  2. The neat thing about having apparently made a shop with one's name in it was that, if that individual happened to lose all of their memories, it would make finding a place they could find their own a little easier. Having crashed on a couch in his office since finding this place, he'd never really been worried about basic things such as locking up, or even tending to the business he knew absolutely nothing about. In his mind, he was more or less squatting in someone else's place.

But as he lazily walked up to the front counter and noticed the order form, he felt an itch. Something he couldn't quite describe. Something he knew. Tailoring was something he'd noticed in his skill tree, and by all means this seemed to be a clothing shop. But could he actually stitch together something like these requests detailed? There was only one way to find out.

To his surprise, the very first attempt was an immaculate success. The second suit took a few tries, but ultimately turned out alright with little to no effort. Seemed like he had a knack for this sort of thing after all. Was it something that could be profitable?

Who knew. But after fumbling a bit with the messaging panel, he was inevitably able to shoot a message to the patron, letting him know his commission was ready.

Sunken within himself, submerged beneath the tumultuous ferocity of his own subconscious, Bahr had lost touch with any perception of reality - real or virtual. Shapes and hues, sounds and scents, the steady march of time, even physical touch was beyond his perception. He was similarly hollowed of conscious thought in this senseless state, drifting endlessly in a state devoid of ego or separation between 'him' and 'the other.' Just as a rock didn't know it was a rock, and a tree didn't know it was a tree, Bahr didn't know who or what he was. Just another bundle of rendered particles, intermixing with other particles, each individually making up the macro scale of the environment within which he resided. There was no telling how long he had been here like this. He hadn't given it much thought. Couldn't have given it any thought. But as time took its toll, and the days turned to weeks, and the weeks to months, even this mindless husk would begin to feel disturbed by the true nature of its reality.

Snippets of consciousness gradually slipped from the aether back into the Zeitgeist. It started with sound. Horrific, stomach-churning noises. Scratching. Gnawing. Scuttling. The rapping of exoskeleton appendages against some sort of solid surface. He could hear them. Whatever they were. Moving, hissing, feasting. On what, he had no idea. Even still, without the use of his other faculties, the grim nature of the situation didn't dawn upon him by sound alone.

Next came smell. A grotesque amalgamation of the most vile and putrid odors known to man. As unrelenting as it was thick and pervasive, seemingly permeating his every pore and soaking into his very being. It would be nauseating, if he knew what that meant. Unpleasant, though, he could understand by now. Taste came along shortly thereafter, only intensifying the discomfort brought upon him by his returning sense of smell. Now, not only could he smell the horror of his environment, he could taste it.

Later on, sight returned. Though, he didn't notice so at first. There was admittedly a difference between seeing darkness and seeing nothing at all, but that difference was difficult to discern in his current state of mind. Blackness surrounded him, preventing him from examining the creatures he was certain surrounded him. To make matters worse, there was no variety of perspective to behold. His eyes seemed affixed in one position, lazily opened, peering directly forward into the shadows. Not that he had the wherewithall to adjust his view, anyway. He hadn't the slightest inkling that his eyes were the reason that he could see, or that he even had eyes. Only that he could see.

Weeks into this gradual revival, the sensation of touch suddenly scorched from his core outward, lighting his nerves ablaze and imposing their jarring influence upon his psyche. The shock was enough to awaken his mind, snapping him from whatever trance-like state he'd found himself in before. All at once, the senses clicked together into a single, coherent system, and the being that was Bahr was officially reborn. He felt them crawling on him; the nameless, faceless creatures that had haunted his other senses for what felt like eons. Their insidious influence was all that he knew, and while before he'd been remarkably indifferent toward them, his newfound consciousness made way for a single, passionate emotion.

    Raw, unbridled fear.

Where in the fuck was he? What were these things? And why was it that he still couldn't move? Not so much as a flicker of the eyes, or the slight curl of a finger could be managed. Despite all senses having returned, he still found himself utterly and completely paralyzed. Was he even sure that he could move, if he wanted to? Had he ever moved before? How did he know he wasn't just another rock, or tree, or inanimate object? Maybe his existence was some freak accident, a glitch of nature which gave rise to the horrifying reality he now suffered. He didn't even know what he was. Would he be forced to endure this for all eternity?

