final arbiter.
But Redemption had a fatal flaw. It equated might with righteousness. There were many who had been spared Oscar’s blade that could not quite pass muster when it came to this boss. They retained the symbol of their sin, even if they had moved past the person they were before. Forever afflicted with their stigmata. Never to be forgiven.
Oscar approached Mari as she lay prone. He wondered what was going through her head. He squatted down, his hands hanging limply between his knees.
“You lost,” Oscar said, deliberately pouring salt in the wound. “Happens.”
Redemption had tested her might. Oscar would test her conviction. Of the two, only one mattered.
“You gonna cry about it? That doesn’t sound like the Mari I know.”
He let his words linger in the air, remained silent so that the daggers could truly sink in. Oscar was not one to kick someone while they were down. But -
“Do you really think you belong here?”
There was one situation where he would.
“Face-down, sucking mud, looking like a pathetic sack?”
Sometimes, people just needed a kick in the pants.
“When are you gonna get mad about it?”
And sometimes, it didn’t matter if they were already down.
“On your feet, Mari. You’re better than this.”

“but i’d like it to be kept a secret, if you would. it would mean a lot to me… and her.”
Well that certainly sounded ominous.
At first glance, Oscar thought that - perhaps - an NPC’s wander distance had brought one close to them. Only at the first glance, though. The way she sidled up to NIGHT and looked at the two of them with intent was strange. Was this her plus one? NIGHT confirmed it in short order, in word and in action. Oscar tilted his head to the side, watching as his friend stood arm-in-arm with an NPC. Body language invoked comfort with one another. There was a nervous charge in the air.
There was a point in time when Oscar would have found it all offensive. Railed about how NPCs weren’t real, how NIGHT was wasting her time and giving no thought to the future. When they made it out, she wouldn’t be able to take her lover with her, after all. But now, all he could think about was how long they had been a thing. Had their relationship existed even as far back as Gabrandr? Gabrandr and Oscar’s enraged speech, to be more precise.
But what did it matter?
Who would it help if Oscar pointed out the obvious?
Much as he didn’t want to see this thing end in tears for his friend, what mattered most were her feelings in the moment. He would not cast a pall of doom over a relationship that seemed to content her. In fact, he wouldn’t remark on it at all. Oscar latched onto her follow-up question.
“The Ladonian night sky is absolutely to die for,” Oscar said. “I like to play on the airships here. Fun to pretend to be a sky pirate and all that. And one day, I ran late and I got to see just how clear everything is. My first thought was how much I wanted Cordelia to see it.” He offered NIGHT’s companion a soft smile. “It’s incredibly romantic. So one thing led to another and I decided to open a fancy flying restaurant.”
Oscar had another reason for calling NIGHT out here, but they’d talk shop after their meal. Right on cue, as the sun began to sink lower under the horizon, Oscar’s ship sailed into port. It stopped right at the dock, hovering as it waited on its future passengers. Upon the main deck were several small, circular tables. Each only had two chairs. Each was the perfect distance away from the others for hushed conversations not to carry. White table cloths, golden candelabras, and even a string quartet off in the corner.
Outside of the musicians, there was no one else on deck. No sommelier, no maître d'. It was clearly still waiting for something important. A maiden voyage, to start. “I’ll be your server for the evening,” Oscar said with a grin. “And your cook. And the wine guy. I haven’t hired any staff yet.” He gestured toward the table in the center. “Shall we?”
-
A working heart-to-heart, indeed. Oscar certainly appreciated Jomei’s input. Rather than continue down the path of liquoring him up, he instead turned to the espresso maker behind him. “You really are a class act, Jomei,” Oscar said as he busied himself with preparations. His hands moved deftly, swiftly. It always struck him as strange that two different cooks could produce two entirely different flavors. There was a woman in town that could make a killer cup of coffee. Oscar’s wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. But he’d come to realize that different techniques made all the difference. Sure, he could press a button and make whatever he wanted. But it seemed as if the time and effort and care that you spent on something just made it taste better.
Cardinal was strange in that regard.
“Old Oscar was an asshole,” he admitted as he set the machine to drip. He turned around, leaning against the counter on his hands. “Didn’t really think too much about how people felt. The shit people needed just to get out of bed in the morning. I really thought that the people who let the NPCs tug at their heartstrings were just blind. Fuckin’ lost the plot and all that.”
