  1. Oh joy, so it was a maze. Or at least a mind-game. Vally hated those. Mazes more than mind-games, since the latter you just needed to be smart with, whereas there was really no reasoning to the former. At least she couldn't starve to death, but she felt like it'd probably take her a while to escape, what with her current run of luck. Maybe it'd turn around by the time she got to floor three, though. She sincerely hoped so, at least. Luck like she was having now would actually end up getting her killed, quite possibly. "Brilliant. So it won't be the mobs that'll kill me, it'll be myself. That's just wonderful. I can't wait to trigger that quest", she stated dryly, before shaking her head.

"Hmph. Well, I'll get these last two drops eventually even if it takes all day, so I'm not gonna end up letting that beat me either. I just hope this kind of luck doesn't end up following me through the entire game. Or maybe these drops are actually just really rare for a tutorial quest. I've killed almost twice as many boars as I should have needed to at this point", the spear-woman grumbled, before taking a seat with her weapon impaled in the ground.

  2. "Ugh, mandatory solo quests? That's a thing? That sounds like a pain but whatever, I'm sure I'll be able to handle that as long as it doesn't involve too much farming or something", Vally replied, apparently not too pleased with the idea of being forced to go solo sometimes. She just hoped they wouldn't be too difficult. "I see, I'll keep that in mind. Is it particularly dangerous, or what? Reckon I could handle it with a couple more levels?", she questioned, trying to change the subject. The thought worried her, really. She liked to be prepared. Getting randomly dropped somewhere wasn't the kind of thing she wanted to deal with.

The next boar pup very nearly managed to dodge Vally's spear sweep. Maybe she was getting tired of the farming, and getting sloppy by extension. It wasn't as if something actually dangerous could show up anyway. "This RNG is going to be the death of me, I swear to God...Time for a rest to get my energy back, I think. I'm completely out."

  3. Vally rolled her shoulders and neck as she scanned the area for another pup to rend from the first floor. As she did so, she looked towards Mars with a nod of agreement. "Yeah, that's why I said I don't want to go completely solo. I'd lose my mind if I did that. Having someone to talk to helps just...coast through it, I guess. Focus more on the talking and less on the actual grinding itself", she said, gently carving the tip of her spear across the ground. "RNG can be a real pain sometimes. I just hope I have better luck than this when it comes to actual gear drops...", she complained, before stalking off to the next boar.

The fourth boar fell just as easily to Vally's spear, and she gave a small growl of annoyance. "I swear to God I'm going to spend all my Col on loot roll buffs just so I don't end up dying from over-grinding instead of an actual tangible enemy", the spear-woman muttered darkly, with a sour look on her face. "It wouldn't be so bad if these things could drop other stuff, but I'm pretty sure their stats are so low that even a 1st-level couldn't get drops from them..."

  4. Vally tapped her chin in thought. It was true, she needed an aesthetic, although she felt the badass but still attractive appearance she had right now was pretty fitting. She liked it. Simple, but it stood out. "Honestly, I think I'm fine sticking with how I look now. Just need to get a vanity item that matches and then make up for it with trinkets", she replied with a tone that had a bit more emotion to it. "And yeah, I plan to once enemies start dealing significant amounts of damage to me. But for now,  like I said, most enemies can't hurt me no matter what, even if they crit, so I'm fine. I should be killing them all quickly, but that won't always work, so...y'know."

With that said, Vally moved into her routine once again. She broke off from Mars to take down the boar pup in one hit, but she was starting to run low on energy now. "Ugh, still nothing, and I'm gonna have to take a rest soon to get energy back. I feel like this is going to take an annoying amount of time to get all these drops..."

  5. "I'll figure something out with my gear. Maybe with my armour I'll be able to keep it looking similar by just making it that way. If I'm gonna be the best DPS, I need to have some consistent part of my appearance, whether it's looking as fine as I do now, or my weapons always being the same colour, or something", Vally explained to Mars. Apparently he didn't appreciate the value in looking incredible, but she did, if that wasn't obvious just from looking at her.

