[PP-NK-F11] <<Earning a Living>> (Hirru) Exterminate!

Recommended Posts

Turning the corner after their lucky break, Baldur found that they had encountered another room full of the ants. It seemed that while this was a beginner dungeon, perhaps that meant that their loot chances were just elevated while they were in there. Whatever the reason for their windfall, Baldur hoped that they could do the same again. However, these <<SergeAnt>> seemed to be drinking from a small underground stream that cut through the ant hive tunnel. Whatever the cause, they were distracted and he could attack from behind and gain the upper hand. He glanced at Hirru and made sure that the scout would follow behind him. If they both went in together, there was a chance they could kill them all before they had a chance to retaliate.

"Here we go!" Baldur whispered as he crouched down into his signature <<charge>> pre-motion, and with an explosion of color, the blue and orange gaijin samurai streaked away and flew into the A.o.E. sword art known as <<Amatsu no Homura>>. The slashes were deadly and instantly put the ant monsters in the red. Hopefully @Hirru was right on his coat tails.

The hunter would be right behind the samurai yet again.  This time around, the room didn't really have a boss, or one that he could see.  Reveal wasn't able to see anything that has a higher hiding ability than the Reveal user, and the hunter's was only just getting through the midway point.  The room did have a multitude of ants that seemed to be rejuvenating themselves over a fresh stream.  The samurai would deal a fresh amount of damage to them, but when the hunter would ready himself, one of the ants would trip him up.  This caused the hunter to fall into the stream, where the ants were drinking from.

"Damn!"

While getting up from the stream, the hunter would notice that the contents of his pouch was slightly lighter.  Looking down, he saw that one of his steaks was floating away.  The hunter took a quick dive for it, catching it with his mouth, and biting into the cooked meat.  It wasn't how he wanted to waste time, but it would give him more boosts.

Baldur was a little annoyed when he saw Hirru go diving into the water. Not so much at the Jade Hunter, but more at the interruption of their perfectly efficient farming system they had going on for a moment. As long as they both hit, they could go through a small army of these things without being bothered.

However, Hirru would need a bit longer to get to his feet, and meanwhile, the ants had turned their wrath on Baldur, surrounding him on the banks of the underground stream. He didn't want to leave Hirru open in case one of them decided to leave him, so Baldur interjected himself between the other player and the ants. Dodging as many of the attacks as he could, and deflecting as many of the blows, he just had to rely on his armor to absorb as much as he could. The individual blows weren't much to worry about, but when the numbers began to add up, they could begin to become overwhelming.

Still, that's what healing items were for. He would really need to invest in Battle-Healing after this.

Once the his sword art had come off cooldown, Baldur launched into a counter attack, the cursed blade making quick work of the four ants that had wounded him.

<<The Muramasa>> would not let their attacks go unanswered, and a moment later Baldur stood alone in a shower of rainbow colored polygons.

The loot window made his eyebrows climb his forehead.

"Well, it seems we found the right place to go."

The hunter watched as the light of four more ants were extinguished and dashed to.. wherever the light shards go.  It was one of the few things that the hunter wanted to know about, nearly more than his own memories.  Though, the pursuit of memories had been put on hold, for the most part.  For reasons unknown to him, they seemed to come more often when things were most dire.  He didn't want to put himself, or anyone else, in that kind of danger.

Looking upon the loot screen that would pop up, the hunter would have to agree with the samurai.  This area seemed to be rich in loot, no matter whom killed the enemy.  Though, it was probably better if they kept their current strategy, as it was the best one they had going, so far.

"Still got some energy left?  I don't think we came here without alerting something."

The hunter pointed out as several pings would come to him from the connecting tunnels.

This new wave of ants that came running around the corner seemed a little tougher... or at least looked that way. It also seemed to Baldur that they may have drawn too much attention. Whatever the reason, this new group of ants was charging at them. Quickly crouching down, Baldur tried to buy time for Hirru to get some space and get ready for his own assault. Activating his <<charge>> skill, the blue and orange samurai became a blur as he suddenly appeared among the ants, his sword art becoming a flurry of crimson arcs of light as his <<Amatsu No Homura>> sword art cleaved through four of the ants. It wasn't enough for him to kill them, but it was close enough that Hirru should be able to finish them off if he could hit them.

"Come on, ants! Show me the money!"

Baldur tried to taunt them in a light hearted manner, as if trying to obscure the fact that they had just kicked the ant hill, and were quite a way underground. They always had crystals to teleport out should anything bad happen, but it didn't help with that little hint of claustrophobia that some players may feel in small underground tunnels.

