[PP - F01] KnightessCiela Joins the Battle | <<The First Lesson>>

Recommended Posts

As KnightessCiela logged in, she took in the beautiful sights of the area. She spent a long time in the character creator and she was able to make her character look almost identical to her. Which she found out worked in her favor since virtually nothing changed once the announcement came through that our actual appearances would be used. She stands at 5'4". Her copper red hair reaches just past her shoulders. She was wearing a baby pink dress with spaghetti straps that fell just above her knees.

During the first day, she wanted to just take in the sights as this place was so beautiful. It was surreal. "This is even prettier than it looked on the box!!" As she explored the Town of Beginnings, she ran around talking to random NPCs that didn't really matter because in RPGs you never know! As her first day came to a close, she attempted to log out. She saw that the log out button was missing from the menu. "Must just be a bug, that happens with new releases", immediately thinking this is just a bug and will be fixed she just shrugs it off and then... The announcement came. She stood stunned before the GM as he stated that there would be no logging out and that death was permanent both real, and virtual. Which is when the panic set in. Her hand covered her mouth as she began to softly sob, worried that she would never escape. She decided from that day forward she would be better off if she just hid herself away and stayed far away from the battle, never leaving the comforts of the Town Of Beginnings.

What she originally thought to be a hyperfixation for a week turned out to be much much longer. She kept up with the game progress and specifically with the front lines. She heard about the recent decline in the clearing the game and has decided to attempt to help out. Armed with only her previous gaming knowledge and her starting armor, she left the safety of her home. "Let's do this... I guess?"

Once again Wulfrin found himself gravitating towards the first floor for his material gathering sessions. The sprawling cityscape of the Town of Beginnings just as he had left it, bustling with players too frightened to leave the safety of its walls and NPCs calling out attempting to drive their business. He had one destination, his favorite low level fishing spot towards the North East portion of the floor, near Tolbana. He gave a friendly wave to one of the guards at the northern gate as he left. Marv, simply reciprocated with another of his trademark idle animations, a large yawn signifying his lack of interest in defending the city. Wulfrin couldn't blame him, as floor 1 was one of the tamer floors. The only floor that was possibly more beginner friendly was floor 22 where he had his smithing shop.

It wasn't too far outside the gates where he saw another player roaming alone aimlessly and without much purpose. She carried no weapon and wore a set of basic plate armor. Judging by it's simplistic design and lack of use signified a new player had gotten the courage to leave safety. The good news is they had decided not to start on the upper floors, but the mobs of floor 1 would still attack if you came too close. He decided it was best to not leave them to wander on their own for two long, or they might end up with their name on the Monument of Life.

"Pardon me," Wulfrin spoke with a cordial tone. "Floor 1 may be know as the starter floor, but that doesn't mean you can just wander around unarmed. Where are you headed? Maybe I can help you out." The man that approached appeared to be battle hardened with a knee length red coat adorned with additional armor plates. At his left hip rest a longsword. A pair of earcuffs peaked ever so slightly out from behind his medium length brown hair. His red eyes had a glimmer of confidence in them that showed his experience within the game.

As the man spoke to her, she was so startled that she almost leapt into the air. She hadn't been approached by an actual player since launch day, so her already non-existent people skills were DEFINITELY rusty. She turned to face the man. She looked at him, but did not make eye contact at all. "Y-you can't just pop up behind people like that! Had I not been so preoccupied, I might have bonked you! Or what if I was a serial killer?" She twirled her hair a bit as she looked around nervously. She admitted, "I don't know where I'm going, I figured if I wandered aimlessly for long enough I'd find a quest sooner or later."

"What are you doing on the lower floors? No offense but, you definitely do not seem like you belong on the first floor." She looked him over and noticed the confident look in his eyes. This guy was definitely cocky and she knew the type. He definitely rushes into battle without thinking. But I guess having someone cocky and battle hardened in your party is better than going it alone.

"At least you have the right attitude," Wulfrin held his hands up in surrender. "At least it was me and not a PKer. With out a weapon, you'll not be doing much to defend yourself."

Wulfrin listened to the newbie's explanation of her situation, twirling her hair between her fingers sheepishly. Based off her verbiage, he guessed she was probably looking for The First Few Lessons. It was odd that she hadn't run into Dorian yet. Despite being the mayor of Tolbana, the city closest to the floor labyrinth, Dorian White usually was hunting for new players to hand out his questline to. However, there were times when he just would not appear within The Town of Beginnings. This meant some new player had to make their way through the fields to Tolbana to start the quest chain. Wulfrin had already completed the first two lessons himself, but that third one still eluded him. Well that wasn't entirely true. It was more like he was avoiding completing the quest in favor of more rewarding quests on higher floors. The only reason he was even back was to fish.

