It all started well, and Nari found herself dropping into the typical rhythm of conflict, a dance of death and blade, that felt familiar to her after all the time she'd spent engaging in Aincrad's dangers. She could see, out of the corner of her eyes, as the others went about their own personal conflicts, but she found herself focusing on her own - knowing that dangers that came with getting distracted. They'll need to take care of themselves for now, just as you need to take care of yourself. 

"This is going to take a few moments...and damn, but you hit hard..." Not that she was overly worried, but she found herself realising just how difficult this fight could be if she didn't keep her guard up at all times. It would be far too simple to rush into the combat without a care, and quickly find herself on the losing end. Thankfully, for the moment at least, she was keeping her calm and collectiveness, dancing around the various strikes made by the horseman before her. She watched for the openings that she needed in order to overpower the defences of the creature, eyeing the horse to see if it could somehow be manipulated in her favour. "It's a good thing I have a spear...spears love horses..."

With Death done and dusted, Morningstar moved on to the next target. He left his new horse's side in a flash of blinding gold, streaking across the battlefield. He kicked off into the air and flew sword first into Conquest's rider. It dug into the horseman's chest armor, the force of the attack pushing him from his horse's back. Pestilence hit the ground with a metal thud, incapacitated by Morningstar's stun.

The blonde had tripped on the horse's saddle and fell close by their unmoving foe. He sat up, only slightly dazed, and used his sword to leverage himself back to his feet. Katoka's warning of the poison-coated arrows would no longer be a nuisance to the party. Courteously, he left the kill for her, considering she had done all of the heavy lifting. He was a lot of things, but a thief of kills would not make the list.

"I'm jealous of his bow," Morningstar admitted. "I like bows."

Racing across the battlefield to join a second fray, Freyd felt suddenly sluggish about halfway along.  His legs felt laden down, as if someone had instantly poured lead into his pockets - and he had a LOT of pockets.  Staggering through the next few steps, but eventually recovering, he spotted Nari ahead.  The purple-haired knightess was holding her own, as he expected.  Spreading themselves out as they had just made it impossible for her to properly pull and hold all of the riders' attention as a tank normally would.  From their time in the last raid, he knew that Nari could certainly hold her own, but most tanks would lack the damage output required to quickly put one of these mobs down. Famine's unusual leeching aura was also likely affecting her.

"Nice work," he barked, trying to draw the mob's attention to no effect.  Nari'd clearly locked her presence in its sights, as any good tank should.  A new tactic was required.  

"Hey, buddy, why the long face?" Throwing his full weight against Drought's flank was enough to jostle it out of position to threaten his comrade and better expose the rider.  "Famine!  Ooof.  Buddy... you need to eat something.  You're looking half-dead!"  The gaunt figure opened its toothy maw as if to hoarsely roar defiance, possibly intending to overwhelm the Whisper with its breath alone.  Instead, its eyes bulged wide as Freyd leapt high, twisting in mid-air to cram a full  and hastily materialized honey bun forcefully into the horseman's gullet.  What was surely meant to be an intimidating moment devolved rapidly into comedy as the darkly cowled attacker clenched his other hand around Famine's cloak and used his own body weight and momentum to flip the mob violently head over heels. Freyd landed two feet from Nari with a hefty puff of dust, joined a second later by the bowled over crash and shattering of their common enemy.  Famine's brittle bones lacked the digital calcium required to sustain that kind of impact, helped along by Nari's pre-existing needling and the flaring of Freyd's hungry hand wraps.  

"Good job keeping him distracted." 

A quick wink to Nari, and he was already racing to aid with the last remaining horseman, seriously doubting he would even make it halfway before the others finished it off.

A wild grin spread across Katoka's face as her eyes fell upon Pestilence, his arms and legs scrambling as he attempted to get back on his feet. She let out a nearly manic laugh that caused her enemy to stop in his tracks, his head slowly turning in her direction. The ground beneath the samurai exploded in a cloud of rock and dust once again, but not due to an arrow this time. She had rocketed forward with enough force that she had left a crater of her own in the ground behind her.

