<<The Essence of Steel>>

This quest takes place on Floor 4
This quest is repeatable
This RP will not count in the benchmark

Word from Information Brokers speaks of a mysterious Beast Skull found in the far north of the Frozen wasteland of Floor 4. A small party reported having struck the skull with a nearby bone, waking a huge beast in a nearby cave. This monster, identified as <>, was easily equal in health and strength to a Floor Boss, and is said to yield an incredibly rare drop upon death that will allow a player to enhance a single item, improving it's quality by one level.

Requirements:
-At least two [2] Pages (21 or more posts)
- The Snow Beast must be defeated

Snow Beast Information:
<Snow Beast> is a Field Boss and has the following statistics:
HP: 250
Damage per Attack: 160

Special Ability: Partial Phase- Snow Beast will always deal a minimum of 24 damage, even through Armor and Armor Abilities.

Rewards:

  1. Essence of Steel: an incredibly rare monster drop that allows a player to enhance a weapon, armor, or accessory and improve it's quality by one level. (Example, an Uncommon Weapon becomes a Rare Weapon.) Enhanced Gear is eligible for new Item Enhancements and must be approved through the Crafting Item Evaluation Topic.
Note: This item CANNOT change a weapon's Tier. (Example, a Tier 1 weapon becomes a Tier 2).
  2. 1 Skill Point
Parties or Groups are encouraged, though only the player who takes this quest, and uses the Skull to awaken The Snow Beast will receive the <<Essence of Steel>> drop. That means ONLY ONE ESSENCE WILL DROP PER TOPIC.

Recommended Level: 25

"Why am I spending so much time in the snow?" Shield wondered aloud as he attempted to stuff Norbert's clawed foot back in the sweater sleeve of the knit prison he had fashioned for the ornery turtle. "I mean, I get it, but at the same time, there has to be a better floor for this quest to be on."

He knelt in the center of the square by the teleportation plaza, watching as his snapping turtle companion chomped down harmlessly on his hand. He couldn't remember the last time he was so thankful to be in a safe zone. Snow fell softly on all sides of him, making the place feel even more silent than it already was. So much movement without sound seemed a contradiction to the senses. It made the place feel unearthly, as if he was in another world.

It was with a rather unpleasant moment of realism that he remembered that in a lot of ways, that's exactly where he was.

With a clearer head, Teion found herself walking from the edge of Armadillo's safe zone to the teleport gate in the middle of the city. It really was a chore traveling there from Fortaleza whenever she wanted to get anything done outside of her shop, but her fondness of the sub-city made it worth it in her eyes. She wasn't about to waste her col on teleport crystals just to make getting around more convenient. Navigating the desert capital like the back of her hand, the blacksmith reached her destination within minutes. "Teleport: Snowfrost." She said clearly, closing her eyes as a light enveloped her.

She reappeared in the snowy town , once again silently thanking her passive Survival skill for easing the bite of the cold air against her bare skin. Teion hadn't taken more than a couple of steps away from the teleport gate before her eyes fell upon a familiar figure and his turtle. The woman watched for a moment as the familiar gnawed on Shield's hand, but the man didn't seem bothered in the slightest. Teion hesitated a moment, but urged herself forward to walk over to the brunette. Leaning slightly to one side as she came to a stop, Teion stood beside Shield with a few paces between them. "Does he always try to bite you?" She asked with a half-smile.

"If it moves, he tries to bite it," Shield said with a sigh. "I mean, he's a snapping turtle. What else do you expect him to do?"

He slung the creature over his shoulder who took one last snap at the player's hand before retracting its head into the turtleneck of the sweater, only the tip of its beak visible.

"Let's get a move on then," he said, clapping his hands together, which currently only had all of their fingers because they were in a safe zone. "We know the drill, and we've both increased our abilities since last time, I would guess, so this should be a cake walk."

