  1. He was headed for the mountains now.

Pinball had heard tell of some sort of underground network of caves and passages that spread throughout the entirety of the floor now, and he was of the inclination to find out for himself if that was true or just baseless rumor. Up ahead, the trees began to thin, and the rocky cliffs began to reach higher, and higher, and higher, becoming more imposing and humbling Pinball with every step he took. There was a rocky path up its base, and so that's where he made his path, through the woods further, until he eventually broke the tree line and he began carefully ambling his way up the mountainside.

Although he wasn't quite sure how dangerous that the trek could be on such a "safe haven" floor as this one, Pinball held due caution regardless. The last thing he wanted or needed was for his weight to fall on loose rock and have a deadly tumble down jagged crevices. You couldn't break your neck in the same sense that you could outside of the game, but falling from such a height would be a death sentence all the same.

  2. "A dying breed..."

Most of the time, Pinball felt as though he weren't even alive in the first place.

For what seemed like an eternity now, Pinball's life felt like a cycle of endless wandering, evasion, and guilty nights devoid of rest. When did he stop? Could he ever? Suicide had been on his mind a lot. But stubbornly he persisted. Not because he viewed life as something special anymore, or because he had a reason to keep going, but because he felt as though death was the easy way out of it all, and he didn't deserve to sleep so easily.

"Ah, but you're not being honest with yourself, asshole," he coldly laughed, balancing his way across gnarled tree roots. His voice was tired and full of bitter emotion.

There was another thing. Among the names on the Monument of Life he frequently looked at, there was one in particular that stood out more than any of the countless others. One that mattered more to him than his own life did. Someone that was on his mind more often than they weren't, and who he desperately wanted to make amends with, and soon, because the things he'd said to them and done were horrible, but for the life of him, no matter how much or how hard he rehearsed for the day, the words just wouldn't come to him.

  3. As he walked, Pinball unequipped his jacket.

The coat dissipated in a cloud of misty blue crystals, fading away entirely as the wind carried it elsewhere. A second later, and he'd equipped his Cloak of the Harbingers.

"Talk about a relic." The old uniform of a guild long since past into nothingness, Pinball couldn't help but give a nostalgic glance down at the insignia it bore on its front, the runic symbols of the Harbingers' guild inciting memories in him of what felt like years and years passed. "Atzo."

That was his name: Atzo. Pinball wondered often what had happened to the red-haired man. He'd been the first to approach him when Pinball had crawled his way out of the dirt that was the Town of Beginnings, and had been the only reason that he'd been able to join up with the Guardians of the New Dawn so shortly after. It was where he'd met Stryder, Eatos, Paglikha. Two of which people were dead, the last of which who might as well be in his eyes. But neither Stryder nor Atzo had been seen in a long time.

They weren't dead, though. He wondered briefly what happened to them both and what they were up to now, before dismissively shaking his head and chuckling grimly to himself.

    "You're a dying breed, aren't you?"

  4. After a bit more walking, the spyglass at his waist audibly chipped.

"Here, then." Pinball came to a stop in a clearing within a wood, and took a deep breath.

With a blink, his eyes began to glow a bright yellow, and his vision shout out like a pulse on a radar. He saw the world differently then; the landscape turned to nothing more than 3D meshes, polygonal outlines, and the birds in the trees and the squirrels in the bushes seemed so painfully obvious to him when previously they hadn't been.

But there was no dungeon hidden amongst the trees or beneath the earth that he could see. A brow twitched, but he shrugged it off as the glows dulled and faded from his vision. It was useful, and he didn't regret taking the skill -- but he should have been smarter about it before so eagerly jumping into his search. His skills increased the odds, yes, but there were still ways yet to improve the chance of success. With a resigned sigh, he swiped open his inventory and went on his way.

  5. It was beautiful.

And when that thought hit him it evoked a physical reaction. Since when had he found anything beautiful in this horrible death game they were trapped in? Pinball shook it off and left the sentinel behind him, a dark and gloomy speck juxtaposed across bright verdant fields. Hands in his jacket pockets. Sword on his waist, compass and Zomekko's jar dangling opposite to it, and a blank dungeon map tucked into his belt at his back like a scroll.

Wind blew across his hair and the grass below him, and looking off into the distance Pinball saw a small group of players making their way into the Forest of Memories, from where he'd recently emerged. Without even thinking, he ducked his head and hurried his pace, before stopping himself. Turning to face them again. Watching them go, disappear behind dense foliage and wooded vales.

There was no cause for concern.

  6. Warm and sunny. Friendly and welcoming.

The first thing to hit him was the soft sensation of bright sun on his skin. And while he was quick to the shadows, leaping of the pedestal and ducking behind and between crates and houses and anything else big enough to serve as a shield as he crept to the safe zone's edge, the quiet whistle of wind through the trees and the soft rushing of water somewhere nearby only attributed to the vast tranquility the floor held in store for him.