Only trusting his instincts would help. Slowly, the cacophony of voices that filled his mind made way for a single one. The one that felt the most familiar. The one that felt most like 'him.' How can I even be sure that this is me? he wondered, stopping himself almost immediately afterward at the absurdity of his own inquiry. Instincts. Right... So, what was it that his instincts were telling him to do?

    On my authority...

    ...

    Forgotten King's Authority activated.

In a blinding flash, Bahr's entire body lit up, illuminating the cavernous space he'd spent untold lengths of time hidden within. Likewise, the creatures he'd come to know as the only other living beings in existence were revealed through the dazzling burst of light, hissing as they receded from the harsh disruption to their natural habitat. Hideous, multi-legged creatures with no faces, and no other defining characteristics. Rotten to the core, unsettling in every possible way. Blights upon reality. Monsters that needed to be exterminated.

Whatever that light had been, it made him mobile. Though stiff, he was eventually able to sit up, and then even stand, though his shaky legs and even shakier equilibrium threatened to seat him once again at any given moment. As he struggled to his feet, he could hear the monsters scuttling about him. Encroaching, hissing, threatening. He could feel their malice crawling up his spine. Instinctively, he reached for his blade, its sheath sliding with a familiar shwing as it loosed its deadly weapon from its clutches.

Feels light, he caught himself thinking, without really even knowing what that meant, or what he was comparing it to.

On pure reaction, Bahr swung the blade in a wide arc in front of him, the metal combusting and catching ablaze as it divided the air it cut through. The brief light once again spurred the angered beasts into instinctively receding from him, hissing menacingly as they dipped back into the shadows beyond the flame's influence. There were too many of them. Even the freshly born Bahr could see that. And while his instincts told him to escape at any cost, he couldn't discern an exit strategy from what little he'd seen of the cave so far. He swung the sword again, and again, each small blaze illuminating the space and pushing the blackness back a bit further.

While he couldn't make out an exit, what he did notice was the creatures were less and less dissuaded from approaching with each ignition of the blade. They encircled him from all sides, each brief interlude of light revealing their position to be closer and closer to his. Backed into an unfamiliar corner with 'fight' or 'die' being seemingly his only two options, he instinctively sprang for the former. He lunged forward, blade vibrating with crimson intensity as a high-pitched whine pierced through the noise of the monsters' relentless hissing. In a wide arc, the weapon tore through a collection of the hapless vermin like a hot knife through butter. He would see the creatures reel back and pause, their silhouettes adopting an azure glow before bursting into clouds of crystalline mist.

Faster than Bahr's brain could make sense of what it was witnessing, he felt his body pivot and let loose another strike at the mobs who had lunged toward his back after his previous attack. The blade adopted the same glow, emitted the same high-pitched whine, and dispatched the airborne collection of foes in much the same manner as the first. And as their bodies disintegrated, Bahr's didn't stop. Through pure instinct and panic alone, he loosed an incredible volley of strikes at a pace that surprised even himself, countless of the insect-like creature's bursting into azure dust with each slice of his greedy blade.

Eventually, the onslaught started to become too much for him, and he knew it was only a matter of time before he couldn't keep up any longer. There was a seemingly limitless supply of the monsters that assaulted him, with no clear end to their rage in sight. As an evasive measure, he leapt backward, over a mob that had lunged at him from behind, grabbing the creature by one of its appendages and slamming it into a nearby wall. It dissolved, same as the others before it, but not before knocking loose a rock that clattered from the roof of the cavern, down the slope of rubble from whence it came, before resting on the floor.

Through the cavity left in its absence, light shone through. I small, solitary pillar of illumination. But enough to show Bahr that there was indeed a way out. And, more importantly, shed light upon his adversaries without needing to spark the air with the use of his sword. He dove headlong back into the horde, this time focusing on turning the beasts into kinetic weapons as opposed to simply dicing them up, grabbing and hurtling as many of them toward the same wall as before. With his remaining time to avoid certain death still evaporating, and the light-exposing cavity ever widening as more and more rocks tumbled from its maw, Bahr seized his opportunity. A full on body check into the wall, with enough inertia to break through and emerge into whatever lie beyond.

