  1. Vaguely aware of its impending mortality, the boar willed itself to go down fighting. Whipping itself into a frenzy, the beast charged forward without warning and thrashing about in a fit of rage. It came at the player head-on in a mad dash, culminating in a brief clash with the boy's blade before knocking it out of the way with its massive tusks and striking him directly. The player made an admirable attempt to keep it at bay by grabbing onto its tusks and pushing back, but to no avail as the creature pressed forward. The boar noticed as the player yelled out in pain as its tusk ran further and further through him, before he finally managed to escape its efforts. Exhausted, the boy took a few steps back, breathing heavily now. The boar gave a ferocious roar, intending to soon finish the job.

  2. Azide pushed himself off the ground and took a deep breath, holding his trusty rapier out in front of him. Luckily, he'd managed to shield himself from the boar as it overran him, and yet the combination of hits had still costed him nearly a third of his health points (albeit he only had seven, but still). There was no time here for any tricks, he reasoned. He had better chances of surviving than the boar, and with the first mover advantage on his side, he could afford to trade a few blows with the beast. He tightened his grip, then bolted at the creature and leapt in the air before delivering a second clean hit on the beast. Landing closely behind it, he quickly turned to appraise the damage and the boar's health decrease by 1. "It's no critical hit, but I'll take two for two. Practically a new record for me anyway," he thought. "Just one more and I can finally get going." He steadied himself and his weapon, awaiting what he'd hoped to be the creature's dying move.

  3. The boar cried out upon being hit, although its cry was far too artificial to draw any true sympathy. Not that it sounded fake- in fact Sword Art Online's sound clips were rather convincing and well done. It simply lacked the sheer terror and agony that came only from real suffering, and perhaps even the defiant will to survive that often appeared with it. In any case, it turned around, uncompromising in its insistence fighting 'til death. The boar charged forward and angled its tusks low, managing to swipe at the player's legs and tripping him up in the process. Upon seeing the toppled player, it flared its nostrils and pawed madly at the ground before charging forward and trampling over him as he rose to his feet. After doling out its revenge, the boar turned to face the player once again, only to see that he had managed to get back up on his feet. He looked somewhat worse for wear, but was definitely still alive. It readied for the player's retaliation, keeping itself low to the ground.

  4. Azide peered out through the long grass, spying on the lone boar as it plodded lazily back and forth. It didn't seem to ever eat or do much of anything at all really, just paced around until it found a player to attack. "So much wasted potential, Akihiko." Assuming no outside intervention, he'd noticed that each monster seemed fairly predictable in its movements. He'd been watching for the better part of an hour by now, wanting to be absolutely sure there wouldn't be any unexpected deviations here. "Just a little bit further..." he thought as he reached for his rapier's handle. The boar took a few steps further and stood still, where he knew it would stay for an additional three seconds before turning around and following its scripted way-points, just as it had done before. "This had better be quick, I still have to look forward to getting those other components after all." Seizing the moment, he sprang out of the grass and dashed on over to the unsuspecting creature, stabbing it cleanly through with his blade before it could even turn to face him. "Sorry, all I want are tusks. Honest."

  5. The girl cleared her throat. "Umm, I don't want you to take this the wrong way sir, but the rapier is actually meant to be a thrusting weapon." She pointed to the wall behind her, from which an impressive assortment of long swords hung still. She grinned, and something in her eyes reflected a rather quick witted mind for someone her age. "If you want, I'd be more than happy to revise your request into something more conventional, like one of these here long swords I crafted!"

Azide shook his head. "I really appreciate that you're doing this free of charge and all, but I'm dead set on the rapier." He unfolded his arms and scratched his head. "I'm completely aware of how stupid this is, but I spawned in this world with a rapier in hand and I'll die with one in hand." He blinked, and before she could open her mouth again, he clarified himself. "Actually, scratch that. But in any case, I really insist on the original design," he added with a shrug.

She sighed, expressing what looked more like an amused confusion rather than actual annoyance, before returning to her usual cheery demeanor. She nodded, holding a hand against her chin, then crossed her arms and looked back at her prospective client. "Fair enough, I respect that! So as a blacksmith, I have most of basic materials and such here at my shop, but what I'm gonna need from you is a handful of items alright?"

