[F12-PP] Break Time in Paradise <<Just for the Halibut>>

Recommended Posts

Elora accepted her delegated oar with a death grip as Katoka dished out orders. "Aye aye , captain", she answered with hawkish eyes affixed to the floorboards. None of these boards are coming loose. Not on my watch. For once in a long while, Elora found herself appointed to a more passive task. It was a nice change of pace, though admittedly a bit distressing in the wake of being surrounded by one of her greatest fears. Feeling a lack of control, she gradually inched herself closer to the center mast in search of some more stability. "So...what exactly are we planning to do once we get to these reefs? Go fishing? Dive for shells?" It was probably evident at this point that she was using small talk as a means of distraction.

The trio eventually came closer to an ocean that seemed to glow teal compared to the azure expanse that surrounded it. Elora couldn't tell if they had reached their destination or if a trick of the light gave the illusion of greater colors beneath the water's surface. Hesitantly, she crawled closer to the edge of the raft to look beneath where they were floating.

"There's so many fish!", she immediately exclaimed. After their vessel had slowed to a crawl, the waves stilled to reveal schools of vibrant fish darting around coral-covered columns. Despite the waning light, Elora was able to distinguish a multitude of sea life. For all the golden sea sponges and plum-pronged urchins that she could spot, Elora wondered just how many oddities still laid hidden beneath the deeper portions of the reef.

Keeping half an eye on their green-haired companion, Freyd sensed her resurgent anxiety.  Was it the open water?  Maybe she'd had a bad experience with sea life in her youth?

"There's so many fish!", he heard her say, wonder glossing over her worries as features softened with delight.  Thank goodness.  She'd come so far in facing her fears.

Sparing a moment to gaze upon the sparkling kaleidoscope of coral ablaze beneath them Freyd's own amazement eased his own perpetual tension, already relaxed by the gift of an unexpected getaway.  His instincts had screamed that it was too good to be true.  Of course they had, because they always expected the worst.  Such was the nature he desperately sought to deny.  It felt so good to feel alive for a change, and just enjoy a day with his friends.  Breathing deeply to capture and commemorate the moment, his eyes made to close of their own volition only to catch a glint of something in the waves.  No, not in, but below.  Abandoning the mental memento for an instant, Freyd blinked and squinted thinking it had simply been reflection upon the moving surface of the waves.  There is was again, in the coral.

"Hold this a sec," he asked Katoka, handing her his oar, voice tinged with curiosity.  Stepping casually off the edge of the raft to avoid any tipping, a twist and kick soon propelled him towards the source of mysterious glimmer. What he found only deepened the flutter from before. Glass?  Here?

He'd only been gone a moment, resurfacing bearing what looked like a bottle of green in his grasp.  Carefully climbing back onto the raft, Freyd lifted himself from the water then rolled to the deck of their improvised craft to better bear and distribute his weight.  Elora didn't need the added stress, he was certain.

"How do you suppose this got here?  It was wedged in a section of the coral."  Holding the container aloft allowed the sunset to properly alight through its translucent surface.  "No liquid inside, but... that looks like a note."

Still hopeful that the day's pleasantries could be sustained, Freyd glanced back at his companions to search their faces for guidance.  Did they dare?  Of course they did.  And soon the wax seal was pulled and stripped away from the neck, bottle flipped and contents fished out to open air.  It was a simple strip of linen, looking as if torn from a larger piece.  One edge was hemmed and monogrammed with a stylized 'R'.  Clothing?  Freyd's features darkened as he unfurled it, noting the colour of the staining font.

Barely having read the message a system prompt appeared, thanking each of them for having accepted an undisclosed quest.  And, somehow, just to make things worse, someone had suddenly decided to let the sun go out leaving them with only the sound of their breathing and disrupted blips and blups of water swirling about them in a pattern that no longer matched the soothing rhythm of the wave.

"Well... shit."

Katoka looked around as darkness enveloped them, "Uhh, wasn't the sun setting like a few seconds ago? It shouldn't be this dark already." Her voice had a hint of concern in it as she placed a hand on the hilt of her weapon. She was glad that she kept it equipped for situations just like this. Cardinal was a fickle thing that could take a nice environment and turn it deadly in a blink of an eye. This was beginning to feel like one of those situations.

"Freyd?" she asked as she exposed about and inch of her katana, electricity sparking from the weapon and giving off a soft blue glow that illuminated very little around them. "How bad is this going to be?"

The samurai's attention was drawn to the right side of the raft, the water sounding as though bubbles were rising and popping at a rate that was more in tune with something living rising from the depths. Gripping her weapon she exposed more of the blade, her anxiety building and the weapon responding in time by rapidly snapping and cracking the energy that seemed to be housed within it. Taking a step towards the edge, the light of her blade moving with her to shine on the rippling water.

