{PP - F01} Salt of the Earth (Earning a Living: Forager)
Reytac replied to Reytac's topic in Beginner Floors
As he started moving through the forest, Reytac decided that, at the very least, he could start looking for other things, too. The whole goal of the quest was to start picking up materials after all, and the sooner he got started on it, the better. If he built up enough of a stockpile, he could hopefully use it to barter for better gear when he found someone to trade with. So Rey started combing through the woods as he walked, trying to see if he could spot any useful herbs or other materials that he could add to his hoard. But despite the fact that he was moving through a forest t -

Well, getting started on this quest was going to be easier than he had been worried about. No being sent back and forth across town to talk to different people before being able to head out - he just got handed the compass and told to go on his way. He let out a soft chuckle and shook his head once as he carefully made his way away from the camp - no need to disrupt the woman's home. He looked down at the small compass that he had been handed by her, turning it over a few times. It looked.. odd to him. A normal compass, at least the ones he was familiar with, either had a brass housing, -
Buying things was going to get expensive and quick, that much was clear to Reytac. While he was still fairly certain that the orange-haired woman, Mari, had undercharged him for the baked goods he bought from her store, even with the extra col he'd paid her, it wouldn't take many trades like that before his small stash of materials had gone the way of the dinosaurs. So he needed to start getting his own materials, not just rely on quest rewards like before. While looking for the plants had been time consuming - time was something he had plenty of. And the other alternative, fishing - didn't st

Reytac let out a cough at the fact that she was grabbing a baking tray with her bare hands - even with the pain reductions, that should have been excruciating. But - damage resistances were a thing, and she must have at least one that was affecting this. He gave a light shrug at her explanation. "I figured as much, and if I could give more I would have. I hope I can get to the point you're at some point, I want to get home to my wife. Maybe next time I come back to buy something I can pay you better. Thank you for these." He bowed to her. "Now I should get out of here before the malaise

That felt... Like it was undercutting things. Reytac hadn't gotten a crafting profession yet, but he was fairly certain that it would take more than one material to make something. And as she straightened up Reytac realized that he had actually seen her before. Not long ago, in fact, when she and a man had demolished their way straight through the Town Of Beginnings to get to the church. For a very special ceremony. He took a deep breath and exhaled and set the five materials she'd requested on the counter - and then beside it, he stacked five hundred col. "It isn't much, but hey, I'm ju

'Great big scary orange player. Looks like she had too long a night, Iike I did in college when I was pulling all-nighters.' Some of the tension eased out of Rey's shoulders. He wasn't relaxed per se, but at least not as high strung as he had been when he first saw that orange name. He could feel her eyes still on him as he moved over to the shelves, looking at the items on display. The first thing his gaze was drawn towards were white chocolate macadamia nut cookies. They looked and smelled delicious - and even better, they were in his tier range. He snatched up all three of them and se

The directions that Reytac had received had been very specific on how to look for this place. He'd been warned that the proprieteress might not be in, and he was already planning how to best get back to the safe zone and back to familiar grounds if they weren't. Thankfully the tent was very close to the safe zone, so unless something happened within a step or two, he'd be able to make it back safely. The perpetual night of the floor had felt odd at first to him, but after a few minutes of time it had actually grown kind of pleasant. Out in the real world he'd long been a night owl, and t

Finding Dorian after leaving the dock behind was almost astonishingly easy. It was almost like a mayor should have a dedicated location and people in town would actually know what that location was, instead of just an almost random alchemist or blacksmith shop. Rey pushed into the town hall, and drew the attention of a receptionist right away. "Hi there, I'm here to talk to Mayor Dorian about a task he gave me?" The young man that was sitting at the table nodded once, then gestured to his side, where there was a large, open door leading into another room that looked like a study from her -

For a long moment Peter and Reytac stared at the chest that Rey had unearthed, and then the old fisherman nudged Rey, nodding his head towards it. He blinked, about to argue that this was supposed to be the stuff for Dorian, but Peter nodded again to it. With a shrug, Rey moved over and knelt by the chest to try opening it. The lock on it didn't look complicated, just a classic, old heavy lock. But Rey didn't have a key or even a pick. As he was trying to figure out what he should do, a salt-weathered hand holding a rock came into his field of view. "Here, lad, this might do the trick." -

The old man paused in the middle of hauling a large bag of netting materials off of the boat as Reytac hurried over to him. The net bag slumped onto the brined wood of the dock as he turned to face Rey, a wide smile stretching his weathered face above his long, white beard. Rey couldn't help but feel there was a strong similarity between all three of the NPCs he'd been talking to for this quest - minus Dorian - and wondered if they were brothers. "Ho there lad, what can I do for ye?" At least this one was more pleasant than Lyle had been - and was, for the first time in this quest, actua -

With time to kill, Reytac wandered over to a nearby tavern. Unsurprisingly, there were several near the water's edge, fitting what he knew of sailors. So he had his pick, but he just went to the closest one, to get something to munch on while he waited,. Their menu was simple and straight forward, and cheap - perfect for sailors just getting back to land. Rey sat and munched on some fried fish as he watched the people on the dock. It was oddly cathartic to just people watch, even if almost everyone he was watching was an NPC. There was the odd player or two scattered in there as well, bu -

It was actually surprisingly difficult to find out where the fisherman was. Or - not necessarily where the man was, but rather where he would be. Reytac had followed the quest icon - having remembered to turn on certain helpful features like health bars - to the edge of a dock. But the problem was, there was no one there, the edge of the dock was barren, no sign of a fisherman in sight. He rubbed the back of his head and looked around, but it didn't look like the man was anywhere nearby either, making his way to his designated spot. As he looked around he did spot another NPC with the ‘F -