Had he the time to marvel at the exquisite wonder that awaited him outside the confines of his prison, he most certainly would have. Lush, rolling fields. Endless azure sky. Fluffy white and goldenrod clouds that filled the expanse. Vegetation. Fauna. Space. Everything he had no idea even existed, yet felt like home anyhow. And as the fresh air filled his nostrils, and the cool breeze washed over his frame, for an instant he nearly forgot about the harrowing experience he'd just escaped.

Only, he hadn't escaped. While it was true he'd been freed from the cavern, so too had his pursuers, who even as the realization dawned on him were scuttling out of the hole like a colony of ants ready to protect their hill. Without a second thought, Bahr swung the blade at the stone directly above the entrance, aiming to free more rock to fill the cavity and lock them inside. But rather than sink its teeth into the material and cut it loose, it simply bounced back with a harsh twang that reverberated through his core, and a populated sign that heralded the stone's immortal status.

Then how in the hell did the cave-in happen in the first place!? he chided internally, redirecting his ire to the first wave of monsters that had emerged from the cave and dispatching them with a swipe of his blade. Now able to clearly see them in the plain daylight, Bahr was free to pursue more direct avenues of aggression, such as running straight up to and punting one of the creatures back toward the wall. Miraculously, as it made contact, it loosed some of the rocks from above and collapsed the cavity that had been created, crushing any scuttlers that were attempting to escape their prison before them could break free. A few stragglers remained, but were cleaned up quickly, Spite ripping through them in a matter of seconds now that their brethren were locked away and unable to support them.

When it was all finally over, he collapsed backward into the lush grass, his sword falling to the wayside as he let its hilt slip from his grasp. He heaved heavy breaths, half of relief, half of residual terror. And as the calm finally sank in, he found his mind returning to the questions he'd neglected to answer, or even ask, since he'd woken up. Who was he? What was he? Try as he might, he couldn't rationalize any of it. The only memories he had were of his senses returning one by one, that cave, those horrible monsters, and his escape. Nothing else existed.

Your location data is now visible to other Players.

The sign populated out of nowhere, prompting a flinch from Bahr, who swiftly sat up and swatted the menu away before he'd fully read it. Now in an upright position, he allowed his eyes to drift to his body. His feet, legs, torso, arms and hands. Fingers. Fingernails. Immaculate detail he was unaware existed until that very moment. Though, none of it looked familiar. And as those eyes drifted over the fields, he could see others in the distance who shared these features. Arms, legs, hands. Heads, which he hadn't seen yet. Bodies, just like his. Which meant, he must have had a head, too. Why couldn't he see it?

He shook his head, leaning back into the grass and rubbing his temples. Just... what in the hell had happened?

  4. Nary a word submitted as the man casually strolled into the shop, his empty eyes exhibiting every bit the hollowness he himself felt throughout every nerve and pore of his body. With likewise silence, he submitted the tools to the shopkeep, eyes not lifting from their dreary gaze to meet with the man whose services he requested. One blade, another, a shard, and a scale. After forwarding the materials, he took a single step back, patiently awaiting the end result of the blacksmith's labor. All the while, eyes remained perfectly affixed forward, slightly downward, in a perpetual, almost hypnotic state. Any attempts at communication were either ignored or otherwise imperceptible to the man as he awaited the final product.

  5. "I guess that's something to be thankful for. Any boss fight where everyone makes it out alive is a good one."

Which was true. And yet, somehow, it made him feel even more foolish. Here he was, lamenting in his poor performance, when the fact that they had cleared the floor at all, and with zero fatalities, no less, should have been cause for celebration. They should have been joining hands with the rest of the Players in the Town of Beginnings, giving thanks to Cardinal for its ever-fortuitous mercy, that everyone was alive. That they hadn't all just been swallowed whole by an unexplainable amalgam no more than a quarter of the way through the castle. He should have wanted to, as well. Instead, he was making it about him.

So much growth, he'd undergone. But, in many ways, he was still the child he'd been upon entering this place.