And he still did. But he worked so hard to keep everyone safe. Physical safety was simply not enough. He would settle for nothing less than the total package.
He gestured vaguely at his surroundings. “It’s really the point of all of this. People need shit like this. Something they can use to break up the monotony of the day-to-day. Give ‘em a little taste of life outside so they can hope to truly experience it again one day.”
Oscar turned around again, quickly cleaning the machine and setting the other cup to brew. He’d not really expected to talk this much. But it was nice, being able to get the thoughts in his head out and into the air. He waited for this one to finish, a moment of silence amidst the soothing guitar in the background. And when it did, he placed both of the cups onto a saucer and returned to the bar, sliding one over to Jomei.
Oscar took a sip. Then a breath. Then he placed his cup down upon the saucer with a soft clink of porcelain.
“I haven’t really told anyone my plans, but I think I’m retiring from the Frontlines. It’s not where I’m the most use. I’ve got more money than I could ever spend and more people that owe me favors than I can count. In a Raid, I’m just one more dps. We’ve got up and comers that can easily fill my role. But out here I’m one of just a few people who can actually make shit like this happen.”
Oscar took another sip from his cup. “Of course, I’ll come if called. But it just isn’t my priority anymore. I wanna give people something to live for. Keep ‘em off that edge and their hopes focused on the future. It was a mistake to think that we could just blaze through these Raids and assume everyone would be just fine. They gotta make to through the other side with their mental intact.”
He lifted one finger, pointing it at the ceiling and then to Jomei in an exaggerated gesture. “Which is where you come in. I’m terrible with names. What the fuck do I call this place?”

Jomei didn’t know what to say, Oscar didn’t know what to expect. Seemed like they both had the same idea. But Oscar kept silent, letting Jomei piece the words together. As the ginger spoke, Oscar slowly sipped at his drink. There were a few times where he wanted to butt in, but he didn’t. It was a hard thing to be this upfront. Oscar preferred the “rip the band-aid off” approach, but sometimes it went a little sideways.
He was glad this wasn’t one of those times.
And he was glad that, at the end of it all, Jomei didn’t have any hard feelings.
“None whatsoever,” came Oscar’s reply as he placed his half empty glass down on the table. “I wanted you to hear it from me, before anyone else.”
“I can’t bring myself to apologize for it,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind me saying it. But Lessa is, objectively speaking, an absolute bombshell. You’d have to be blind not to see it. However-” Oscar grabbed another bottle from the wall, setting it down on the counter. He picked up a cocktail stirrer, tapping the edge of Jomei’s glass with it.
“Yay or nay on adding that to the menu? Call this a working heart-to-heart,” he said quickly.
He busied himself with mixing another drink. Limes and mint in a wide glass complete with a little umbrella and a lime wedge for garnish. “I don’t make the best mojito, but I don’t see a whole lot of bartenders. Where was I?”
Oscar straw-tasted the cocktail, tossing the straw away and drumming his fingers on the countertop as his face twisted in thought.
“Ah, right. Can’t apologize for going for it, but I will apologize for the scene. At least how it made you feel. There were a whole lot of heightened emotions during that duel. But I do hope watching me get stabbed in the dick - twice - for my audacity helped just a little bit. Hate to think I took a hit like that and no one benefitted.” He smiled warmly. Perhaps the only time he was happy to take a low blow like that.
There was a moment of silence. Oscar leaned against the counter, enjoying the soft music in the background. Finally, he let out a sigh.
“I have friends, but I don’t really keep confidants.I count myself lucky that Lessa fills that role. There was a time when I kept people at arm’s length. I think I told her that I didn’t want her bleeding heart dripping on my shoes. I wasn’t the best version of myself back then,” Oscar confessed. “I don’t know how much she’s told you - if anything - about my extracurriculars.” How many names I’ve put on the wall. “But I don’t want to be the old version of myself. I’ve come to like this Oscar very much. So I’m hoping I can count you amongst those people I put my confidence in. And I totally get if the wound’s too fresh or you aren’t feeling it. But the lover of my best friend should be my best friend too, you know?”

