Mind the girl?
He eyed the NPC curiously, still stuck in her sobbing routine on loop.
No, I don't think I will.
Slow, long strides carried Bahr from one room to the next, where it seemed his companions were already embroiled in frenetic combat, appendages thrown amid Swort Arts against more NPCs like seasoning sprinkled into a mushroom sauté. His saunter brought him between the injured baddies, and a simple motion traced a crimson semicircle around his form and through them. Two more fractal combustions heralded their end.
"Crying in the first room stopped," Bahr noted, the silence becoming thick as all members of the party honed in on its intrusion. Bahr's suspicions regarding the girl hadn't changed - in fact it was now more suspicious than ever that the loop had ceased. Bahr was familiar with the cadence of these impromptu dungeons Cardinal liked to populate the floating castle with, and there was always a boss monster right around now.

"Actually, I still need at least this one."

"Hey, uh, I'd like to get some armor if possible?"
The words stirred Bahr from his inner monologue his senses coming back to the present kicking and screaming. He regarded the young fellow with an absent look and a slow blink. Those aware of Bahr's more brooding personality quirks may have assumed he were scheming or otherwise fuming over something he couldn't control.
Far from it. In this instance, he'd been staring at the same two fabrics for over an hour, and couldn't decide between the two of them for a project he'd been working on. One was a rick velvet violet, whereas the other was a soft, fluffy lilac. Perhaps taking a break and tending to the youth's order would better align his preferences.
"Sure, shouldn't take but a moment. You look kinda new, too, so this one's on the house."
True to his word, the garment was ready in less than five minutes. He placed it gingerly on the countertop for the boy to inspect and recentered his gaze on the warring fabrics in question. "Hope this works for you. Stay safe out there."

In the same instant she drew her knife, she'd find the distance closed, and the tip of Forgotten King's Spite resting gently against the edge of her blade. Crimson and verdant orbs would pierce through the shade and form a connection with hers, ennui keeping his expression and tone dispassionate as he carefully enunciated the proclamation, "Not a fight you want, and not one I aimed to start." Though the indifference in his stare indicated there was no harm intended, his gaze would not leave hers until that little toy was put away.
"You’ve got a death wish or something?" What a squeaky little thing. "Sneaking up on people like that- !" No sooner had she sheathed her blade than Freyd shoulder checked the building, creating a cavity into some sort of depraved scene concocted by Cardinal to illicit the greatest emotional response possible. Judging by the expressions worn by his colleagues, it seemed to be a success.
Simulated children, and their pleas for help turned siren song by Cardinal; aimed to lure in those who'd called its macabre prison home for far too long. With each passing year, the system's imitation of life became more granular, more grim. It had had over eighty-thousand hours of studying thousands of Players. Figuring out what made them tick, and what made that ticker break. Aincrad had slowly let go of the cutesy MMO facade with which it had started, reconstituting as a carefully tailored nightmare simulator that hosted all manner of harrowing machinations and bewitching manipulations. Many Players had already fallen victim to seeing these virtual machines - the very tools meticulously designed to bring about their destruction - as close enough to 'human' to conjure emotional connections such as compassion or empathy. Those who saw the ruse for what it was, like Bahr, were regarded as borderline heartless by the rest.
Oh well. At least there might be some loot in it for them.
While the other three piled into Freyd's hole, Bahr's long strides carried him quickly to the front door, which opened with a lackadaisical twist of the handle. As it creaked open, he'd witness four distinct glints rush across the scene in rapid succession, each burying itself into one of the men present that separated the party from the 'helpless' little girl in the far corner. All four of the NPCs would turn their heads toward Bahr as their detection subroutines registered the intrusion. He pointed at the one furthest from the entrance with the tip of his blade, which now glowed red and hummed with the whine of a prepped Sword Art, waiting for the exact moment the recoil from Circe's knives aligned them all directly in front of him.
"Pierce."
As though a command which spurred the system into action, the distance between that furthest thug and the hovel's entrance collapsed from Bahr's point of view. Forgotten King's Spite lodged deeply into a beam supporting the wall, all four skulls of the opposition skewered along its length up to the hilt. They'd remain there for a moment, dumb and slack-jawed, until all four combusted into a miasma of fractal shards. Once the bodies had evaporated, he unburied the blade from the rotting oak and cast a wary glance to the small girl.
Wonder if that thing will be the next to try and kill us.