"But I can understand the frustration, too. I'm so sorry. You really busted ass to get ready for this fight, so to have it not play out like you hoped... We'll just have to shift our focus to the next boss, and keep working hard. The next one will be better. I'll be there with you to make sure of it."

The platitudes. He appreciated them, but knew they only escaped her lips for his sake. Surely the absurdity of his chagrin was not lost on her.

Silently, he followed her along to the couch, trying his best not to look like a pouting brat as he sat beside her. And try as he might, he couldn't hold his expression back from souring as she explained what she and the others had experienced on the seventh floor. The cause was twofold; first, he was completely appalled by what they had been forced to endure; second, he felt even more foolish than he had only minutes before. Everyone died. Yet, miraculously, here they all were. Unscathed. Physically, anyways. It made his embarrassment over his performance in the raid all the more trivial and laughable. And as he grappled with this realization, so too did he grapple with the fact that, even as he sat there feeling like an idiot for having made it about himself, he was still making it about himself.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Seconds of silence culminated into what felt like minutes in swift order. The window of time within which a response wouldn't seem awkward had long since passed, which become more evident as Lessa's expression slowly contorted into one of confusion - which he assumed was spurred from his lack of response. He suddenly felt so tired. Of all of it. As though the reality of their situation was finally settling it. The prison they found themselves in had been gnawing at their sanity for years, and it was now that Bahr truly began to experience that ever deepening sink-hole in his brain where logic and reason should have been.

It was as though he was going mad. A different 'madness' than the kind he had grown accustomed to. It wasn't the sort of blind, raging fury that had carried him through so many of his fights. That was a simple, clean, and understandable madness. A defense mechanism, almost - the sort that gave him the gas he needed to make it through to the other end of a typically fatal scenario. What he felt now was more complicated. More unnerving. Like nothing was right, and that it hadn't been for a long time. And that, upon realizing this, he wondered how it was possible that now, upon the veneer evaporating, and the truth of their situation being laid bare for him to witness with no obstruction, that he felt that he was going mad. Wouldn't he have had to have been mad before, to have normalized and accepted this existence? To have even liked it, and tried to convince his love that she should, too? Why was it that now, as he felt himself spiraling, and the world was almost certainly spinning, and everything that had been right had turned wrong, and everything that had been wrong seemed right, he felt as though he'd gone insane?

He couldn't respond to her. He couldn't even keep his thoughts straight. What she and the others had been through was outright horrifying, and deserved at least some sort of response. But instead he sat silent, eyes boring seemingly straight into hers, slightly widened, as he felt his heart bursting in his ears, and his breathing run ragged. Unable to speak, he placed a hand on her thigh near the knee in an attempt to console her at least somewhat. But rather than a light grip, his fingers squeezed into her flesh in an almost frantic, frenzy-like manner. In a hasty overcorrection, he released his grasp, hand freezing in the air, slightly shaking. Now he didn't know what to do with it, and that realization somehow exacerbated the incredible discomfort he now felt wriggling its way through his entire body. Everything tingled, and itched, and burned, and he wasn't getting enough air, and his hand wouldn't quit shaking, and he was still just staring directly into her eyes.

And then, suddenly, with a couple of blinks of his mismatched eyes, all of it subsided.

His hands found both of her shoulders, gently this time, and held them as though to ground her. Though, it was probably he himself who needed to be grounded more than anyone. "I'm not okay," he finally admitted, still unable to comprehend whatever the hell it was he'd just been through. "I don't think any of us are."

It was somewhat unusual for him to present himself as so vulnerable - though, he supposed Lessa had seen him in similar such states before. Hell, they'd met while he'd been having a meltdown. But this felt different. An admission of a long-kept secret, the truth of which he'd hidden even from himself. The ultimate revelation. He had always wanted to be rock for her, or at the very least a positive influence on her life. But now, he felt helpless. Everything was wrong. Lessa - Alyssa, may have been the only thing that was right.

"I wish you hadn't needed to go through any of that. It's a miracle you're here. Or any of us are. I'm... honestly just grateful you're okay."