"I'm down here to gather some materials," Wulfrin replied with his reason for coming down to the lower floors. "I tend to fish in the area where I completed the first tutorial quest. It's a gathering quest, so I try and keep my eye out for newbies like yourself. I escort them out there and fish while they gather their required materials. the quest can be a long one if RNG isn't on your side, so it ends up being beneficial for all parties involved. I'm headed towards Tolbana, if you want to tag a long. 90% of the quests on this floor start there, so there are plenty of options."

"You never know who you can trust nowadays. Honestly, for all I know you COULD be a PKer. Besides, these hands are rated E for everyone! Anyone tries to hurt me and I'll bonk em!" She smiled at him devilishly as she karate chopped the air with vigor and might. After finishing her display she looked up to the man. "I feel quite rude, I haven't even asked you what your name is or given you mine." She twirled her fingers in her hair and held out her hand to shake his. "I'm KnightessCiela, but if it's easier you can call me just Knightess or just Ciela."

"Are you sure it's fine if I tag along? I don't mean to be a bother or keep you from your fishing." She looked down at her feet. "I apologize for acting abraisively at first, my people skills are quite rusty from being secluded for so long. Honestly I'd appreciate any of the guidance you're willing to give that I can get. And you never know, I might be a good luck charm for your fishing trip. Maybe you'll catch some really good fish!" She smiled up at him, trying to make the best out of the current situation. The confidence that radiated off of the man actually seemed to calm her anxieties, she wasn't fully sure why. But there was one thing that was for certain, and it's the feeling that living through this death game didn't seem so impossible anymore.

"Name's Wulfrin," Wulfrin said as he shook Ciela's hand. "Pleasure to meet you and your E rated hands. Unfortunately you will find that without the martial arts skill you wont be doing much to any of the mobs even on floor one. I'm not one to judge, but if you don't feel like punching things to death, you should come by my shop on floor twenty-two. I'm a blacksmith so I can keep you kitted on armor. You can use the rewards from completing The First Lesson." As he spoke his hands flew through the menu panels like he had done it a million times before. An invitation was sent to Ciela asking if she wanted to join Wulfrin's party.

"If you accept the invitation I can see your HP and Energy bars, allowing me to ensure you don't die. It's not necessary, but it helps." Wulfrin added as he waited for her to accept. "And don't worry about disturbing my fishing. One, the area is completely free of aggressive mobs, and two, I can't help you complete the quest anyway since I've already completed it. I'll just be there for moral support and general tips on the game."

Wulfrin gestured for Ciela to follow. "Tolbana is the city you want to start the quest in." He pointed to a tall cylindrical tower that connected the first floor to the second floor. "It's the town closest to that big tower. That's the dungeon that leads to floor two."

She shook his hand sheepishly. "It's nice to meet you Wulfrin. I will most definitely take you up on that offer. To be truly fair, I chose heavy armor because I usually play a tank in the MMOs that I have played. I totally wasn't thinking about weapons at the time." She watched as he navigated through the menu and she received a party invite, she accepted it immediately as it popped up. "I guess it's smart that they would make one of the first quest areas with no aggressive mobs in it. Also you've just described yourself as a cheerleader." She chuckled.

She caught up to him and interlocked her arm with his. "Lets go buddy! Onto Tolbana!" As they grew closer to Tolbana, they were approached by a posh looking man with well-kept grey hair and a very well-kept mustache and beard. He approached the two players with purpose. "You there! Stop, please! Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable."  Ciela looked at him and asked, "How can I help?" The man adjusted his monocle and sighed. "My name is Dorian, and I am the mayor of this town. As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-" The man seemed flustered and began to twiddle his mustache. "You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand. You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." He waved his hand and continued to speak. "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?"

Ciela nodded at Dorian, "Of course I can help out. It should be no trouble! Where do we start?" Dorian nodded and stated, "Excellent, I knew I could count on you! You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money." With the quest accepted, Ciela heads off toward Tolbana and stops herself. "Wait, where's Zackariah at?" She looked at her compatriat with a very puzzled look on her face.