It was over in an instant, her katana already sliding back into its saya as she stood several feet from her opponent. He erupted in a shower of pixels and light shortly after, leaving behind his steed for Kat to tame. The small blonde laughed again, this time her girlish charm returned as she clapped her hands in delight and turned around to her party members. "We did it! Thank you Morningstar for the assist, he was starting to get on my nerves."

"So," Katoka asked as her eyes fell upon the horse nearby, "What do we do next exactly?"

Freyd stepped in from the side, his own fight clearly finished and coming to the rescue, finishing off Famine in a swift wave of attacks that left the horse without rider, and Nari's ascension to the newly appointed position open for her to take. She let her muscles relax, stretching them out and nodding to Freyd in turn as she stepped up towards the horse, placing a hand on it's side in an attempt to comfort it. "Thanks, that helped quicken this whole event up a ton...it went a lot easier than I had expected, to be honest. I guess now all that's left is..."

She paused as she glanced at the new marker, leading them directly into the heart of the corruption itself. Cardinal is always so dramatic with these things. It's like a child, in so many ways...at least it knows limitations. A shiver passed down her spine as she decided not to pull on that thread of thought. They'd come this far with ease, the hope was that the remainder would be as simple going forwards. Pulling herself up onto the back of the white horse, she glanced over at the others, confirming that each fight had ended before pointing in the direction they needed to head next.

"Shall we ride off into the sunset and disappear in true horsepeople style?"

"Any time," he nodded to Katoka politely.

He marched back over to Doom, which lowered itself in response. Climbing onto the horse's back felt liberating, as if a surge of dark strength erupted through his body. The same bright blue, flame-like aura that surrounded Death crept up Morningstar's arms and legs. In his hand, his blade took a new form, morphing and elongating into a polearm—Death's scythe. He gave it a twirl, happily astonished by the new weapon he held. Not that he knew how to properly use it, of course. He hoped the system would help out with that.

Taking the reigns, he led Doom to the rest of his group as Acting Death. Nari had mounted her horse, Drought, already. Instead of Doom's blue embers, Drought's were green. "Y'know," he smirked, leaning the scythe against his shoulder, "I get the appeal. I may not want to give this up."

He took a look at the other horses, who had yet to be mounted. Red and gold were their fiery manes. Wrath and Conquest. "Hop on, then. Let's see how you look."

2d2e0a4466d679bc673c771269c0c639.thumb.jpg.d06de659314d94bbe0380cedc518bdf7.jpgWandering back to the flaming nightmare that had been left behind in the wake of War's utter embarrassment, Freyd found it to have simmered down to a more manageable midnight coal.  Its eyes were still red, watching him with curiosity even as it chewed upon the last vestiges of its previous rider's fractured fractal form.  Bits of orange dust disintegrated as they fell from its scorched and blackened maw.

"Spoils of War, eh?  How'd those taste?"  A snuffling neigh and sneeze were his reply.  "That bad? Maybe too much hot sauce.  Why don't we rebrand a bit and give this job a touch of Whisper's flare?"  Grasping the reigns and thereby donning the mantle of War, Freyd channeled his intimate knowledge of the gemini's talents to alter his form to better suit his adopted role.  His cowl, so long a symbol of concealment and mystery, shifted to spill down his shoulders and sides like a cloak and draping to shroud both rider and horse.  All traces of living humanity vanished from his appearance, skin subsumed and replaced by the very fabric embodying his inner struggles - the war within himself.

Freyd could fathom no more apt a manner to face off against the darkness blighting the floor he long called home than by confronting it with his own.  Wrath agreed.  Furious rage fading from the mount's features was soon replaced instead by a cold and infinite void; an insatiable and ineffable hunger that would annihilate any obstacle to its relentless advance.  It was like watching destruction manifest itself, a cloud of miasmic black haze billowing out from their combined figure to scourge the very substance of surrounding reality as if its presence was anathema.  

