[PP-F01] <<The Second Lesson, Is Also Free?!>>

Recommended Posts

Hael's nerves worked up at this rate. The battle was long, and arduous, but he would have anything over a situation where their lives were in danger. One boar was eliminated from the fray, in a display of brute strength. Hael clapped his hands. "Nice one, Val!" He pointed his dagger at one boar who was kicking dust in his face. He turned the other way and coughed up the sand. "Geez, did ya have to do that?" His eyes burned and he blinked heavily. He evaded the cloud of dust, moving to strike. There was nothing there, however.

The sly bastards had trotted off in favor of harassing the silver haired man instead. Agitation built up within the boy. He whistled at them to get their attention. Hopefully they would take the bait. Unwavering, they marched their tiny, stubby limbs over to the other side of the ring. He trailed behind them, with a stare reminiscent of a hawk.

Valentine was starting to breath heavy as the weight of the battle continued to tire him out. He was impressed by how springy Hael was being. Sure his partner currently had a higher level but he did not believe levels made that big of a difference. They were down to three boar pups after this Valentine was going to take a much needed breather.

<<Heft>> was activated and Valentine landed the attack on boar pup number six with relative ease. The boar pup never stood a chance as Valentine was becoming more accurate with his spear. It was split like an odd hotdog with the health bottoming out at zero. The 5th boar pup took the chance to attack Valentine while he was in his closing animations. The hit was successful and the boar burst into flames. Valentine checked the loot of the two boars while he went and sat next to Haine for a moment. The boar pup that attacked him dropped the tusk he needed while the one he attacked did not. "I am taking a break. Any more show up handle them for a moment." Valentine closed his eyes and started to rest while he was out of combat.

Haine watched the two at combat and applauded their efforts in her head. The silver head seemed more like the tactician between the two, calm and collected while he drove combat for the two. The brunette bounced about, reminiscent of a rabbit with his amount of stamina. He kept the fight lively with his little quips. In a way, it reminded her of a certain someone from what felt like a distant memory ago. He smiled softly and propped her chin on her palm. Fingers twirled the soft glades beneath her, plucking a few strands from the soil while idle.

She hummed a soft tune and kept a close watch on the battle, while her mind wandered to other things, such as her agenda for the rest of the day. There was no rest as of late, in preparation for the front lines. The mere thought of it churned her gut in a way that made her nauseous. She could find enough confidence in herself to play the part, but if Raidou entrusted her as part of the lineup, she would not disappoint him nor the rest of her guild.

"Roger that!" He watched the silver haired male step out of bounds once the boars were decimated. He shot him a thumbs up and moved  onward. It was a game of waiting and patience, with the odds in their favor, however not without one brutal fight to secure what they were here for. He narrowed his eyes, gathering his resilience.

Another, full pack spawned. Hael rolled his eyes. Those boars would not give him a break, would they? He soothed the nape of his neck and rolled his shoulders. At least he had gathered one singular tusk so far. That was progress if all else was tedious.

He moved to attack, when all three had attempted to bag on him simultaneously. He'd evaded only one, the other two boars teaming up to butt him from both sides. They paid the price, each one decimated to smoke. He marked one target in particular to aggravate.

The sensation of the sun, wind, and grass should have left a refreshing feel on Valentine. One of the few things he missed about the real world was the sensations that the game lacked. The game just always felt like it was lacking compared to what he normally got to feel. It was why even while he called it resting he was not actually asleep, he simply stood still so his energy and health gauges would go back up. When they did finally go up a tad bit after him resting he opened his eyes.

He could see Hael fighting some boar pups and holding his own ground. Valentine could have gotten up to help and enter combat. He simply chose not to so he could regain his proper energy levels. When he did regain all his energy he would go all out on a final push against the boar pups.

Surrounded by all four that wouldn't budge, he was beginning to grow bored. "Ugh, can't you just loot them for me?!" He called out across the field. "It's never gonna end."

The woman across the field, who was reading a book on the grass, waggled a finger. "Nuh-uh. This is all on you. The criteria makes sure of it." She set the book down on her lap. "Just breathe. You're gonna get what you need with a little time, hon."

He let out an exasperated sigh and faced the boars. "Alright, I'm just gonna have at em'." Without a sword art in his name, he could only do so much. The boy repeated the old monotonous slide and stab movement. His best could only swipe at thin air. He was resilient when the enemy came back to retort. He took the brunt of one hit, to whom his immolation decimated.

Valentine got up from boredom. He was healed up enough and could have continued fighting. The only reason he did not was so that Hael could catch up on the quest. Valentine believed that Hael was a bit unlucky he should have plenty of time to look for materials while the man was fighting.

