[F08 | PP] The Bear Necessities <<Scents of the Wild: Ferocious Foe>>

Recommended Posts

The radiant city of Ellesmera was a sight to behold. It's elegantly crafted buildings that seemed to be as natural as the trees in the surrounding forest were always fun to explore. Katoka leaned against the railing of a bridge that crossed the river fed by the grand waterfall that the city was built up against. She was inspecting the tablet that her and Freyd had retrieved from their last quest, the one that lad then led them deep under Floor one and into the many arms of a monstrosity accidentally created by Cardinal.

A shiver creeped it's way down her spine as she thought about the creature. Thankfully she was in a gorgeous elven city now, surrounded by elves and players alike. Seeing the many long eared NPCs made her mind wander to Elora. It had been a while since they had ventured out on a quest together. They occasionally would meet up to have lunch or tea just to exchange idle chat and catch up, but otherwise that was all. She made a mental note to send her a message later to see if there was anything she wanted to do together.

Next she thought of Freyd. He had been making an effort to accompany Kat on these quests, and she had grown accustom to his company. One of these days though he wouldn't be there to take care of the scary boss, and that was something she was fine with. She just needed to remind herself that she couldn't get too comfortable, it would come back to bite her one day.

"I'll just have to catch up." she said to herself. "God that's going to take a lot of grinding though." she groaned as she slipped the tablet back into her inventory.

"You're damned right it will, slacker."  The words came from a young woman sitting on a nearby bench, casually scribbling notes in a small black notebook.  Easily dismissed as yet another casual visitor to the elves' woodland paradise, something about her tone was eerily familiar.  Books forcefully snapped shut and pencil tucked away into nothingness, the slender girl stood, wearing a green kemono commonly found among the mobs that wandered about Ellesmora on the regular.  Her shiny black hair was neatly wrapped in a tight bun held in place by a pair of onyx hair sticks.  Every part of her appearance was a deliberate blend of what fit in locally and a carefully manifured banality that could be easily overlooked.  "And when you finally do catch up," she added teasingly, "you'd better pay it forward to the next crop of kids clamoring up behind us."

The stranger's image shifted, like she'd suddenly fallen under the shadow of a cloud, though the overhead canopy had already taken care of that.  A certain feeling pressed on the mind, like having wandered into the uncanny valley while realizing you'd left your stove on at home, under a ladder with a black cat watching on.  She just grinned, spotting recognition at the oddity as her face melted into darkness swallowed by a cowl that engulfed her head from behind.  Light and colour drifted into black on black, until only a Whisper remained.

"Good to see you, Captain."  Freyd's voice now, playful in a Cheshire way.  "Looks like you followed the same instructions I did.  Can you spare a few minutes to help a fellow out?  I want to see if this bear is just as bugged as the last bit of content we explored."

"Well well well, you didn't tell me you were into drag Freyd." Kat smirked. She was initially very confused as to who the woman was that was speaking to her, but now it made a bit more sense. "I'm sure Elora would get a kick out of that, show her you can be an elf too."

She playfully elbowed him in the ribs as she walked past. His mention of the bugged content made her uneasy, but she felt more prepared this time now that they had a few consumables used. Katoka wondered how much more Cardinal had to hide behind closed doors. How many glitched areas and malfunctioning mobs there were that the system was trying to keep under wraps. "Let's find us a bear and see how deep this rabbit hole goes, shall we?"

As the two left the city and entered the forest the samurai thought more about what happened previously. "Do you think there are a lot more of these funky areas around? How hard do you think it is for the system to keep us from no clipping through the floor and into who knows where?"

"The ears are easy.  It's getting the voice right that's the real challenge," Freyd replied with a chuckle.  "Also, corsets are an absolute chafing nightmare.  Some of the other anatomy bits also took some getting used to."  Freyd stuck out his elbows and puffed up his chest, twisting his torso for added effect.  Satisfied that Katoka's imagination would run wild for a while on those snippets alone, the lanky man in black stuffed his spidery hands back in unseen pockets and wandered casually towards Ellesmora's outer gates.  At mention of Elora, he slowed his stride and turned to give the slightest of knowing smiles and glance from the periphery of his eyes.  'Sometimes less is more', he thought, saying not a word to explain the expression's source.

Travel through the woodlands surrounding the elven city was easy, at first, various trails having been blazed by frequent passage.  Some were created by the elves themselves, other by animals and mobs wandering through in the same regular pattern.  They were convenient, at least, easing the pace and friction of their passage with the foliage.  "Raidou and I fought this thing together, way back when.  Let me see if I can still pin it down..."