Bahr smiled as his arm interlocked with Mac's, but it was to be a short reunion. No sooner had they coalesced their recognition with one another than the meeting started underway in earnest. Bahr quickly found his seat alongside Mac, and buckled in for the explanation from Freyd and any relevant information he may have seen fit to share. He listened intently as the man shared his experience with the crowd, waiting for some actionable intel to land, and then it just... didn't.
Apprehensively, Bahr's mismatched eyes darted back and forth, looking for reactions from his comrades. It was such a brief and ambiguous description that almost nothing meaningful could be gleaned from it. Though, it seemed Bahr was alone in his concerns. One after another, the Frontliners piped up, sharing their theories as to what might be waiting for them in the boss chamber. It seemed that everyone had landed on some sort of reanimation gimmick, but Bahr couldn't see it fitting the theme of the floor. Had there been anything else throughout the floor to suggest zombie shenanigans were afoot? All they knew for sure was the creature was big, and liked to take a bite out of people.
Liked to take a bite...
He cleared his throat. "Hey folks, I'm Bahr. Off-DPS, sort of a bruiser-type build. I can alternate with tanks using the Switch mechanic for small windows of time to allow for heals if things get dicey." He cut the introduction short there - no need to get into the weeds with it. "It's possible that we're looking at reanimation, but I'm not sure I'm totally convinced that's the case. The only parallel I could see in the floor's motif that would connect to it would be the season of Fall representing 'death,' but I don't know. It just isn't clicking. There aren't any undead anywhere else on the floor."
He allowed for a brief pause to allow for any responses, as well as to take a brief gander at those around. Sometimes, going against the grain didn't land well.
"You said this happened in the Fire Forest, right?" Bahr asked, directing both the inquiry and his attention to Freyd. "There are a lot of mutated animals there. The floor boss may be the source. Now, I'm not sure if there have been reports detailing these mutants as more aggressive than your typical mob, but there is something off about them. I'm not sure if this contributes to our speculation, but might be worth keeping in the back of our minds if anyone here has seen anything strange in relation to the albino mobs."
"More importantly," he continued, "It sounds to me like the boss was feasting on the corpses there. It's possible that there may end up being a mechanic where to boss consumes the bodies to grant itself higher MIT, or heal off damage, or both." Another brief pause allowed the point to land, before he summarized. "Whether or not we're looking at resurrection, or some sort of feasting mechanic, I think we can all agree that the corpses being present instead of pixelized stands out as something we should be paying attention to. Do we think it might be worth it to have someone try to target the corpses upon entering the arena, with something that might be able to destroy them? The only thing that comes to mind would be the Burn Enhancement - of which I am a practitioner, and surely others here are as well."
-
While others may have found themselves uncomfortable within such a setting, Bahr was right at home. To the contrary, he found that the more ostentatious venues were the ones that filled him with unease. Here, the depravity and hopelessness made the danger easy to pick out, and he could make out where trouble might come from before it was in his face. There was no effort made by the denizens of this wretched squalid locale to hide who they were. Bahr had found that, when surrounded by the folks who tried their hardest to look their best at all times, he could never truly tell which had their blades pointed his way. They bore teeth all the same, but concealed them behind a veil of faux puritanism and empty platitudes.
There was no such deception here.
"Freyd," he'd hear someone enunciate, more a low rumble than spoken word. But the moniker was recognized all the same, drawing recognition and the attention of Bahr's Christmas orbs. That was a name he hadn't heard in quite some time. A curious pair, one dainty and the other burly, stared into the thick blackness that coated a nearby alleyway. He surmised the larger of the two had been the one to invoke Freyd's name.
It would be like Freyd to skulk a medium as such. Though, Bahr was hardly one to talk, seeing as his own stealth made him imperceptible. Like layers uncoiling around him, reality itself seemed to part and make room for his sudden appearance, far enough away from the gaggle of mismatched Players so as not to spook them. Though, it may not have mattered, with their backs turned to him like this. He approached, footsteps silent, the silhouette of their shared interest finally taking form amidst the shadows.
"You gonna keep hanging out in that alley?" Bahr asked over the shoulders of the other two, taking care to have at least one heel ready to pivot in case one or the other were shocked enough by his sudden intrusion to start swinging. He'd crane his head to the side, toward the direction of the screaming, and gesture with a nod. "Assuming you're here to deal with that."