It was like walking to school as a child. The familiar route didn't seem to take quite as long, and before he knew it, he was standing in front of the same ominous structure as before: the odd skull beside the skeletal drumstick that was the beast's summoning method. Even as he swung the bone to 'ring' the makeshift gong, he was already drawing in air. As soon as the beats emerged, he projected his air with such focus and ferocity that it practically forced the snow beast back underground.

"Good luck surviving this time around!" he bellowed. "This fight is going to be much more difficult now!"

Trying to recover from being forced back, the beast tripped over its own front paws and sprawled face first into the snow drifts in the little dry riverbed where its cave branched off.

A small chuckle escaped the woman as he picked up the familiar before they would set out on the path to the quest objective. The animal was odd, but Teion thought their relationship was rather cute. It was unconventional from a perspective of combat, but a tank with a turtle companion was amusingly fitting. When Shield suggested they head out, the blacksmith gave a small nod of agreement and rolled her shoulders as they began to walk.

The two continued down the same path at a similar pace to their first excursion, and for a moment Teion almost felt a sense of deja vu. Grinding repeatable quests was nothing new to her in a gaming sense, but with a real-world environment she imagined the task would begin feeling like a chore even more quickly.

It didn't take long for them to reach their destination and Shield to summon the beast once again. Teion drew her axe and held the weapon closely in front of her while she watched the snowy monster emerge. For a moment, she almost thought the beast had recognized them. Its clumsy movements after Shield initiated combat had her wonder if the poor creature had recalled its demise at their hands just a few days prior. After a small shake of her head to dismiss the silly thought, a smirk grew over the woman's face. "I'll make sure this ends much faster than last time." She said with confidence, the blade of her axe beginning to glow a bright sky blue in response. She charged at the beast, activating the newest sword art in her arsenal and allowing Cardinal to carry her and her weapon through the motions to unleash an attack that dealt over twice the damage she could the last time they had taken the quest. As she disengaged from the monsters range, leaving it with a generous amount of red gashed across its body, Teion smiled with satisfaction. "Skill points well spent!"

With the ferocity of Teion's attack to distract, Shield was able to slip behind the beast and make the most of the advantageous positioning. He brought the blade of his einhander axe down into the creature's spine, sending a spurt of bloody pixels to swirl about the wound. It lost over a third of its remaining health, which was not saying terribly much. It whipped around, but between the two precise strikes, it was disoriented and missed its target outright.

"Some day, you DPS types are gonna have to tell me what it's like to be able to kill the things you fight without grinding for ten minutes," he scoffed with mild amusement.

He held no ill will towards DPS characters, though since it was always more fun to deal the hits than to take them, he would occasionally poke fun at how exhaustingly many of them there were. Still, aside from a half chuckle at his expense with Norbert earlier, he was unsure if he had ever seen the woman laugh before today, so he let that opportunity to have a little fun slide on by.

"Sure," Teion called back after the man's quip. She followed-up on his own critical attack, eyeing the beast's remaining health. 'That should do it.' She decided on the appropriate sword art to finish the creature off, and her blade promptly glowed another bright blue. While Shield had struck at the monster's back, Teion took a couple of quick steps forward to bring down her blade across the side of the beast's face. Her axe opened a wide gash from its pointed ear down to its large jaw. The blacksmith didn't bother to move after drawing her weapon back to her torso; the quest monster only stood before them for another couple of seconds before the system registered its empty health bar and it vanished in a familiar burst of light.

Teion let gravity pull her heavy blade as it swung downward, keeping one hand gripped around the ivory handle as the head of her axe rested against the frozen ground. She shifted her weight onto one leg, leaning casually against the weapon. "I'd prefer that over talking about how much health you lose in a day." Thinking about the job of a tank nearly sent a chill down her spine as she quickly recalled the uncomfortable tingling sensation this game decided to use to substitute the feeling of pain.

As the air cleared between them and the light particles faded and gave way to the dull glow of the snow, Shield relaxed, leaving his state of combat awareness and switching to his looting gear.

"Can something really be missing if it comes right back?" he asked, pointing to where his health bar would be displayed. "It's no big deal. Just part of the game, as they say."