"I'm not a cheerleader," Wulfrin protested. "Wait what are y-" Wulfrin was cut off by Ciela interlocking her arm with his and dragging him towards Tolbana. Once he regained his footing and freed himself from the clutches of his female companion, Wulfrin was able to take the lead and guide the duo away from the more aggressive mob spawning areas. With his knowledge and frequent trips through the area the duo had a fairly uneventful trip towards Tolbana.

Just outside the gates, the duo was approached by Dorian White, the mayor of Tolbana. It was odd to see him outside the city walls. Wulfrin mentally added this new interaction point to his ever-growing list of odd places to find the mayor. As usual, the scatterbrained mayor spilled the info about his ongoing and never-ending cycle of loaning out money and forgetting who he lent it to. His female companion accepted his quest, and just as quickly he had arrived, Dorian took off down the road towards the Town of Beginnings.

"Wait, where's Zackariah at?" Ciela said looking to Wulfrin in confusion.

"He owns an alchemy shop in the town," Wulfrin chuckled. He admired the newbie's desire to get the ball rolling, as it reminded himself of his first day out of the safe zone. "I can show you the way. Stay close though, we gotta go through some back alleys and they can be pretty confusing."

"Man I wish this game had quest markers. How are you supposed to find things when there's no clear markers or descriptors." Ciela sighed disappointedly. "Honestly, it makes me feel like I'm playing Dungeons & Dragons but in virtual reality." She took a mental note of him telling her to stay close and she did. She did NOT want to get lost... again. "So... how many players have you escorted on this quest? Are you kind of like the designated tour guide or something?" She giggled as she followed her companion closely through the alleyways. "Please don't take that the wrong way! I'm genuinely curious." She becomes flustered as she realizes she may have sounded a bit rude. As they walked through the back alleys, she looked around and took in the sights. "I'm so glad that towns are safe zones. These back alleys would be the perfect hunting grounds for PKers to target new players, especially if they were wandering aimlessly." She coughed and had a look of innocence and naivete on her face, "I don't know any new players who would do that."

After a while, the duo walked upon what appeared to be an alchemist's shop. Walking in they spotted an older gentleman with white hair and white facial hair, he seemed very distracted. Ciela looked at all the different potions and vials on the wall as they are greeted by the gentleman. “Oh, hello," Ciela glances at the cup of purple liquid that sits on the counter just below him. "Are you here to order something? I’m sorry, but I am currently swamped with orders, and I’m running out of supplies.” Ciela sees the gears turning in the mans eyes and just before she can say anything he starts speaking again. “Would you gather a few materials for me? Flowers, herbs, rare woods, whatever you can find outside the city walls. I promise I’ll help you fill your order as soon as you return. In fact, I would be willing to show you how to do it yourself.”

Ciela nods, "Sure, whatever you need." She looks to her companion, "Please tell me that was Zackariah and not some random fetch quest that I just accepted."

"Yep that's him," Wulfrin said as he leaned against the wall just inside the shop.

"Ah! Wulfrin my boy!" Zackariah exclaimed seeing him again. "How's your search coming for Dorian's missing payment?"

"Uh you know..." Wulfrin said sheepishly. He looked up towards his level in the upper corner of his vision. "It's going. I just got a bit ... distracted. Anyway we'll see you in a bit."

"All right," Zackariah replied. "Good luck out there."

Wulfrin exited the establishment pinching the bridge of his nose. He had completely forgotten that he hadn't finished the quest line. He was not looking forward to Lyle's reaction. He turned to his companion with a bit of an ashamed look on his face. "Come on," Wulfrin said as he rushed out of Tolbana. "Fishing spot isn't too far. Best we get you started asap. This could be a long one."

Wulfrin led the duo towards the northern edge of the floor. There a small river flowed down from a small mountain within which was the cave that served as the start of another quest line. wulfrin pulled out his fishing rod and cast his line into the slow moving river. The bobber moved up and down on the waves. Wulfrin set the rod up next to him so he could feel the rod tug if there was a catch. He lay down on the soft grass and looked towards the underside of floor two.

"Start turning over rocks and gathering random plants," Wulfrin said in a relaxed tone. "Eventually the system will register something as a material and add it to your inventory. You'll need five to turn into Zackariah, so better get to it."