Had been quite some time, but Bahr was back up to his bullshit. Seeing as his consumables stock had run low, he surmised that now was a proper time to mobilize on a solid restock. Demian had always been the guy when it came to his food needs, at least ever since he and Oscar had had their falling out. Suffice to say, considering the cook was mobile, it wasn't quite as convenient as just walking next door to get his hands on some food.
But Demian's quality was worth the search.
"Long time no see," he said, regarding the cook with a nod. "I'll take some of these."

"So this is the spot I've been hearing all about," Bahr mused as he swung the door wide, heavy steps carrying him inward and toward the bartop Oz was tending. "Who would have guessed they'd have a rat running the place? Figured the health department might have a problem with that sort of thing."
Bahr let himself behind the counter, perusing the various bottles as Oz stood motionless, his grey orbs affixed steadfast against the glass he was polishing in his hands. Bahr smirked and let loose a huff of amusement, slowly making his way closer and closer to the barkeep with each meandering step. "Nothing to say, loudmouth? What's the matter? You know we're in a safe zone, right?" His fingers slid around the neck of a bottle which had struck his fancy, plucking the vessel from the shelf and inspecting it closely. Upon realizing it wasn't the potion he was looking for, he replaced it and continued his search, slowly moving ever closer to Oz. "Or is it just that you only feel like popping off when you feel like your victims don't know where you work?" He found another bottle. Picked it up, and set this one down on the counter. Then leaned in real close to Oz, who still refused to cast a glance his direction.
"Where you live."
Feeling like he'd made his point, Bahr took a step back and collected the bottle he'd set aside.
"You don't mind if I take these, right? Course not. You owe me for the work I've done for you, after all."
Without another word, Bahr turned to take his leave.

My, they were a sociable bunch.
Bahr's mismatched eyes scanned the gaggle of Frontliners as he skulked his way into the room, taking care to avoid any eye contact lest be find himself drawn into some conversation he had no desire to be a part of. It wasn't that they were bad people. They were just... not his type. Many of the faces he found were ones he knew, but there were a few that eluded his recognition. There would be time for introductions after Bahr had decided whether or not he truly intended to stick around. A part of him was already feeling like coming out of his short-lived 'retirement' had been a bad idea.
But, so far as he could tell, it was necessary. Compared to previous meetings he had attended, the numbers here were sparse. Raids had historically humbled Bahr when compared to his performance in standard content, so it wasn't as though he fancied himself as some sort of Frontliner Jesus here to save everyone from the Big Bad. Any warm body was better than a vacant slot in the roster when things were running this thin. And just where was everyone, anyway? Were the faces he was expecting, but did not see, belonging to fellow retirees? Was he simply early?
Or had just that many of them managed to die?
And, hell, why were so many of them dressed up in suits?
Not far away, he locked eyes with about the only person here he felt familiar enough with to hang around with. He offered Macradon a stiff nod before navigating through the crowd, slinking around his would-be interlocutors with expert precision, so as to avoid making them more directly aware of his presence. Once he'd closed the distance, he regarded his comrade with a smile and a palm extended for a handshake.
"Mac, good to see you."

