[PP-F21] <<Betrayal of the King>> Ain't nothin but a corn dog

Recommended Posts

It was frustrating, incredibly and terribly frustrating to do so very little damage to this giant boss. But...as much as the hateful and hurtful thoughts were trickling in and trying to stop her - the encouraging ones began to bubble up. Spurred on by Cordelia and Oscars encouragement. They were right - this was meant to be one of the most frustrating and hardest quest bosses. And yet, they were literally cleaving it into pieces. Destroying it!  It's health had dropped well below half. And all four of them still had their HP in the green.

Baldur mentioned her DoT - Mari flashed him a small smile, waving her dagger around. "Ah- Ah that takes a bit of luck though. I think I spent all my luck today on getting that delicious food that almost put you in a coma." She chided before flipping her dagger into a reverse grip. She turned her attention back to the quest boss. The large looming king - and charged.

Booted feet carried her weightlessly across the ground - tattered blackened scarf trailing behind her. Her dagger flashed brightly as she pivoted on her heel, her dagger slashing into the heel of the The King over and over again - her eyes steeled - focused on the enemy. She skidded back when the Sword Art flickered out and wiped her brow. She was still frustrated at herself for dealing such little damage.

But at least she was hitting it.

sobs in 7th draft

This fight had dragged on longer than she anticipated. Maybe if she flippin' procced her holy, it would have ended a while ago! Not one single proc the whole fight! Oh Onimaru, why must you loathe her? Half a years work of upgrading and zombie slaying. . . and egg finding and not a single proc? Why? Why!? Must Lady Luck be this against her? It took a whole lot of will to not freak out about this. She could be doing far worse, yes, but she could be doing far, far better. Cordelia sighed. If only she had a weapon that suited her stupid luck and not one that procs five percent of the time. If only, if only.

At least she wasn't missing

She'll that thought at that. She refused for her mind to go. . . back there.

Alright, focus on the brighter side of things! She chided mentally. Things more than halfway dead. We got this! Oscar just needs to keep. . .proccing his enhancements and we'll be fine!

The small spike of adrenaline seemed to suck her back into the fight and out of her thoughts. Ah, right. She was fighting something. Haha-- yeah, she guessed that forgetting you were fighting a giant living chunk of undead flesh was something you could forget about.

She drew in a sharp breath, shooting Mari a brief thumbs-up as she raced back into the battle. Her boots skidded against the unpaved floors, tracking up bits of dirt and dust as she attempted to reuse the same tactic she had basically been using the entire fight. The same tactic. The only tactic.

Cordelia's form veered as she dashed behind the Forgotten Time King another time. Her figure sprang into the air as she heaved her katana forward, creating a horizontal spin which chipped away at the beast's near impenetrable armor until she slammed her katana down on the king's back. The sharp sound of metal against metal made her cringe, and she nearly found herself falling down on her butt had it not been for Onimaru-- which just so happened to be lodged in the thick plated armor. "Crud nuggets," she whispered, latching her hand on the hilt before she pulled the curved sword away-- which was a lot harder than it looked, by the way-- and very quickly shuffled back to the safeties of her party.

They were in the final stretch. The King was firmly in the red. Oscar, for his part, was content with the party's performance. They'd really hammered this boss. Not a single one of them had taken so much as a scratch. But there was something in the pit of his stomach. Things had gone too smoothly up until this point. Between the back-to-back-to-back activations of Fallen and the fact they they had been running roughshod over the most difficult quest boss currently available, the party was about primed for the King to flip the script on them. Oscar chalked it up to his anxiety running rampant in the middle of a fight. But still...

It really came as no surprise when just that happened.

With a sudden acuity, the boss wheeled around. It was as if it was laser focused on Baldur. Before Oscar could even make a move to try and stop it, the King thrust out its spear and dashed forward like lightning. Oscar watched in horror as Baldur was impaled upon the King's spear and lifted high into the air. Once the weapon had reached its apex, a bolt of lightning crashed down from the sky. Using the tip of the spear as a lightning rod, the electricity traveled through the metal - delivering a nasty shock to Baldur in the process. As if that weren't enough, the King slammed Baldur into the ground and brought his boot down on Baldur's chest. Leaning forward, the King pinned Baldur in place as he removed his weapon from the unfortunate samurai's sternum.