They were safe for now, and they were not in any danger. They had managed to kill quite a few of these ants, and Baldur's HP was still at full, even while the ants began to counter-attack him now that he was in the midst of them, but in the water of the stream, they were also slowed down. He was able to push through and keep the four of them in front of him so that it was easier to dodge and parry their blows while he remained on the solid ground of the bank.

"Let's do this, @Hirru!"

As he had seen from his Reveal, the ants had approached from the tunnels that connected the room to the rest of the colony.  It wouldn't be long until they were surrounded by them, but their teamwork was making them work for that advantage.  For nearly every attack the samurai was forwarding, the hunter would be closely behind to land the finishing blows.  They could do this for a couple more waves, but only just.  The hunter's energy was already past halfway, and Baldur's would be even lower.

The hunter took his time to watch his footing, and let loose with a torrent of slashes and strikes.  By the end, more of the enemies were slain, and their loot would be presented to them.  This time it didn't seem like there was much to be had.  Maybe, their streak was fading out?  It didn't matter, in the end, as there were more to come.

"Plenty of Cor, if anything."

The giant ants that came pouring out of the tunnels after them next were larger than the ones they had just fought. Once again, Baldur interposed himself between the deadly insects and Hirru. Baldur had been the one to take buffs, and Hirru was currently set up as their finisher, trying to get them the best loot that they could meant that he sacrificed other stats. Rushing up to them to make he aggroed them by being the first one into their radius, Baldur then took a running leap across the small underground stream. The ants bunched up as they tried to cross it, slowed down temporarily by the water, and Baldur used the chance to unleash his <<Amatsu No Homura>> sword art, the blade spinning with a furious crimson arc of light following his blade. It was a solid critical hit and Baldur saw his attacks drop their HP into the read, but even his charge and crit combo wasn't enough to drop these. With his energy so low, however, he would need to rely on Hirru to do his part.

"Hirru! Finish them off!"

As the four large ants bore down on Baldur, he raised his blade to defend himself from the pincers and claws of the monsters. If Hirru missed, Baldur would be unable to AoE again, so he would have to decide between regenning his energy, or finishing them off one at a time. Though with their damage, that might not be much of a choice. It was up to @Hirru now.

Some things never change.

With another group of mobs coming in, they went into their attack combo to exploit surprise attack advantages.  Unfortunately, the hunter would be snagged by another of the ants.  It wouldn't be so bad, if he wasn't in mid sword art when it happened.  The acceleration and momentum sent the hunter sailing past Baldur and the ants, and into one of the tunnels that the ants had burrowed from.  His sword art would throw him against the dirt wall which rumbled with dirt falling from the ceiling, but nothing that would make a total cave in.

From the hunter's side, he could see that the dirt and rocks that barred his way would be easily moved out of the way, but would take some time.  However, there was a fair sized hole to work around with, but would still take time away from fighting to get out of it.  @Baldur would have to persist for a bit.  It was then that the hunter remembered that he had items for such an occasion.  He took a small bottle from within his pouch and tossed it out the hole.

"Baldur!  Energy drink!  Use it!"

The ants made their counter attack, and while Baldur was a slippery target, their sheer numbers and number of limbs caught up with him. Baldur tried to dance between their blows, spinning and ducking and parrying them aside with his katana but he couldn't watch all of his sides at the same time, and before he knew it he felt jabs begin to strike his body. He spun to try and get some distance from that <<LootenAnt>> but doing so cause him to turn his back on another. He would need to thin them out or they would keep him cornered and he would begin to take more and more damage. He had a lot of mitigation to absorb the ants' blows, but it was more the number of them combined with the little bit of damage which got through that began to add up. He watched his HP drop, and Hirru threw an energy drink at him. While it was in the air, Baldur activated <<Wa Shu>> and cut down one of the ants, rushing through the hole it created in their formation and holding his left hand up high to catch the drink.

"Thanks!" This would help as soon as he could find an opening to drink it. In the mean-time he could take one or two more of these bastards down with him as he spun around to face them. Now that he could keep his back away from them and keep them all in front, he should be able to deal with the better. They could only flank him, not surround him anymore.

"Don't worry, we got this!"

The hunter began digging his way out of the dirt hole that he had gotten himself stuck in.  The dirt was slick with slime or something that the ants used to keep their tunnels from collapsing, without some sort of unknown force.  Like a human sized object forcefully slammed into the wall, making the area unstable, or something along those lines.  The hunter only knew that it was taking too long for him to get back into the fight, and it was beginning to show.  He was digging harder than before, but the slick mess would cause him to slip every so often.

In the mean time, the hunter watched from the ever increasing hole of the battle that he desperately wished to get back into.  Baldur was able to take out one of the ants, which lessened the damage that would accumulate from the hunter's misadventure.  Though, the hunter wanted it to never happen at all, which ticked him off that much more.

