It was an unfortunate truth that some quests weren't meant to be completed by those with orange cursors, whether accidentally or through design. But sometimes he needed the experience. Or the skill. Or he wanted to be there when Mishiro did it. It was all of the above today. They hadn't been in town for very long, but Pinball's face was already slick with sweat. His black hair and warm, dark clothing did him no favors. He was dressed for shadier, sometimes colder climates. He hated the dessert. Regardless, his hood stayed up, and as soon as they had teleported into the city, Pinball had van

Pinball had wandered off into the wilderness in search of prey. He was after dire wolves. Big, bulky, and probably not belonging on the First Floor. The fun thing about being solo on lower floors is that Cardinal got to throw beefier monsters at you. But after a few minutes of searching and waiting, he found none. Not wanting to leave Acanthus on her own for too long, he'd make his way back to the clearing. He returned just as Acanthus was calling out for him. The wind blew through the trees and tugged at his cloak. Pinball lowered his hood and thoughtfully peered over Acanthus' shoulder

“Do you like Pinball?” He didn't stop walking. Though Acanthus winced at the lame question, Pinball's icy expression remained completely unchaged. "No." The forest ahead of them seemed to open up a little in the distance, the trees becoming fewer and farther apart. The path seemed to widen. They were coming upon a clearing, the forest encircling it, with a single colossal oak tree residing in the middle of it. Its branches were large, its canopy full, and it cast the whole clearing in abundant shade. It was the very one that they were searching for. Pinball's pace slowed. They

Once outside of the gates, Pinball didn't feel nearly as pressured. He nearly instantly felt more relaxed. Not only were player onlookers a worry, he really didn't appreciate getting thrown out of the city by guards. It was almost never fun. Zamek had looked to Mishiro for reassurance, and he'd found it -- kind of. Regardless of how the NPC may have felt about it, they'd accepted the quest, and made their way into the desert as a group. Pinball was already hooded, but he waited patiently for Mishiro to adjust hers. He remained quiet. So did Zamek. There didn't seem to be much trust betwe -
Dragon hunting was one of the few things that Pinball hadn't done. Partially because he'd just never gotten around to it. Partially because the only questline he knew about involving dragons had so much lore to navigate that just the thought of its undertaking gave him a headache. But this, he thought -- or hoped -- would be something different. The signature "MS" rang a bell. Pinball made the journey to Floor 25. He arrived just in time to catch sight of Morningstar, a face he recognized, conversing with someone else, a face he didn't. "Morningstar," he greeted him. His eyes darted to F

He was familiar with this routine. She exited the castle and took him by the arm, and pressed a pair of teleport crystals into his hands. He closed his eyes. Let the darkness, and then the weightlessness, envelop him. By the time he opened him, he was gone. The feeling of her hand in his own was still fresh in his memory as he slipped between houses, his dark hood pulled low over his face. There were a couple different locations the old man could spawn -- Pinball had been sure to gather information on each, and they'd split the responsibility of seeking him out methodically. Pinball hard -

Pinball disappeared in the wilderness of Floor 8, his footsteps quiet on soft earth. He twirled daggers between his fingers absentmindedly, tossing them this way and that like a juggler. His mind was completely elsewhere. He walked for about half an hour before coming to a stop at the foot of a giant tree trunk. He stowed his knives and took a seat between the roots. With a flick of his wrist, his menu appeared before him. Pinball swiped through the menus and retrieved a large, leatherbound journal from his inventory, and something to write with. He flipped through the pages. They were o -

Sewallus marched away. Morningstar didn't seem to want to pursue him. That made things a lot easier. He started to pick up the pace, now that he was off the hook -- but Morningstar called after him, and Pinball paused. There was something about the man that was uniquely tolerable... and maybe that was that he seemed fairly tolerant. It was definitely a breath of fresh air. There weren't many people he could talk to, other than Mishiro and sometimes Bahr. Most people, NPCs included, would act either (understandably) incredibly wary of his presence, or in rarer cases, just outright attack -
He'd met Acanthus a few days ago. Pinball had been looking for a performer (since he didn't really want to go back to Arabelle, and also, he wasn't sure what she was even up to these days) and Acanthus' shop was the first one he'd found. It didn't take him long to realize that she was just starting out -- both because of the low level crafts available for sale at her shop, and because she seemed pretty clueless when it came to the orange crystal floating above his head. Clueless, or fearless. Either one was dangerous. But he had a soft spot for the people trapped in the starting cities,