In the dim light from the overcast sky, Shield noticed the faint glow on his shoulder that told him his earring was alight. Glancing around, he spotted something out of place by the entrance of the snow beast's cave. Stepping closed, what had initially appeared to be a fallen icicle revealed itself to be a clear, prismatic crystal. He retrieved the item and stored it in his inventory before turning back to Teion.

"Well, shall we make another dungeon search attempt then?"

She leaned against the support of her axe a few moments longer as the atmosphere of combat faded and left them alone in the calm, snowy landscape. She shifted her weight once more and picked up the weapon to sheath it at her back before tugging lightly at the thin yellow scarf draped across her shoulders. It didn't do much against the cold, but she was fond of it and its stats gave her a slight boost to finding materials. Shield's words had a half-smirk pull at her expression, and before he stepped away to pick up a material of his own, the faint light caught Teion's eye. "Interesting." She mumbled at the item's ability. The game never ceased to amaze her with its nuances and such minor details worked into every aspect of the world.

Admiration aside, Teion focused her attention when Shield addressed her again. "Oh, sure." She replied simply, her boots leaving footprints in the snow as she started back towards Snowfrost. They had finished their objective in nearly half the time that they had spent the last time the pair took on the quest, leaving them with plenty of daylight to head to a higher floor for some more exploration.

The path to and from Snowfrost was becoming almost familial in its sense of familiarity. Not that Shield minded. More familiarity, especially with now higher ranked skills, meant more efficient and rapid quest completion. The less time he needed to spend in the snow, the better. They arrived back in town in record time, and with a calling out of their destination, the teleportation portal transported them up to floor eleven.

"Home sweet home," he thought aloud before making for the safe zone exit.

Since the last endeavor for a dungeon had not been successful, Shield led them down a slightly different route, one that led through more circuitous paths to get to the feet of the mountains.

The path became rugged and more dictated by steep dirt hills rather than forest or river. Along one of the narrow ridges that lined either side of the winding path, Shield spotted a glint. What at first appeared to be a fist sized quarts crystal ended up being a sugar crystal.

"I think these have something to do with the ants that populate this level," he said, rolling his eyes. "It's like being in a weird knock-off of that movie where the dad is a scientist and shrinks his kids down to the size of insects and they get lost in the back yard. Oh, by the way..."

Shield opened a window to transfer an item to his quest companion.

As per usual, Teion traveled in silence for most of the trip. They made their way back to Snowfrost and over to the teleport gate quietly, and before long the party was making its way to the edge of Taft's safe zone. Shield was the first one to speak up after they were a good few minutes into traveling outside of the city. Teion tilted her head slightly at his comment before she recalled the ant soldiers they had faced in a dungeon not long ago. It had been her first combat encounter on the eleventh floor, and even though they had been in the middle of a winding labyrinth where mobs were plentiful, she didn't much care for the design of giant insects wielding spears.

She perked up a bit at his following comment, a small smile growing on her face. "Ahh, I remember that one." She thought aloud. It was so easy to forget something as simple as movies, but the realization of their absence--the absence of all kinds of different things from the real world--quickly had her feeling a brief moment of melancholy. The blacksmith was pulled from her thoughts just as quickly when Shield turned towards her and a trade window appeared in front of her torso. "Hm?" She mumbled, staring at an icon that indicated he was sending her an item. Before she had time to question the action, the trade was marked complete and Teion found herself furrowing her brow in confusion as she opened up her own inventory to find the piece of equipment that had been added. Her finger hovered over the trinket while the interface displayed its stats. "Oh, what?" She glanced to the brunette before materializing the trinket. She held the item up in front of her, the silver charm hanging from the chain she held between her fingers. "Are you sure?" She was used to haggling and transactions, but gifts were something entirely different. She felt odd accepting an item without handing over some col or materials.

"Call it an exchange of services, if you like," Shield said, closing out of his menu with a note of finality. "It's no different than if I were to order something for your shop. Sure, you've been getting rewards, but I've been taking the lion's share for myself."