There was no way she wouldn't have noticed what had just happened, but he had a hope that, at the very least, she could overlook or ignore it for now. The last thing he wanted in that moment was to be the center of attention. What had happened with the raid wasn't about him. What had happened to Lessa and the others on Floor 7 wasn't about him. None of it was. And he didn't deserve a sliver of special treatment regarding any of it. He'd only sucked in a fight. She had literally died. There was no room in a conversation like this for him to be losing it like this.

"What should we do with a second chance like this?" he questioned quietly, hastily, trying to shift the attention and the scope of the conversation to something else. Something external. "If you could do anything today, what would it be?"

  6. "Uh, hey. Would you mind if we went inside? We could grab something warm to drink or something. Because it's kind of chilly out here, and, I'm, uh, not wearing actual pants."

As though on cue, Bahr's mismatched eyes flickered down to her exposed appendages, where they lingered a tad longer than most would consider polite. Whether clothed or not, he couldn't help but appreciate her features. Though, once he'd found the good sense to actually respond, he did so with but a short nod and an awkward, affirming grunt of some sort. My, how articulate he'd been this entire encounter.

He followed those slender snacks as they led him through the foyer of Manderly, his eyes only leaving them when he missed the doorknob twice in his attempts to close the door. And no sooner had he found success than she started up again.

"It does feel wrong. And fuzzy, and confusing. I guess we both have a lot of catching up to do. And with this update..."

    Right. The update.

Bahr could feel the color draining from his visage as Lessa reminded him of that wretched screen and its incessant intrusion earlier that morning. In his haste, he'd fumbled through the menus like an unwelcome fever dream. He was certain he'd tapped on the wrong options more than once, but he hadn't cared at the time. Lessa was his priority. But as the anxiety of her death waned in her presence, a new anxiety took its place. In just what ways had he royally screwed his build? It could be weeks before he were ready to attempt fighting monsters or exploring the new floor in earnest.

"First thing's first. Since you're here, can I assume you guys beat the boss?"

It was the first thing she'd said that had actually registered with him since she mentioned the update, and even then, it wasn't until a few seconds after the inquiry was issued that any semblance of recognition graced his features.

"Ah- right, that. Yes. I mean- I think so." Instinctively, he reached one of his gloved hands back and ran it through his snow-white hair, still damp and slick from his endeavor to reach her. "Like I said, it's all still sort of hazy. I distinctly remember most of the fight, but it's hard to recall how it ended, or how I ended up back at home." And as he scrambled to mentally assemble the pieces of that encounter, which somehow felt like a distant memory as opposed to something that had basically happened literally an hour prior, he felt the features of his face gradually becoming harder. "God, I sucked, Alyssa. I mean really sucked. I looked like a total amateur out there. I kicked my own ass for months to be prepared for something like that and totally bombed it."

Eventually, he recalled enough that he could answer more confidently.

"Yeah, we beat it," he concluded, though in a deflated tone. "As far as I remember, zero Player fatalities. Everyone did their best and we made it out alive. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if most of us are licking the wounds to our psyche and ego."

  7. He would be lying if he said that the message hadn't given him pause. While he'd been rather candid about his victory over the Forgotten Time King, he was certain he hadn't shared many of the more uncomfortable aspects of that experience with Lessa. He'd won, but there'd been a cost associated with it. A psychological toll that he'd hardly had the time to process, let alone share with anyone else to a meaningful degree.

But if she was going, it necessitated his attendance as well. What they were to face was a powerful enemy, and he couldn't bear the thought of letting her go it alone. Which was a sentiment he recognized as selfish and hypocritical, even as he thought it. What would she have done had he disappeared one day because he went in half-cocked against a boss that was clearly capable of smiting him in one fell swoop? Now faced with the potential reality of being on the receiving end of such torment, he could hardly bare the thought.

When he arrived upon the venue, Lessa was nowhere to be seen. Had he beaten her there, or had she already gone ahead? He summoned his messaging panel.

  14. If Daemien's mobile shop was Aincrad's best example of minimalism, Cintamani was the opposite. Bahr had taken notice of its arrival when he started catching alluring whiffs of freshly brewed coffee on his way to the Crusty Bahrnacle. More than once he'd found himself wanting to take a look around inside, but never really felt like he'd had the time. Today, he'd resolved to leave his residence extra early, just so he could afford to swing by and grab a brew on the way to work.