Bahr walked in silence beside her, his boots hitting the ground with a rhythm as steady as the thoughts churning in his mind. When she'd taken her seat on that vacant bench outside the makeshift prison, he'd felt every compulsion to console her. To take a seat beside her and rub her back, tell her everything was going to be alright. A hand absently extended to do just that, but was retracted before she'd feel its warmth. The platitude would have been as useless as it was dishonest; nothing was a guarantee when it came to this cult and its aberrant ideology. All of that aside, it was no longer his role to comfort her in that way. Perhaps his new role was to maintain focus for the both of them until they'd seen this challenge through.
"I'm so sorry, It’s just a lot.”
Then silent stillness hung in the air, and that hand found its way to her shoulder after all. Its presence would have to suffice where words could not.
All at once, the Guardian of Aincrad collected herself and rose to her feet once more. She expressed that she wasn't 'okay' (as though Bahr hadn't surmised that by now), but that she would do what she could to keep it together for Oliver's sake. And if she could not, Bahr decided in that moment to play anchor once more. It was the least he could do, after everything she'd done for him.
Every step they took toward the teleportation plaza was another second away from Dominic’s poisonous presence and, for that alone, he was grateful. However still, the imprisoned lunatic's proclamations and insinuations turned within him, twisting their cryptic nettles ever deeper each time they were replayed in his mind's eye. So much of what the man had said was plainly designed to manipulate or misdirect, and the more he thought of it, the more Bahr couldn't be certain that what they'd settled on wasn't just more of the same. Something "close to the heavens" was still ambiguous enough that he wondered if he'd cut their interview too short. It could mean practically anything.
Dominic had chosen his words carefully, there was no doubt about that. The man was too obsessed with his grandiose narrative to be careless. If the location they sought was truly linked to something holy in Dominic’s delusional theology, it wouldn’t be a simple guess. No, it had to be a place Dominic himself revered - somewhere he believed salvation could be found.
He felt Lessa brush against him as she sidestepped the passerby, and instinctively, his hand came up to steady her before dropping back to his side. His gaze didn’t leave the teleportation gate as she spoke, but her words rippled through his mind, adding weight to his own thoughts. Smart or delusional? He couldn’t help but allow the faintest trace of a bitter smile to curl his lips. Dominic was both - a lethal combination of intelligence and madness. That’s what made him dangerous. He didn’t have to plan everything; he was the kind of man who thrived on chaos, drawing power from the unpredictability of it all.
As Lessa confessed her uncertainty, her voice cracking just slightly under the pressure, Bahr’s golden eyes flicked toward her. The weight of her struggle was palpable. He admired her for holding it together, in spite of it all. Had it not mattered so much to keep is own head, he was sure his silence would have already been replaced by blind rage. They could both shoulder the burden of this, together. For now.
He exhaled slowly through his nose, gaze narrowing as he tried to make sense of the puzzle. "You’re right," he replied, his voice low but steady, "it probably doesn’t matter if Dominic planned this all from the start or if he’s just grabbing onto the chaos now. The end result’s the same." His jaw tightened as his mind sifted through everything they knew, piecing together the fragments Dominic had tossed their way. "But this talk of being 'close to the heavens'... it feels like more than just theatrics. Dominic believes in this stuff, as twisted as it is. And if he sees Everest and the others as part of his 'flock,' he wouldn’t send them somewhere random."
He turned his gaze to Lessa, the intensity in his eyes cutting through the chaos around them. "It has to be a place he views as sacred. Somewhere that fits his vision of reaching the Light or salvation. I’d bet Dawn's Demise it’s something high up - either physically or symbolically."
The plaza bustled around them, the hum of voices and the chime of bells from nearby shops melding into an indistinct background. But Bahr’s focus remained razor-sharp, his mind mapping out the potential destinations within the game’s sprawling world. "Mountain or tower… they’re both possibilities." His lips pressed into a thin line as he considered the implications. Then, all at once, the answer made itself clear, his eyes flickering off into the middle distance as he probed the possibility internally.
"Hey... Aincrad's kinda like a tower, right?" His gaze returned to meet with hers once more. "What if 'close to the heavens' is even more literal than we're thinking? He said, 'closest or nearest to heaven,' whichever it was, and 'much like I did when I founded Sanctuary.' Almost feels like a qualifier, like, 'It was closest to the heavens when I found it.' Hang on-" With that, he summoned a panel and began to compose.
QuoteTo: Olivia, Lessa
Was the third floor the highest unlocked floor when Sanctuary was established?
- Bahr
There really was no telling if the theory would bear any fruit. But it wasn't like they had much else to go off of, other than the cryptic bullshit about the cycle of life meeting its end to make way for the 'Light.' He shot the message off, taking care to include Lessa, and dismissed the panel. "Teleport, Glyndebourne," he vocalized, and the portal came to life. "It's just a theory, but we can explore it while we wait for corroboration. Worst case, I'm wrong and we end up needing to shift gears. Still better than standing around here. Let's go."- - -
Twenty-Eighth Floor, Glyndebourne, Teleport Plaza.
Autumnal bloom greeted the duo as their forms materialized in the town square, vivid yellows and oranges spreading out before them as far as the eye could see. It was Bahr's first time visiting the floor and, though it was gorgeous, he couldn't take the time to gawk at it just yet. There was a chance something sinister was brewing beneath all of this beauty, and for that reason he kept his focus narrowed to the task at hand. "I'm thinking a church, or mausoleum, maybe. He mentioned something about death. Maybe a church with a graveyard attached?" He spoke as he took long strides toward the stables, which had been programmed to be visible from the teleport gate. "I haven't been to this floor yet, so I'm not sure where one might be. But I've heard that it's hard to get around here without a horse."
He stopped for a moment, as though suddenly remembering that horses were one of Lessa's favorite things in the world. He turned to regard her, an amused smirk dashing across his features. "I'm sure that just breaks your heart."