Valentine walked to the mounds a little bit off from the fields. The mounds had various holes in them like a little quarry that held crystals. It was a rumor that the crystals found here were really boar poop but no one could confirm it. The rumor made some of the players scared. Valentine was not scared because even if it was true it was not like he had to worry about disease in the game. As far as he knew the game did not have a pestilence feature. Poison was a thing but it was uncommon and hardly ever on the lower floors. He searched in a mound for a crystal to come out empty handed.

The tides were beginning to shift, to ways unforeseen, but it was enough to keep his resilience steady. Fueled by the blue haired captain's words, he narrowed his eyes at the opponents. They were meddlesome, but of little consequence if he could keep his pace and health up. Health, in fact, was not the main issue here. The issue was a mixture of his poor luck, among other factors that strained his odds. But if a pretty lady believed in him, why couldn't he?

The teenager was met with two rampaging boars who had collided into him from both sides. He fell back, dagger flying out of his hand. Before the others could come to chain the attack, he scampered back to his feet. He knelt down and swiped his dagger back into hold. He panted, a bit of his stamina depleting. No rest for the wicked. He squared his shoulders and continued on with the brawl.

The soft digital wind rustled in his hair, stirring up the strange feeling of memories. In the real world Valentine would often hang out at the families spring estate building in New York. It was a tall building that was five minutes away from time square. He would hang out with Sage on the top floor and they would often talk. So strong winds always reminded him of his man.

A rigorous shaking was applied to his head as if trying to shake the cobwebs out of his mind. Some days had an easier of time of dealing with his situation. He brought his focus back to the task at hand. Reaching into another mound he was checking for a usable crystal. His inability to concentrate made it unsurprising that his find came back with nothing. Valentine just believed if he was more focused and determined it would be easier. His attention was set on the next pile.

With the shift of the winds, so had the tides turned in battle. He switched up his tactic. Instead of moving about, he would let them crash into him. He stood with arms spread out, feeling the boar's angry tusks pick at him. On impact, they ignited in flames, sizzling into a fine smoke. They vanished into thin air, two leaving behind a set of tusks. Eager, Hael snatched it up in a heartbeat. "YES!" He called across the field, in announcement to both his comrade and the woman surveyed the field. "I finally got em' all! MAN!" He pumped his fist and returned to the fray. Just one more nuisance remained, circling around him and sizing him up. It was a poor display of intimidation. The boy snorted. "Yeah, keep bein' tough. You're bacon now." She popped his jaw with his palm and flexed his fingers. He seized his grip on the blade and hollered over to Val.

Valentine was looking through a pile and could not find a crystal. The crystal spawn rates were low for the piles but it was practically abysmal. If the drop rate was too low why would he need to stay. He felt liked he wasted enough time so he made his way back to where Hael was fighting. The man still seemed a bit energetic like a child that was given coffee laced with cocaine. It was a better look then him being dead.

Stretching his shoulders he leveled his spear before getting ready. He was going for a surprise attack on the boar pups when he saw an opening. It was better for him to wait for an opening then to interrupt Hael. If he interrupted his partner it could mess with the flow of battle and throw them all into a bad situation. Valentine had the firm belief of doing things properly before they could become a bad habit.

With all the tusks collected, Hael stepped out of battle. He gave a glance over his shoulder at the silver haired male, spear pointed and ready to strike. "Have at em'. I got what I needed. Just holler at me for support, kay?" He shot him a thumbs up. "I'll be pickin' herbs by the lady." He felt a sense of guilt wash over him, for he had not a clue who she was or what her name was. The only higher ups he'd been around often around to remember were the provisional captain, Kiluia. The cool, kickass martial artist who'd helped him out with his quest.

He could only hope to be that great one day.

He traveled over to the bluenette, who was relaxing on the grass. She alternated her attention from her book and back to the battle, keeping a close eye lest anything go wrong. He knelt down, searching for a herb that turned out to be a deformed blade of grass.  A frown painted his features.

When the other boar pups went down Valentine found himself with an opening. The boar pup was hit with <<heft>> that lifted it off the ground. The health went yellow, then red, before bottoming out at zero. The boar shattered into the games will known death effects. Valentine looted the boar and found he had all three boar pup tusks to complete the mission. Quickly he compared with Hael and was happy that they were both done. As long as they finished they could move on with the next part and hopefully finish the mission off soon.

"We are missing sempai." Valentine would have no issue with going off with Hael to finish a quest. If he left sempai on the other hand he would feel guilty about it. she came all the way out to help, and Val doubted she would leave without saying something. The people in his guild could be weird just not rude.

She had wandered off at the sight of something glimmering close by in the field. She was in range of the others, however a simple section of shrubbery had concealed her from view. From all the grinds she'd been on with Kiluia, Haine was astute when it came to treasure. Part of the grinding tag team, the repetition of the grind was ingrained in her brain. She equipped a shovel carved specifically for treasure by Griswold, and dug up a shallow, small box. The compact shape was not to be underestimated. Sometimes a real gem could be concealed within. She hummed a chipper tune, working away at the lock. She was oblivious to how quickly the battle had resolved after she set forth for the treasure.