Ciela looked at her companion, "Is someone avoiding one of the first quests? Aren't the first quests like the meat and potatoes of this game?" She followed behind him closely toward his fishing spot. When they finally reached their destination she watched as he set up his fishing pole and laid on the grass. "I know that we're in an area with little monsters, but how are you able to be so relaxed when you're not in a safe zone?" She began sheepishly turning over random rocks, and picking random flowers that she thought were pretty. After a while the flowers she picked shattered into a shower of polygons and Ciela had a very saddened look on her face. She turned over a bigger rock that was closer to Wulfrin and got really excited as an info panel popped up in her face. She read the info panel and said, "I got one!!! Four more to go!" As she looked over at him joyously he was closing his own info panel. "Get anything good?" She walked over to him and stood over him, looking down at him.

"Not avoiding per say," He replied. "I've just been on more pressing adventures. If you need the level boost, I have some contacts that can help you out. Honestly though I've found i got more practice with the systems outside The First Few Lessons quest line." He was oddly calm considering the area wasn't in a safe zone. The cool breeze flowing through the area carried the pleasant scent of a spring time valley.

"The answer your question is numbers," Wulfrin said trying to formulate the correct response. "Every thing in this area has a damage output less than my mitigation. That means I will only take a single point of damage. Also my damage can one shot everything in the area, since I can do well over one hundred damage per hit. Long story short, unless a player comes along to kill me, there is absolutely no danger."

Cheers came from his companion. She stood over him blocking the sun from reaching his form. "Won't know if the items are anything good until I get them appraised, but I did get a chest so at least it's something. Got a dungeon map too, might see if I can round up some people to clear it with me."

"More pressing adventures huh? Like what kind of adventures?" She continued to turn over random rocks and gather different plants. "You sound like you've got lots of connections." As she picked up a random rock, the menu popped up stating she'd found a material. "Man this is so tedious. I hate fetch quests." She grumbled, looking over at her companion. "I can see why you've chosen other quests instead of this." Her eyes lit up as he mentioned finding a dungeon map, "I wish I didn't hide for so long. If I hadn't I'd be a higher level and maybe I could tag along on that. I regret hiding for so long. But with the recent decline in clearing the game I figured what better time than now to pick up a sword." She sat next to her companion for just a moment and enjoyed the scenery. Ciela looked at him, "I hope I'm not being too personal by asking this, but did you hide at the beginning or did you immediately start fighting?" She twirled her hair as she waited for her companion to answer.

"I fought a land shark," He said checking his line. The bobber still lazily bobbed on the water undisturbed. "In fact it was the same quest I was suggesting to take you on. That contact of mine likes to use it as a level boost for newbies. He calls it his "Shark Bait Training Program". Basically he solos the fight party gets to reap the rewards."

His companion rustled around through the weeds behind him. She seemed to be suffering from success, as she was finding the required items much faster than Wulfrin had when he did the quest. He briefly adjusted his laying position. Oddly enough, even though his body was virtual, comfort only lasted for so long. His companion expressed frustration with the type of quest they were on.

"So far this one is the worst of the trio," Wulfrin added finally regaining some semblance of comfort on the river bank. "The next one is a combat based one, so I suggest you locate a weapon. Those hands of yours might be rated E, but they wont do much to even the simple boars."

Ciela sat down beside him, no doubt taking a break form the aimless rummaging she had been doing. though he didn't look like it, Wulfrin was listening intently to Ciela's explanation of why she picked up her non-existent sword and left the Town of Beginnings where the other stayers resided. She twirled her hair, a nervous tick of hers it seemed, as she asked about Wulfrin's own progression.

"I'll be honest," Wulfrin sighed. "I've only been outside of the Town of Beginnings a handful of weeks now. I've been lucky that some  high level players have been taking me on their low level quests that they missed. To answer more directly yes, I cowered in the Town of Beginnings since the start of this mess. My online persona was always more courageous than my real life self, but this game kinda confused me mentally. I had to completely repress everything about my real life just to leave. I'm glad I did though, I've met many great people and had several great adventures."

Wulfrin flicked through his menu and materialized a small honey bun still in the wrapper and began to snack on it. He materialized a second and offered it to Ciela. "Enjoy a taste of the real world," he said. "Got a bunch of these stashed away. They don't provide any statistical buff, but damn do they taste like home."