Time to be on his spongebob shit. Seeing Belregor charging up his big fuck-off attack, Oscar quickly dug another hole. It worked the last time so it stood to reason that it would work now. As he dug, he looked over at the concert. It was a bit too Latin-y. Voices were a bit to male. He could see why. Lysette and her girls had been completely upstaged by some lemonade mother fucker. A shame, but everything seemed to be going to hell in a hand basket anyway.
He quickly finished his hole, rolling into the wet sand and packing it around him. And then he saw someone landed a Freeze on Belregor, cancelling his big fuck-off area of effect attack. But what was he supposed to do? He was already half buried. Oscar had dug a perfectly good hole and goddamn it, he was gonna get his mileage out of it.
So he quickly covered himself with sand and just chilled for a second.
-
Oscar saw the door open before he heard it. Or rather, he saw the bright light that surged into the building upon his guest’s ingress. He didn’t like the look, light behind shed on his den of depravity. He made a mental note to add a foyer or something. Double doors. No one liked the light shone upon their darkness, after all. He swiveled his head, greeting Jomei with a smile. He’d showed up quicker than Oscar had expected. Not good, really. He’d barely had the time to think of what he was going to say.
Direct approach then.
“I’ve run out of things to spend money on,” Oscar admitted with a shrug. “So we’re going with flights of fancy disguised as philanthropy. How is that rapier treating you, by the way?”
It was… awkward. He’d never had nearly as much trouble speaking plainly. He had to force the words out. Perhaps it would be best to pretend it had never happened. Move on and let the past be the past. But, Oscar vaguely remembered seeing Jomei in the stands at the tournament. Really, it couldn’t have been easy watching another man ragdoll the object of his affection.
So of course it would be awkward. His intended topic was nothing but. Even so, it was equally important. Oscar has all but pushed Lessa into Jomei’s arms. He would never forgive himself if she got her heart broken over a misunderstanding. Oscar would never apologize for the physical. But he understood that he was in the minority in that regard.
“I do. I’m struggling with a name. But we can get to that later,” Oscar said, beckoning for Jomei to follow. To the opposite end of the room, Oscar stepped behind the bar. It was the most important part. A wall of spirits of different colors - illuminated by red light - was arrayed behind him. Oscar tapped his chin, looking up at them thoughtfully. Finally, he settled on a particular bottle and pulled it from the shelf.
He turned back around, setting two glasses in front of him. “Drinks menu first,” he said as he dropped two sugar cubes into each glass. He grabbed a bottle from the bar, spinning it over the back of his hand. Clearly, Oscar knew what he was doing. Three dashes into the first glass. He looked up with a wide grin.
“Little known fact -” he paused, adding another trio to the second glass. “I was a bartender in college.” He punctuated his statement by spinning the container in his palm before placing it down. He reached under the bar, producing an orange and a knife.
“More known fact,” Oscar said as he carved a small bit of the rind off of the orange. He dropped one into each glass before shifting his gaze up. “Got closer than you might think to sleeping with your girl.”
Of course he would have the grace of a bull in a china shop.
But he wouldn’t be so disrespectful as to pussy foot around the subject either.
So he used the time just after the balloon popped to finish their drinks. Muddling the sugar and the oranges, adding the rum and ice. Oscar pushed the glass over toward Jomei before bringing his own up to his lips.Another disappointment. It wasn’t as good as his adoptive father’s. And the Major wasn’t here to tell him exactly how he fucked up an Old-Fashioned. With a scowl, Oscar set his glass down on the bar. He leaned against it on his palms. Perhaps a bit to blase given the bomb he’d just dropped. Oscar continued.
“And I’m telling you because I know you saw what went down in the ring. And I don’t know how much she told you about the talk we had after,” he said. The temptation wore him down. The drink was still good - just not what he wanted. He took another sip and offered Jomei a shrug. “I don’t want you thinking I’m praying on your downfall or that I’m just waiting for you to fuck up. My little black book is a little too full for that incel shit. But, more importantly, I don’t want you to think I’m a threat. Just a wingman who got a little too close to the sun.”
-
Construction.