Azide nodded. "That's fine by me, sounds like it might even be fun." He pulled up the SAO interface and tapped his way to a section he could use to record the materials, and although he doubted he'd actually need to refer to it, it didn't take much effort either way.

Sai placed her hands flat against the table and looked straight at him. "Alright! Now the faster you bring me some Greater Steel Ore, one Ruby Red Ruby, and lastly, a Boar's Tusk, the faster I can get to work!"

He finished typing in the required materials, then closed to the menu and turned back to face the young smith. He gave a slight grin and extended his hand, taking the girl's in his own and shaking it firmly. "Better start firing up those ovens now, Sai." He turned and made his way out of the shop, waving behind him as he walked out the door. "I'll be back before you know it!"

The door shut soon after, and once again it was just Sai and her swords. She smiled and headed to the back room, looking forward to the new project.

  6. Seeing the other player match his pace, he looked over and threw out a hearty thumbs-up. "Right on! That's the spirit!" He turned his attention back toward the white expanse before him, and rather than turn down his current pace, dialed it up just enough to slowly start widening the distance between the two. Without turning around, he called out to the player again. "I might be pointing out the obvious here, but we're surrounded by nothing but snow as far as the eye can see. Nothing wrong with a friendly little race, right?" He felt himself shiver, knowing the warmth he felt while running wouldn't sustain him long-term, but cast the thought aside. "Call me an opportunist or whatever, but would you believe you're the only person I've seen around here? It's not exactly a metropolitan area, so after seeing that blue thing around your neck, I figured I'd fare a lot better with someone who actually knows the area." He cleared his throat. "And hopefully, that's where you come in." Suddenly, he heard another call in the distance which sounded distinctly similar to the one they'd heard prior. "Say, you wouldn't happen to recognize the monster producing these calls, would you?"

  7. Azide doubted the other player could actually hear him, considering the wind was likely carrying his voice in precisely the opposite direction. But rather than simply leave as he was inclined to, he made his way down to the streak of blue among all of the white. "Nice to know I haven't gone colorblind," he thought. Upon reaching the base of the hill, he slowly approached the other player, before stopping a short distance in front of him. Azide stepped forward. "So now that you can actually hear me, I just thought I'd clear the air and point out the size of your ridiculously large sword." Feeling a particularly cold wind rush by, he tugged on his own scarf and straightened it accordingly. It wasn't nearly as majestic or blue, but then again he wasn't that vain either. "Anyways, now that we've gotten that out of the way, I don't suppose you might be heading anywhere in particular? Admittedly I'm not too familiar with the area, so I was thinking it'd be convenient if you let me tag along for a while. Just until the storm lets up, or something interesting happens." He paused, hearing the distinct shriek of a monster in the distance, then turned his attention back to the blue-scarfed player. "I don't know about you, but I think I'll go check that out. Feel free to tag along!" And he went speeding off.

  8. Nothing but white, as far as the eye could see. Not a single inch of this place was free from the ubiquitous snow. And yet somewhere along this flawless blanket of white lay a single figure half-sunk and rather worn. "Where am I?" For a moment he thought himself a dead man, seeing nothing but white all around. Dispelling the idea, a single flake lazily drifted into view and fluttered about in the gentle breeze until finally come to rest upon his face. It didn't melt, it it was simply quite cold. But seeing the flake had given him idea of where he now was. In his journey to discover the secrets of this world and the progress they could bring, he'd entered the fourth floor of Aincrad in order to gather information, but had gotten caught up one of the area's notorious blizzards. He reached up with his arm, thankful not to see any signs of gangrene, or any sort lasting damage for that matter. Content, he freed his remaining arm from their snowy encasement and pulled himself out. He slowly rose to his feet and surveyed the area, then frowned. "I can't even see my footprints anymore. How long was I out for?" he wondered. He rolled his shoulders and stretched his frosty limbs before cupping his hands and blowing against them. "This game might not let me actually die from the cold, but it sure as hell doesn't feel that way." He shivered and wrapped his arms around himself, cursing himself for not having considered the possibility of getting lost here.