"Shark bait training program huh? I mean if there's little to no potential danger, I don't see why not." She listened to Wulfrin as he explained the quests to her. Her face reddened, "I'm not gonna live down stating that my hands are rated E for everyone, am I?" As she listened to her companion talk about his own experiences, she continued to twirl her hair. "That must've been hard. The way I currently act is how I act in real life. I've always found it hard to be brave and courageous, usually I'm a hermit." She chuckles and watches as her companion goes through his menus and out comes a honey bun. When he materializes one for her, she looks at him and her eyes light up. She eats it happily. "Oh my god! These are my favorites. I've almost forgotten what they tasted like. Thank you so much!" As she finished her honey bun, she swiped through her menus and sent Wulfrin a friend request. "I hope sending a friend request isn't too forward, but anyone who shares their food with me is definitely considered a friend in my book." She kind of lacklusterly searches through the grass and rocks by the pair, and she doesn't find anything. "Damn. " She takes this as a sign to take a break. She laid on the ground and just looked at the underside of Floor 2 and listened as the river flowed by.

"No," Wulfrin chuckled. "I'll be taking that quote with me to the grave. As for the quest, there is virtually no danger. I would recommend going and doing Breaking the Unbreakable if you get time, the sword art you get from it is an AoE stun, so it's pretty useful."

Wulfrin checked his line once more. He sighed dejectedly as Cardinal seemed to be actively keeping him from finding anything. The RNG was never usually in his favor when it came to fishing, but he was too stubborn to give up. The cool breeze made it so relaxing to just lay down and forget about the rough quest before them of clearing the game.

Wulfrin gazed at the underside of floor two above them. "I've been meaning to go hunting for a small animal companion," Wulfrin said as he continued his pondering gaze. "Once we get you through the early levels, your welcome to come with. Probably wont be much danger, but who knows where the familiar quest will take us. There's also grabbing you some professions. One of them is cooking, so you could make more of those honey buns as well as food that boosts stats."

"I would love to come along! As for what profession I'm wanting to take up, I've kind of heard talk of the different ones and figured I'd stick closer to what I know IRL which is cooking. Especially because then I could make more of those delicious honey buns. Among many other things." She got up from their little relaxation spot and began to search once again for materials, hoping that RNG would be on her side. So far it has been but she didn't want to curse herself by stating it out loud.

She found a pretty flower and grabbed it, the menu popped up stating that she gained another material. Only two more to go. "So you said you fought a land shark? What other dangerous questing have you partaken in since you left the Town of Beginnings?" She looked at Wulfrin, studying his armor and trying to make a guess in her head how many scuffles and scraps he'd been in.

"Haven't been on any dangerous missions," Wulfrin replied. "All the quests I've gone on have had another high level player that handled most of the heavy lifting. With the exception of the easy ones like getting my professions. I did get a letter from Olympus requesting me to go to floor 17. I just haven't taken the time to do it." Wulfrin double checked his fishing line. Nothing seemed to be biting after his first catch. Then an idea started to form in his head.

"I might go chase down a wolf pack," Wulfrin said as he dusted off his coat from laying along the river bank. "If you stay far enough away they shouldn't bother you, but it would be a good sneak peak at what is to come in lesson two."

Without even waiting for a response, Wulfrin collected his rod and started off towards a pack of four wolves that had just finished killing a boar. "Keep some distance between yourself and the battle or stay here," Wulfrin said as he drew his sword. "This will only take a second."

"Okay have fun!!" She watched her companion as he went off on his own. She watched him walk off as she continued to search, although she wasn't getting lucky this go round on materials. She may have been too distracted. She made sure to heed her companions advice to stay far away from the fight that was about to occur as to not draw aggro onto her. But she was also watching as Wulfrin drew his sword. She decided that she was going to sit on the grass with her legs crossed and watch him fight the wolves that would probably be no match for him. At this very moment she was wishing she had popcorn, treating the fight as a show. "You got this! Get em! You can do it." She watched intently and waited for her companion to make the first strike on the pack of wolves he found.

"Chow time puppers," Wulfrin said as he walked right up to the pack. He turned briefly at his companion's words of encouragement. He gave a thumbs up with his left hand then took a stance. Wulfrin's stance appeared to leave him open from an attack from all angles, but he didn't seemed to be phased. The wolves bared their fangs and began to circle him, ready to attack from all sides. Wulfrin simply smiled. The wolves had gone exactly where he needed them to. His blade shined with a deep crimson light, and in a flash he spun slamming the flat of the blade into each wolf that surrounded him. The fourth wolf managed to leap out of the way just before the blade made contact.

Three of the wolves were left staggering from the blow. The second of which seemed to be limping more than the others. The fourth regained its footing and leapt at Wulfrin who sidestepped it and put the four in a neat little cluster, a set up for his next attack.

"If you get the motion right!" Wulfrin shouted to ensure his companion could hear. "The system does much of the heavy lifting! You just have to aim!"