He took back to the trail before she had a chance to argue the point, and he continued scanning the terrain for anything useful, either materials or an entrance to a generated dungeon.

It was odd adventuring with people who tended to be on the quiet side. He was used to chatterboxes like Beat, and on occasion, Anemone. This was more his speed. While most people would be uncomfortable with the silence, Shield felt it gave him a little more time to breathe. It reminded him of walks he used to take as a kid, usually to and from school or on some scenic detour far off the beaten path, where there weren't other people to talk to, or to expect him to talk.

Teion was left with a small smirk of defeat, leaving Shield with the last word on the exchange. The blacksmith was briefly reminded of the first and only other piece of equipment that had been given to her--Midnight Eclipse, the axe that she had proudly carried with her before crafting her own perfect-quality weapon. The man that had passed the item to her so long ago would probably be surprised to see how much his little influence had affected her. The blacksmith trade that grew to define her in Aincrad was inspired by him, after all.

The pair continued walking in silence as Teion drifted among her thoughts. Shield didn't seem to mind the quiet, and neither did she. Teion would engage in small talk if it was presented to her, but her lack of social finesse typically resulted in blunt responses or a dull, uninterested tone.

The yellow scarf that had rested on Teion's shoulders was strangely absent. She had to swap out her equipment to attach the spider web charm to her weapon, leaving her with some basic vanity gear that looked similar to the light armor in her bags, her crescent moon hairpin, and the axe on her back with the charm dangling off of the bottom of the handle.

Teion hadn't put up any more of a fight over the trinket, so he took it as a settled matter. He hadn't thought about it before, but this was actually the first time he had given a woman a present of any sort since his divorce. He had let lower level players take extra loot when he carried them, but never an actual item that he had bought with specific intent. The more that thought took root in his mind, the more uncomfortable and somewhat upsetting it became to him. He dismissed it, focusing on the task at hand. Despite his discomfort at interacting with such fragile memories, he kept his composure, relying on his ability to remain impassive.

"Note to self: Never think about that awful woman again until I'm out of here and have the chance to fight her for the kids.

Subconsciously, he rubbed the scar that dominated much of the left side of his face. Just as he needed a distraction, he noticed the earring's familiar glow on his shoulder and glanced down at the ground. Right by his foot, he spotted a stone with a reddish yellow vein running up the side of it.

"That looks like ore."

As he picked it up to inspect it, he could confirm that this was indeed some kind of ore, and from the looks of it, gold ore.

The slight motion caught her attention, causing Teion to cast a sideways glance at Shield as his hand rested against his face. For a moment she grew curious if the man was alright, but dismissed the thought after a few seconds. Whether she was mistaken or not, everyone was fighting their own battle here. Teion wasn't about to go around sticking her nose where it didn't belong. At that thought, a soft light brought her attention back to the brunette, her eyes falling upon his earring just before the man stopped to pick up a chuck of ore from the ground. Teion was used to equipment that heightened her perception in some way--she just found that materials became easier to find, or perhaps they spawned more frequently around her when those stats were boosted. An item that triggered a visual cue, however, was still intriguing.

They hadn't made it as far from the city as their last dungeon-hunt, at least not yet. The blacksmith hadn't found much of anything since arriving in Taft, but just as she began to consider her lack of luck the woman spotted a single familiar flower on their path. Sure enough, the system identified the item as a crafting material and Teion promptly pulled the stem from the ground just before it disappeared into her inventory.

Before he had even had a chance to straighten back up, he spotted another hunk of stone just like the first and happily stored both away for later use. It seemed as if his dry spell of material finding was finally beginning to clear up.

"You know, you're one of the few people who doesn't seem to mind silence," he said aloud before continuing along their way towards the base of the mountains. "Usually, people feel the need to fill the silence, but you don't seem to be as concerned with that."

He shot her a sidelong glance. It was not a probing observation, though he let the thought hang in the air for her to comment on if the mood so struck her. He turned his eyes skyward, careful not to tip it back far enough to put his hair within chomping range of the grouchy turtle that was currently swiveling its head around for something within its biting range.