Oscar's feet started moving before his brain could even process what had happened. Instinctively, he launched an Explode Catapult. Tesseleth's Fury slammed into the King's chest, sending it sliding backwards a few feet. Just enough to give him some breathing room to check on Baldur. One look at the samurai's health bar told him that it had looked worse than it actually was. Still though, that was absolutely brutal. Oscar held out his hand for Baldur, who had to be more shocked than hurt at this point. "That was one hell of a hit man. Let me give you a hand," Oscar said, the concern still not fully faded from his face.

When the spear of the Forgotten King took Baldur, the world went sideways.

He had a vague recollection of seeing the ceiling, then the floor, then lightning, then the ceiling again, and finally a boot stomping down on his chest as the wicked, undead looking menace stared down at him. Too real bile dripping down from its skeletal maw.

It all happened so fast, Baldur wasn't even hardly aware of what happened, other than the took a hit. As bad a hit as the king was capable of dealing to him.

Then Oscar was standing over Baldur as he coughed, trying to get air that wasn't there back into his lungs. Oscar's hand pulled him up and helped the Samurai get oriented once again with the fight. However, Baldur had been in this spot before. He fought this boss before. He had taken this exact hit before.

"Thanks man, I got this." A smile came back to his face, and his steel blue eyes locked back on to the boss. With a kick of his foot, Baldur lifted the blade up from the ground and caught, already in motion back towards the Forgotten Time King. Being hit was part of the job, and if he wasn't used to it, he wasn't very good at it. He had tried going the glass cannon route before, and he had ended up with single digit HP in a boss room. Baldur had forged himself out of sterner stuff this time.

The gold and white arc of light as he cut through the air with his sword art struck home, again and again, tearing the form of the skeleton apart.

Get back up and get moving. He repeated to himself, he had no time to dwell on hit points. Just that he had lost the hate lead, and needed to earn it back before Oscar lost it.

"BALDUR!"

There was something in those words, that shout. Mari's voice trembled with a pain behind it, one that tore through the field. Fear for her comrade, and a lonely desperate tone warbled through the battlefield at the echo of his name. A part of her winced at how she had cried it out - but, it was instinctual. Seeing the normally stout and strong Samurai impaled upon a stick like he was one of Oscars goddamned hotdogs?

Mari wished she was able to do more. She wished she could hit heavier, maybe then...Mari glanced back over her shoulder at Baldur. Her heart ached to see him being hurt like that. Blue eyes reflected a strong worry for him, sure - his health was fine but...seeing someone you care about being injured like that... Mari almost forgot what that felt like. To see something so violent. It was easy to be desensitized to things in this game. But... I don't want anyone else to die Mari forced her eyes shut and pulled her head away from Baldur.

Once they opened they were focused on the Forgotten Time King. It's open maw mocking them, laughing at them. Mari grit her teeth as she charged forward, activating the only useful thing she had in her arsenal, <<Eternal Cyclone>> Each step forward was heavy, pounding into the earth with the will to flatten the vile, decepit, disgusting excuse of a king. "Stay forgotten!" Mari hissed at it as her dagger tore through rotted flesh over and over again. Well...she would have managed to inflict a heavy case of burn and bleed on the thing - but no. This stupid sh*tlord just had to be immune to everything.

Mari skidded back from the fight, the hand that held her dagger trembled. Knuckles white with the hard grip on her blade. She had to calm herself down. Baldur was okay. He was okay. He's okay.

Everyone here...they were all okay. The king was close to dying, it was just lashing out, nothing more.

We're okay....

It was perhaps...foolish for her to turn her back on the king. But Mari didn't care. She never really had a strong sense of self preservation. Still, she turned her back on that king - and approached Baldur. Her heart pounded in her chest, she could hear it in her ears - and Mari told herself it was only because she was in an intense battle. "A-Are-" Her words were shaky. Mari swallowed and reached out to Baldur, a small hand landing on his upper arm. Lending him whatever warmth she had.

"Are you sure you're okay? That looked...pretty brutal." Mari said, her voice  no longer shaken.