Here rode the true terror of Aincrad: its Faceless Lord summoned from the shadows girded by wrath and ready for battle; nay, victory.  Stretching out a cloth-bound hand, Freyd held his arm aloft, watching as liquid nothingness dripped from his open palm and stretch until its vanguard nearly touched the ground.  Clenching his fist to the sound of absent yet shattering glass, a blade took form lacking in one dimension yet bounded by none. It broke the rules just by existing.  Samael's Pride, restored in vision to the truth of its origins, cleaved to its master and wielder's bidding.  This was an instrument incapable of yielding: unstoppable and unforgiving.  This, what lay in the coldest depths of the Whispers heart against which he'd struggled for so long.

"Hello, old friend," Freyd whispered to his weapon, his voice hoarse and unrecognizable, seeming to echo from the hollows dwelling behind all things.  A kick of his heels and instantly they had rejoined the rest of their companions, ready for epic, imminent confrontation. 

"Nice looks," he added for each of them in turn.  "What say we give all this a whirl and see what happens?"

The samurai slowly approached the stead that Pestilence had left behind. The creature nervously stepped from side to side, seemingly unsure of what to do without a master to command it. It's form was disgusting, at least to the untrained eye. Open wounds bled profusely, the blood that leaked from them a sickly black. It reminded Kat of the cuts she would leave on other enemies, a product of the blighted enhancement on her weapon. Once she made this connection the worry in the pit of her stomach seemed to lessen and she reached out with an open hand to attempt to steady the horse.

The animal stopped its anxious shuffling as it sensed the player's approach. Katoka placed a hand on a clean patch of skin on the horses nose, patting it softly. "I suppose you and I are going to be a team for a bit huh?" It snorted in response and she let out a chuckle before stepping around to the well worn saddle. "Well, here goes nothing."

The blonde grasped hold of the saddle horn and pulled herself up, adjusting herself in a position that would be as comfortable as possible. Once she was satisfied she grabbed old of the reigns and smiled, looking over to her companions. "Looks like I got myself a--" she stopped as she noticed the members of her party having taken on new forms and even weapons. She tilted her head to the side in confusion just before she felt something oozing up her leg. With a sheik of panic and a few well used expletives she attempted to jump off the back of the horse. She was not successful in the slightest.

The ooze engulfed her in a matter of seconds, covering her from head to toe before electricity began to arc and snap from the now black glob in human shape. With a loud snap and hiss the goop was expelled from Katoka, now she sat atop her stead clad in a Kyudogi and Hakama. A Japanese longbow now rested on her back with a quiver of arrows now at her hip where her sword once was. Most noticeable was her once blonde hair that was now a dark black.

With panicked gasps of air the samurai looked at herself and her new gear, then looked to her party members. "What in the hell is wrong with this damn game?"

The others had mounted their newly received steeds with as much enthusiasm as Nari had felt, the very forms of their beings shifting as they claimed their new positions as the Horsemen of death. Although Nari had felt little change in herself - either a good sign, or a bad one, she wasn't quite sure yet - the others had seen some transformations in their very appearance. She nodded to Morningstar as the man settled in with obvious comfort, before turning to watch as Freyd not only fed his new friend, but also donned the appearance of death itself. Shaking her head at the obvious display, she couldn't help but giggle a little, knowing how on par it was for his behaviour. 

Her eyes shifted as Katoka began to climb upon her horse, but she found herself looking back at Freyd as the final member of their party settled in. That was, until the sudden shriek caused Nari to shift her attention back to Katoka. She watched, in both amazement and curious horror, as the form of the player changed before her very eyes, becoming something entirely new - and very clearly something they didn't desire to become. As the new form came into view, Nari found her eyes widening - but not in disgust or fear. 

"Well, shit, Kat...you look amazing. Like...if you were single, I'd ask you out, amazing." There was a slight awe to her voice, and Nari found herself blushing in response to her own words, as much as Katoka's new form.