"I'll stop worrying when I'm out there, and they're dead!"

Now that Baldur could keep them all in front of him, it was much easier to manage. Relentlessly the ants continued to attack him, and he was able to jump aside and keep just enough distance to be out of range, only needing his blade to parry the occasional pincher. He spared a moment once he had cleared their blow to take the  <<Wasp Energy Drink>> that Hirru had thrown to him. He could have whittled them down by another number, but now that they were manageable it was as good a time as any.

"Thanks for the drink Hirru!"

He saw his energy bar rise up to a level which meant he could use his area of attack again, even though there were three of them almost dead. If Hirru could get free, then he could easily finish them off as well. The best he could do for now was keep the attention of the giant ants and keep them away from his friend.

"Quite tough little buggers, aren't they?"

@Hirru

The hunter was beginning to think that he wasn't going to get out of this hole, anytime soon.  Though, with the increasing amount of slick material that would come off the dirt, he found himself slipping even more.  Both physically and mentally.  He needed to get out of there before he snapped, which was beginning to slightly show on his face, even though it was covered in mud.

It didn't take long to actually get the hole big enough for him to fit through, but the tunnel was increasingly unstable.  With each second the dirt from above would fill in any spot that the hunter had dug out.  At some point, he was able to get his torso through, but the dirt fell in a large enough clump to leave him wedged in the hole.  As much as he tried to, he could not brute force his way out, if he wanted to.

"*sigh* I'll be there soon.."

He would say as his fingers dug into the dirt to find a singular topaz.

Baldur saw that his friend Hirru seemed to be losing his calm when it came to fighting his way free of the tunnel. These mobs could hurt him, but not to the point where Baldur's life would be immediately threatened if he took a moment to help his partner in crime out with. Waiting until the moment came, Baldur clashed blades with the ants and threw them back with a powerful blow and allowed the ricochet to push him back towards Hirru.

Boots stirring up more dirt as he skidded to a stop, Baldur held his Katana in one hand and offered the other to Hirru.

"Grab my hand, I'll pull you out of there! Also, grab that gemstone right there, it's probably a crafting material."

Before he could really grip Hirru's hands and pull him free, the Ants had caught up to him, and he felt his form become pierced by several of their mandibles as he health bar dropped even more. He was glad that he had taken that mitigation potion from Rain earlier.

"Came on, let's get you out of there so we can finish them off!"

The ever shifting dirt kept putting weight against him, which made it that much harder to get out on his own.  Thankfully, the hunter wasn't alone.  Baldur had come to help him out of this mess, even though he could easily take the enemy out now.  Maybe, it was better for the both of them to be in safety, or combat ready positions.  In any case, the samurai held out his hand, which the hunter took with his armored left hand.  He grabbed around the wrist for the most anchored grip, while using the sword in his other hand to wedge into the hole to widen it, as far as he could.

With their combined might, the two were able to pull the hunter out from his dirt coffin.  The momentum would be used in the hunter's advantage.  Almost immediately after, the hunter was bowling through the annoying ants that had troubled them for the past few minutes.  The sword art was long, but efficient; and, the ants were no more.

After the combo was over, the hunter fell back down onto his rear.

"Alright... that should be it... for now."

As Baldur had pulled Hirru free, the Jade Hunter took the opportunity that he was given and slew the remaining ants. He couldn't have been more efficient or flawless in his execution of the maneuver in spite of just being pulled out of a tunnel hole. A moment later the hunter took a seat and Baldur decided to sit down next to him as well, his armor not nearly as uncomfortable as it should have been in this situation, but perhaps that was the benefit to wearing light armor.

"Well done." He said with a smile as he pulled out another bottle of water. He rarely used these except on protracted dungeons. For some reason it just felt refreshing to drink the crisp, cool water. Perhaps it had to do with the mental association Baldur held to it and his days with sports.

"Those guys were much tougher than the others. Maybe we should find this dungeon boss and see if we can't find some mobs to fight with a bit more sky above us."

Baldur flashed the green haired player a smile and finished off the bottle of water, letting it shatter into multicolored pixels as he finished it.

"You okay? I can't imagine how freaked out I would be coming out from a hole like that." He shivered a bit. "But I'm glad it worked out already."

"I'm fine... I'm just a little.."

The hunter caught himself before taking a bottle of water from his own pouch.  He took a deep breath before starting to drink, delaying his response to give him more time to think.  Was he really alright?  He had not fought like that in a while, and that was only because of a slight mistake on his part.  He didn't know that the sword art would send him sailing.  He didn't know that the tunnel would cave in around him, but still fought to get out.  So, why is it that his hands now shook with uncertainty.