Crouching low to the ground, Freyd looked like some sort of creepy crawling thing as he sniffed around, looking as if he was searching for spoor or other traces of the beast.  In truth, he was really just putting on a show.  The tracking mod didn't work this way at  all, but it was fun to pretend it did just to mess with people.  Freyd's true motive was inspecting the digital environment at close range, looking for any discrepancies or breakdowns in the resolution of the images; looking for clues that the programming wasn't right.  "Can't say that I have any proof that there's anything wrong with the environment, but we can't suddenly have dozens or hundreds of players missing.  If there's anything out here, we should deal with it."

"I swear if you come across some kind of animal poop and taste it to find out what it came from I'm going to leave." Katoka laughed as she watched Freyd crawl around on the ground. She knew it was all for show but it was amusing nonetheless.

As the two made their way through the forest the trees seemed to grow thicker and taller, the forest here was definitely older and less travelled. Aside from the road itself you would have thought that there was no sign of civilization at all. Kat's hand drifted to her weapon, resting on the handle reflexively. Something was beginning to make her feel... Uneasy. The road lead to what looked like a large clearing, as if it was used to park a caravan of carts or travelers if need be. The trees had been cut back and the area was well maintained, or at least it had been for a time.

Nature was beginning to reclaim it's hold here, as if more time had passed without people visiting to tend to the campground. Katoka noticed Freyd had stopped here, checking what seemed to be large claw marks on a tree, as well as broken branches leading back into the woods.

"I take it this is the spot huh?" her tone amused. Freyd turned to her to say something but was cut off by an almost earth shaking roar. A split second later a bear larger than anything she had ever seen before burst forth from it's cover, nearly knocking Freyd over as it barreled past.

The samurai barely managed to draw her sword in time. Her sword art glowing a sky blue seemed to attract the bear to her, as if it was a beacon in the night. She stepped to the side as the beast continued it's forward momentum, not stopping even as she side stepped to let it run past her. Kat stabbed her blade into the side of the bear, letting her opponent's own momentum drag the weapon across it's body. The only thing that kept her weapon from flying from her grip was her solid footing and the back of her katana braced against her forearm.

Kumatetsu slid to a stop several feet behind Katoka and rose up on his hind legs, turning around to face the players. His health bar had dropped into the red and despite the long wound along his side, he looked as though nothing had phased him. "Uhhh, you're up Freyd!"

Chuckling lightly as Katoka joked about his investigation technique, Freyd's gaze scoured their surrounding for evidence of... weirdness.  Fortunately finding none, he regained his footing, stuffed his hands in a pair of random mystery pockets and nudged the shorter samurai in her ribs for a change.

"Nervous or cautious?" he asked as they entered the clearing, his fellow captain's hand reaching for her blade's hilt.  It was yet another sign that Katoka had come into her own.  He approved, and so set his focus on the clearing instead.  Tracking remained active and confirmed their foe's presence about a hundred yards away.  It must be watching us, he thought to himself as his finger traced the deep claw grooves on a nearby tree.  The instant words spilled into the glade Kumatetsu dashed forward and was upon them.  Freyd rolled, looking to the claw marks for inspiration and loosening the bindings of Samael's Pride on his left hand.  Katoka already had its number, he weapon slicing it up like a roast and leaving a deep groove along its left flank.  The bear roared, but its health bar clearly indicated its pending fate.  A keening wailing split the otherwise silent serenity of the forest as he lashed out the loosened ribbon of nothing.  A fallen proc.  Perfect.

Standing tall to intimidate the players with sheer size, the mob would have been terrifying once.

"Uhhh, you're up Freyd!"

Then the tree fell, crushing the bear beneath its redwood stature and popping in like a beleaguered pinata in a burst of fractal confetti.  A dozen feet behind it, a very contented Freyd leaned against the cleanly severed trunk, its topmost section still smoking and dribbling orange motes from his handwrap's passage while he bound the thing once more around his fingers.

"Got it, thanks."

Katoka blinked several times at the fallen tree that had crushed Kumatetsu. She turned to her friend and watched him wave at her, she continued to blink. "Wh--What the hell was that?! A tree?" she couldn't contain her laughter after than. Freyd had dropped a tree on a giant bear, crushing it like a looney tunes character. She was surprised there wasn't a bear shaped hole in the ground at that point.