    But things were different now.

It was almost as if the floor had... expanded? Pinball took to wandering for the course of the next few hours, seeing what he could dig up in terms of pretty sights, and he found no shortage of them. A mill and farmer's market, a friendly old blacksmith within the shady depths of a forest, the large, ominous presence of a kind yet dilapidated guardian in the Reclaimed Sentinel.

  7. A new system meant that there were new opportunities.

One such opportunity he was more than eager to capitalize on was the addition of the General Market. Its addition meant that he didn't have to struggle through the awkward exchange that was usually had over the counters of some random Player's shop. Players talked. NPCs at their stalls were programmed to be reticent but cordial, and few would deviate from that programming outside of the extreme circumstances that demanded it.

Extreme circumstances he would never push upon an NPC, because doing so would compromise the shop's ease and efficiency.

After grabbing a couple of things to hopefully slightly increase his chances of survival, Pinball made his way to the 22nd Floor.

He wanted a quiet, safe environment to check out his new skills, and he could think of no safer than Floor 22. Consuming those items that needed to be consumed and hooking one of the spyglasses to his belt, Pinball would quickly rush past guards and mingling NPCs alike to access the teleporter.

  8. Using Mega Slime Farm: +10% EXP

The conversion had, at first, been a jarring experience.

It was as if his whole world had been pulled out from under him only to be returned one that felt completely different. And in truth, that was quite literally what had happened. This game was their reality, dark and twisted implications and all.

But after a morning of careful deliberation, he'd finally made up his mind as to how he was going to redistribute his stats.

He dropped Sneak Attack, and so many other Hiding mods with it. He was tired of fighting like a killer. Honestly, he was tired of fighting at all. But he had to. So he took what SP he could out of those mods and put it towards things that would help him survive above all else. Zomekko no longer damaged to the touch; instead, he was to hold an opponent down. His spear had turned into a sword, he'd become more ferocious with it, and could turn an enemy's attack back on them with a little bit of preparation. He still didn't wear armor, but he had his own forms of mitigation, mostly in the forms of damage reduction and stuns.

Pinball wanted to put it to the test.

"New rules," he sighed, "same murderer."

  9. A new system meant that there were new opportunities. One such market to be capitalized on was the addition of a General Merchant, meaning that if he wanted to go into town to purchase something, he wouldn't have to bear with the awkward formalities and reassurances a meeting with a Player would typically imply. He was both grateful for it as he was dreading getting a hold of the new systems his life would from now on abide by. The first thing he would do would be to test such things in a dungeon ranked one below his tier, but first he would need some supplies.

  10. "I liked your company."

    "I... liked yours."

    And she was gone.

Like snow melting in the summer. Fireworks in the night sky. A shooting star. You blinked and you'd miss it.

Fleeting. Sand was falling between his fingers. The sensation of warmth leaving him and the cold creeping back up his arms as he watched as she went, as she turned the corner, as he thought about what words to say but couldn't bring himself to until she was gone and well out of sight and he was standing by himself at the end of an alleyway clutching a present he knew in his heart he didn't deserve but so desperately wanted to cling to.

He stood there for longer than he cared to admit. But after he'd mustered what little strength he had left, Pinball stood up, pocketing the present to look at later, and dabbed the corners of his eyes. "I liked it a lot," he said to himself, a long sigh shaking his thin and gangly form. The ill thought out disguise left him cold, especially now with nothing there to keep his mind off of it.

"A lot more than I should have. Agh." He swallowed. "You make me so weak."

But was it weird to enjoy that sense of vulnerability? To long for it? He'd been acting so weird in front of her -- and why? Pinball grimaced. He knew exactly why, but he didn't even want to begin to think about it. Not now. Not yet. But soon?

"I've gotta get out of here first." The gloomy young man lingered for just a moment longer before he too exited the alley, a different way than Mishiro herself had. He took to the rooftops, a shady blur leaping from edge to edge, racing towards the city's borders. Faster and faster he went, until the cold numbed his face and he couldn't think about anything else. Not about Mishiro, or her smile, or the words they'd shared and the countless things he wanted to tell her and apologize for and share with her. His grip, however, remained firmly affixed over the small parcel nestled within his pocket.

Gently above the quiet city and the lives of those within it, the last snow of the Holidays fell.

  12. It was a deadend in more ways than one.

His reflection in the glass. Her face looking back at him. There was a silence so deafening he couldn't think straight. A cacophony of nothingness. Here, now, there was no running, and there was no hiding. There were no delusional excuses, thinly veiled emotions kept carefully under wraps, and even if he wanted to, he wouldn't have been able to look away. It all came crashing down at once, a crescendo of emotion, furious waves crashing down and boring holes through the icy walls he'd built out of fear. Out of guilt. Out of desperation and madness.