It seemed like that was all he did nowadays. Col flowed through his hands like water through a sieve. No matter how much he earned, he never seemed to have much in the way of liquid cash. It was okay though. It was all for a good cause. People needed a place to unwind. More than that, they needed a place to express their desire. It was easy to forget here. Between the ones and the zeros, passion was a rare indulgence. For most, of course.
Oscar didn’t struggle expressing his passions.
For good or bad, he wore them on his sleeve. Declared his intentions proudly - whether it be with a woman or with a monster that simply needed to be killed. Or a monster that needed the chance to be redeemed. He put much and more of himself into everything he did. Each piece was an expression of some facet of himself. Be it his shop - a greasy spoon that represented his humble start. His airship, his wagon. Symbols of his innate whimsy. Or his newest venture, simple romance.
Newest, other than this one.
He stood in a nearly completed den that screamed sin. Plush sofas and red velvet ropes cordoning off dark corners. Reds and blacks that stood in stark contrast to one another. It invoked opulence. Decadence. Desire. There was no room for whimsy or humility or romance here. A den of vice and pleasure.
At least, that’s what he wanted it to be.
It was all a part of the human condition. Shadows can’t exist without the light, yada yada. But the light needed shadows for disparity. How can one see how brilliant and pure something is without first knowing the dark? And people needed an outlet. A place where they could collide, vent the pressure. Blow off some steam.
That was all well and good, of course.
If Oscar could think of a fucking name.
So he stood in the center of the establishment, scrolling through his contacts for someone who might help those synapses fire. Or, perhaps someone who might do the heavy lifting for him. Mari? No. There was too much history and she was far too taken. Night? Also no. He’d given her the restaurant. His eyes lit up as they fell upon a single name.
Jomei would do.
They’d barely spoken. Both in the same orbit, but neither really taking the time to speak. They were, at one point and for the slightest of moments, in direct competition. What almost was. A moment that he let slip through his fingers. “Let” probably wasn’t the best term. He felt a spike of something in his chest. The mere thought felt wrong. He didn’t “let” @Lessa go. He just didn’t fight when she finally decided what she wanted.
And he couldn’t be happier.
But the close brush brought certain awkward storm clouds over the shared friendship. It had been hard enough to coax Lessa’s desires into the light. He’d not leave room for any crossed wires or misunderstandings. Oscar was nothing if not crystal fucking clear.
And, really, who else would he want to show a new night club to than the guy who fought with a fucking violin? So the message was sent out:

So that was it. The Orange Players. He could understand why she'd be afraid of them. Truth be told, he was rather desensitized to the whole cursor color thing. It didn't really register as a factor until Alinta visibly jumped and dashed behind him.
"Why the fuck are there so many orange people here?"
"They're people too," Oscar said. The irony wasn't lost on him, even if Alinta didn't have that particular context. "They haven't drawn their weapons. Be kinda stupid to do so with half the Frontlines milling about. And besides, they're just having fun. I don't really feel like people are defined but the color of their cursor. People make mistakes, y'know?" He shifted to the side, draping his arm over her shoulder and bending down low.
"Mistakes like sending a message to 'Osdcar' and then getting mad at me for not getting it," he stated with a grin.
Before he could continue, he heard Abellio bellowing out over the crowd. Something about someone bringing beer to the party. He rose back to his full height, scanning the crowd until he found the table that Warren and Abellio were milling about around. There was a new face. A new person to welcome. He cleared his throat and called out over the crowd.
"FEED THAT MAN, HE'S A GODDAMN TREASURE!"
He raised his can, acknowledging @Reytac over the crowd. The Razor had serious competition.
-
@Mari to the rescue. Cool, cool. Oscar didn’t want things to melt down, so he appreciated the intervention. It was nice, really, to see such an eclectic mix of Player cursors. Greens and Oranges mixed about as well as oil and water. So of course there would be big feelings in play. Even still.
“Oh, I’ve met @Ceres. I get it. Proportionate responses though. Call it a difference of opinion, but maybe we don’t sling our drinks all willy-nilly?” Oscar’s eyes shifted over to Corvo, then back to Mari. His words weren’t those of chastisement, neither were they particularly hostile. Disappointed? Maybe. “We can hold ourselves down better than that.”