He made his way toward a snowy hill in the distance, and upon reaching the top, spied a long blue scarf blowing in the wind. More importantly, the scarf was of course, attached to a player. He cupped his hands together hoping it would carry his voice further (Would that actually work in the game? He had no idea.) and yelled, "Hey, you down there! Yes, you with the obnoxiously large sword! Mind if I come down? I'm thinking I might be just a teensy bit lost."

  9. "Whoa, settle down there son," said Azide as he watched Brayden appear in his party list. He shrugged. "Would you believe me if I told you I was level 42 and just preferred the look and feel of cloth clothing?" Thinking he could sense some skepticism emanating from the other player, he raised his hands in front of him and looked away as if he'd been caught in the act. "Fine fine, I'm currently a first level, but I'll have you know I'm at least somewhat capable!" A new number now appeared next to Brayden's name in the party list, along with what Azide assumed was his health bar. "Level six, huh? That should work out just fine," he thought. "Not so high that I'd slow him down, or..." he paused. "if it comes to it, not too high for me to defend myself if he proves to be hostile.". He looked around seeing plenty of roaming boar in the area and took a few steps, then turned to glance back at Brayden. "Well?" he asked. "What are you waiting for Brayden? Let's get to work." Without waiting for the other player's reply he turned and set his sights on one of the stronger boar he'd seen in these parts. "Oh I agree, by the way. Rhonnaldio isn't the best name in the world, so I'll just have to stick with Brayden." He turned his face to show the boy he was only (mostly) teasing, then gestured for them to get a move on. Locking his eyes, he drew his rapier and made a mad dash towards it.

  10. Azide turned around and found himself approached by another player- a younger boy with green eyes and a bright red jacket. Though he approved of the green eyes, he thought the red to be too flashy of a color. "Well the name's Azide, but I think common courtesy would call for you to introduce yourself first," he remarked. He noticed the boy's wide grin, which almost seemed genuine enough to make him smile back. Almost, but not quite. He pointed vaguely at the boy's jacket. "So isn't it a little conspicuous to be wearing something so noticeable in a game where everything wants to kill us?" He chuckled to himself then walked over to the player and gently patted his shoulder. "There there, just playing around kid. But I don't suppose you want to party up? Might make lighten up the boredom a bit, unless you're boring of course." Azide pulled up a menu and tapped around a few times until he found the party feature. Soon enough, a party request appeared in front of the younger player. "No orange name at least. Can't be entirely sure he won't just kill me, but beggars can't be choosers." He remembered reading something about that in the help menu at some point, although it probably wouldn't hurt to ask someone more about all of this. He was learning, but the process was slow work by himself. "So, what do you say? Let's make this work for both of us."

  11. Azide sat atop a rather large boulder, swinging his legs slowly back and forth and grinding the edge of his rapier against the gritty surface methodically. After a few minutes, he held it in front of him and scanned the weapon for any signs of change. Still shiny and perfect as always. Carefully, he pressed the back of his hand gently against the surface, drawing it back after finding the metal to be disappointingly cold. "Well, looks like I can't just sharpen my way to the hundredth floor." He swung the thin blade around from side to side, imagining himself to be wielding an actual slashing weapon instead of the flimsy piece of iron he was holding at the moment. He let his arm (and the flimsy piece of iron it was holding) fall back against the rock and sighed, then sheathed it before jumping off. "Might as well try to deal more damage the normal way," he thought. He walked off in search of creatures to grind his blade against instead. His rapier might not be the best weapon for that sort of thing, but he'd find a way to make it work.

  12. Azide looked at the player before him who'd seemingly appeared from out of nowhere. Judging from how he'd managed to kill the boar in a single swing (which admittedly didn't sound too difficult when he thought about it), he figured the boy to be of a significantly higher level than his own. Still, he looked to be on the younger side, but then again kids these days were exposed to all sorts of games at early ages. "Geeze, saved by a kid. Only in a videogame," he thought to himself. He walked over to the other player, sheathing his rapier as he did. "A whole lot of good this thing did for me...

