[F23-PP] Holding Out For A Hero(?) <<Search and Rescue>>

Recommended Posts

Well, the beast men wouldn't be moving for long. NIGHT unsheathed Thunderstorm from her back, wriggling her fingers as she felt her hands make their home upon the new grip. Sharp. Painful, if she let the sensation overwhelm her, but in the heat of battle there wouldn't be time to register the slight inconvenience when she was busy beating her enemies into the ground.

Her trainers hit the earthy stone, her speed picked up as she rushed towards her blazing brazen foes, forms made distinct against the hazy forest and dreary vista. With a leap, she sunk the pummel of her sword into their leader's chest, struck down in between its clavicles, the sensation of the art enough to register her action through the clan's followers with a sickening thud. The impact hollowed the ground, indenting it only for a second, before the path before her recovered, though the damage was done. Silence and stillness remained, save for the flying blur of black.

In her rush, NIGHT toppled two of the beasts down to the floor, pinning them down before pulling her blade out of her victim's chest. Just one more art, and they would be done.

Yuki watched Night move in. She was fast, much faster than Yuki was for sure. Though to be fair, Yuki was donned in extra baggage of protective metal. Yuki smiled to her friend.

"Night, I love tanking for you, I don't have to worry about taking a ton of damage with you stunning everything." Two-Handed Straight Swords were amazing choice of weapon. Having area of effect stun was insanely powerful for a damage player. She was sure that Night could have done this quest solo if she wanted to. She was wondering what she was really needed for here.

"I'm starting to feel a bit useless when my tanking doesn't help as much as I would want it to." The girl took her weapon and slashed each enemy with the blade of her spear. Barely any damage even with bleed activating. Man why can't she just do more damage than just a single point?

When she got up, she shifted her sword ahead of her, watching the beast men slowly start to rise.

Oh no you don't.

One rippling wave of light downwards, her edge coated in a wrap of white, and it struck the earth with a sizzling crack, severing the two shambling threats underneath her shoes. Then, a horizontal cut, sending a second shockwave out to the bastards regaining their movements, about to charge towards their enemy, their foe -- her ally and friend.

"You'd be--"

A ringing in the air, their red forms splitting in half.

"--surprised."

It remained in her ears, the howls of the damned drowned out by the various explosions of data in the distance, as NIGHT set her blade down to her side with a huff, before turning over to look at Yuki. "Insurance can give players like us a peace of mind. If I hadn't any, I might be quaking in my boots right now in the very space you stand. We're not all lucky enough to find support like that."

"Besides," she added, starting to head back towards the nook in the ruins where she'd left Fonsa at, "You're getting experience from this too. Don't you need that on your journey to become a great tank?" Her words were loaded with sarcasm, but they were brutally honest to a fault -- no harm in hauling someone off to the front lines off the efforts of her own labor if it meant getting repaid in folds later.

"I'll be with you in a second. Let me fetch the wife first, and then we can head back."

Yuki returned her weapon to her own pocket dimension known as the inventory while Night spoke. Watching her head back to the dark elf woman so they could return with her to the Underdark. She pouted a bit.

"I understand that and I'll always tank for you if you need it, but I just wish I could handle more was all. There is a lot of things I've wanted to do since I started here and I'm worried that I won't be strong enough for my friends in the future or something... I don't know if I'm worrying needlessly..." She muttered, wondering what else she was good for than just this.

"H-Hey! I am a great tank! ...Right? I haven't died yet and no that's been with me has taken anymore than AoE damage... I didn't mean to make you feel worried. I try not to feel uncertain, but today feels like an exception." The girl waited for the other two to move up with her and decided to lead the way in case anything else ambushed us.

In a moment, NIGHT arrived back to Yuki's side. Fonsa appeared to be well enough to walk on her own, so neither player would have to be troubled with hauling the NPC themselves. She trailed behind the dark adventurer's footsteps, a shadowing of sorts. What was left of their broken equipment had been opted to be pieces forgotten to time, trash lying in the ruins, which meant that they didn't have to carry anything back to the Underdark either. Convenient.