The wind generated by the sheer force of The King sent her stumbling back a step as she brought her -14arms up to block the incoming dirt and debris. It was that fast the whole time? What exactly had it been doing for the last hour? Had this whole fight been some kind of sick ruse? Once the initial gale had subsided, she lowered her arms and immediately, a jolt of shock and terror ran down her spine. The feeling was almost nauseating, to see such a prominent figure in your life punctured like meat to a skewer.

Cordelia gripped the hilt of her katana so intensely that she swore her knuckles turned white. Yet, she couldn't bring herself to move a muscle, almost as if her feet were rooted to the very ground she stood on, and she could only watch in terror as Baldur was hoisted into the air like a damn torch. As if his very body was the conductor, a jagged bolt of lightning came down on the spear and her mentor and with it, came another strong gust and a blinding light that illuminated the entire area around them for only a split second.

She cringed away as the mob slammed him down back on the ground, only to firmly place his foot down on his chest. She was sure that the beast would've exerted more force if it weren't for Oscar swooping in and driving the thing away with an Explode Catapult.

"Oh thank God," she muttered, letting out a relieved sigh she didn't know she had been holding in. She wasn't sure how much longer she could stand watching Baldur's body be tossed around like a lifeless ragdoll.

She almost chuckled under her breath as she watched him spring back to life as soon as The King was driven back by Mari and Oscar. She should've known that something like that wouldn't be enough to bring down the gaijin samurai. As soon as he laid out his barrage on the undead king, she made a break for it. The tip of katana scraped against the ground just slightly before she sprung into the air. Deciding to choose a different approach this time around, she faced The King head on. She slammed her katana down on its gastly head as hard as she could before she rammed it back, creating a bigger distance between it and the group.

Cordelia leaped back, catching herself stumbling a few times as she landed. She looked over her shoulder towards Baldur. "That was one of the nastiest attacks I've ever seen. How you are holding up?... being electrocuted and everything."

The King was now on its last legs. The ceaseless onslaught from the party had brought them to the precipice of victory. They were so close at this point, Oscar could almost taste it. Not a lot of people had slain this boss before. Probably due to the inherent durability of the thing more than any inherent difficulty. Baldur had taken a nasty hit, but it had barely budged his health bar. But, in so doing, now the King had wild aggro. And, unfortunately, Cordelia had been the most recent one to draw its ire. Before Oscar could even react, the King thrust forward with his spear. The golden weapon buried itself into her shoulder, taking a healthy chunk out of her health bar in the process.

Now, Oscar felt a mixture of emotions. On the one hand, Oscar couldn't find himself being too concerned about her well-being. A little cold, if he were being honest. But he was just seeing the situation for what it was. The boss wouldn't be around long enough to be a real threat and she still had plenty of health to spare. However, the King had just hit his girlfriend. And Oscar wasn't about to take that lying down. All emotion drained from his face as he calmly strode over to the king. His axe dragged against the ground, sparks flying as the edge chipped the stone beneath his feet. Before he could even remove his spear from Cordelia's shoulder, Oscar swung Tesseleth's Fury straight into his face. The spear was wrenched from Cordelia's body as it was blasted backwards into a nearby half-broken column. Oscar didn't need the help of any Fallen damage to send the King flying. Just the force of his own outrage. He cast his gaze over to Cordelia, peering at her through the corner of his eye.

"You're good, right?"

He needed no answer. His attention was shifted then to Baldur who was in a prime position to deal the final blow. With the king reeling from being sent flying, there was little chance that Baldur wouldn't be able to finish this. "Baldur. Bring it home," he urged his comrade. So confident that this fight would be soon over that Oscar put away his axe and crossed his arms over his chest, ready to watch the carnage unfold.

After Baldur's impalement, he saw the others rush forward, concerned for his well-being as he slammed into the ground. The blow was apparently brutal from an outsiders perspective, while for Baldur it had happened as was over before he knew what was going on. Their attacks rallied, though the gaijin's fears were finally realized now that he nor Oscar had a hate lead. The forgotten king impaled Cordelia with his spear, but did not activate whatever grandiose attack he had used on Baldur.

After Oscar smacked the King back with Zandra's old axe, Baldur saw his opening, and the tiny bit of health the mob had left.