"I'll keep that in mind then. Though I think it might be an idea to upgrade my armour skill a little bit, just so enemies that aren't bosses can't hurt me, y'know?", she stated, before her eyes fixed on another boar pup. She repeated the same action as before, taking it down in a single blow, before she spun her spear around and rested it on her shoulder. "No dice this time. Hopefully my luck doesn't end up running out here, but this is more fun than just wandering around picking flowers, I guess."

  6. Vally snapped her fingers with her free hand at the mention of Mars updating his look. "Fashion is the true end-game, no matter what game you're playing. And yeah, mine will need some switching up too later on. I'll probably swap my Mitigation for Evasion once I get to the point where enemies are actually doing more than a fraction of my health in damage to me. But for the first few floors, that shouldn't be an issue, between what I have now and the Mitigation I'll get from my armour skill."

When they finally exited and came to the area that they needed to be, the spear-woman spent a few moments scanning the area. "Speaking of skills, what's a good order to get them in? Focusing on Grandmastering them one by one, or bring them up equally?", she questioned, before stopping. "Hold that thought."

Vally had spotted one of the boar pups she needed to kill for the quest, a yellow border around its marker. She flourished her red spear into both hands, and after a few seconds of sizing up the distance between it and herself, she charged. Unfortunately, she didn't have the charge skill yet, but that didn't matter. She had enough energy. She brought her spear up diagonally as she got within distance, carving a gridded, red streak along it before it disappeared into the air. "That's one. Two more, and that...definitely won't be a problem."

  7. Vally hadn't been paying too much attention to what Black had been saying, in truth. Partially because most of it seemed to be meaningless banter, which she only indulged in at her own whims, and partially because she didn't get half the jokes he was making. Probably because there weren't many black people in Japan, so the stereotypes weren't nearly as prevalent. If anything, their stereotypes were about the same as other foreigners. However, what did catch her attention was the talk of him being the best tank and best merchant. A gleam came to her red eyes at that statement, and she glanced to him. "I really shouldn't be surprised the person called Shield is the best tank around. It'd be an embarrassment not to be, really. Merchant was unexpected, though."

The plum-haired woman's attention then moved to Aris, or Hydra as she'd just introduced herself. "I'll go with Hydra, I think. Easier to call out when I need healing, if what the shortstack earlier said is anything to go by", she replied with a smirk. She wanted to see how Mutsu would respond to the nickname, at least once she escaped from the marshmallow hell that Hydra was currently subjecting her to.

With Mutsu apparently having an idea, a shiver ran down Vally's spine. She got that idea that this girl's ideas weren't always the brightest, but not going along with it would probably end up making things take longer than arguing about it, so she wandered over to the fountain and took a seat, crossing her long legs. "If this involves me getting wet, Shield's warning about orange players may end up holding some water", she stated in a manner that didn't make it quite clear whether that was a joke or not.

  8. Vally chuckled deeply in response to Mars' sarcastic remark. He was easy to get along with, for her at least, although she doubted either of the two were particularly easy to deal with by others. But she preferred it that way. It meant that the people who did stick around her actually did enjoy her presence, at least to some extent. Once he started listing off the professions, however, she started listening, instead of thinking on that. Only two high-rank cooks, huh? That might be a good option, but the stuff she'd get from being a Tailor would last her forever. Unless she got a really, really good drop from a floor boss, but that likely wouldn't be for a good long while.

"Going solo all the time is boring. I might do it every now and then for quick quests, but most of the time I'd prefer to have company. I'm not always as grumpy as I look, surprisingly enough", she replied with a one-armed shrug. "Anyway, I reckon I'll go for being a tailor. I'll need to get my light armour from somewhere, after all. That's what keeps me alive. Dying because I decided to be a cook instead of a tailor would be a really bad way to go."

  9. Vally didn't seem bothered in the slightest about the fact that Mars wouldn't be able to help. She just gave a nonchalant shrug in response. "Hey, means more practice for me. I'm not worried about dying to these anyway." The spear-woman had jogged to get ahead of the martial artist, before she stopped and looked back at him, a hand on her chest and a mock heartfelt expression on her face. "I'm sooo glad you worry so much about me though...", she replied in a clearly insincere tone, before chuckling and starting to walk. "I do have some stuff you can help with anyway though. Can talk about it on the way."