"I do think you're worrying about it a little too much," the player returned to her friend, hand clasped around the back of her own neck. With the other, she gestured them to pace forward, back into the caverns of the gloom. "Have you forgotten? I chewed you out just the other day for a build like that; it's reliant on others, but it's not like it's a problem as long as you have people to fall back on."

"''The truth is we'll always rely on the kindness of strangers.'"

NIGHT tucked a lock of hair behind her ear as she kept moving, giving her pink bulwark a glance. "So, yeah. You are a good tank, since you're doing your job right. If you're worried about damage output, I'm sure there's more than one way to solve that."

Yuki looked over at Night as she spoke, trying to calm her worried nerves with better thoughts while she listened. Her distressed expression changed as she reminded Yuki that she was doing everything she needed to do for the people she was helping. It was her job to make sure that nobody got hurt other than her. The girl let out a hefty sigh.

"Thanks for believing in me Night. I'll continue to grow stronger. I'm not that worried about doing damage I guess. It just sucks to see me doing effectively nothing to enemies. That's why I have friends like you! So I don't...you know, suffer a slow death cause I can't kill something..." Try not to think about it Mikoto...

The girl decided that it was probably a good idea to shift the conversation anyway, so she leaned in close to Night and whispered to her in a hushed ton. "You said you like girls... Do you like Bunny Girls? Like in the magazines?"

The question that attacked her seemed to have come from nowhere. Though, given anyone's best guess reviewing the conversation, they would've said it was to be expected.

Instead, NIGHT could only offer a sputtering, her cheeks burning a vibrant vermillion, her hand instinctually going over her mouth. Here we go again, the player mourned, feeling the pinprick sensation running over her body.

It sucked being so sensitive to intimate talk.

The woman murmured an agreement behind her glove, before realizing her answer probably fell short of clarity. "Yeah," she uttered back, withdrawing her hand slightly, trying not to meet Yuki's gaze when she replied. Swallowing. "I-I mean, I guess I like them in general...? It's not like I owned a copy of one before... They're... tough to get around here." The best she got out of her research were images on the internet, and even then the aforementioned models only in passing. She never needed to use them, though. Her imagination was more than enough.

NIGHT cleared her throat, glancing over behind her, ensuring that their escort was still following them. What she feared more was the system judging them, after potentially listening into their conversation. Imagine what it would do with that information. The thought alone could drive her into paranoia about her own safety at home.

"Why bunny girls out of all things, any way? Aren't there others...?"

Yuki's face turned a little red when seeing how she might have embarrassed her friend, but still it was nice to get know a person that she might end up questing with later. Perhaps maybe this topic was a bit too personal, but they already discussed it earlier. There was also the fact that she literally had nothing else on her mind.

"G-Gomen, I don't mean to be so invasive. It's just we were talking about it earlier and it became a bigger deal than I thought it would. I haven't been able to get my mind off it is all..." Yuki's ears perked up as she asked her question about bunny girls. The woman's face only got more flustered, but she still enjoyed talking about the bunnies.

"Ahem..." She cleared her throat nervously. "When I said I lied earlier, I meant about wanting to be one... Is that bad?"

Oh.

Oh, was that all she meant?

"No. There's no problem with that," NIGHT replied, taking only a second to tear her eyes off the road. It'd only occurred to her now just how intense her speech was earlier, embarrassment and a tinge of regret flooding her being in a wave. "I... I thought it was on your identity." Tightened fists, as the player checked her breathing. "You shouldn't have to deal with that kind of doubting," came her reassurance to her friend, the woman's gaze clamoring up the the warbled walls of the cavern they trekked through.

It was warm, in the dark. Maybe that was just her, though. Lanterns lit their path, pushed to the edge of the road, their light running up the tunnel's sides and up towards the ceiling. The yellow glow and darkened atmosphere worked together to paint their road an inky brown, to which NIGHT focused her sights on, walking along in silence, at a loss for words.

When she found them again, she spoke up. "You're... closeted? Too? Right? Especially in a country surrounded by traditional values?" All she had to go on was general reasoning and stereotypes, so she was careful with her words, trying to catch where her expectations might be overturned. "So it's... it's hard sometimes. I... I get that."

Yuki looked down at her feet with a look of understanding. It was difficult for people in Japan to understand the younger generation, especially when they were someone as eccentric as Mikoto, Yuki.