A small light seemed to glow from under the water just before the head of a hideous looking angler fish broke the surface. Katoka let out a yelp of surprise and ripped her sword completely from it's sheath, the gathered energy of her now fully charged sword art connecting with the monster in front of her. She sound of thunder rumbled above them just before a bolt of lightning crashed down on the fish creature, the area around them lighting up as though it was day time. The monster seemed to sizzle before them as kat panted heavily, still not completely recovered from the surprise it had given her. "We have company!" she yelled to her friends.

Worry was palpable as the still environment shifted to one of suspense. Before she'd had the opportunity to decipher the note, the sun had swiftly plunged beneath the horizon. An obsidian sea swirled around them, glassy surface broken by the rising form of something sinister. Katoka responded with the agility of a skittering gecko. Her blade's lightning resounded with its signature crackle mere moments before a successive disturbance came from Elora's side. Panicked and surprised, the woman dove forward with her spear, its shaft igniting with static electricity as it plunged into the gut of something squishy.

A horrific screech encouraged her to yeet the thing as far away from her as quickly as possible. Body bolstered by adrenaline, she committed all of her concentration to hefting its rag-dolled form up and over her in an arc. Gravity and a great deal of fish oil caused the critter to slide off the spear and slam into the injured enemy at the other side. In an unintentionally-strategic decision, the daisy chain of electricity sent a second surge of hurt to damage and fully barbecue the disobedient piece of sushi. In the valkyrique rush, Elora had paid little notice to the third fossil fish who had completely fried before its fins had even left the water.

"WHERT THE HELL WUS THAT --?", shrieked Elora, her voice cracking at the end. An angry gurgling sound came from nearby as a gargantuan and toothy angler sputtered in place. "OH MY GOD, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!"

"Uh... ladies?  Need I remind you that electricity and wat..zzzz...YOUCH!  That smarts!"

He'd seen the familiar forms rising from the water mere moments before Katoka responded, with Elora right behind them.  Both instantly sent sparks a'flying, fraying his nerves at the potential consequences of a rickety raft full of soaking wet players might dish out against themselves as much as the monsters.  The darkness wasn't helping, though constant near-miss flashes of lightning might have helped if he didn't already have nightvision.  Instead, it was like being blinded by highbeams set loose from both side.  Something large and hefty humped at the raft from his right, prompting Freyd to roll and strike only to whiff at the tail end of the Lurker's tail.  The thing was large, but had already pass beneath them on its way to the far side.

"Kat!  Big boi headed your way.  Be ready!"

Three more fishy figures rose from the dark behind Elora as she flung one of their mates in a manner to make any trebuchet proud.  Grabbing onto the raft's edge, Freyd spun himself around in a whip kick that flung two of the offending fish-things from the ship.  The third dangled its lure just a little too close, getting it snatched and head beaten against the deck for good measure.  Using his momentum, regained his footing while ramming a knee into the thing's already-mashed maw, causing it to flop over backwards while groaning in pain.

"I'd really hoped these things wouldn't be up here, out of the swamp.  So much for that idea..."

"Big bois are my specialty!" Katoka called to Freyd as she watched the large angler fish emerge from the void like water before them. Adjusting her stance she leapt off the raft, landing on top of the monster in order to hit it more directly. However she hadn't calculated her sandals, or the slippery skin of the fish. She slid forwards, down the spine of The Lurker as she hit it with a few haphazard swings of her katana. It wasn't the blow she had hoped for, but she saw it's health bar dip considerably from her strike.

Using the ginormous fish as a spring board, she launched herself off its side and into a run across the sea water. Her trajectory curving so that she could return to the raft before she skipped across the water like a stone again. Luckily she found her destination in the dark thanks to the sparks and flashes of her friends dealing damage to the various fossil fish that had begun to crop up around them. Once again Kat hadn't put much thought into her actions as she landed on the raft safely, her momentum transferring to the water craft and sending them all spinning across the waves.

"Shit! Sorry guys!"

Moonlight swirled in a nauseating display as their vessel spun across the water's surface. Staggered steps swiftly threw Elora off-balance just as the sail's wooden beam whooshed to clock a fossil fish right in the spleen. Wrapping her spear around the base of the half-assed mast was enough to prevent her from slipping off of the raft. The injured angler swished after them, lantern bobbing above the inky expanse like some sort of drunken firefly.

"Screw this stupid fish for ruining our vacation!", barked Elora as she scrambled to her feet, "I don't care if we're on Floor 12, I'm gonna have a beach day!" Brandishing her spear with both hands, the frazzled player raised her weapon to clobber the creature just as it's gelatinous head broke through the water's surface.

"GET OUTTA MY SWAMP!", she yelled as the blunt end of her spear connected with the thing's body in an uneventful "Bonk."

A sad stream of gurgles erupted from its mouth as The Lurker slowly rolled to perch belly-side up.

"Big bois are my specialty!"

Freyd facepalmed, forgetting that his fists were covered in slimy fossil fish guts and instantly slathered himself in regret.