With that said, Vally set off properly to find where the boar pups would be, spear in hand. "Aaaanyway, what I was thinking of. I need to figure out what I wanna do for my profession here. Blacksmith, tailor and cook are all good options really, but I dunno if any of them are missing out on high-tier people for that profession. You probably know more about that than me. Any suggestions?"

  10. It really seemed like there was nothing on Black's mind but dirty things, and that realisation caused Vally to let out an exhausted sigh. She could already tell dealing with this guy was going to be an exercise in patience. While validation was nice, she knew herself just how attractive she was. Even being shy in the real world, she'd made an effort to keep herself looking good. However, that annoyance with him quickly faded as he produced an admittedly delicious looking meal. She wasn't really sure what he meant by black people and chicken, but that was a side-thought at best while she focused on that. The spear-woman graciously took the sushi roll and examined it, before she popped half of it into her mouth. "Hmm...I guessh I can forgive your pervertednessh thish time", she stated, before gulping it down. Her attempt to hide the pleased look on her face failed spectacularly. "I'll have to keep that in mind for when I do that quest then", she replied somewhat absent-mindedly, before finishing off the sushi roll.

Vally rolled her eyes at the 'saviour' that had approached. Taiga appreciated the thought, really, but they'd also had to deal with just as many white knights trying to nice-guy their way into their pants as they had the ones being more overt about it. At least the perverts like Black were easy to read and figure out if they were useful enough to put up with it, but Vally hadn't found any on the opposite side who hadn't royally ticked her off within minutes of their meeting. But this guy didn't seem to be taking it very far at least. "I'm capable of looking after myself, and I feel like that little bundle of hyperactiveness is positively revelling in it", she snarked dryly, gesturing to Mutsu. Hydra had shown herself that she was like that, so she didn't even feel the need to mention her.

"Since you asked, I'm Vally. You're Aris, I'm guessing, judging by your underclassman's crowing?" The spear-woman seemed to be a little less snarky with Hydra. She was a likeable woman, she supposed. That underlying hint of not taking anyone's sh*t combined with her calmness was probably the source of that.

Vally decided not to humour Mutsu with a response about giving Black a nosebleed. It'd probably only encourage him. "I'm willing to go along, so long as we have a good tank. I've heard that's a pretty difficult quest, but it gives a great weapon reward." She then turned to Black with a smirk and a sharp look in her eye, arms folded. "I guess you can make up for your perverted ways by taking the hits for us."

  11. Vally stepped out of Lyle's workshop after having accepted the second quest in the tutorial chain, and flashed a surprisingly...eager grin at Mars. She was looking forward to being able to finally fight something. "I was waiting for the combat tutorial quest, looks like this is it. Gotta go kill some boar pups. This is where that farming back when SAO started will come in handy, 'cause they won't even be able to hurt me, unless the quest buffs them beyond the maximum for most mobs. But considering this is a tutorial quest, I doubt that greatly", she stated, with something approaching pride in her voice. "Plus with you coming along, you'll probably one-shot them. Unless you wait on the sidelines to see how I do, I guess."

With that said, the spear-woman pulled her weapon from her back and tapped the haft against the ground. It gave a satisfying metallic noise. "I dunno why, but that sound is really satisfying for some reason...anyway, you ready to go?"

  12. It took even less time for the two to arrive at Lyle's workshop. The blacksmith. Really, Vally needed to wonder about what she'd be doing as a profession. Blacksmith would help with grinding out good enhancements for her weapons, while Tailor would help with armour and accessories. On the other hand, cooking would be good for the consumables. Perhaps it would be a good idea to look into how many people there were of each, and ask Mars for any advice on that stuff. He seemed quite helpful, after all. She was getting on with him rather well, really. Perhaps because they were both focused on their in-game ability. Still, Vally didn't want to get attached to him. Not yet, at least. Just in case.