"Well, that's that I suppose. I assume they will get harder as we go along?" she returned her katana to it's sheath and stepped around the tree. "I wonder if this clearing will get used again. It seems like it was at one point in time. Then again it might just be game design 101 and this area was made to look like this." Kat toed what had once been a fire pit, the old ashes and charcoal that remained having lost their initial color and now looking more like dirt. She had known that certain NPCs in the game had paths that they were programmed to take. Actions that they did in a constant loop day in and day out. Others had more complex routes, traveling over large distances and camping in spots along their routes. Generally they picked the same areas every time though, making their pathing just as predictable.

Then there were the unpredictable phenomenon that Cardinal would throw in. Quests and events that the system would write and change on it's own, causing the various NPCs to have their daily activates altered and changed. Could it have been Kumatetsu moving into this area and making it unsafe to camp in, or something else that had disrupted the forest's natural order. Katoka felt the hairs on her neck stand up, similar to how it had done back in the corrupted dungeon on Floor 1.

"Can you feel it?" she turned to Freyd, her hand audibly tightening on her weapon, "Something is... off. Wrong. I think another one of those broken things is nearby."

"Yeah.  Something is definitely..."

*SNAP*
*CRACKLE*
*POP*

Rice Crispies of Doom?  WTF?

The stump remaining from Freyd's improvised attack had failed to heal or cauterize as one might expect.  Instead, the lava-coloured top spewed forth spurts of intermittent digital goo that splattered and sizzled as it came into contact with the surrounding flora.

"Oh, that's probably not good."  Exchanging glances with his friend, Freyd felt the inevitable wave of nausea that seemed to follow passage into an instanced environment of a sub-dungeon.  "Yeah.  That's definitely not good."

All around them, various trees suddenly animated, their roots tearing from the ground and flailing with angry octopus vibes as barks and tree limbs splintered and pulled apart to reveal the same sickly amber-orange gunk within.  Faces tore themselves free at multiple points along their trunks, wailing in wrathful anguish.  It was like watching nature having a bad hair day, accentuated a thousand fold out of Cardinal-driven spite.

"Did we forget to get a parking pass or something?"  Staring at his feet, Freyd couldn't help but wonder whether he'd tripped a triggering blade of grass along the way.  Where was all this coming from?

Her sword was already drawn the second the trees in the forest began to move. Katoka felt herself tense up in response to the enemies that emerged from their originally rooted positions. Once the creatures came into view she tilted her head to the side a bit as she observed the tree mobs. They had what looked like multiple faces in the bark, as well in exposed spots where the bark had been tripped for crumbled off. The faces were what really got her attention. They looked like they were in agony, wailing and moaning in what looked like silence. It didn't take long for her eyes to be drawn to where the face's ears were showing. They were pointed, like an elf's.

"Freyd. Aren't the Elves in a constant war with the Treants here?" she asked, watching one particular face as orange began to leak from the corners of it's eyes. "I think we found another fucked up place."

The samurai shifted her stance, her form changing to a more wide and open bearing, her katana blade giving off an indigo light as she charged her sword art. She felt a revulsion to their presence, as well as a deep need to end their suffering. She knew that they weren't real living things, but that didn't mean they couldn't feel anything. She had witnessed more than once how real this world could be, and she couldn't take a chance that these things were any less real than her.

Changing forward Kat hit her first opponent in a downward slash, taking fluid steps between each of the monsters and striking them quickly. It looked as though she was cutting the air and dancing from one partner to the next. As the final slash stuck it's mark the Cerulean Storm took three bounding leaps and placed herself near Freyd. "Alright, you're up. I'm not good at multi-target hits."

Too lost in the potential implications of Katoka's statement and the revelation of yet more twisted mobs, Freyd reacted slowly.  Where his companion moved like liquid lightning, slicing and dicing the amalgam mobs into little tiny bitses, he just stood there wondering what could possibly trigger such effects.  Was it a code breakdown?  Could some sort of virus be at play?  There wasn't yet enough information to...

*SLAP*

One of the wealds slapped him across the face, snapping out of the daydream, though not with enough force to truly injure.

"Ah, crap.  Right.  Sorry.  I zoned out there for a minute."

Grabbing and snapping branches from the nearer treant-thing, Samael's Pride gleefully ripped it apart.  Freyd's hands passed through the mob like a hot knife through butter, repeating the work in less gruesome fashion on the next mob beside it.  Unfortunately, he'd lost too much momentum and left the balance standing.