"..shaken up, is all.  Not from the cave in, but.. The fight would have been long over, if not for my blunder."

Looking over to the samurai, whom looked fairly well for someone who could hold their own for that long.  He had a few orange gashes that would stand out, but not many.  His health told the rest of the story.  Nearly a fourth of his health was gone from that one instant, or was it from all of the reoccurring attacks?  The hunter wasn't certain.

"I know you've been at it longer, and had the mitigation to handle them, so the thought was pointless.  However, for a bit there, I thought I was going to lose someone..."

The hunter didn't continue, but on his mind, on his lips was the word 'again'.

"It's alright now.  So we should definitely take out the boss mob before it gets too hectic in here."

(2/3 round out of combat regen)

Baldur listened to his friend and comrade speak. Hirru was shaken up, but he couldn't tell if it was from the cave in or from how the battle went. They had dominated this dungeon until this last round, but that was the way things went from Baldur's experience. Thankfully, they were operating from a factor of safety that meant there was very little real danger. Had the fight gone worse than it had, Baldur had a healthy stash of healing crystals from his raiding that would over-correct the situation.

"It is easy to get caught up in the moment, but I was more worried about you than me. Should things turn bad, I've got several consumables that they'd have to chew through before we got into danger. Though that energy drink you had was a huge benefit. I might have to invest in some of those."

Leaning his head back against the dirt and rock of the cavern wall, Baldur closed his eyes so that he wouldn't have to keep looking at his health bar... but he UI did not disappear for that reason. He wasn't really closing his eyes, and the UI wasn't really there, so he could still see his Health Bar slowly ticking up in HP.

"I appreciate the concern though. It's nice to know our business relationship has become more of a friendship where I know we've got each others back."

He opened his eyes and turned his head to smile at Hikoru.

"You're a good man, Jan Hunter-San."

"Yeah, I guess it can get like that.  I haven't really be venturing into the higher floors, so I never realized how worked up I could get with these stronger mobs."

The hunter would say to agreeing with Baldur.  It wasn't every day that he would have problems, but that was only because of the lower leveled creatures that he hunted.  It had been some time since he had faced a quest, that he had not already completed.  The last time was when Opal was Vice.  That thought of her and the events that just transpired made the hunter remember something that gave him conflicting emotions.  Some would probably be shown in the strained grip of his unarmored hand to his pant leg, and his face would show signs of grief and anger.  These together would muddle the hunter's thoughts until he noticed that he got complimented by the samurai.

"Huh?  Oh, yeah.  Thanks.."

He replied in a less than appreciative tone.

"I guess, I get that from how this world made me."

"We are all..." Baldur grunted as he pushed himself back to his feet, "... products of the crucible which forged us." He smiled down at the green haired player. He had weathered this storm with Baldur, even though the gaijin samurai had meant for this to be a much quicker ordeal. Brushing dirt off his hands which wasn't there, his steel blue eyes surveyed the area around them before returning to the hunter.

"We are either refined and strengthened by the process, or broken and left to flit about in life until we can be repaired, or are ultimately cast aside."

He found the player's eyes for a moment.

"You are here, which means you have the strength to push forward and carry on. You take the hand that you were dealt and you have continued on. Not everyone can do that. It speaks of a deeper spiritual strength. I just hope that the smithy allows some of our character to shine through in the hamon of our blades"

Spinning slowly about, Baldur seemed distracted for a moment as he found his barrings.

"I think we were heading that way. The boss door should be just up ahead.

The hunter listened on as the samurai sounded more like a philosopher, which he has heard plenty of times before.  There are no shortage of them on the first floor.  If one hung around there for a while, them would hear them preaching their thoughts.  It's a wonder that the hunter ever goes back down to that floor.  Heck, he even started living in the wilderness for a long time after gaining his legs back.  It helped him gain a better understanding of the world; without the prying eyes and squandered opinions of others.  It is those people that wish to hold themselves behind hollow walls.  To be afraid of the outside world, before they could even see the truth.  Or was it the truth that scared them?

"I've gotta say.  I've never heard it quite like that."

When all is said and done, the hunter had taken the path that lead to the future.  He was carrying those people that wished to be left alone; the ones that want the nightmare to end; the ones that cry; and, the ones that fight.  That was what the front lines meant for him, and that was what drove him into the Blood Oath.

The hunter smirked before getting up.  His energy was back and all was calm now.  Well, sort of.  The lingering thoughts of the past are always haunting, but that was nothing new.  Brushing off the dirt and muck that had accumulated on him from the rest, the hunter looked over to his partner.  Giving a quick nod towards the direction of the bosses chambers, he would draw Oath.

"Alright, let's get some blood pumpin'!"
