[PP-F01] <<The Second Lesson, Is Also Free?!>>

Recommended Posts

Hael set out for another quest that morning. Without a day to rest, he was on the road the day after first lessons. Yesterday's ramen was glorious, he would reward himself for another day of work with yet another meal to pig out on. Today's craving? A bowl of Katsudon. He could never prepare the meat as tender as the shop down the alley. He would be sure to pry for the chef's secret recipe come evening.

With yesterday's events fresh in mind, his thoughts wandered to the other adventurer, Val. A green dot on his friends list signified the other was up and about, on the same floor in fact. He pulled up his menu and sent a quick text.

Quote

To: Valentine

From: Hael

Hey Val! It's Hael, remember? I'm doing second lessons right now. Farming for boar tusks, you know where I'll be.

He made his way to the hunting ground near the Town of Beginnings. A plain, open pasture, near identical to the one he'd traveled before. He withdrew his puny hunting knife. The dumbest thing he'd do in his life, underequipped against a pack of boars. Oh well, no rest for the wicked.

Valentine received the message and nodded at the coincidence. He was just starting on the second part of the lesson as well. Making it to the boar fields, the wide open expanse showed the beauty of floor 1, and the town of  beginnings. This time he sent the party request to Hael before he found him. Hael was probably unware of the fact that he kept in touch with no one else besides him and the guild. The guild he only got in by luck.

The boars were all around, the programmed monsters shuffled snorting and sending some new players flying. It was an interesting sight. As long as none of the new players were stupid they should be able to pull out of it. People dying was a common thing in the game but people dying in low level maps like this was the uncommon factor. Besides other players this could be considered one of the safer places in the game.

Hael received the party request mid battle and hit accept. Fired, up, all he had left to do was wait. He stepped out into the open, observing his surroundings. Boars trotted about in the distance, players like little dots on the horizon at battle. He whistled a quick tune and flipped his dagger, snatching it in mid air. He held the weapon in front of him and pointed straight at the boar. "I choose you!" he started, a play at his favorite game.

It was less of a serious fight than a game to him, as he provoked the hog. He kicked a rock and snatched it into his fist, plonking the top of the mob's head. It snorted, shaking its head. He let out a hearty laugh and dodged its charge, circling around. "Come at me." He was unaware of anyone approaching nearby. He continued to horse around, letting the hog chase after him. He could barely outrun the creature, but it was a piece of cake to dodge. A step to the side, and the thing went head first into a tree. Hael snorted back.

Valentine was amused with how Hael was handling the quest. This was the perfect time for Valentine to practice party attacks so he was a lot nicer when it came to this battle. Having a partner was a great way to learn what to focus on when it came to fighting. Two more boar pups approached the one Hael was harassing. Valentine stood in formation and charge forward, he slightly tripped over a rock and missed the moment to cast the spear art <<charge>>. He did bump into the other two boar pups drawing their attention. He could only hope Hael did not see it. If one looked closely they would be able to see a hint of scarlet on his ears.

The first boar rushed passed him as he side stepped it, only to be placed in the path of the second boar the sent him flying. It did not hurt his health as much as it did his pride.

He had not noticed the other's appearance, too enveloped in his horse play with the boar. A mop of silver hair appeared at the edge of his periphery. Hael grinned at his comrade, Val. "Hey, just gettin' started here." He pointed his dagger at the boar whose tusks were wedged into the tree stump. Their chance at idle chit chat was short lived, when two boars phased into range out of thin air. Hael's brow arched at the sudden intrusion. Oh well, a typical jumpscare. He wasn't keen on those.

He whipped around, observing Val in his element. He charged up his sword art and Hael cheered him on from the sidelines. His smile faded into a frown as the other missed. "Aww, poo." He followed up with a jab of his blade at the butt of the pup who had just broken free of the tree's hold. One measly damage, but he could hold his own.

Valentine gave the two boar pups a level look. He was not doing as well as he would have liked. The boar pups seemed to have been working together. The pawed around him for a moment as if deciding on how to take him out. As one left Valentine leveled his spear to take it out. It was a miss as the other boar pup rushed from behind and struck him in the back. The strike through his spear of balance as the other bore struck him in the back.

A semblance of panic crept into his heart. He would have been more worried if he remembered he was not working alone. "Rotate targets. Take out this boar and I will take out the one you are fighting. If we rotate it will be easier for us to work together. As long as we do that it will not take us long to take all three out." His voice was as stony as his face, showing no sign of panic to his predicament.

Hael was beginning to feel anxious, however he knew very well that he would have attempted something like this himself. Maybe with some buffs, solo, but he was counting that the two of them could find strength in numbers. He believed in the other, perhaps he was just having a rough day. The brunette pumped his fist in encouragement, only to have the other boar ram into him. He fell back on his rump, winded. Another boar charging at him prompted a swift move to his feet in order to evade its tusks.