"Kat, wrap these suckers up.  I get the feeling we'll have more to deal with before we get out of here."

"I'm not looking forward to what comes next, I can tell you that."

Kat once again readied the same sword art, this time only needing to dance between two opponents. She was not as skilled with her AoE arts, but she wanted to be damn sure she didn't miss. Closing the distance between her and the Wealds took no time, she was there in the blink of an eye between the two tree creatures. Her sword looked as though ti was gliding through the air in a figure eight motion as she followed through with her attack.

The two abominations jerked and spasmed  in response to her attack just before they burst into the all too familiar pieces of polygons. Katoka looked to Freyd as she let a small sigh of relief escape her lips, "Well, that's one encounter down." She knew not to let her guard down just yet, taking the time to scan her surroundings just in case something else popped up to surprise them both.

The Cerulean Samurai made quick work of the remaining mob, slicing them to pieces with her particular brand of Ginsu efficiency. If they weren't stuck in a death game, he'd honestly recommend her as a brand ambassador.  She had the right look and demeanor for it, though the adorable murder machine look might be a bit too disturbing for family-grade vidcasts. Meanwhile, he remained in a low, crouched stance already on the lookout for any additional baddies that might be spawning in the vicinity.

"Your guess might have been right on the mark.  It almost looks like this might once have been a glade where the treant and elf conflict came to a head.  Their warriors and allies would converge in places like this, duking it out until players intervened or they tore each other apart.  I've heard stories about how brutal those battles were, especially whenever their war hit a hot phase."  From a pair of nearby trees, two slender, feminine shapes emerged, their sylvan features twisted by blistering rage and pulsing red sap-laden veins that laced and marred their previously pristine skins.

"Tree spirits, deformed and corrupted by the endless violence plaguing these woods.  Let's put them down quickly and mercifully, to the extent that we can."  Flitting between the new mobs, Freyd bent and snapped their softwood limbs with a series of quick grabs and locks, splintering them at multiple points as he wove his way to their far side and drew their attention away from Katoka.  They hissed and screeched, singing their maligned songs at him like broken, cacophonic dirges for the suffering of trees.  Though his expression remained cold and calculating, something of it resonated deep in Freyd, afflicting him with some sense of their sadness.

"End it quickly," he asked Katoka.  "They're in a lot of pain."

Watching the Shadow punch and jab and break the mobs in front of her was a sad sight to Katoka. She could tell that they were in some sort of pain, real or not. These things, these glitched and broken mobs didn't deserve such a fate. It was a mercy to put them out of their misery.

The samurai stepped into a new stance, one not terribly different from the previous. With three graceful bounding steps she closed the distance between her and the Dryads just before we blade went to work once more. Now an orange light from her katana flashed as she hacked and slashed and chopped at the creatures. The fist succumbing to it's fate and shattering before her, the second looking at her with pleading eyes before it turned to take a pathetic swing at Freyd.

"Damnit," Kat cursed, "Once more Freyd." she looked to him with disappointment in her eyes, she hadn't been able to take it out like she wanted.

Locking eyes with the badly mauled mob, Freyd actually felt pity for the creature.  It's floral features actively wept as it struggled against whatever malediction had befallen its digital form.  Leaves sculpted into its skin were peeling and wilting as it moved, the very passage of the wind inflicting pain upon its blighted form.  The fact that he could see it suffering only made it worse.  What the hell am I thinking?  It's just a mob, painted and cast into a role by the system for its intended purpose: to die.

"I'm sorry," was all he said, grabbing the creature by the throat, spinning and flinging it full force into a nearby stone.  The dryad burst into a cloud of fractal motes, like dry leaves, parched and sundered by the wind into a thousand separate pieces, each one drifting towards oblivion and never likely to reach the ground.

"I really hate Cardinal, sometimes."  Freyd's fists flexed fitfully, but his facial expression remained coldly passive.  Something flickered behind his eyes, like tiny sparkling flecks of red threatening the return of a presence long subsumed.

"Are you alright?  No ill effects or injuries?"

It was a sad way to go, watching the way Freyd threw the Dryad hard enough for it to explode. However Katoka knew that they didn't have any other choice. It was kill or be killed, and these things were not actually living things like they were. She told her self this, but it didn't make her feel any better.