Oscar dismissed himself with a nod, pulling a towel out of the air as he walked past Ceres. Wordlessly, he dropped it onto her head and stepped into the crowd. As he did, Oscar was approached by raven-haired male giving him props for the party. When he questioned how this was all possible, Oscar just cracked a smile.
“Beats the hell out of me, dude. I’m kinda expecting Cardinal to just despawn everything any second now. So get it in while you can get it in, my guy,” he said to @Lium.
He clapped the man on the back and meandered over to the Trackers’ table. Oscar didn’t show his face much around HQ so it was nice to see everyone all in one place. He’d not realized that the Guild was so expansive now. Seeing everyone mingling - smiles on their faces as they enjoyed what he had on offer - did make all of the effort worth it. As he sat down, he caught the tail end of the conversation.
“Is it true that you rank highest among the frontliners?”
He let out a short laugh. @NIGHTwas certainly getting a crazy amount of attention. In his experience, that wasn’t really something she liked. Still, he couldn’t resist the urge to pile on.
“Yep,” Oscar cut in, raising a can of mystery soda. “I was both excited and terrified of taking her on in the tournament. I’m good, but -” Oscar took a long drink from his can. “I think she’s better. Fun fact, I’ve known her since she was a lowbie. If there’s any evidence I’ve been getting lazy, it’d be her.” @Pollux
Oscar sat there for a while, enjoying the rising din of conversations and laughter. Lysette had the dance floor moving and a few people were trickling in. He scanned the crowd, equal parts taking it all in and looking for trouble. One thing stuck out to him like a sore thumb. Downing his can, he tossed it over his shoulder. Upon contact with the ground, the item shattered into dust. He rose from his seat and smoothed out trunks.
“Duties of the host never end. I’ll need to plan something a bit more private just for us, I think. Excuse me,” he said with a smile.
Oscar stepped away for the second time - something that he figured would be a recurring trend. He made his way through the crowd, trying his best not to be disruptive. It was rather difficult, what with being an actual giant. He stopped for a moment, finding someone with an even more imposing presence. Closed metal helmet and a speedo. Sick.
"YES, THE RAZOR APPROVES OF THIS DIVINE MEATS OF A WORTHY FOE. MORE OMEGA-3 FOR THE RAZOR." @Razor
Oscar clapped him on the back with a bright grin. “HELL YEAH BROTHER! DIG IN! ENJOY!”
The Razor. Coolest dude at the party, by far. It wasn't even close.
Finally, Oscar made his way back over to @Alinta. He didn’t do much, merely handing her another drink (which he kept in his pockets, apparently) and giving her a slight chuckle. “You know, I’ve seen lemons less sour. I’m gonna call it a personal failure if you don’t enjoy yourself.” That was true. Oscar didn’t want to see anyone with a sour expression on their face at his party. Corvo needed checked, but he assumed that once he found his people, he would eventually unwind. Alinta though. Seemed like she’d been a bit uncomfortable from the get-go. That simply would not do.
Oscar pulled a can from thin air again and cracked the top. He brought the can up to his lips as he leaned against a tiki pole. “Wild you never reached out-” he took a sip of his drink. “I get the quest ended a bit sideways, but I thought we had a vibe going on. What’s up?”

Lag spike. Of course. It always happened in the middle of the boss raid. Flickers of static across his vision, frozen in place. It would be the death of him one of these days. But that wouldn't be today. Quickly recovering from the intermission, he flung his sword at Belregor once more. And once more he found it careening off of that black barrier in a shower of sparks and flying back in his direction. At least, it didn't make a unicorn horn this time. His blade sank into his leg. With a soft grunt, Oscar wrenched the blade free. When was this fight going to be over? It seemed as if it was lasting an eternity and Oscar didn't know how many more times he was willing to take his own sword to the face without just up and rage quitting. Wouldn't that be a sight? He decided to stare at a blade of grass instead. Why was that here? On a beach?

"Well don't you look dapper?"