Trying to turn away from the awkwardness of what she'd just said and created, she turned instead towards their destination, urging the horse beneath her onwards in an attempt to leave behind her own words. What may have been a long ride felt extremely short as Nari pulled up on the reigns, eyeing the thing before her and noticing the name that clearly denounced a threat. "Blightbound, huh. Well, you'll not harm a single hair on K-on our heads!"

"Woah. You guys look cool. I'm just a smoke machine," Morningstar said, green mist spiraling his limbs. He didn't mention Kat's hair. It looked fine, but he preferred the blonde.

He was most jealous of her bow. Sure, Death's scythe was the most wonderful thing he had ever held, but how many people could say they'd used a bow in game? There's always next time, he thought.

No socialization time would be permitted, however, as Nari had begun their next fight: the Apocalypse, or something. Two Blightbound Monstrosities shot out of the ground, immediately stunned by the purple-haired knightess' assault. Morningstar and Doom followed her lead, his brand new scythe reaching out far. He swept wide, catching a Blightbound Monstrosity as he galloped by.

His adjusted numbers alone were incredible. He had never hit a mob that hard in his life, even with buffs. He pulled Doom's reigns, circling around and speeding in for another swipe.

"Don't sell yourself short, Morningstar - you're absolutely smokin'.  Nari's completing killing it with the whole Death thing.  Meanwhile, Kat... well, let's just say that Famine is also leaving us parched?"  He was grinning with every word, but his cowl's extension had swallowed the entirety of what little was normally showing of his face.  Watching Nari and Star wade into the first wave of blighted minions, Freyd followed in soon after and leaving Katoka to mop up from range.  

Unlike his predecessor, Freyd was never one for the frenzied rage of the warmonger, his feasting focusing instead on the cold, ruthless calculus of utter annihilation.  Plunging his blade's nothingness first into the more wounded of the two staggered abominations popped it like an overinflated balloon.  Motes, instantly spraying wide in all directions, covered his approach upon the second.  A deep slice met with grunting satisfaction as the Whisper cleaved half of his enemy aside like it was made of tissue.  Wrath's action mirrored his thoughts, dancing among the shadows cast by the dying light of his previous kill, wheeling on the spot like the flicking of a blackened flame. Blade extended like a shadow's longing, he drove it through the second blight and drank in its nothingness to claim it for himself.  The void was ever hungry.

"MOAR!" Freyd barked, seething without realizing it.  "Katoka.  Find us another pair.  These lot were lightweights."  Like the darkened barrel of a primed and loaded canon, the cowl swiveled in search of other targets, eager to continue the fray... no, spread it.  Tension spread down his back in anticipation while some fledgling thing withered within him, crying out in feeble protest onlyto be  silenced by the dominance of war unleashed.  

Something is very wrong...

Montjoy felt the cold growing within his caster, his old counterpart renewed and invigorated by the donned persona.  It had lain in wait, coiled and dormant, but seizing immediately upon its moment.  Freyd had just given his dark heart what it most desired, and his conscience feared what would be done with it.  Anyone who oddly found themselves staring at the ground in such an awkward moment would find the Whisper's shadow staring up at him with a palpable air of concern.

The now dark haired samurai attempted to take all of her companions compliments as best as she could, however her cheeks still managed to flush. She looked down at herself and was taken aback by how drastic a change had overcome her appearance. Her shock didn't last long as two new enemies appeared on the battlefield, grotesque and shambling zombie like creatures approached the newly mounted players.

Katoka watched as Nari, Morningstar, and Freyd all managed to wipe the floor with them rather quickly. Their new weapons lashing out and causing the freshly spawned monsters to explode in a shower of light. Freyd's reaction was the only one that gave her any concern. She would let his enthusiasm for the battle pass for the moment as it could have just been Freyd being Freyd, though she would keep an eye on him just in case this was something that leaned more towards the spoopy variety.

Pulling on the reigns of her stead Kat turned her eyes to scan their surroundings, steering the horse beneath her in a new direction. Within moments two more enemies spawned in the distance, "Got a couple over her!" she called as she gripped her bow. Drawing an arrow from her quiver she nocked and drew back in a long fashion, stopping as her hand reached her cheek. The familiar whine of a charging sword art filled her ears and she felt her body relax. The long bow felt like her katana deep down.