The samurai checked herself over and turned back to her friend, "No, I'm fine I think. You good?" She knew he had been clocked at least once during their fight but at a glance he seemed to be alright. She knew that Freyd was tough, but when it came to these corrupted mobs you could never be too careful. Kat remembered their last fight with the amalgamation that was the first floor dungeons boss. She hopped that their luck would be better this time around.

With that fleeting thought Katoka felt the ground shake very briefly beneath her feet. Then again the ground shook, small rocks and pebbles moving across the dirt in front of her. "Oh that can't be good." A boom began to follow each time the earth rattled until a hulking shape could be seen in the woods. The trees swaying each time the shape pushed past them, sending birds and other animals in various directions. "Yeah this is a big one."

The creature burst into the clearing, though it was already several heads taller than the trees as it was. The majority of it's mass was composed of what looked like stones and large boulders, though there were also various roots and tree limbs that made up the rest. At first Kat was surprised by how normal the monster seemed to be, after all everything that they've fought before had been stitched together in some sort of Frankenstein's monster type of way.

Then she saw it.

In between the cracks of the stone and the gnarled wood of the trees there were more faces. Young, old, man, woman, they were all elves. Twisted and stretched and squeezed and crushed into these spaces to fill the gaps in the mob. Katoka's mouth fell open. The contents of her stomach attempted to escape from her now wide jaw but she quickly clamped it shut. The last creature they had fought was horrible, but this was sick on a whole other level. She seethed. Her grip tightened on her sword and she launched forward, her weapon already glowing a deep crimson red.

The samurai ran between the golem's legs, attacking it's feet and ankles with a furry that she didn't know she had in her. With each swing of her sword Kat felt ever fiber in her being being used to damage this monstrosity. She couldn't let these poor souls stay trapped in this thing for long. They didn't deserve a life of pain and suffering. "FREYD." she called, her vocal chords nearly tearing at the volume of her scream. She knew she didn't have to give him anymore instruction other than that. He would know from her tone what she needed from him.

Vision swirled with a sea of ears and faces, his immediate thoughts overcome by one in particular.  Green hair scented with a unique blend of Hummingbard mixed with pungent peat and mulch from a night of humility and terror.  Shadows of the weight still pressed against his shoulder.  Freyd closed his eyes, trying to suppress something inside that threatened to swallow him whole.  His gut was wrenching at the memory of her face swallowed in a flood of pure and utter nothingness.  That same sensation gnawed at his hands, pride's genesis in sin wrapping ever tighter around them... hungry... always and forever hungry. It was hollowing.

"FREYD."

Jolted from his daze, time reeled back to normal speed and shunted him forward into overdrive.  A cry of alarm mistaken as if coming from two voices at once.  Sliding on instinct and guile, Freyd seemed to be everywhere and nowhere all at once. Shards of broken fractal bark flew in all directions, his fists pounding the golem's shell to pieces.  Prying his fingers deep beyond the surface he tore and tore, searching but not finding the thing that drove him.  Confusion.  Where?  I heard her.  She can't go through that again!  I can't not be there for her again...

More elven faces distorted by anguish and fear.  A thousand cries in the darkness like a tide swallowed in ink.  He wasn't there.  Even in the moment, he was never quite all there.

He was a liar.  Confessed to himself and to those dearest to him, though none could truly hear or fathom its significance.  Words he'd once spilled from his own mouth came back to haunt him in his waking nightmare:  This is the thing behind all lies, Freyja.  It is the harshest most immutable truth of ourselves: that nothing that happens to us defines who we are.  There is no word to describe, no feeling that can capture it entirely.  It is an illusion we weave around ourselves and title 'them', 'the world' or 'reality.'  Look around.  None of it is actually you, or me. 'What if'... is just an excuse."

Striking over and over again as gouts of orange, blood-like goo spurted at the pace of his own thundering heart.  The boss' lifeblood sprayed like a geyser over him and his rage, or madness, or both.  Feelings came at a price.  To one estranged, there were few things more dangerous.  The machine knew.  It had always known and warned.  Impulsive.  Reckless.  Vulnerable.

Across his clothed and few bits of flesh exposed to sight, echoes of faces like those in the tortured titan rose to the surface then faded within once more.  Who am I?  The question asked over and over again.  One familiar, sensible face stood unseen behind them all, his thin wireframe glasses and cherished calm and sensibility swallowed behind cacophonous noise.  Who do you want to be?

"Not again," he yelled, drumming headache preventing him from realizing his voice had left its rattled brain cage.  "NEVER.  AGAIN!!!"

