Early Childhood
Kotori wasn't your typical girl. She was born into a wealthy family and raised in a luxury lifestyle that most people dreamed of having. Her father was a promising businessman that rarely ever visited her and was usually away on business trips. Her mother had died when she was three, so Kotori only knew about her from faint memories of playing with her and from stories she heard from the various butlers and maids that populated the beautiful house. From a young age, Kotori learned that she could usually get anything she wanted simply by asking for it. This made her very spoiled as the years went by and this spoiling was continued by her father when he rarely visited. Since she also needed to learn proper ways of being a young lady, Kotori was home-schooled and almost never saw any kids her age.

Later Life
Kotori's caregivers were primarily a butler and a maid who were a couple that served the Mutsuki household. They were intrusted to be the godmother and father in case of the death of Kotori's father and mother, although since her father was mostly away all the time, they filled the spot of the parental figure. Seeing as it wasn't fit to seperate her from other kids, the couple sent Kotori to junior high school. From he very start, Kotori was instantly surrounded by others kids who adored her and wanted to be her friend. It was a happy surprise from her lonely beginning and she loved it ever so much. This popularity continued until the day her "mother" died. The maid who had been taking care had died after falling ill to a mysterious disease. Reasonably distraught, Kotori pushed away everyone at school, telling them to leave her alone. One kid, enraged at being told so, shouted out at her that everyone only liked because of her money and looks. After that day, nobody talked to her. She was completely aone and she knew why. It was all a big scam, nobody really liked her at all, they wre simply interested because of her walth. Kotori grew drepessed and bitter from these circumstances. She never trusted anyone again, paranoid that they were using her. In a desperate try to find a friend who cared about her, Kotoria turned to blackmailing or paying others to do her bidding, such as pretending to be her friends. In an attempt to escape this paranoia, Kotori turned to video games. In those, she could lose all her problems without actually running from them. This led to her to find SAO and after convincing a servant to help her do so, she was able to buy it and actually play it.

Virtues

Intelligent: Although she was an average student with grades that never rose above yū (very good) and never fell below ryō (good), she still was a pretty clever fellow as she had plenty of time on her hand as a result of her solitude which allowed her the freedom to engage in hobbies like reading at the nearby library and studying to her heart's content, increasing her aptitude in various places.

Observant: Loneliness did give some helpful atrributes such as observing tics, movements and the speech of others. This observant nature came from her just simply gazing at people or watching kids talk and have fun with each other while she sat by herself at one of the few empty tables. This habit of observing others followed her into her later years.

Attractive: Kotori isn't one to brag about her looks and she isn't vain, but more than one person has fallen for her simply because she was very pretty or cute. It's become an advantage in manipulating others, or boys to more exact, although in other cases its a curse.

Flaws

Cynical: It didn't take much time for Kotori to begin to harbor feelings of typical of cynic as she began to find her circumstances never changing for the better, only for the worst. This attitude that the she usually gave to others in attempt to protect herself from being betrayed and being hurt beyond repair as she didn't trust the motives of others. Although she hasn't seen many people so far in SAO, she stills distrusts others with a passion.

Spoiled: Kotori typically expects things to go her away since from as far back as she can remember, it has always been that way. If she find something she likes and really want, either a few minutes or few hours later she would be seen with it.

Paranoid: Kotori still hasn't let gone of her paranoia even with people trying to change this. The actions of people trying to help her and protect even though they just met her further this. She doesn't trust people fully so she acts as if she's a normal person and just wants friend when in fact she is waiting for her "friends" to betray her. 

Manipulative: Although Kotori manipulates others with ease, she doesn't try to attempt this anymore as it usually ends badly for the person being convinced into doing things and she is trying to turn over a new leaf as to not harm others. It isn't a trait that she enjoys having either as she now sees how it effects her and others in the long run.