"Great, never been better," he replied, throwing in an exaggerated arm swing and a not-even-half-hearted grin for good measure. Satisfied with the obligatory sarcasm, he brought his arm back down and a rather bored expression returned for what seemed to be the first time all day. "No but really, I'm pretty sure I'm almost dead man." He looked at the other player up and down. He wasn't quite sure of his level, but from the equipment he could tell that the boy was at least experienced. "So were you watching the whole time or does this game just have a flair for dramatic timing?" He extended his hand. "Name's Azide, by the way."

Out of the corner of his eye, he spied something the boar must have dropped upon its defeat. Keeping his arm extended, he gestured toward it with his other. "I'm doing a quest to become an alchemist, by the way. Think that might be something I need?"

(Thanks for the heads up by the way)

  13. Azide's body exploded in pain as he took the full force of the hit, sending him sliding back across the dirt. Teeth clenched tightly, he managed to look up at his all-important health bar. "Damn it!" He looked at his health bar again, hoping he'd simply misread it. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to be the case. He slammed his fist against the ground and pushed himself off the ground slowly as the pain started to fade. "That's it? One health point left?" He dusted himself off and steadied himself, aware that he still had time to make his move. He locked eyes with the creature and forced himself not to look away. "I guess it can't be helped. But on the bright side, at least this keeps it interesting. " He held his sword in front of him and pointed it straight at the wild boar's head, then brought back his elbow just far enough to give him room for one final thrust. He ran at the boar full speed, but just before began his stabbing motion, it had managed to react far faster than he expected and ducked under the intended death-blow. "That's it," he thought to himself. "That's all I've got." Unable to change his trajectory quickly enough, the blade of his rapier missed its target completely, making him stumble clumsily past it. He turned around to face it, eyeing it again. He found no pride in the creature's eyes. It was only, after all, a program. He shrugged. "You win some you lose some." He gripped the handle of his sword a little tighter as he kept his eyes on the boar. "Is this it?"

  14. Notice the player's considerably shorter distance from him this time around, the boar decided to take advantage of the fact and sprinted forward until it was almost upon him.

Azide, stood his ground as the boar quickly came closer and closer. He hoped to dodge the assault at the last moment in order to land a clean hit on the beast in close quarters. He knew he himself was no sloth, he wasn't going to kid himself into believing he could outrun it either, and so he reasoned the lessened distance took away the creature's acceleration. Plus, its four legs and bulkier frame would make him a much easier target to hit at this distance, and its mobility would be limited if he made sure to keep close. He waited and waited until just the right moment, until the boar was nearly almost upon him, then rolled to the left. Wrong move.

The boar, although certainly not intelligent, had been pre-programmed with a countermeasure for this sort of tactic after the beta testers had declared the enemy type to be too simple. However, in order to keep the game's appeal to less experienced players, only a small percentage of the boar would actually have this countermeasure active. The effect was the same- forcing players to be cautious on the off chance that the creature would punish them for any reckless move. But this was, of course, unknown to the gaming newcomer Azide.

The boar feigned a pounce, causing Azide to roll out of the way just as expected. Seeing the player caught off guard and in no position to defend himself, the boar quickly shifted itself and charged forward once again. It crashed into the player dead-on, sending him sliding across the ground and knocking the breath out of him.

  15. Azide quickly collected himself and eyed the health bar floating at the corner of his vision. He took a deep breath when he saw the previous attacked hadn't been quite as bad as he'd been expecting. "Four out of five health." He took a very brief moment to weigh some the pros and cons of continuing. "Well, eighty percent's probably enough. What's the worst that could happen?" Despite that, he cursed himself silently for not being able to react quickly enough, but at the very least he was still alive.

He darted forward and leapt at the boar, hoping to finish it with an overhead swing of his rapier. He managed to bring the light blade crashing down against the boar's head, only to have it bounce off disappointingly with little effect. Disbelievingly, he quickly glanced at his rapier only to remember it was meant to be used almost exclusively as a thrusting weapon upon seeing its slender profile and dull edges. "'Be sure to pick the rapier', he said. 'It's more badass than a longsword', he said!" He shook his head. "Next time I'll be sure to just stick with the classics." He jumped back a few times, but left a much smaller distance between the two this time, leaving it up to his reactions but disallowing any surprise movements.

