Eyelids snapped open as though the mismatched eyes hidden beyond were attempting an escape. In a frenzy, they scanned the surrounding area. It was dark, so he couldn't see much; but of the features that he could make out, the familiar shape of his room slowly melted into focus. The raspy breaths that forced their way from his lungs filled the cool space with a translucent vapor, though the wisps weren't nearly as apparent as the sound of those gasps filling the chamber.