He turned to face Valentine and lent an ear for his strategy.  "Alright. That one over there, right?"  He pointed a slender finger at the boar, who was scuffing the ground with its hooves. He flipped his dagger and sped towards the culprit, however he lost footing on a small rock and fell face flat. Ah, such finesse.

The duo was displaying what could only be described as poor teamwork. They were trying to focus on multiple things at once and it was making it all go poorly. It was a learning experience as Valentine felt his health points get closer to red. A valuable tank would have made it a lot easier for the duo. Valentine wanted to switch the aggro to Hael so he could heal up. Valentine was hit by boar pup two as it sent him forward. He rolled but stood in time to allow boar pup 1 to impale itself on his shaft.

Valentine stood and dusted himself off as he was going to reach to help Hael, boar pup number three came from behind to knock into him again. Valentine had his health go into the red. " Can you hold them off for a split second? I am going to need a moment to heal."

The boy was as unseasoned as they came, panic overtaking him at the state of the field. He could not focus with three, then two boars attacking them at the same time. With the amount his abilities ranged, he could do nothing of use. The heavy hitter here was Val, and he was struggling too. Further more, the sight of the man's health dwindling one point after the other set the boy on a flight of frenzy. He dropped his attention from the boars in order to check with him. Sensing the shift in mood, Val spoke, and Hael understood his orders. "Sure thing!" He pumped his fist in an attempt to stay upbeat. As long as he could give Val the chance to heal, they would be fine.

He watched Val type a quick SOS to Firm Anima. Help would be here soon, that he ascertained. All that was left now was to stay vigilant. For him and his comrade, and their future as kickass warriors. The legacy would not end here.

The angry snorts of the boars could be heard. Valentine did not have the luxury of focusing on them. He helped Hael get rid of his now he needed Hael to hold the fort for a turn. If worse came to worse he could have gotten the potion out while tanking another hit from the boar. As long as he healed he did not believe the two boar pups could continue to take advantage of him.

The potion was working wonders as his health bar shot up from red to full green. Valentine quickly read the notification that was on his screen, he had received one of the items for the quest. Before he hopped back into the fray of things he sent out a quick SOS to the guild. It was embarrassing on multiple levels but it would be best to stay alive to become strong. Valentine could only bury the moment in his heart and treat the battle like a learning experience.

Haine noticed the message pop up in her menu from the guild page. She clicked it and casually skimmed, noticing the red flare by the message title. SOS. Her heart began to race with worry. She read the message, which hinted at an emergency. It was coming from a newcomer, his coordinates pinned conveniently to the map thanks to the flare. A looming feeling urged her to spring up from her seat and reach for her belongings. She pulled on her garb and crushed a teleport crystal for the destination.

Blue locks flew with the wind as she entered the field, tracker pulled up with the coordinates. Hael's location just around the corner. There, revealed a duo of boars butting heads with two guild mates. She could not recall their names, but it was of little significance as she observed the boy's wired state. "What's the problem here?" she cut in, eyes trained between the two.

A messy haired brunette stepped forward with his dagger. "We came to kick boar ass, but they're kicking ours!" She gave a once-over to the pigs and tossed her hair over her shoulder. She conjured up a set of items that would prove beneficial for now or later. After this was over with, she would give them a talk.

His muscles were taut from stress as he kept an eye out on the boars and their aid incoming. Surely enough, like divine intervention, a slender, blue haired woman stepped into the fray. She wore an ornate garb and carried a regal air to her gait. He thought to ogle for a second, however for once, he had his priorities in line. She took charge of the escalation Hael started with a calm tone. The man across the field seemed at full health, but she could not speak for the situation beforehand. With a few swift taps, Hael and Val received a package of goodies. Immolation? Hael cocked a brow and pulled it out of his inventory to down anyways.

"Pop one of those and if you're hit, that bad boy's going down," she explained, calmly.

The fluid was like fiery habanero, it had a kick. Hael scrunched his nose in offense. "Woah, that's got a taste to it." He turned around to Val. "You good?"

Haine crossed her arms and surveyed the playing field. "You guys fight, I'll stay back her just in case. Keep going!" She sent them a quick nod.

Valentine gave a nod to Hael before speaking to Haine. "Thank you Haine-sempai" Valentine was a lot more polite because she was a lady, he was even more polite because she was trying to help. The situation was back under control as only one more boar was on the field. Valentine was relatively sure Hael could handle the last one with the potion he drank. He heard about the immolation potion and had a clue as to the effects.  He would not bother to drink the potion he was given but save it till a rainy day.

Valentine twirled his spear and attacked the second boar pup while Hael was trying to drink. He was refreshed and was allowing his partner to get the same refreshing feel. It lasted for a second before the 3rd boar pup hit him like a train. He was calm as he stood and brushed the dust off.