"You see, I do have that view on life though. I enjoy company from both sexes." Her face only continued to get more red. "Most girls that I have met here in Aincrad have been lovely, including you." The words slipped from her mind out into open. "I-I-I- I m-mean-" Oh god she was going to embarrass the [censored] out of the both them at the same time, why was she so good at that? After that slip up, she decided to just stop talking at all.

Silence deafened both of their ears as Yuki clammed up. She wondered what that was going to put through Night's brain. "Um...do you wanna come to my house or shop when we're done? I'll make you a free meal." She said finally, pretty quietly.

"You do?" The words flowed out of NIGHT as though she'd been holding in water, the woman gagging in surprise at her misunderstanding. She'd wanted to follow up with another question, though it appeared that Yuki had already answered it for her, and the woman's ears burned at the statement. NIGHT looked away, only capable of tuning into her friend's stammering, and before she let her mind wander, she held onto the one tidbit of information the paladin gave away.

That the two of them were, first and foremost, downright embarrassing with how they communicated.

So the quiet remained between them. The knight was wrestling with the question if she was being hit on right now, a hand to her mouth, incapable of meeting the other's gaze. Typical NIGHT. She felt her tongue run over the edges of her teeth, trying to regain a sense of control over her reality. When she decided she was ready to speak again, she pulled away her cover from her mouth.

Yuki piped up instead.

"Um...do you wanna come to my house or shop when we're done? I'll make you a free meal."

NIGHT slowly shut her jaw.

So.

So what did that mean.

One wouldn't think that a conversation required its personnel to perform some mental gymnastics. But here NIGHT was acting on them all the same. The formulas that drifted over her eyes were almost, almost visible in white against the cavern's darkness.

Her throat was parched. Her mind was cloudy. But finally, the woman willed herself to speak.

"Sure." Croaky, broken, hoarse.

Oh, right, she runs a food store. That's her profession.

"I'm paying though." A cough. "For services rendered."

Yuki got a smile out finally, now she was a little excited! Not many people had the chance to go to her shop yet, so it would be fun to take someone there. Her memory trailed to how much Crozeph had treasured her food. She wished that Night would have the same impression. That being said, how much further away was the meeting place where they escorted the woman?

"Y-You aren't paying for anything unless it is buffed. And even then, the first buffed food is free to new customers. I refuse to accept your col." Yuki said to affirm her position. It wasn't like she needed col to keep the business running anyway. "I can make you just about any traditional Japanese dish you could ever want. If there is anything you want to try, let me know and I wont hesitate to make it for you, Night-chan." The pink haired girl flashed Night a much more laid back smile, hoping that it would help lighten the mood at least a little. They could talk more about this stuff in a private location.

With how steadfast Yuki seemed to be on payment, NIGHT could only manage a grumble and a furrowing of her brows. "Fine," she drawled, turning her head away, trying not to draw attention to herself as she continued to ruminate on their social intentions. Maybe she could slip in a bit of col somewhere, force her companion to take it...

She couldn't lie though, Japanese food was delicious. At Yuki's offer, the woman would've jumped on suggesting one of her favorite meals right off the bat, but the situation felt too awkward to jump the gun with a request like that... All NIGHT could do was nod, grunting in agreement--

--Did her friend just use an honorific for her?

"NIGHT is fine," came an exasperated reply, the player whipping her head around to face the paladin. "Just-- just NIGHT. It's more of a title than a name..." An awful clarification, she chided herself inwardly, her eyes closed but for a beat as she placed a hand upon her own cheek. "But I appreciate it. Um, thank you."

The mouth of the cavern finally began to open up, the city unveiled as they approached it from the dark. One round trip over to -- what was his name again? Titan? No, that was her friend -- and they reunited the couple to the unceremonious enjoyment of no one.

Good. Now that the quest was over...

"So, your shop," NIGHT brought up once more. "Lead the way, Yuki."

The paladin took lead to the city teleportation pad. They would have to go down a floor to get to her house, so her voice came out to break the silence of the quiet, dark city.