"Hm?" Teion looked over to Shield inquisitively at his comment. "Oh. She thought for a moment about the statement before speaking up again. "Does it bother you?" She had gotten the impression so far that he was a quiet type himself--not necessarily unfriendly, but more just stoic. He seemed to have a pretty fitting personality for a tank build.

After the question left her, Teion thought about what else she could say. That she didn't always used to be so reserved. That she often found herself getting caught up in her own thoughts. That she had always been bad at striking up a conversation anyway. No matter how she tried to word things in her head, she just didn't think they would come out right. So, rather than following up with any kind of explanation or other comments, Teion turned her attention back to the path ahead. Just in time, the woman spotted a reflection of light glinting off of an ore near her feet.

"Nah, not really," Shield said, waving her concerns away with his hand. "I'm hardly a chatterbox myself. If someone feels the need to fill the silence, they're welcome to, but with all the time we spend in combat and literally fighting for our lives, I feel like a little peace and quiet isn't such a bad thing, you know?"

The wind was beginning to pick up, cooling off the light perspiration that had accumulated from hiking through the wilderness. As he wiped his brow on the back of his hand, the thought occurred to him that sweat was an entirely pointless feature of the game. Not only that, but the exercise and training that his body was undergoing was not happening to his physical body. If anything his physical body was wasting away in some hospital, growing more wan and weak with each passing day.

Suddenly, his limbs no longer felt as if they were attached to him and he shuddered slightly.

I need to stop getting lost in thought. It always leads to uncomfortable places.

Teion mulled over his words for a moment before nodding her head in agreement. "Mm, yeah." She spoke softly. Her head was riddled with thoughts nowadays, and she found it easy to get lost among them. Both of their luck seemed to have hit a lull, with neither player stopping to grab any materials for a few minutes. Once again, the two walked in silence for a bit before Teion's wandering eyes caught a glance of the dark green shell on Shield's back. She had quickly turned her attention back forward so as not to stare, but found her fingers fidgeting with themselves as a question nagged at her.

"Where did you find him?" She finally asked, casting another sidelong glance towards the snapping turtle on the man's back. The blacksmith had been tossing around the idea of searching for a familiar of her own after a couple of brief conversations in the past. She even knew which kind of animal she would want if she had the luxury of choosing, but lacked the motivation to do the research needed to get herself to the correct floor.

"Hm? Oh, well we actually met in a different game a long time ago," he began, missing the point of her question entirely. "He and I were leaders of rival guilds, and we eventually just ran through our skill trees and ran out of challenges in the old game, so... we moved to a new battlefield to settle our score."

As he spoke, his earring began to glow once again, and he bent over to retrieve a piece of what appeared to be Topaz among a few other mundane looking stones. He banished the item to his inventory before turning his eyes back towards the road.

"If we're going to find a dungeon today, I bet you it will be in the sharp ravine that's coming up ahead."

Sure enough, ahead of them on the road, the walkway swept downward into a deep trench that ran in same the direction as that of that the mountain range ahead of them.

"Wh-what?" Teion stopped for a moment after hearing Shield's explanation, staring at the unmoving shell strapped to the man's back in disbelief. "Oh, wait... I meant--" Teion seemed a bit flustered before stopping herself and regaining her composure. "Sorry, I'm not sure who you're talking about. I was asking about him." Teion pointed to Norbert. At least, she was pretty sure there was a misunderstanding. Unless this game held some incredibly odd, unknown mechanics, she was certain Shield couldn't be referring to the turtle familiar on his back.

Despite the confusion, Teion turned in attention once the man pointed out the potential location of a dungeon. The blacksmith nodded, taking only a second to activate her Search skill and carefully scan the area. Sure enough, the system alerted her of something after a bit and Teion pulled up her map to make a mental note of their coordinates. "There." She pointed an outstretched hand toward a large boulder resting against the identically rocky wall. "The entrance is behind that rock. We can probably move or break it to get in."