Fists covered in guilt and tree marrow breached through to the other side.  Even the boss was stunned and awed, though likely more by his companion's efforts.  Realization dawned with the subtlety of a slap across the face with a wet fish.

"Oh no.  What have I done?"

A fire burned within Katoka that she hadn't felt in a long time. A rage the boiled and seethed deep within her very core. She felt the muscles in her arms become taught, as if they were a rope that had been tight into place. A rope she intended to wrap around this monster's neck and hang it with.

Kat had not retreated to a safe distance after her last attack, not like she normally did. She was being reckless, her anger making her ignore her normally guarded combat style. Once again her blade began to give off a crimson light, her sword art seemingly being fueled by her fury. She struck the golem's legs, dragging her weapon through it's granite flesh as she screamed at the effort. Stumbling forward as her blade broke free, she barely managed to catch her self before falling forward.

The samurai turned once more to face Grodak, but caught sight of Freyd instead. He looked. Haunted.

This snapped Katoka back into focus. She leapt back out of reach from her opponent and raced over to her friend. "Freyd? Freyd I'm sorry, we can't both snap right now." concern gripped her voice, "We're both ok. We just need to take care of this thing first."

Freyd's entire form pulled tight, like a spring coiled to maximum tension and ready to explode.  His hands were shaking, even as they corrupted syrupy sap spilled viscously off them leaving long goopy trails of something definitely not right.  Behind him, barely discernable in dim light and the flurry of battle, Montjoy's form shimmered uneasily.  It's edges broke rank with its caster, with bits of dark poking and prodding line something in a cocoon, pressing to get out.

Without warning, though perhaps driven by Katoka's words, the spring sprung and a flensing of furious blows ripped the maligned boss open even further.  Half of its core now lay exposed with bits of bark uncomfortably splayed and splattered across the clearing, those detached quickly fading away into dust.  Freyd punched relentlessly, tearing at the thing like some sort of feral animal fighting for its life.  She'd never seen him this out of control.  Even the rage to hunt down Carsar paled by comparison.  And his face... it was gone, swallowed by the depths of the cowl and leaving nothing but the sound of frothing breath and snarls that echoed every strike.

Something definitely felt...wrong.

Kat had never seen Freyd like this. It's like he was a different person. All the warmth and awkward humor that always surrounded him was smothered by the shadows he wielded. She could almost feel the rage radiating from him in waves.

"I need to do something, but we can't stop in the middle of a fight like this either." she gritted her teeth but readied her blade once more.

The samurai rushed in, cutting deep once more into the already severely wounded boss, making sure she avoided her friend as best as she could. The golem's HP bar continued to drop, entering the red after Kat carved it's digital flesh. Freyd wound only need to hit it once more before it was completely finished. She hoped that after that she could get him to snap out of his murderous rampage. She hoped that she wouldn't have to resort to attacking him. That thought made her blood run cold.

She didn't think she could bring herself to hurt him, but if push came to shove she would do whatever it took to bring him back to his senses.

Twisting and sweeping his leg wide, Freyd laid the hulking golem flat. Spinning himself upright in a whirlwind maneuver that ultimately drove his elbow hard against its few remaining faces.  What had once been a tree was now mostly pulp pasted all over the badly marred grove, orange sap-like splatter covering most of the ground and nearly all of Freyd from head to toe - the down side of being a close range, hands-on combatant.  Crashing crystal sounds filled the clearing as the sum total of the mob's being shattered at once to signal its demise.  Freyd fell unceremoniously the short distance to the ground, slipping through the darkness of his own shadow, only to reappear once more by stepping out from behind another nearby tree.

Dusting the last of the drifting sand-like fractal motes from his leathers, Freyd's features remained wholly obscured.

"At first I thought it might be the questline itself that might be corrupted." It was Freyd's voice, for sure, but the tone was off.  "But after I repeated the intro with Mina and fell prey to the same strange findings, it occurred that there might be another common factor."  The cowl dipped down towards the ground.  "Meet me by the Styx on floor ten and be prepared to face the Leech Lich. If we clear out his minions fast, he'll crumple like a house of cards."

Before any questions could be asked, Freyd drew forth and crushed a black crystal in his hands, vanishing in an instant.  On the far face of the tree from behind which he had previously disappeared, Katoka found words carved by clawed fingers in the bark and tinted with the same sap-like blood:

'THE THING BEHIND ALL LIES'