As if he stepped straight from the aether, Oscar appeared at Night's side. He looked her up and down, a small grin of satisfaction in his face. Truth be told, he could barely contain his excitement. His experiments with what Cardinal did or didn't allow had borne much fruit. The man loomed over her, trying his best not to sway to and fro as they waited at the dock. His pet project had not yet arrived. Final tests and all that. The sun was setting on the horizon, shadows lengthened as the skyport was awash in the deepest orange. He looked around, scanning the crowd for anyone that might fit the description of the plus on he specifically asked his friend to bring.
"So where's your date?"
Straight to business, as per usual. Truth be told, he wanted to see who Night spent her free time with. Friend of a friend, and all that. Or more intrigued by the insight and drama of it all. There was no small part of him that was happy to bear witness to his friends' joy. In the simple times and on the romantic occasions. The latter was, of course, the entire reason for his summons.
"I'm opening a restaurant," he said suddenly. Another one, he didn't say at all. His greasy spoon of a shop was something that had become synonymous with him. But that didn't mean that he couldn't branch out. Give people a proper dining experience. "It's gonna show up any minute. Thought you might enjoy getting a special invite before it opens to the public."

Oscar was a simple man.
Was it too much to ask to cook a building-sized crab and throw a party for his friends without some child throwing a tantrum?
Even over the clamor, Corvo's voice was clear as day. Oscar's head pivoted in the man's direction just in time to watch the blonde throw his drink into Ceres' face. There were only a few reasons to make a move such as that and Oscar couldn't see any shot pets anywhere on the beach. He let out a heavy sigh. There was always someone who wanted to be the center of attention. That honor belonged to the crab, frankly.
But if Corvo wanted the attention, fine.
He could have it.
Oscar dismissed himself from his Guildmates without a word. He would hope they would be understanding of the situation. It was rather hard not to bear witness to the commotion, after all. He would have preferred to play the passive host. Let everyone mingle and eat as they would while he just sipped a drink in the background. But, of course, it falls to the host to regulate.
"Learn some fuckin' manners, and then go bother someone else."
"Kinda weird to be talking to yourself in front of God and everybody, son," Oscar said as he stepped smoothly between Corvo and Ceres. "Wild to be talking about manners when you're hurling drinks into peoples' faces. Always one dude at the function who hasn't grown out of their terrible twos. Do you have any idea how long this whole thing took me?"
Rhetorical. He held up his hand to stop the man from speaking. "Shut up. Shut the fuck up," he added quickly.
"Months. Twelve hour days, sometimes overnights. And do you know how much this cost?"
Again, a warning glance. He didn't want an answer. The boy had lost his speaking privileges.
"Millions. So you can imagine I would take it personally if any dumb mother fuckers decided to show their ass and send all this straight down the drain. You planning on reimbursing me for a fucked party?" Oscar continued. He was speaking loud enough for the entire beach to hear. Good. "So if you're cool, be cool. Get yourself a drink, eat some food. Don't make me have to come back over here again. This is your one. Everyone gets one, you just burned yours."
-
Oscar was happy to escort Bistro and Night down to the beach. The latter was, of course, rattled. Most people were when Oscar suddenly ragdolled them and launched himself into the blue. But the dress code must be enforced. No black tracksuits at his party.
"Thanks for coming, you guys," Oscar said as they leisurely strolled down the beaten path. "I've got a big surprise for everyone when we get back."
And he did. He was incredibly excited about it. Oscar could have thrown a party like this at any time. But he didn’t simply because of the fact that he wanted it to be special. Memorable. He wanted to do something that no one else had really done before. As they arrived at the beach, Oscar was pleased to see the massive crowd that had come to partake of the feast. Though that came with the headache of him needing to be a good host.
“Well, this is me. You guys enjoy, I’ve gotta go be a social butterfly.”
He dismissed himself from the women with a wave and marched up to the centrally-placed skiff and hopped on deck to place himself above the crowd. Lysette tossed him a Performer crystal and deactivated the one playing music. His voice filled the void in short order.
“WHAT IS UP PARTY PEOPLE!”
His voice rang out, amplified like a microphone thanks to the crystal he held in front of his face.
“Are we having a good time? Food good? Fantastic. Now, first off, I appreciate everyone coming out to my little get-together,” Oscar said. He almost chuckled at the irony. There was nothing “little” about this “get-together.”