Bahr inspected the garments, then poured over the form Morningstar had provided which detailed the desired final product. Bahr couldn't rightly say he didn't appreciate the direction Star was going with this, even if it wasn't really his cup of tea. But then again, was it Morningstar's cup of tea, either?
"An easy enough task," he decided, before retrieving both vestments and retreating to his little workshop in the back room.
After some time (and a bit of swearing, which may or may not have been audible from the showroom), Bahr returned with the finished product. It was a beautiful thing, but the crimson crusader regarded it with disdain. "Yeah, not as easy as I thought, actually. Some pieces didn't really want to fit... But I figured it out." He laid it upon the counter for his customer's inspection. "Think this'll do?"

His eyes narrowed as he heard that grating voice booming over the doorbell, and a sigh escaped his lips. It seemed the green asshole was back. Wasn't a single, agonizing visit enough to get whatever the fuck he was trying to do out of his system?
He stared blankly as Oz explained something about "goons" that Bahr had supposedly sent after him, cocking his head in mild confusion. "Sincerely, I don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about. Maybe people are after you because you're a dick. I can't be the only one that hates you."
Then there was the items. No further word, no nothing. A silent request - no, demand that Bahr fuse the artifacts before him. Maybe if he did, it would get Oz to leave him alone once and for all.

More people, more people. So many people, lately. And this one had a name that stuck out like a sore thumb.
His eyes narrowed as she struggled to spit out her order, unfocused eyes scanning some sort of note it seemed she had made for herself. Something about the practice, and her, pissed Bahr off. Perhaps it was because she'd had the audacity to use that name. Not like she would have known any better.
For a moment, he considered barking at her to use the order form that was plainly visible from where she stood. But she was a low level, and Bahr had decided long ago that he'd do whatever he could to help the noobs get more appropriately geared up to survive out there. Even if he did harbor (admittedly illogical) disdain for the woman, she still qualified.
"Sure. First one's free. After that, you pay."
It took more attempts than any piece had taken him in recent memory. He could only chalk it up to lack of focus. But, eventually, he managed to cobble together what she'd asked for.
"Here," he spat sourly as he tossed the garment onto the counter between them. "Don't die."