And boy, was he happy that he had.

In some ways, the shop reminded him of his own. Rich colors, quality handcrafted woodworks, a splash of personal flavor here and there, all wrapped together with soft lighting that cemented a soothing and relaxing ambiance. Though the glass doors and windows offered more natural light than Bahr's shop, there was still a similarity in which it filled the room. And, truth be told, the view from here was better than in the slums.

The host sat behind the counter with a coffee in hand, idly flipping through a selection of papers that were strewn across the counter. Either she didn't notice as he approached, or didn't care to acknowledge him.

"Hi there. Lovely place you've got here. Would you mind getting a quick order together for a man on a schedule?"

  15. It was... a campfire.

Just a campfire. Not a giant to-do like Bahr had become so accustomed to with next door neighbor's shop. But as he and Oscar weren't seeing eye to eye at the moment, Bahr saw it fit to search for his meals elsewhere. It just so happened that he found just such a place, albeit on accident, off the beaten path and hidden away in a busty thicket. It was the smoke that had made him curious, the smell that had beckoned him closer, and finally the revealed arrangement beyond the row of bushes that left him gaping in awe that the surprisingly mobile business the young man had set up for himself.

And while Bahr was impressed with the operation, he was more impressed with the food.

"Uh... Hey. I'd like to buy some food, if that's alright." He paused, sheepishly forwarded some cash, then added, "... this is a shop, right?"

  17. After walking for what felt like forever, Bahr found himself back at the entrance to the dungeon. As he peered up those steps to the gleaming light that sat at the top, he pondered staying within its cool depths for a bit longer. But, in the end, he was tired. Not because it had been a particularly exhausting day, just because... this place seemed to have that sort of effect. It kept him on edge. Tense, pensive, on high alert. And while that was, at one point, a feeling that he cherished, he no longer did. He just wanted to relax.

At whatever rate, he'd managed to score a nice treasure for the day. It was probably best to quit while he was ahead and cash in. So, he started the first of a long line of steps to the top of the staircase, and to the light that lay beyond. He was done for the day.

  18. It wasn't the fact that other Players had had access to this sort of thing and he hadn't. Well, that was at least a part of it. There certainly was an aspect of jealousy to the whole thing, if he was being truly honest with himself. But more than that, Bahr wondered how many Players had met their end when they might not have needed to. How many deaths could have been prevented by access to this sort of item? Countless, he was sure. Not everyone in Aincrad was blessed with the sort of kit that Bahr had. There were tons of Players - even on the Frontlines - who were running around with Perfect gear and no Unique Enhancements. The thought sent a shiver up Bahr's spine, because he knew how difficult that could be. And now, knowing what he knew, he also knew that it didn't need to be that difficult for them.

  19. It was something called a Demonic Shard. The system promised that, apparently, one could collect enough to upgrade an item from Perfect quality to Demonic. He'd just found a priceless treasure.

"All of that time I spent grinding events to assemble my gear, and a way to grind it out was sitting right under our noses the whole time."

He was excited and annoyed all at the same time. On the one hand, this meant he had the potential to really control his build now. On the other hand, it meant that he probably did have such a capability all the while, and had simply failed to investigate it thoroughly enough. That, or the information had never been made public. His mind traced back to his earlier thoughts about Players who had known of the Black Iron Dungeon prior to its existence being made readily available to the public, and his heart sank. There was a chance that other Players had been keeping this to themselves the entire time.

  20. He picked up the small ornament and inspected it, taking note of the subtleties in its shape and coloration. It was violet in color, crossed with streaks of corruption; like an amethyst left to rot. He turned it over in his fingers and tested its shiny surface against whatever little light existed in the dungeon. From what he could tell, there was nothing out of the ordinary about it. Just a rock in a chest, as though it was supposed to mean something. But just because his eyes couldn't deduce the true value of the object didn't mean the system couldn't provide more enlightening insight. A tap against the object populated a window with more information, such as the item's name, weight, description, and use. After a moment, an audible 'wow' filled the chamber.

"You've got to be kidding me." It was all he could think to say. Had something like this always existed in Aincrad, and he simply hadn't known about it?
