The Knight took it all in stride. A veritable army assembled before him. Struggling - desperately so - to topple him. But he had an answer for everything they could throw at him. A counter to their dominance. And they buckled. Panicked as his blights seared through their entire party. Scrambled, all six, to undo that which he had done so easily. Could he feel it, Belregor would be gleeful at his vexations. He suffered through their attacks, failing to buckle. They had not broken through. Not even close.

And it must have been killing them.

Belregor raised his sword aloft. A shaft of brilliant light crashed down from on high. Divine intervention? The unleashed rage of a wrathful god? It was disorienting, eyes must be averted for fear of searing them from their sockets. But one must never take their eyes off their enemy. For those who stuck fast to that adage, you would see - bleary-eyed through the corona - the faint outline of a different blade. Blazing white fire around a black core.

This was not divine intervention, or was it the unleashed rage of a wrathful god.

Belregor had slain them. Cast them down from their pinnacle, shattered their lofty throne.

The light was his to command. After all, how could shadows lengthen without the light?

That tenebrous barrier, black as obsidian yet contradictory translucent, manifested itself. As the light fades, the ground you stand upon has become slick and crystal clear. The raw heat from the blaze turns the sand beneath your very feet to glass. You see yourself in it. You witness your own struggle, set upon a backdrop of darkness that threatens to swallow you up.

And Belregor is gone. You stand only amidst friends.