“Second, I know we’ve got some uh… citrus colored cursors attending today. They’re cool. We’re all here to enjoy the party, so let’s keep it clean. Keep the weapons in the scabbards.”
It would be an abject failure if anyone failed to enjoy themselves.
“And finally, I’ve got a bit of a surprise. Little bit of an ulterior motive. I’m sure you guys have clocked the massive pot and I’m sure you’re wondering what’s inside. I had two reasons for getting everyone together. First, sometimes we need to cut loose. And second, you’re my guinea pigs. Witnesses? Whatever.”
Oscar gestured up towards the airship. Four hooked ropes slowly descended from the vessel. They latched themselves onto the pot in the four cardinal directions and began to slowly lift it from the fire.
“I’ve always wondered whether I could cook a boss. Grandmaster Cook, pretty infamously so. It got me thinking though. Rather than go round and around about the hows and whys, here’s Sand’s Claw!”
The pot shuddered as it swung over the final empty space next to the fire. Oscar opened his inventory, activating an item he’d prepared just for this occasion. A massive pile of rice and vegetables and prawns manifested under the pot. And the pot itself began to crack. Golden light shone out from the fissures that spiderwebbed across its surface. And then it burst. The massive crab fell upon the bed of food, crowning it like a king. Cooked to perfection, its shell was bright red and steaming. In the distance, the Sand’s Claw - the still living version - that Shiina was riding witnessed the sight with horror. Or, at least, Oscar assumed it was horror. It might have been considering cannibalism.
“We kill a lot of bosses, but we don’t eat ‘em. Figure you guys would enjoy the catharsis. Dig in!”
Oscar hopped off the stage and the music filled the silence again. As his feet hit the ground, he took a deep breath. What host didn’t greet his guests personally?
He grabbed a drink from the cooler and flipped the top off of it before taking a swig. Dr. Pepper. Fantastic. As he was by the cooler, he noticed @Alinta. He’d not seen much of her since their quest a few weeks ago.
“Well there’s a surprise,” he said as he locked eyes with her. “I’m glad you made it, babe.” Oscar made it no big secret that he was checking her out. Third reason, hot girls in swimsuits. “I’ll circle back around, yeah? Gotta buzz around for a bit. You enjoy yourself, got it?”
And there was another blast from the past. Oscar was only just now realizing how many people he knew that he’d not seen in ages. He walked past @Ceres, patting her on the head with a smile. “It’s been ages, glad to see you.
He passed the strange blond. Oscar had no clue who he was. A friend of a friend of a friend? Such was the hazard of a party. Which was fine. That scowl wasn’t. “Don’t look so sour, big pimpin’,” Oscar said with a smile. “The food’s free. And there’s plenty of pretty women to look at. Maybe don’t scare them off by looking so murderous, yeah?”And then he saw his two favorite love birds.
“Scaring the hoes is a cardinal party sin, my dude,” he said to @Corvoin parting.
Oscar stepped up to @Jomei and @Lessa, throwing his arms around their shoulders and pulling them in tight. “I’ll tell you guys a secret,” he whispered. “It’s about goddamn time. Love it.” Oscar would not mourn things that were not meant to be. Especially when he saw how cute they looked with their hair down together.
Okay, that was a lie. He’d mourn, extensively. How could he not?
“Looks like the glue isn’t needed,” he said with a smile. He stepped back, looking Jomei up and down and making no effort to hide the fact he liked what he saw. Oscar took a long sip from his drink and gave them both a bright smile. “A shame, that. You’re gonna be turning heads. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
He paused.
“Do the opposite of what I would do.”
Oscar stepped away. He made his greetings to Khione and Majineko before meeting another familiar face.
@Jevi!" He pulled her into a hug, squeezing her tightly as he spun her around. “It’s been too long! You look amazing, first off. Hope you’ve been doing well. If you need anything, you come find me, yeah?”
Oscar saw the Trackers congregating. But he wanted to welcome his Orange friends. He could see that the man was uncomfortable from a mile away. And he took that personally. As he walked over to them, he dapped up @Raidou in a casual drive-by greeting. “The legend himself has arrived, wonderful,” he said while walking backwards.