  16. Clearly unamused and just perhaps a tad angry, the boar eyed the boy and pawed at the ground thrice before speeding forward, its long tusks ready to tear the player apart just as they had been programmed to do. But instead of heading straight for him, it zipped at an angle to within a few meters of its target, before changing its trajectory and zagged to hit the player's opposite (and unprotected) flank and sending him to the ground while clutching his side. If it had been real life, the boy would have probably died from blood loss within half an hour, and the boar's white tusks would be red with blood. But the boy would not, and the boar's tusks were not. That said, the boar had landed its hit successfully and managed to catch its prey by surprise, but stumbled upon its landing. By the time it managed to turn itself around, the boy had managed to both steady himself as well as close the distance between the two. It flared its nostrils in defiance, as if daring the player to kill him if he could manage it.

  17. Azide ambled along the winding road, nearly stumbling over a stray log that lay sprawled out in the middle of the dirt path. "Damn it," he thought as caught himself at the last moment. He turned around and kicked the defiant trunk of annoyance, only to be met by an unexpected amount of resistance and a sizable amount of pain. A purple tag labeled immortal object appeared over it for a few moments before simply disappearing, and the log? Not even a budge. Azide, on the other hand, let fly a few expletives and gingerly grabbed his foot while hopping up and down on the other, as if it the action would hasten the sensation's departure. "Son of a... geeze, I really have to get used to these preprogrammed physics," he muttered to himself. Fortunately enough, pain seemed to fade far quicker in this game, being more of a momentary feeling than a lasting ache or burn. Sure enough it, it quickly began to lessen in intensity, and after a few lingering moments more, vanished completely.

It was eery in a way, how the world seemed to mirror that other one so completely, and yet its underlying mechanics always snapped him away from the illusion. On the other hand, it seemed important to remember that one seemingly could not be incapacitated simply through temporary injury in this game, outside of any built in mechanics. He made a mental note reminding himself not to turn his back on any enemies that weren't quite dead, then planted both feet back onto the ground and looked back at the virtual menu in front of him. Incidentally, the same one that had distracted him just now, but its message made that forgivable. The title read " ", and it seemed to point toward some sort of specialization feature in the game, or "profession", as he had heard. That was interesting enough in and of itself, but one particular profession in the list caught his attention. "Alchemy, huh? Well it's not quite chemistry, but if anybody's gonna turn lead into gold I might as well be the one to do it. " He navigated through a few more dialog boxes and hit accept, uncharacteristically neglecting to read the alchemist's considerably less exciting career in potion-making. But to be fair, that particular oversight was probably more out of inexperience with the menus and a sense of excitement than a lack of patience. But then again, in this case it might have very well been both.

The screen disappeared and he stared blankly out ahead, then peered to left and then then the right. Nothing. "Well I have to admit, I'm somewhat confused right now. Maybe I messed up somewhere along the way?" He'd pulled up the interface again and had just gotten back to the quest screen, but upon hearing a sudden rustling sound coming from behind him, turned around. He quickly drew his slender rapier and found himself faced with a wild boar as it shot of of the bushes.

The boar stomped its feet and raked the ground the its front paw, making a big show out of its intent to charge at him. Hoping to avoid this, Azide quickly bolted forward and lunged at the creature, thrusting his slender blade roughly where he thought its heart to be. Silently he thanked his dad for making him join the track team. Sure, it felt good to have on a college resume, but it felt damn good in a more practical demonstration. He figured his technique with the rapier was lacking somewhat severely, but his attack seemed to have been on target. He turned around and saw the boar crumple to the ground and thrash about violently before getting getting back on its feet. Expecting the boar's quick recovery, he quickly steadied himself, weapon in hand, and braced himself as the boar charged forward.

  18. I'm still not *quite* as familiar with my character as I'd like to be so far, but I think this song by Ayur suits the more contemplative side of him:

Everyone has their more sociable side, which would call for a different kind of song, but this is what I would associate with his thoughts.

And I really liked all of those songs you guys posted! The music video for Sleep Alone is something, haha. But I especially liked Not a Saint- great song choice.