"Riiiight, here we go then. Let's get in and finish the last step! Y'know in hindsight, maybe I should have been a livestreamer, considering how much I talk to myself. Might have made better money on that than being a cashier. Everyone loves the pretty gamer girls, after all...", she commented dryly.

  13. Vally was quick to start marching back to Zackariah's workshop, and she answered along the way, clearly pleased that they'd managed to farm up those materials pretty quickly. "Ah, that would be a good idea. Man, I wish there were more mod slots, there's so many others that'd be really useful for the build...I think I'd have to use Trickster, Vanish, Quick Change and Finesse to be able to do it effectively", she responded, a hand finding its way to rest on her chin. Man, theory-crafting like this always got her pumped up, really. The maths, less-so, but she'd always enjoyed finding the best strategies to defeat enemies and other players.

Once the duo returned to the town, and to the workshop, Vally quickly made her way inside and rushed to get started. She didn't want to waste time, after all. It didn't take long to get through the process of creating the potion, but she gave an exhasperated sound as Zackariah took the potion. "Damn...that was even Perfect, too.Well, let's hope all my crafting rolls turn out that good!", she muttered to herself indignantly.

And now, of course, she was being asked to deliver something, but no doubt this would lead them to the next quest. "Right! Lyle'll be starting the next quest in this chain, right? Let's get to him."

    [Roll ID #107679 CD: 12]

  14. "Well, for the accuracy I wouldn't need to worry. Trickster also makes me unable to miss, somehow. I guess it works like aim assist. Anyway, once I've opened with that, preferably combined with a Charge, I'll switch to a better weapon and lay into them. 2-Handed Assault Spears have the highest damage, which really helps with that. With that kind of burst damage right at the start, it might even end up tilting them and making them panic", she explained further, with a sagely nod to herself.

Vally's eyes glimmered as she finally alighted on the last herb she needed, with a brilliant smirk. "Aha! There you are! Get it, you pain in the...ahem. Right, let's get back to that NPC's place so I can finish this up. Then we can move on to the rest of the chain, and I can get some levels under my belt. Then I'll finally be on my way towards being the best DPS around. That'd certainly be nice..."

    [Roll ID #107678 LD: 14]

  15. Vally grabbed another herb from the ground, which disappeared into her inventory, before she stroked her chin. "Oh really? I was thinking of going for Stealth, at least in PvP. I was looking at all the skills and I figured I'd be pretty difficult to beat if I abused Trickster with a weapon loaded down with one paralysis enhancement, and the rest as bleed. It'd all automatically proc so they'd be stunned, and the bleed would ignore their mitigation. That one Stealth mod would let me just re-enter Stealth while they're stunned. It'd take a while, but they'd be completely unable to fight back. The only real counter would be people with Searching, in which I'd have to switch to a different weapon and just hope my build is better than theirs", she explained.

While going into the intricacies of her build with someone she'd just met probably wasn't the best idea, this guy was far higher level than herself, so if he had wanted to kill her, he'd have done so already. He could have been waiting for her to actually get good gear, she supposed, but he wasn't an orange player...it'd probably be fine. "Right, only one more to go! Now watch the RNG take a divebomb..."

    [Roll ID #107671 LD: 15]

  16. Vally raised her eye at the dark-skinned man who'd approached. Interesting. Most of the people she'd seen tended to keep at least some semblance of trying to act like they were in a fantasy game. But a roleplayer, this man was not, apparently.

While she was usually oblivious to most implications and other such things, that one was too on the nose for even Vally to miss. Performing, climbing poles...a shiver ran down her spine as the word 'Balmung' crossed through her head, before she shook it off. Part of her did wonder if...such a thing was in SAO, though. After all, people often turned to that in the face of death.