"Phrasing," he muttered, cheekily, doing his best to keep his mouth closed while trying to wipe the gunk away from his eyes by leaning into his shoulders, to little avail.  Too much of him was already covered in the gelatinous goo secreted by the fallen fish-fiends to do anything more than make a bad situation worse.

"Blerch... are they dead?  Please tell me they're dead.  I'm seeing everything through a trippy night vision kaleidoscope and its seriously messed up.  Kill them with Irish if you have to!"  Squinting as if it might somehow make a difference, Freyd stepped forward - straight into their improvised mast.

"GET OUTTA MY SWAMP!"

Startled by Elora's cry and the inappropriately frisky closeness of the raft, Freyd whirled, flailed, lost his balance and only just missed getting hit by the whirling of his partner's spear.  Up went sideways and everything very suddenly went from entirely blurry to troublingly inky black.

"Bonk."

Whirling around frantically while looking for the next enemy to attack, Katoka felt her shoulders relax as she came to realize that the school of demented fish had been taken care of. The sound of a splash and the now missing body of Freyd sent a jolt of panic through the samurai, causing her to leap towards the rippling water. Her arms penetrated the dark ocean in a frenzy, she called out to Elora as she felt her fingers brush against what she thought was an arm, "Elora! Man overboard! Give me a hand!"

With their combined strength they managed to haul the unconscious form of their companion back on the raft, the sight of a comically large bump on his head causing Kat to stifle a laugh. "I uh, think you might have given your boyfriend more than a love tap there." she poked his cheek to attempt to wake him, seeing his health bar barely affected she nudged her elven friend with an elbow. "Maybe you can wake prince charming with a kiss eh?" she grinned wickedly.

Even with Katoka's assistance, towing Freyd out of the water felt like shouldering a sack of cement. It took both the women's effort to bring the deceptively muscular boy back onto their ramshackled vessel. Seeing that he appeared unconscious, Elora spared no second in splashing his face with a fistful of water.

"Oh, wait --", she remarked disappointedly. Her go-to method of rehabilitation proved useless in this environment.

"Maybe you can wake prince charming with a kiss eh?"

"Hah ha, very funny!", she retorted sarcastically. A nudge of her spear still failed to rouse the delirious player. Huh, well I'm all out of ideas. Scanning the peeled planks of their raft provided a sudden incentive. "FREYD!", she shouted with a shake of his shoulders, "THE FLOTSAM & JETSAM'S FLEA MARKET! THEY'RE HAVING A SALE! 99% OFF. ALL. WARES."

image.png.094483abd3ddd5f946164b32795f3855.pngWith any luck, the promise of a steep deal on a smorgasbord of nicknacks would spur the shopaholic from his concussed slumber. Faint streaks of turquoise soon smeared across Elora's side-vision as the ocean around them began to sparkle with light. Steadily abandoning her efforts, she became mesmerized by the sight.

"Plankton!", she exclaimed, "Bioluminescent plankton! I've never seen them before!" An excited hand grasped Kat's forearm as the other pointed out to reveal the phenomenon to her friend. "There's so many of them -- oh, this'll make it so much easier to see too!!"

*HACK*

*COUGH*

*SPEW*

*WHEEEEEEZE*

"SALE?!"  Spitting out a mouthful of congealed lurker goo nearly caused him to retch as the lingering flavour lingered in the back of his throat. It might have caused him to turn green, but the plankton LED's someone had flicked on were thankfully masking his pallor.  "That's not a sale," came his groaning, muttering reply as he deftly sat upright thanks to countless ab crunches and a system that had somehow recognized past efforts.  "Those buffoons don't have sales and wouldn't recognize a bargain if you slapped them in the face with it using a sword art!  They're crooks that sell nothing but fourth-hand junk dropped by third rate mobs to anyone with more money than brains.  I swear that Billie runs the whole place as a front for recycled mats and discarded gear."  Ire was a powerful motivator, apparently, at least for Freyd's excessively mercantile nature.

"Though," he added more calmly, a sudden fondness and awkward wistfulness in his eyes, "I did find a lovely fishing hat there one time..."  Swiveling his head around a little too far made him look like an overwound anime bobble-head.  "Did we win?  Is it over?"  His eyes widened the instant memory caught up with their circumstances, snapping to focus over Elora's head.  Oh, thank goodness, she didn't turn herself orange.

"Meh... I guess it wouldn't have been a proper outing without Cardinal trying to kill us at least once.  Figures."  Criss-crossing his legs, Freyd suddenly propped himself upright using them as some sort of scissor lift without requiring any use of his arms.  "I'm just happy that you're both okay," he added with that same wry yet caring grin he often used to conceal graver concerns.

"The atmosphere is certainly nice, but I suspect that there are likely more of these things about, and our improvised lava-lamp mood lighting may not last.  Still... this was fun."  Taking a quick step off the edge of their rickety raft, he once again entered the drink the set himself to push against its edge.  "I'll push us back to shore.  Just... try not to spear me in the process, m'kay?"  He knew full well that Kat used a slashing weapon.