    » About:
    Hey, Nouel here!
Or more specifically: Napoleon Nouel Navarre. So basically official record holder for the world's Frenchiest name, nineteen years in the running (and no end in sight). Okay, so technically I'm Napoleon, but not to you or your little friend over there. Nope, not even to grannie (bless her heart) all the way over in Ars-en-Ré (sorry gran)! So just stick with Nouel or Azide and I'm sure we'll get along just swimmingly.

So, what to say? Before all of this, I'd been strolling merrily through uni, two or three semesters away from getting my chem degree until some jerk decided to trap me here in SAO. Thing is, I'm not even a gamer and totally avoided gaming like the plague because I'd been told a good game will suck you in and take over your life, and after trying out my pal's nerve gear I can say that's pretty much the case. So yeah, that sucks, but on the other hand I now get acceptable amounts of sleep (meaning not like three or four hours), so there's that at least!

Personality-wise? Well I'd like to think the Canadian blood mellows out most of the snobbiness from my other half, so you probably won't see me looking down on any ignorant Americans or the like, and as long as you're not a special breed of stupid I promise I'll try my best not to be rude! I might be a little sarcastic, maybe even a lot of sarcastic, but you'll live.*

    » Virtues:
    Analytical:
As an inspiring chemist, it's pretty much critical to be able to stand back and dissect a problem before getting to play around. This more cautious road makes me tend to take note of the more discreet details and what they might infer, not only in the environment but also in situations and people.

    Pragmatic:
I'm willing to do what has to be done to get the best results, simple as that. If a train's about to hit a family of four but can be redirected to instead hit their dog or cat, by all means let me flip the switch if it'd let you sleep at night. I won't pretend I always go with the most pleasant option, but I can at least guarantee I probably won't lose sleep over it.

    Adaptive:
People rarely change, but circumstances are always changing. I've always accepted this fully, and so I didn't break down after finding out I'd be spending a little more time in Aincrad than planned. Though I don't always necessarily agree with all directions of change, I'm not too stubborn to change my plan of action accordingly when the need arises. Toss me in a room filled with lions, tigers, rapid squirrels, a few paperclips and some chewing gum and I'll take care of it. Without even using the gum.

    » Flaws:
    Perpetually bored:
People get bored, it's a pretty normal thing, so when I say I get bored very easily, I mean I get bored very easily. I have a hard time doing the same thing for long periods of time unless it interests me, the problem of course being that most things are not inherently interesting to me. Stuff like watching television or cinema, or ironically playing video games? Boring! Going to the mall or the club? Yawn. Heading back to campus to finish some lab work? Better have an extra lab coat!
As someone driven by a desire to observe, dissect and create, boredom for me is a norm dispelled only by moments of constructiveness. Not strictly in a scientific sense, but also in a social one. If you're not a complete idiot, that is.

    Dismissive/Skeptical:
So I'll just come out and say this now, but I'm a pretty smart guy. I know it, you know it, my mom knows it. Hell, even your mom knows it, no offense. I try to keep an open mind just like any other future Nobel laureate, but I refuse to follow somebody else's orders or suggestions unless I'm sure they'll work. And by that, I mean I'm not likely to follow orders or suggestions, or even agree with them for that matter. It's petty, I know. Hey, I'm willing to work with pretty anybody whose brain voltage is at least on the right side of the number line, I I happen to think the finer work should be left to the people best equipped to deal with it (i.e., me.)

    Passive-Aggressive:
If I resent your existence, it probably won't immediately be clear, but if you ask me for a ride everyday to class (which is totally boring) you just might start to consider it around the time I start taking my time in getting to you. But if you ask me if I have a problem with it, of course my answer will be, "I'm fine!" Really, I'm totally fine man. Whoops, silly me, accidentally slammed on the breaks again! So yeah, I'm not perfect. But hey, at least I'm not punching babies in the face, right?

    Story Thus Far
» Shortly after starting up the nerve gear and creating my character, some Japanese guy named Akihiko made a big announcement and lots of tears and anger were to be had. Realizing I was completely out of my depth and new nothing about absolutely the game (or gaming in general) I quickly set off from the chaos hoping to find players more knowledgeable than myself, equipped with only a starter pack and the clothes on my back. I might be French, but I'm not ready to wave the white flag just yet. Pardon my French, but to hell with that.