There was skepticism in Bahr's eye as he inspected first the custom order form, and then the woman who had given it to him. Based on what she was wearing, basically anything would have done better. He waved his hand through the air as though to dismiss the notion of payment.
"Always on the house for noobs."
With that, he retreated to his crafting room in the back and got to work. Within only a few minutes, he had a craft which fit the criteria for her request. He brought it out to her for inspection, laying it across the counter.

Bahr scrunched his facial features as he thumbed through his inventory until he came across something old. Something forgotten. He tapped the item and, a moment later it had materialized in his palms. He rolled the item over within his digits, inspecting it for any use. So far as he could tell, there was no use that he had for it. The description gave him the impression that it would straight up kill Swine Bajesus.
He dropped it on the ground. No use hanging onto something like that.

"See, was that so hard?"
You have no idea.
Though Bahr kept his mouth shut, so as to not invite more provocation or threatening from his interlocutor, his face said it all. He'd never been the sort to be capable of properly hiding his emotions. Strewn across his visage, the amalgamation of things he was feeling, and his intent, were abundantly clear.
Were we not here, I'd be hurting you as much as you just hurt me.
Then, a newcomer. The doorbell chimed, an announcement of their arrival. A petite woman, perhaps a bit straightlaced, but with a good eye for fashion. A welcome interruption.
"I'll be seein' ya." With that, Oz turned to make his exit.
"Yeah, can't wait," came Bahr's flat response. Perhaps it had been spit a bit more forcefully than he had met. Such things were bound to happen whilst bottling up that sort of emotional pressure.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, steeling himself for the next interaction. This woman had done nothing wrong, and he'd need to be careful not to allow his lingering irritation seep into the following interaction.
"Entitled customers," she started, and Bahr nodded, appreciative of her understanding. "Still open? I have a custom order." There was a slight temptation to close shop instead, but she was quite polite, and her soft-spokenness helped to ease a bit of the lingering tension. Certainly more palatable than whoever the fuck that just was.
He retrieved the parchment from her and inspected it, slowing down to reread it again after finishing the first time. He cast her a knowing glance, then back to the paper, then back to her once more. He'd seen a very similar request just recently. Just what did he have to do with her?
"This shouldn't be a problem. Just give me a few moments."
As promised, the craft didn't take long. It was easier when you'd had some recent practice on a virtually identical craft. He set the vestment upon the countertop, an offering to his new customer.
"Whatever it is you have planned, take care of yourself. And him."

[F1 - R10 Tailor] The Crusty Bahrnacle
in Merchants and Shops
Posted · Edited by Bahr
As the boy left, another youth entered the shop and made herself known. Seemed she was looking for some sort of item fusion. Luckily, Bahr had had some practice with regards to fusion thanks to that asshole Oz always coming around and demanding freebies. He inspected the pieces she'd lain out for him, and eyed her as she went to inspect the rest of the store's wares. She'd found the dresses, it seemed.
The garments she'd selected were both fine specimens in their own right. Identical in every way but name and description. The desired direction she was going with it, in the end, was obvious, and Bahr couldn't much say he disagreed. If this had been her idea, she had a good eye.
Combining them was refreshingly simple and he had the completed work ready within only a few moments. "Got this ready for you," he called as the newly minted wrist cuff made its way onto the counter for inspection. "Let me know if this will work."
Combining the following:
saint-germain | [#233633] | TIERLESS CLOTH ARMOR | LD | RISKY | VAMP-D
[desc.]: a silk wrist cuff upon which a corsage of pure white roses is pinned.
satin. | [#233639d] | TIERLESS CLOTH ARMOR | LD | RISKY | VAMP-D
[desc.]: a sheet of fabric that catches the light. incredibly glossy.
into -> [+1 demonic shard, +1 gleaming scale.] [sent to banker as iris.] [she may have overpaid?? i believe she sent 2 gleaming scales when only one should have been required]
saint-germain | [#234698] | TIERLESS CLOTH ARMOR | RISKY II | VAMP-D II
[desc.]: a silk wrist cuff upon which a corsage of pure white roses is pinned.