@Lancaster He approached the pair sitting under the shade off to the side. “Alright now, son, dress code is strictly enforced,” Oscar said, faux authority coloring his tone. His stern expression quickly morphed into a smile. “Relax, dude. No one’s gonna jump your shit here. I’m gonna see to that personally. Live a little. Let’s stop with the biker cosplay and enjoy yourself. You gotta be dying in all that leather.”
He turned his attention to @Mariwith a slight smirk. “Dangerous and bloody huh? Cute.”
Oscar stuck out his tongue and turned on his heels to join the rest of the Trackers near their table.
“TRACKERS!”
His voice boomed over the beach. “How’s this for a first meet and greet? You guys enjoying the food?”

Well this wasn't good. It wasn't Oscar's first run-in with a big fuck-off Area of Effect attack. Only issue was, he didn't really know how or where to dodge. Everything was inky blackness and he didn't really know right from left. But he did know up from down. And that was enough. Because no matter how much the boss tried to confound his senses with illusion or trickery, he always knew where his feet were planted. In the sand, in this case. It conjured limited memories of the beach. Oscar dropped low, clawing away at the grains. It was an interesting way to do things. Made even more interesting by the fact that he had to operate by feeling alone. But he carved a hole into the wet sand and threw himself inside. And, much like the Looney Tunes of old, quickly packed dirt over himself. The only hope he had was that whatever attack the boss did was only surface level.

"Well you know how I am," Oscar said to Mari. "No half measures, right?"
He ended his question with a wink as Warren approached. He greeted the man with a simple fist bump, nodding appreciatively at the man's efforts. An ice chest of beverages was a worthy thing to sacrifice his taco wagon for. He also picked up on Warren's silent question, deciding to address the elephant in the room. "Today's a truce day. Your status isn't an issue. I imagine you won't be the only Orange Player here. I thought your man was going to show up, for starters." Oscar felt a soft touch on his back. An invisible hand. "Unless, of course, I'm completely wrong about his status. You said dangerous, so I'm just assuming. But tell him he's welcome anyway. I'd love to meet the guy."
He gave her another smile. Unfortunately, his attention was going to be pulled all over the place today. The burden of being a good host, that. His inbox chimed, Bistro and Night. Oscar looked off in the distance, eyes flaring gold as he searched the landscape. Tracked the landscape, really. When he finally settled on his target, he tapped Warren on the shoulder. "Tell Abellio to hold it down while I go grab a couple guests."
And with that, he was gone.
Dashing over to Night, he skidded to a halt. He looked her up and down. Signature tracksuit, normally respectable. Absolutely unacceptable today.
"Oh no, no, no. This won't do. I can understand being swimsuit shy, but this-"
He didn't finish the sentence. He'd already slung her over his shoulder and super hero leaped into the air towards town. Trees and stones and dirt but mere blurs as he crashed and immediately broke into a breakneck sprint. He skidded to a stop, yet again. This time in front of Bistro. He placed Night down on the ground, gesticulating vaguely in her direction.
"Bistro please tell me you have something more appropriate than this."
-
His wallet continues bleeding.
A party. And now a new project since the dust has settled. Since his focus shifted from Raiding to making sure that the people trapped within the game were okay. It was only a brief hiatus. There were those who would take up his mantle no problem. But the professional within him realized that his singular focus did little good. At least, comparatively speaking. He could forge ahead and take on floor after floor after floor. But it did nothing for the people who could not or would not. Those too weak or too frightened. And he held none of it against them.
Quite the opposite. His projects now trended towards a more uplifting approach.
Fine dining on the main deck of an airship. Candlelit dinners under the stars. Tables and chairs placed just far enough away from one another that the patrons could enjoy their whispered conversations under the moonlight. All at cost. All simply for the experience of it all. But his problems were twofold.
He had no customers.
And he had no idea what to christen the vessel. The previous name was stricken. A new one was needed.
But before that, he needed to know whether any of this was a good idea. Whether the experience was worth the expense he poured into it. There were many people whose opinions he respected. He could pick any one of them at random. His first thought was of Jomei and Lessa. But given the circumstances, it might have felt a bit much. Being a wingman was an art form. And in that respect, Oscar was Da Vinci.
So his thoughts went into a different direction. He had no idea whether she had a partner, but he would soon find out.