Why wasn't she angry? Why wasn't she calling out for the guards? Why wasn't she disturbed that he'd approached her in disguise? Why, why, why?

Why? It was the only word - the only question - that came to mind.

Why was he lying to himself? Why couldn't he face himself? Why wasn't he running? Why had he ever ran to begin with?

Her fingers closed around his and they pulled him away from a state of mind that was more than disturbing. It was nice, and it was warm, and it was undeserved. Was she telling the truth? She would never lie to him, right? He didn't care. He'd told her he hadn't cared. He didn't. He didn't want to. He wanted to be alone. He wanted to die alone, unforgiven, alone, and he wanted everyone left behind that he'd gone out like the coward he was. There was no redemption for scum.

But ever since then. Since her.

And as she pulled away from him, his hand remembered her touch. In his palm, he clutched a neatly wrapped parcel. Her smile...

That was when he began to tremble. It was uncontrollable. He willed himself to stop shaking, to hold back what felt like a tidal wave of pressure building up in his throat and skull, his face turning red around the eyes. "Oh," was the only sound he could manage, and it was choked. If he hadn't-? Would he--?

    "Thank you."

Pinball pocketed the item but kept his grip there, refusing to let go of that precious thing. He forced a smile and tried to look her in the eyes but he knew if he did, even for a second, he wouldn't be able to help what happened afterwards. And he was still shaking. He'd never stopped. With his freehand he adjusted himself, but his lips quivered in a way that was more than recognizable to anyone. It was deceptively easy to shatter ice. There were always weak spots, and for him, Mishiro was one of them. She could very well have been the only one, too, but when it happened, he'd broken down completely. He wanted to reach out for her, but he didn't want to risk scaring her off. He wanted to tell her he was sorry, that he would never do it again, that he hadn't meant the things he said. He wanted to go back to the way things used to be. He wanted to feel comfortable. He wanted to be happy. He wanted to make her happy. He wanted to make things right.

He wanted to make things right?

That thought alone made it feel as though his head had been cleaved in two.

"I don't know what to say?" His voice came out much more unsteady then he'd wanted it to, and much more than it had been previously. Nevertheless, he continued, repeating the only thing that came to mind that felt sincere, from the very bottom of his very being. She deserved no less.

    "Thank you."

  13. Shadow's taunts fell on deaf ears for the simple fact that Pinball found the AI talkative and obnoxious.

Everyone seemed so focused on shelling out their life stories to this thing that it almost felt the cavernous void was full with the clashing of words rather than steel. Aggravating. Where he'd used to avoid the frontlines for fear of their "just retribution," now it was more because there was hardly a soul on the vanguard he could actually stand. People were egotistical. Stupid. Creatures of boring habit. It made him want to scream.

If these people were Aincrad's best, Aincrad's best were a joke, and he wanted out. But he still had something to fight for, so he couldn't leave.

His own hiding would have long since faded by now, so, with a practiced twirl of his weapon, Jack's Hellfire gave way to Cold Fervor. There would be no special tricks, no secret skills or traps that would come into play -- Pinball fell back on his old practice, his old style, and his old studied way of thinking. If there was an insurmountable creature to be fought, its strength oh so fearsome and absolute, Pinball would simply hit it until it died.

A flash of light and flecks of snow would follow a flashy, blue and white assault. He could tell by the way his strikes registered on the animated minotaur that it was considerably sturdier than him (not that that was saying much), and that it was definitely built to handle a full raid team digging into it. It was strange, though. It must have a second phase. They'd barely started, and they'd already gotten it so low?

    i mean approved i guess

  19. Was she really just going to leave him? As easily as that?

    Frustrating.

But Pinball didn't really have the time or energy to seethe over Arabelle any more than he already had. With a forceful push in the direction of the hellhound, Pinball thrust himself forward, his spear lashing out in what would almost look like multiple directions at once. His spear tore and ripped through the digital flesh of the creature, and with one last ear-splitting howl, Pinball was forced back as Cerberus, Inferno's Rage, fell.

Sweat dripped down his forehead, and he took hot, labored breaths as the polygonal fractals spiraled outwards in every direction.

    It was finally over.

It definitely hadn't been an easy fight. To be honest, he probably wouldn't have been able to done it if Arabelle hadn't been there to assist him - but it wasn't like he was going to acknowledge that. Like, ever. Pinball shook it off. Every exchange with her was just so pleasant. But he could be alone now. He made his way down the tunnel ahead, following Arabelle's example, trusting that she wouldn't have lead him astray, but leaving himself prepared for an unpleasant surprise nonetheless. Whatever happened, he was just grateful he didn't have to deal with her for a good long while.