"Floor Twenty-Two: Coral!" With a flash of light that covered her vision no more quickly than a blink, the pinkette stood in the center of Coral and waited for her friend to step through the teleporter herself. Once she did, she led Night outside of the safe zone, where just on the outside was a large wall of a enclosed building. On the other side was the opening to one part of the house. The smell of Japanese cuisine suffocated one's nasal.

The sliding Japanese-style door was flung open by the girl who instinctively called out - "Tadaima!" Once they were through there, she went through the door that was actually locked on the opposite wall, allowing Night to walk through. Of course, she couldn't enter Yuki's house unless she let her though. Once they were both inside, the girl removed her armor and replaced it with a pink kimono. "My personal kitchen is next to my room. Yeah, I have two kitchens." The girl admitted and lead her past her room and into the small section kitchen that was insanely, immaculately clean. She stepped behind the counter after pulling her up a chair. "So Night, what do you want?"

She said shop, right? Was anyone there to check with her, verify her words? Shop, not home?

NIGHT was frazzled when her sights were set upon the Minka abode. Why were they here? Where was the store? The player found herself wordless as she followed her pink-haired companion along, wondering how quickly she should resign herself to her fate. Maybe speaking clearly would be the best way to go about it -- traditionalist values and mannerisms had gotten her into this mess, dodging around various crucial pieces of information, though it felt like breaking the law just to go against them even once.

Two kitchens, Yuki told her. Why did someone need two kitchens again?

She'd unequipped her shoes at the entrance, stepping into the home with black socks on foot. In a dazzle, her friend swapped her equipment to something more casual, comfortable. All NIGHT was capable of pulling off was her tracksuit, adapting to the warmer climate for the moment, before tailing her host into her personal cookery, taking a seat at the chef's offer.

"Um." The player in dark was still, still astounded by how she got herself into this mess. She barely had time to register the majesty of the structure she'd just walked into, nor had the courage to impose further on someone's generosity. But, put on the spot, she gathered her words. "Udon. Odamaki-mushi."

The order NIGHT had spilled out surprised even the woman herself.

"... Thank you for your hospitality...!"

"Yosh! Odamaki-Mushi!" With that in mind the girl got to work on the order. She was fast and precise with the order, going through the process without even having to look at a recipe list whilst working. While she was cooking, she seemed to let her worries wash away and like she was at peace. It was something that reminded her just how basic human life can be compared to the hellish battle the players of SAO struggled with on a daily basis. With the simplified cooking process of Aincrad speeding up the cooking, her food was ready in a matter of about ten minutes. She placed a big helping of the meal down on the counter in front of Night and smiled.

"Douzo!" The girl said and turned back to the mess she made, cleaning it up before partaking in the food. The smell wafting from the Udon was overtaking the room quickly. "Anyway I was going to cook in my shop, but the conversation we had earlier was still on both of our minds. I figured that if you wanted to talk on it further, we she do it in a private area where no one can hear us. So...I do think you are... rather cute Night. I was recently attempting to get close to someone...but they shot me down. A guy. I would- well, I think I would actually prefer a woman in my life."

@NIGHT

The food looked exquisite.

The conversation was not.

As NIGHT cooed her praises over the dish set in front of her, she began to pick up the set of chopsticks set by the side of the bowl. Locked in her fingers, they hovered over the meal, intercepting its rising steam, and that was then Yuki began speaking.

It was proper she looked at her conversationalist in the eye to pay her attention. But NIGHT immediately regretted doing so, after the first line.

Her gaze went back to her food, the woman sweating bullets. The scarlet could be seen creeping up her cheeks, her ears as she looked down, wordless, trembling almost visible. A confession? For her? Here? Now? Again? In an enclosed space this time? She didn't even have her jacket on this turn. She didn't know how to reply. She was as trapped as a wild animal in a small wire cage, and that feeling was awful. Dreadful.

Suffocating.

The clatter of wood against ceramic started to pick up in volume. NIGHT felt her jaw lock firmly in place, grin plastered hard and fast to her face. Her eyes went from the mushrooms, to the carrots, to the Naruto half-stuck in the chawanmushi, only barely peeking out from the cream-coloured mess. Could she pull this off better than the last time? Maybe she could. Only one way to find out.

A single try to wriggle herself free and escape this pit of despair. So it was up to her, and her alone, to gather her own wits and power through it.

Right?