The reaction from the apparently perverted player caused Vally to take a sharp breath. Her eyes turned sharp and cold for a few moments, before he started to get on track with more relevant things. Like food. Vally had always enjoyed cooking, and by extension eating, in real life, and if she recalled, rank 5 was halfway to the maximum. Maybe he could make up for the pervyness by feeding her. "If your food is good enough, I might not have as much of an issue with you ogling", she replied, before realising that probably came out more like an invitation rather than for him to make it up to her. Ugh, whatever. He was level 20, so frightening him off from helping with this would be a pain. She gave a quick sigh before answering. "It'd probably have to be karaage chicken or chicken katsu, since you asked. If you can make sushi well enough, that shouldn't be a problem."

Fortunately, someone else had arrived to save the spear-woman from this. Judging from that quick interaction, she seemed to be the motherly type? It was always hard to tell though. 'Mutsu' seemed nice enough, if a tad...jingly for her tastes. "Well, I...suppose this looks like a good group. Our resident pervert/cook should be able to tank for us..."

  17. "I dunno, I'm not so sure. Get your mitigation high enough and lower-level players won't even be able to hurt you, for example. That's my strategy for the first couple floors. On this floor, apart from a few special enemies, monsters just don't deal enough damage to bypass my mitigation. Likewise, I doubt my damage can bypass yours. There comes a point where the stat disparity is so high that someone could literally fall asleep and others wouldn't be able to defeat them. Fortunately, there's a level cap, but for people powerlevelling ahead of the rest...well, y'know" Vally shrugged as she looked around the area, a small frown on her face.

"I hate...rrgh. Speaking of RNG, wanna go see if you can find a chest or something? Who knows, you might have more luck than me!", she suggested, a slightly grating tone of annoyance in her voice. "That'd be a nice consolation prize, at least. Some loot to split between us while I dance around trying to find these herbs. Although if my luck is rubbing off on you, it'll end up being a freaking mimic..."

    [Roll ID #107626 LD: 5]

  18. Vally took in a breath of thought at the sound of the voice ringing through the plaza. Was shouting out like that entirely necessary? She supposed this was the equivalent of people yelling 'W2S [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]' or ''W2B trash rivens 100p' in the other MMO or vaguely-MMOish games that she'd played. At least this person was actually being useful, though. Looking for a group to help with a pretty nice-sounding quest was fine, and if they were looking for a group for a quest-chain, then it'd be worth joining up, she figured.

With that in mind, the black-clad spear-woman approached the girl standing on her pike, and looked upwards. Thank goodness she wasn't wearing a skirt, because Vally would have had some burning comment, for sure. Although considering her own 'armour', she couldn't say too much about modesty. But, whatever. "Hey! Looking for a group? I'll join up if we can get some other people going on this", she called up, raising a hand to shield her eyes from the sun. Freaking godrays...

  19. The frontlines falling to infighting would certainly be a bad thing. The frontlines were the vanguard for clearing SAO, after all. If they were to break apart and fall into anarchy, who knows how long it would take to form up again so they could start clearing floors, and hell, the amount of people dying from such a thing might even leave them unable to even clear the game. What would happen then? Would Kayaba pull the plug upon realising that it would be impossible to complete? Or would people be forced down to die, to escape the game? That was a sobering thought.

"Yeah, with the way stats work in SAO, after a certain point it's impossible to beat higher-level players..." she commented idly, before giving a small noise of victory. "Aha! There you are, you annoying little...three down. Let's hope I find the last two quickly...and don't mess up on making that potion, too. I really don't wanna have to do this all over again."

    [Roll ID #107610 LD: 18]

  20. That would indeed suck. Vally sincerely hoped she wouldn't encounter any bugs herself, although she found herself thinking that creating a game like this without bugs would be a bigger accomplishment than the NerveGear itself. It was only a matter of time most likely. Hell, maybe her not being able to find any materials here was a bug too, but she decided to give it another once-over to see if there were any she'd missed in her annoyance. The one thing Vally hated about MMOs was all the farming and grinding.

"Speaking of 'too strong for their own good', we're lucky the top players haven't turned to rampant PKing, at least as far as I know. 'With great power comes great responsibility', as Uncle Ben once said. I'm really surprised the the top levels aren't just players picking on lower levels. Pretty much every MMO with PvP in all areas but towns has had that, in my experience. But, I guess the fact that they'd be killing actual people put off more people than I expected. My faith in humanity is truly restored..." The last line came across completely deadpan, before Vally shrugged. "Damned random spawns..."