So why didn't he feel satisfied?

  20. He tilted his head to the sky, and he knew that no amount of hopeful wishing could ever stop time... much less reverse it.

Because the sun was setting, and soon the day would be over.

    "Yeah. It is, isn't it?"

Her words grounded him. Brought him back to reality. Suddenly and abruptly he was again aware of his past floating above his head for the world to see, and he flinched inwardly, his eyes glancing around the courtyard with a ravenous hunger. Luckily for him, though, security was much easier to slip past on the lower floors; and it was honestly nothing short of a miracle. There was no way he would have had enough time to be with her properly otherwise.

Mishiro went on to say some things that Pinball wanted to disagree with but couldn't. Yes, it was obvious, and yes it did tend to attract disdain - but wasn't that how it should be? Somehow, hearing the opposite from her made him doubt everything he'd tried to stand for, and so he was silent, at least for the moment. Softly, he barely managed to reply as she led him down the road. "Alright. Um... thank you."

It was as though he were entranced. Pinball walked behind her, but he couldn't stop his heart from fluttering in his chest every time she moved her head even the slightest bit. He'd follow her gaze and look above the rooftops, through the pale and gray clouds, and see the color hidden underneath. Hadn't there been a time where he'd loved watching the sunset over Aincrad?

Hadn't he watched them with someone? But Mishiro's level cadence once again pierced through his murky thoughts. "Y-yeah, I'm still here. Sorry."

And his blood ran cold. Mishiro turned the corner, but Pinball felt himself slow down. It was certainly a rude awakening, to have such a warm feeling turning to ice, and so quickly. He probably wouldn't have been able to name the look on his face had a mirror been put in front of it. His fingers felt tense as he clenched and released. Why was he shaking?

There was no way she knew. Right?

"That is strange," he murmured. He cleared his throat, but the trembling could still be felt under his voice, and there was nothing he could do to get rid of it.

"I... haven't been myself recently. It's why I've been acting so weird lately-? And I'm sorry for that. I--"

-- But try as he might, he just couldn't find the words.

  21. And so the fight begun.

Like every other fight he'd participated in, Pinball watched as the front two parties - the vanguard - of the frontlines attacked first. The idea that this raid was much more organized than those that had led to this one once again solidified in Pinball's mind watching the fighters, newcomers and veterans alike, take practiced strike after strike at the boss. Pinball wasn't really sure what the lore was behind the fight, but it looked as though there was some sort of possession going on due to the abnormal way the minotaur jerked around.

Macradon would lead his party forward with a rallying speech, raising his sword and encouraging its members of the importance and honor to be had participating in the boss fight. There was a lot of self-centered talk in it, too, but Pinball was really only listening with one ear.

It sounded like a lot of roleplay bullshit to him.

    What a loser.

Pinball would call Zomekko to his side, and he'd be surrounded by that shadow, even deeper than the darkness that surrounded them already. In a puff of smoke, he was gone, but still he watched, waiting for his opportunity.

  22. He hadn't expected or intended to take part in any activity on the frontlines since the last fight. That ridiculous room effect had effectively forced him out of it, for starters, and he'd had the distinct feeling that there were those among the top players that would breathe a bit easier without his eyes on their backs.

But things were different now. Maybe not personally, but as a whole, he'd noticed that the people who ran things up there were a whole lot more forgiving of killers, with how many they seemed keen on adding to their ranks. And while that thought alone was enough to make Pinball's nose wrinkle in disgust, it meant that they would probably let him join the fight if he could dish out a fair amount of damage.

And luckily for him, he probably dealt just the bare minimum to be considered.

There were feasts set out for them and people already gathered, and Pinball made his way among them without sparing a glance at any others. He'd been at the meeting -- they knew to expect him here. Whether or not they wanted him was a different story entirely. Somehow, amongst the mass murderers and edgy, two-dimensional "psychopaths," Pinball's murders were still considered to be some of the most abhorrent. As they should be. His problem with the front was their willingness to write off these crimes - to allow people to come back easily from snuffing out a person's life. The only reason they hated him more than those present who had killed more than him was because the people he had killed had been known by them; on the flip, it was easy to forgive and forget when you aren't able to attach a face to a name. To Pinball, a life was a life. It seemed these days people were keen to forget that.

While the root of his frustration had shown little to no development, the level of preparedness the players brought to the fight had seemed to increase exponentially. There were feasts and consumables being handed out and traded for those who needed - due no doubt in part to the new blood among the fighters. Were these powerful rookies showing up the old timers? Or were their presence encouraging the latter to pick up the slack? They were amusing thoughts. He looked forward to seeing this through.

    This, and everything after.