Watch. Her. Fail.

One gulp. A rise of her head. "Yuki," the name poured out of her, feeling like needles upon her tongue. Her voice was wavering, but NIGHT didn't want to unsettle her nerves further by disrupting her response with a clear of her throat. "I really appreciate your sentiment. Honestly speaking."

"But."

This was where the player put the side of her fist over to her own mouth, a grimace half covered, her heart hammering wildly against her chest as she forced herself to gather the decency to look at Yuki straight in the face.

Because last time, she couldn't. And NIGHT needed to make up for that.

"I barely know you. And I'm sorry, but I don't think I feel the same way."

Heartbreak Count: 2. Somewhere out there, Cupid must be spurning her love life.

Yuki was quiet while Night writhed in her seat. She knew the answer there, Night didn't really need to say anything. In fact, she hadn't even realized how much what she said sounded like a confession. After several broken up sentences, trying to force them out. Yuki thought how best she could respond to this situation, since she was the one who made it completely awkward. After a moment of silence, she put her hands down on the counter and, with a smile, said...

"Okay!" This was the third time someone had denied her confession even though it wasn't necessarily a confession. She was only expressing interest... The girl took a  bowl of the noodles for herself and took a heaping bite out of the noodles that she had made. Trying to think of anything else she could say to defuse the situation.

"Night, I'm sorry if I made this extremely awkward, I truly apologize for that. I didn't mean to put you on the spot like that. I want you to know that my intention was just to ask you if this was a possibility. I'm...afraid... Every time I try to further a relationship with a person, with someone I like, they instantly shoot me down and become distant... If they learn too much about me, they look at me like I'm an animal in a zoo..." The girl covered her eyes with her then hands, like she was trying to hide tears. "I... Do you think anyone could ever love me Night?" The words muffled by quiet sobbing and her own hands.

Was it right to continue eating her meal in peace? It didn't feel that way. All the woman could taste in her mouth was poison, the pressure of her tongue against the roof of her gums keeping her jaw shut and clearing out her taste buds. She exhaled, a huff through her nose as NIGHT set the chopsticks down across her bowl of food, before setting her elbow up on the table, pushing her fringe backwards in a deflated, dissatisfied scowl.

At least Yuki seemed upbeat about the response. If only she could feel that way about it too.

But looks were deceiving, and her host was much better versed in her language than NIGHT was. She watched her friend mutter her feelings out across from her, taking on the image of a pitiable creature trying to make themselves small. And NIGHT had just done that herself earlier, too, she mused, looking upon her companion in sorrow. What words could bring her companion to rouse in cheer again? Was it possible? Maybe these things -- these emotions and feelings -- just needed some distance to settle properly. A wound that only time could heal.

"One day," NIGHT reassured her, eyes closed as she prayed for her friend's wish in silence. "You'll find someone, I'm sure. We... we both will, Yuki."

It was a promise even she herself was afraid to make.

"But," the player rose from her dreary position, straightening out her back, her face still contorted in a mournful frown. "Until then, I guess I'll be by your side. If-- If you'll have me, as a friend and an ally, I mean."

A sigh passed her lips, breath weaving through gritted teeth. "Although, I kinda have to ask... Who's looking at you like what, now?" Sure, an admission of affection was a lot to take in, but it wasn't never-talk-to-someone-again material, was it...?

Yuki didn't remove her hands from her face, the girl continued to sob and it only got worse as she got close to revealing to her the most revealing secret that she kept guarded. The unfortunate reality that she couldn't hide from someone she took interest in, even if it meant ruining her chances with that person forever.

"Night..." She started and moved the frail fingers away from her eyes, tears streaming from her cheeks and a frown grazing her lips. "Night, I'm not actually a girl! I look like it and I want to be, but I'm not! I have taken hormone replacement therapy for years - years - and I'm forced to live with this body perpetually and will probably have an extremely hard time re-adapting to the hormones when I return to the real world! So many people - so many friends - gave up on me when I started! Nobody wanted anything to do with me! The only people I can rely on is my family!" The girl slammed her head against the counter, rather forcefully. "I don't think anyone will ever love me Night...I'll be alone... forever...."

The girl cried into the counter, sobbing over everything she's had to endure up to this point.