A smirk appeared on his face. Holding <<Warden's Fury>> out in the premotion for <<San Ge>> Baldur's form blurred. For a moment, it seemed as if there were five of the gaijin samurai, each attacking the Forgotten Time King one after the other, but without time for Baldur to get from one position to the other. One by one the blows landed until Baldur's form finally stopped moving, with the king behind him. Slowly, Baldur counted his heartbeats, trying to get the timing just right.

This is the moment.

Baldur looked at this rest of his party, the King looming above him as the health bar slowly ticked down, and just when it looked like there might be one more hit left in the boss, Baldur whirled his katana around and sheathed it. Instead of the click of his katana being locked into the saya, the boss exploded behind him, raining gravity defying, luminous polygons through the air.

The whole effect was timed so well that the only thing that spoiled the effect was a Baldur's [censored] eating grin.

His eyes turned towards Cordelia, her HP was the lowest of them, but she was still barely scratched. Everyone here would be fine now that the fight was ended.

"So, anyone up for more Tacos?"

Of course he was okay.

Mari breathed a sigh of relief. Stepping away from Baldur who had chosen to ignore everything else in leui of attacking the Forgotten King, ever the calculating and strong fighter that he was. And who could blame him? The king was nothing more than a decrepit mess. Mari glanced down at her blade; missing the better half of his attack. She was focused on her own inadequate damage. If she had been stronger - the hate may have been divided more evenly. They wouldn't be in this situation. Baldur wouldn't have been thrown to the ground - Cordelia wouldn't have been attacked.

But - that's just it, isn't it? This was a game. And attacks like that meant nothing. Felt like close to nothing, anything lingering was simply psychological.

She put her blade away, knowing Baldur was finishing off the mob - speaking of.... Blue eyes rose to meet the final move. With a flourished flick of the wrist and the katana falling into its sheathe the King exploded behind the Shinsengumi clad man. His hair a flutter in the breeze - angled jaw lowered. Wh- Did-

Mari stared dumbfounded, then - laughter erupted from her form. Mari held her sides as she wheezed. "Omygh- Ba..." She breathed between fits of giggles. "You looked like a total dork." She managed to gasp before laughing again. Holding her sides as tears stung her eyes. When was the last time Mari laughed like this? When was the last she was able to just completely loose it at something? Try as she might she couldn't stop laughing - maybe all those times she'd pushed it down became too much. Maybe it was just the complete anime trope that was the dumb Gaijin Samurai that she adored. Regardless....

Mari finally took a deep breath, wiping her eyes.

"T-Tacos would be great." She said finally.

Cordelia's lips pursed, her body recoiling as the heavy metal weapon speared through her shoulder. "Dadgummit," she muttered, ready to retaliate with an attack of her own until she saw Oscar's figure move forward from the corner of her eye. She lowered her katana, grimacing at the sound of his axe grinding against the ground like nails to a chalkboard.

Oh, my poor eardrums...

A low whistle left her lips as he swung Tesseleth's Fury at the king, effectively ripping its weapon out of her shoulder and sending it hurling backwards and into an already decaying column. She clicked her tongue and gave him a thumbs up. "Never been better," she replied, patting off the wound on her shoulder, of which had already started closing up... because game logic.

Cordelia withdrew Onimaru in its sheath and clapped her hands together with a wide grin. "Yay! Go Baldur!" she exclaimed, bringing her hands up like a personal cheerleader would in... situations you would need personal cheerleaders for. She swayed slightly from side to side as she watched the mob meet its demise via super cool movie-level final attack. This probably could be a movie if... y'know, they weren't stuck in a video game.

"Whoo!" she piped excitedly, bounding over to the gaijin samurai as soon as the bane of her existence had been successfully destroyed, and of course, it wouldn't be a good final attack if he didn't say something completely unrelated to the fight. No 'wow, that was a tough battle' or 'good job team'... nope. Just 'So, anyone up for more tacos?'. She sighed, laughing to herself under her breath. A true Baldur move. At least Mari seemed to be having a kick out of it. Cordelia turned her head towards the carrot-head and giggled. She was glad that something got her mind off of the fight.

"Yeah, tacos sound good."