"By the way sempai do you have any more of the immolation potions? I do not need it now but having one on hand will be useful."

"No prob." She returned the nod to Val and smiled reassuringly. The man seemed to put in his all on the field, she was certain the team could pull through. Perhaps a chance had only thrown them off course, but they seemed to pick up momentum once more. Hael's wiry temper was placated at the slightest in light of Haine's appearance. She plopped down on the glades, crossing her legs and propping her elbows on her knees. The boars were far enough in range to leave her be.

She stayed on the sidelines, attentive to the combat before her. Val moved with concentrated precision, paired with Hael's sporadic energy with his dagger. He used no sword art. The realization caused Haine to quirk a brow. She was interrupted by the older man's voice. "Ah, yes, I've brought plenty of spares. Hold." She pulled up her menu and sent a copy to Val.

The tides had turned in their favor, momentarily. Hael watched the boar charge for Val, only to be impaled and decimated. He cheered him on and turned his attention to the only remaining mob out there. One lone boar scuffed its hooves against the grass, charging up for a rampage. Not on the boy's watch. He flipped his dagger and trained his aim at the pig. Once it stepped into range, he swooped down to puncture its hide. With a squeal, the hog thrashed about. Like music to his ears, he thought, at the excitement of finally hitting the thing for once. He hummed a chipper tune and watched the other boars  phase into range. It was like a neverending chain, a few at a time until they'd secured their goal. It was far out of sight, but they could power through this. He cracked his knuckles and surveyed the field.

Being the type of person that always put the team first had a set amount of strengths and weaknesses to it. Valentine could have taken the potion as soon as he received it but he did not want to miss the chance of taken down more boar pups. The faster and sooner they took them down the faster and sooner they could complete their quests. At first Val did not want to take one of the potions he wanted to handle it all with his own strength. When he realized it would be better to take the potion is when he asked for one.

Sage was the one that told him there is no harm in asking for help from people you trust. The Firm Anima guild were the only group of people he trusted at the moment. Val tried to perform a <<Heft>> on the boar pup. He missed as he miscalculated the speed and the boar pup ran towards Hael.

Hael surveyed the field, boar pup after another crawling into the fray. They were no longer outmatched with the aid of someone on standby, so the brunette gained confidence through the fact they would make it out alive with all the tusks they need. A thin sheen of sweat formed over his brow upon deep concentration over the pack. The boars seemed to have some intellectual understanding of each other, given from the way they'd teamed up against Val before. Clever little things. Hael would remain vigilant, although at this point, he was hoping to get hit. At the rate they were going, he did not wish to exhaust his energy. The aid of immolation would kill the thing in one fine sweep, and the rest would be history. He refocused on the two frolicking about and they'd turned their attention to him. Two hogs attempted to ambush from both sides, to which he deflected with a mere side sweep.

Valentine took the time to drink the potion while the boars were attacking Hael. It was a good time to get it out the way and make it a simple process for them to win. He chugged the potion like he did when he was in college back in the real world, no gag reflex and all skill, being inside the game did help as it was harder to gag. When Hael sidestepped the boars only one looked intent on taking the man down.

As soon as he finished the other boar that missed saw a open spot in Val. It rushed in with the rage of piggily furry before ramming into Valentine. Val would have sworn he saw the boar pup grin in satisfaction, before it burst into flames. The potion had taken effect and destroyed the poor pig pup before it could squeal for help. Valentine checked to see if he got a tusk out of it. Saddened by the missing ingredient.

Before the hoard emptied out, one rouge boar went charging at him. He fell back with a winded oof, flames licking off him and onto the mob. In a transfer of heat, the poor thing ignited in flames. With a shrill shriek, it materialized into a wisp of smoke. Good riddance.

More boars spawned into view, this time a full pack of them. The brunette gulped. They'd circled around them like a pack of wolves, scuffing their hooves at a display of intimidation. Hael snorted. "Oh yeah?" He circled around, looking for a victim to tag. There to his right was the runt of the pack, an easy pickin'. He flung his knife at one, watching the blade catch on the boar's hide. The grind was not over yet, but they were not outnumbered with their newfound aid. The potions ascertained the outcome would go smoothly. He made note to thank the blue haired beauty later.

Constantly trying to fight multiple enemies could be a bit tiring. To say it was a but tiring was a lot of an understatement. Valentine was becoming low on health and low on energy. If he could not help Hael out and defeat the boars soon he would have to stop for a rest. The rate at which the boars were dying drastically increased but he was not getting the needed materials out of it. If he could not get the materials what would be the purpose of doing the quest. More boars joined over in an attempt to take the duo out. The danger was more relaxed due to the presence of Sempai, it did not mean the pressure was not being applied.

"I have your six." Val spoke as he used a <<heft>> on the boar furthest from Hael. It was the first one he managed to connect as he got in the rhythm. Dropping the health to zero in one smooth move.