Electricity began to spark around her as energy gathered itself in the point of the arrowhead. With a subtle motion she simply let go and the arrow flew, streaking toward it's target in the blink of an eye. With a flash of light and a dull thunk the Blightbound creature tilted it's head back just before a blot of lightning struck it head on. It's nearby companion getting singed by the attack made an attempt to retaliate, but fulling missed it's mark. A smirk appeared on the samurai's face as she looked to her party members, "Who's up next?"

They made headway into the creatures, tearing the first two apart only to find themselves quickly facing two others. Nari found her attention drifting, on a consistent basis, back towards Katoka's form - entirely taken with the samurai woman's new appearance. After the third time of having glanced over, she shook her head, muttering to herself in order to refocus on the fight. "Hey. Hey. Pay attention, or someone is going to get hurt..."

"This whole being Death and Damnation thing is kinda...you know, cool in a way. I see why the bad guys always want this. I mean look at how we're slicing through them. Almost like it's nothing..." Even as she said it, a sudden sombreness came over her; a realisation that it was almost too easy. A mixture of feelings swarmed over her, from distaste, to distrust, as she tried to figure out what was going on with the quest now. She rarely trusted Cardinal, especially when things seemed to be going smoothly. "Not to ruin the mood...but does anyone see anything alarming around here? I don't trust this...it's too easy..."

Even as she said it, she took another wide slash towards the creatures, looking to lock them in place once more with her stunning strike. If Cardinal was going to make it easy for them, at least for the moment, she was going to take full advantage of that - even if it meant that she would have to be leery later on.

It was a good observation. Morningstar sliced through a Blightbound Monstrosity, severing it in two like it was butter. He reigned in his horse closer to Nari so he did not need to shout. "Nah. I'm gonna live ignorantly and enjoy the easiness of this. It's not often the system gives us a break."

He took a good, long look at Freyd as he rode by. Morningstar refrained from saying anything, but he seemed off—mounting his horse and donning the shadowy cowl had flicked a switch in him that the blonde found oddly familiar. He glanced down at his hands, forgetting that Death's scythe had taken the place of the blade he normally wielded. He was no stranger to losing control, and while he had no evidence to back his claim, he thought that seething wrath might have been a symptom of claiming War's steed. It would wear off afterwards, he hoped.

Putting the change of his rampaging friend's personality to the back of his mind, he carried on. Another monstrosity was spawning in alongside staggering number three. It formed dark as mud, molding like clay into a clone of its fallen brethren.

Streaking past his allies like dusk chasing a setting sun, Freyd explodes through the centre of the remaining mob scattering it to the corners of four completely absent winds.  Only then did his companions notice what he hardly seemed to have.  The Whisper's goal had never been the lone remnant from their current fray, but a locked bead on yet another pair beyond already surging forth from tainted soil to challenge them.  Eerily, neither horse nor rider made the slightest sound as they rained methodical chaos down upon the field, large swaths of amorphous, monstrous wrongness being smeared every which way as the man's slender blade swung to devour or spray whole sections of their prey about the ground.  One might wonder whether the lot of them had become shellshocked, save that their own voices cut through his wake's emptiness like clarion calls.  It all felt unnatural, which was saying something given their circumstances plus the amply twisted environs.  

Freyd might have been cackling madly as he surged, but who could tell or know for certain - if even himself.

Once again a creature exploded into a shower of light and sound, only to be replaced by yet another. "These guys just don't know when to quit do they?" Katoka nocked another arrow, "How many of them do we have to take out?"

Firing another lightning infused shot, the samurai squinted from the light of the explosion. Various detritus rained down on the battlefield as she steered her horse to round the new crater she had made in the ground. "Watch out for the hole!" she called, "Still getting use to this bow!"

Kat readied herself, drawing another arrow and watching the blighted creatures as her party members readied their own attacks. If this was going to turn into a long drawn out battle, then they would have to be vigilant. She hoped that they could find and destroy the source of whatever corruption was summing the monsters as soon as possible.