It was, thankfully for Reytac, still daytime when he managed to make his way back to Lyle's smithy. He had thought about going ahead and popping one of his health potions, but decided against it. If this didn't finish the quest, he was just going to rest until his passive Regen had ticked enough to heal him back up - he might be desperate to keep moving forward, but he wasn't so far gone as to be suicidal. Not yet, at least. He shook that thought off as he pushed into Lyle's shop. The sound of metal ringing on metal filled his ears, and he easily spotted Lyle working at his anvil, -

The math in his head was quick and dirty. Even if this boar hit him as hard as it could, he would live. He could take another hit, one almost twice as powerful as anything he'd been hit by so far. Which meant Reytac didn't have to slow down. He just had to hit the blasted thing. If he could just hit it, even if it lived, he should be able to take it out before he died. He wasn't paying attention to health bars, though the thought to make sure to turn the things on after this. He grabbed the boar by the tusks that were jabbing into him, and wrenched it around, slamming it to the ground. T -

Reytac was hurting, badly. These boarlets - he could very well see why so many people had died to them. Not counting his first, lucky, fight, two of them had taken him down nearly half way in just two hits! There was nothing pretty or easy about fighting in a death game - just misery, and apparently it was mostly on his part. Doing his best to focus through the waves of pain coming from his body from the impact points, he twisted, putting weight into the next swing of his hammer. The metal head of the weapon dug into the boar, and he could almost swear he saw its flesh deforming a -

Reytac knew that it would be smart of him to wait before he tried to find another of the boarlets to fight. That pushing on now, before he had a chance to recover, would be stupid. He had to stay alive to get home after all. But - he couldn't stop himself. If he slowed down now, then he would never really get momentum going. The black pit of despair would drag him back down. He had to keep moving - keep fighting. So he stood back upright, ignoring the stab of pain through his stomach, and kept moving. There had to be more of the boarlets around here, he'd already found two relativ -

Reytac recovered, holding one hand across his stomach as he winced in pain. While it wasn't like he was left with a gaping wound from the injury, having a boar tusk shoved into his stomach was far from pleasant. He wheezed out a pained gasp before he glared at the source of his pain, the little boarlet in front of him stamping one of its feet and tossing its head. Even young, the things were malicious as all get out. He could swear there was a gleam of triumph in its eye for hurting him. "Bad boar." He squeezed hard on the hammer to keep it from flying out of his hand as he darted -

Rey rolled his shoulders, feeling the muscles stretch and settle as he did. He didn't get the pop he once would have out of his right shoulder - that was a thing of his real body, and this avatar despite looking the same, just didn't.. Match it quite right. Still, the motion relieved some of the tension he felt as he looked around. The boarlet had been alone, at least that one had, but he still wanted to be careful. He had to get home, and to do that he had to be alive to do so. Reytac started walking again, his eyes sweeping the fields as he looked around. He could see Npcs movin -

Reytac stepped out into the grassy plains, testing the weight and feel of his new hammer as he moved through. It was hefty and had weight to it - straight forward and simple enough to use without training. Sure, swords might be 'sharp end go in baddie' but a hammer was 'hit it' easy. He knew that there could be more to the weapon than that, especially if he took enough of a liking to it that he wanted to learn the Sword Arts for it, but that was a concern for another time. For now, he just had to find the boarlets, and smash the boarlets. It did seem like his luck in finding the p -

Reytac let the door to Zackariah's shop close behind him as he let out a long sigh that made him sag slightly. The alchemist had handed him a bag, telling him to only open it once he’d finished up his quest for the mayor. Rey felt a burn of curiosity at what was inside, but he held off. He had thought this quest would be a fast one, find someone who owed money and grab it quick before returning to the mayor. And now, he could already see that this was turning into a travellogue - he just had to wonder if this next stage would be having him go on another fetch quest, or do something else. -
Reytac had zoned out polishing the cups, one of the beers cracked open next to him. It had been a long while since he had been around this many actual people, and he was just listening to the voices around him as he worked. His reverie was broken when someone approached, and he was just looking up when the man, who had said something at first that Rey didn't catch, spun on his heels and shouted off into the crowd. He tilted his head to one side, bemused, as the brunette spun back around after the shout. “It's what ya do when you're a quasi-invited guest at a shindig like

Reytac trudged back through the city gates with defeat in his heart. Even pushing until he walked in the gates as night settled over the city, he hadn’t been able to find another herb anywhere. Or any of the other materials that might have counted for the quest, no roots or minerals - just that one, single plant that was sitting in his inventory with its dirt still around the roots. Still, it wasn't all bad. He hadn't gotten attacked by anything out there, so aside from the sticker plant and tripping, his pain settings hadn't been tested. His boots clacked on the cobbled street as -

"Just - just one more." Reytac promised himself that as he got himself back to his feet. The sun had nearly fully set now, and soon, probably sooner than he would really like, night would fully settle and the nighttime mob rules would kick into effect. He knew that this was probably a stupid idea, he should just call it quits and head in, he already had an herb that could complete it. And that was - he didn't even have to succeed, the searching had been enough to make progress in the quest. But he was stubborn, and he felt the age old call of 'just one more couldn't hurt'. So he kept sea -

Reytac knew he could call it here, and head inside and back to the alchemist. He had put in his good faith effort on finding the materials that the alchemist had requested, and had even managed to find one. So at the very least he wasn't coming back empty handed. But he felt like that was not good enough, that there was more he could do. And so even as the sun started to dip downwards, he kept searching, hunting for any more of the materials that he could use for the quest. At this point he didn't even know that he was looking in the right place for these things, for all he knew t