    [Roll ID #107609 LD: 2]

  21. Vally laughed again. Yeah, that sounded about right. "Man, I hope that skill isn't bugged. Imagine that. Being stuck in a life-or-death game and it's buggy! I'd feel sorry for the poor sap who dies from clipping through the floor and falling into the void, or whose cool new weapon doesn't render properly. That'd suck pretty bad. Although I guess the latter could be really useful in PvP...Wait, fishing can make enemies appear? That's...interesting. I guess you're still getting SP from killing it? "

The spear-woman was really talking to herself more than anything. This time, she frowned as she looked around. "Guess I did jinx it, I don't see anything. Freaking...RNG...ugh. I hope this doesn't take too long, I don't wanna be getting held up by RNG in the tutorial, I wanna get this over and done with as quickly as possible."

Vally tapped her foot impatiently in thought, before moving on to another area. "By the way, you got any buffs to finding stuff, or something like that? Might be worth looking for a chest or a sub-dungeon once we've finished up gathering all this stuff, but I doubt my chances for finding that stuff is great right now, since I just started."

    [Roll ID #107594 LD: 10]

  22. Vally snorted and chuckled a little, before giving a nod. "Lots of RNG, huh? That's always a pain. One of my guildmates in my first MMO had absolutely abysmal luck, while mine was pretty good. Beginner's luck, I guess. We spent weeks grinding for a transmog item for him, once. I'd need to start using my toes to count how many times it dropped for me. Too bad it was an account-locked item...", she mused out loud.

It was certainly a true thing, that some people would just go insane from all the grinding and farming. Vally had never really been one to enjoy it herself, but she'd always managed to make friends quickly in MMOs, so it became far less monotonous. "Having friends around turns it from mind-numbing to just something to do in the background, really. Speaking of..." Vally grabbed another material that she'd noticed out of the corner of her eye. "I'd say we're doing well, but I don't wanna jinx it."

    [Roll ID #107593 LD: 19]

  23. Indeed, Vally was willing to do near-enough anything to progress within SAO. Having to kill a mindless program wouldn't stop her, that's for certain. Some people got sentimental about such things, but the spear-woman was focused entirely on winning and being stronger. Now, she even had a more world-focused goal of being the best DPS around. Both of those goals were quite far ahead, however, and no doubt would take a large amount of effort. But for now, small steps. To be the best DPS, she first had to be a DPS at all, and right now she was actually more focused on surviving. She'd managed to farm a rare armour before SAO had truly started and got someone to enhance it with some mitigation, enough that none of the monsters on the first floor could even hurt her. But of course, that meant she was probably behind in DPS compared to other two-handed users, for now.

Hearing Mars' words, Vally nodded, her smirk having returned to her face. "Good to know, I'll need the guidance of a more experience player so I know the best choices to make, especially if there are branching quests with different rewards", she stated, before following him out of the town.

Almost immediately after they arrived at the gathering location, the plum-haired woman scanned the area for the materials they needed. Fortunately, she'd already managed to find one. "Okay, good, one down and four to go. Let's hope we don't have to do this for too long."

    [Roll ID #107591 LD: 12]

  24. It seemed this guy was the philosopher type. At least to Vally. That was hard to deal with. She didn't really know what would constitute an 'acceptable' answer to them, so she was never quite sure what their reaction would be. Although she couldn't really say she could predict that kind of thing for other people, either. "Hm...I guess just winning this game. Being the best DPS would be nice, I've never gotten quite that prestigious in other MMOs before. That might be something to pursue, I guess. Standing out as one of the best", she decided after a small moment.

"As for that...well, whatever it takes. I mean short of PKing, I guess. NPCs aren't people, so making 'bad' choices in quests to get better rewards won't hold me back. Plus I'll need every advantage I can get to make sure I don't die", the spear-woman explained, eyes roaming over the town. She couldn't wait to get out of here and onto bigger, better things, where she could grow even stronger.