The key she needed was missing, much to her dismay. It was a lesser chest, however, so a simple pin removed from her hair was enough to do the trick.

After Val, he'd noticed the absence of their captain. "Oh yeah, where'd she run off to?" He took the lead, stepping ahead. "Let's go find her so we can say thanks." He moved through the field, stopping in his tracks at the sound of something rustling nearby. The source of the noise directed at a bush, a piece of blue hair tangled in it. He perked a brow and stepped close to investigate the situation. There she'd been, tinkering with what looked like a locked wooden box. A patch of loose dirt had been left from where she'd dug up the treasure. "Ooh. What's in that?" Hael stepped close to observe. He all but invaded her personal space in excitement of seeing a treasure chest up close. His luck alone was not enough to pull up a chest. Maybe his friend could, but he was better off in his own right with skills and prowess.

Valentine may have went with Hael but he was more well behaved. He thought it would be rude to hover over someone that was trying to work. It was the only reason that he stood back. He heard rumors of chests exploding or triggering traps. He had a potion on hand so he could at least save them if something happened. Even as he stood back his gaze never left the people in front of him. As he grew closer to Hael he felt it prudent to remind the man to stay weary.

"Beware of traps." It was a simple warning that Valentine believed Hael could understand. If Valentine felt that Hael would keep his guard down he would step in to intervene. He refused to let his new found best friend parish underneath his care. The sempai should be strong enough to watch her own back, not that Valentine would willingly abandon her either.

She slipped the bobby pin from her neatly braided hair, long, flowing bangs cascading over her eyes like a curtain. She worked at the lock, sliding the pin into the groove. After a moment of wrestling, a resounding click signaled success. The chest flew open, tipping over. Its dusty contents spilled onto the plush grass. "Ooh, lookie what we got here." She held the loot up in the air, poking and prodding to see if there was anything worth of value. As expected of something on the lower floors, it was just a neatly packed parcel of uncommon oddities and a sliver of cash. She shrugged her shoulders. Oh well, it was worth a try if anything.

She noticed the two others approaching. "Oh, you're all done already? My apologies." She dusted her hands and stood up on her feet. "I haven't seen you recruits before, so I'll introduce myself. Haine, assault captain." She searched among the duo. "You might have started off on a wrong foot, but you pulled through. Good job, team. Don't be afraid to reach out like you did, we are like family." She smiled softly.

He paid heed to the blue haired woman opening the chest. She worked with precision, it made the boy wonder how often she went treasure hunting. She seemed like an elusive lady, a bit intimidating despite her kindness due to her aura. She put the items back in the crate and turned to them.

"Here, you two can discuss the treasure. I think it'll give you a boost. Consider it my treat."

Hael accepted the chest and turned to Val. "Woah. Lookit all of this. I think you deserve it. You busted your ass the hardest here." It was an atypical act of generosity from the teenager, who would've much rather kept every bit to himself. His actions proved that Val was in good graces.

The captain received a sudden message which urged for her attention. She skimmed it for a moment and marked the coordinates. "Oh, duty calls!" She swiped away the menu and clasped her hands together. "Anyways, I'll see you two around. I've something important to tend to."

And with that, she crushed a teleport crystal.

Valentine did not think to hard about it before putting it away. He thought for a moment before explaining himself after all. He did not want to start a problem with Hael when it could be avoided. "I am putting it away so we can have someone at the guild examine it later. If you want to give me a bigger share I will accept it as long as you accept a bigger share next time."  Val was unsure if this was the most he had spoken to Hael. "Now we must finish our mission." Val started walking back to the Lyle's workshop.

The trip did not take long as he was putting a dash of briskness into his pace. Upon arrival his quest log beeped indicating he finished. The satisfaction lasted for a moment before he was given another quest. Valentine hated chain quests the most if it felt like it was pointless. He wanted experience points he just did not have the time to farm them. He would make plans to see Hael tomorrow as he got ready to leave.

She bid them ado and crushed a teleport crystal for the wintry wonderland she knew and loved. A timer had went off for a quest reminder. Drat! She was beyond late. She hoped her guild mates wouldn't chew her ear out for being just over fifteen minutes late. The urgency of an SOS had triggered her to drop all else in favor of protecting the duo. She came to observe them in battle, and for the most part, the two were decent fights in their own right. Their power would naturally amplify with practice and patience. The main issue with today's quest was mere tedium.

As soon as she entered the wintry settlement, the frosty winds nipped at her skin. As she breathed out, she felt her skin turning rosy. The woman quickly perused her inventory in search of some warmth, be it through a scarf or an extra coat to go on top.