They just kept coming, and as Nari saw another shatter into pieces, being replaced by a duplicate copy of the creature as it stepped out from somewhere that had provided cover for it, she couldn't help but squeal a bit in rage. Striding forwards, she caused her horse to spin slightly on the spot, as if an olden time general turning to call out to their soldiers. The image didn't feel fitting to Nari, somehow, and even as she spoke aloud, she felt silly doing so.

"Everyone make sure to stick together! It doesn't matter how many come, so long as we're aligned to face them, they will falter and fall! Katoka, keep up the great work! Morningstar, Freyd, with me! Charge these bastards and send them back to whatever hells they arose from early this morning in the most incorrect decision they've ever made in their nine second lives!" Perhaps she had gotten a bit carried away, but as she turned back and readied herself, she realised she didn't really care. They were here to play a roleplaying game, and that's what she'd do; even if only for a single moment of their entire existence here.

She gave the horse beneath her a tap with her heels, urging the beast on towards the Blightbounds, determined to at least lead the other two in their mad attack against the creatures. She wasn't sure how many they would need to bring down, but she did know that they wouldn't be here forever. The game wouldn't do that to us, surely. I mean, that would just be evil

Nari's call came from behind him. He turned to rejoin his party, slashing through the remaining Blightbound Monstrosity on the way back. Without the opportunity for a break, two more spawned from its disintegrating body. They writhed as they formed, building into the not-quite-humanoid beings that threatened the fearful NPCs of the floor. Their bodies were crimson, like flesh but with skeletal physiques. Black draped over their bodies, cloaking their horrific appearances. They radiated evil, more so than any of the four horsemen had.

And yet the party cut them down like they were nothing but fodder mobs. Morningstar pulled on the reigns, stopping near Nari. He wondered if Freyd had the capabilities of being cooperative in his current state. "It's not just me, right?" He quietly asked Nari. He made a gesture towards Freyd. "He's off? Not that he isn't as lethal as ever, I've just never seen him so... excited."

Falling in alongside Katoka's charge, Wrath burst forward to chase the arrow loosed from her bow only to veer left as the temporary archer's shot found its mark.  Fortunately, there were others.  Reckless abandon jointly unleashed with ruthless calculus manifesting both aspects of Freyd's psyche in a single instant.  One mob felt the concussive gravity of Samael's pride in a brilliant flash of white.  Its counterpart felt the sting of the infinite hunger within as the weapon's sword form cleaved clean through, leaving a massive glaring wound where its digital flesh should have been.  Behind both, the keening, maddening wail of oblivion screeched, and Freyd still made no sound.  He might as well have been a ghost of himself, riding down everything in his path, all features and evidence of humanity vanished - sunken or swallowed into his guise to leave only the silent shell of war.  The more observant among his allies might also have noticed that the green icon, ubiquitous to all players, was gone from over his head.

The cowl itself swiveled robotically, surveying the field for more targets, analyzing the few that remained and how best to obliterate them all.  Inside, a fledgling voice screamed in panicked, silent alarm, achieving nothing.

In rapid succession Katoka loosed two more arrows, each one sending shock waves through the air as they punched their way into the disgusting monsters that seemed to never stop spawning. Electricity once again lashed out of the wounds, jumping back and forth between the two like a shocking game of hot potato. A dark liquid oozed from the holes left from her arrows that made the ground underneath them hiss and boil.

Kat tugged on the reigns of her steed as she changed her course, stopping near her allies and following their gaze. "What's up?" she asked as her eyes stopped on Freyd, or what was supposed top be Freyd. She felt her blood run cold as she franticly tried to look for the green cursor above his head. "Oh no. Oh no no no."

Her grip tightened on her weapon and a shaking hand drew another arrow from her quiver. "He doesn't seem to be focused on us, but if he shows the slightest bit of aggression at anyone other than these things, we may need to... snap him out of it." She looked at Nari and Morningstar, "Try to stay out of his way."