The beast descended upon them and Pinball found himself glad for it. It landed with enough force to cause the ground to tremble, but Morningstar leapt straight into action. He weaved expertly between the Monkey King's attacks, moving with a predetermined swiftness Pinball could only assume came from extreme confidence in his own abilities -- or maybe he just did this quest a lot, for some reason. Morningstar's blade struck true, and the Monkey King collapsed, stunned and immobile. He whirled a dagger into his hand -- a different one, this time -- and let it fly. With a resounding crack t -

"Yeah," he replied. "Pretty much." Or at least, as far as he knew. He had no desire to kill anybody. He had no reason to. He hated the thought of it. He'd quite nearly gone completely pacifist, at one point, and he probably would have stayed that way, too, if life in Aincrad wasn't so dangerous. Would he kill again in the future? He didn't think so. But Sewallus had reached his breaking point. In an outrage, he drew his weapon and pointed it at his back, demanding he be apprehended. He spoke of justice for the people that he'd killed. Pinball stopped and turned around to face him, -

He'd never been asked these things so blatantly before. He would've thought it'd make him uncomfortable. That he'd squirm under the dissection. Maybe, on a different day, he would have. Today, he almost got a sense of relief in laying it all bare. "A serial killer gone soft, I guess," he responded dryly. Outlandish answers for outlandish questions -- Pinball found himself thinking he might actually prefer it that way. "Though you could maybe call the first time an accident. It's hard to remember when I'm awake. I just say it wasn't." In his dreams, he got front row seats to that movie. A -

He had noticed the rapier at her hip. The slender sword had a curious design, but he didn't doubt its functionality. The decision to switch out of martial arts did surprise him though. Not that he was torn up about it either way -- it was her decision when it came down to it, and he was hardly the type of person to judge. He nodded. "Sounds good to me." He drank deeply from his cup and then stood, leaving what was left behind. "I'll let you get dressed. I'll be outside when you're ready." He'd start for the exit, looking forward to the sunrise and fresh morning dew. Before he left, -
<<Using x1 Yui's Grace>> He'd heard of this questline on more than one occassion. And on more than one occassion, he'd almost gone and started it -- but something always got in the way. The rewards were amazing, from what he'd read. A permanent, modular buff you got to keep forever? Sign him up. But to get that, he was going to have to undertake a gauntlet of boss fights. First things first. The tablet had been hidden in the depths of a cave, behind a secret disappearing wall of rock. He'd gone ahead and fetched it early, just in case there were other people coming

Pinball nodded. He didn't have anything else to add. They left the village in a hurry, and he was probably better off for it, too. --- They walked in silence for some time. They were hunting the Monkey King. Or the Monkey King was hunting them, apparently. He supposed it was only a matter of time. Pinball kept a respectful distance from the both of them, but he couldn't help but notice the tension in the guard's face. And the lack thereof in the player's, for that matter. Pinball's eyes were locked straight ahead. He waited for the question to come. Eventually it did. And he -

Pinball replied to Pinball's topic in Intermediate Floors
It was only when he left that he realized why the Forgotten King's words had stuck with him. He'd finally identified that strange feeling in his chest. The feeling was disgust. After everything was said and done, he was absolutely disgusted with what the quest was trying to tell him. He was a murderer. There was no doubt about that. No room for misinterpretation there. He'd spent years in isolation for it. He'd spent longer trying to atone for those sins in whatever way he possibly could, despite how impossible he knew that was. It was still rare for him to get a good night's sleep -

Two left, then the exit. He was practically there. One, two, a throw with each arm -- both knives landed, and the shades simultaneously expoded into fractals of light. Pinball whirled around, his cloak whipping behind him. The room was positively fit to burst with shades, now, and still there was only the sound of the rain. The shades ambled forward silently, featureless faces of shadow, weapons drawn, marching slowly onwards, marching towards the intruder... but Pinball wasn't about to stick around. He was done. Done with the quest and done with the room filled with enemies. Any other p -

More shades. More danger. More annoyances, more likely than not. What kind of a quest was this, again? Hadn't he finished it already? Pinball kept throwing the knives. There was only one group that was on him, and it was the one that seemed to be relentlessly marching towards him with little variance. But he was running out of time, so he tried to pick up the pace a little. Tried something new. He produced four knives in the same hand and hurled them towards the group at the same time -- which, in hindsight, was maybe not the best idea. Three of them hit, killing two, putting a third on death' -

The second group approached, and it ended up being basically more of the same. He didn't let them get close this time. They were slow, and didn't attempt to run or dodge or chase after him. Pinball kept backing up, tossing knives. One was able to lift his shield in time, through luck or through reflex, but the other three found a home in the miasmic ectoplasm of the shades. He watched the health bars drop. He kept backpedaling. The exit was not far. But his mind began to wander. The Forgotten Time King's final words had stuck with him, try as he might to ignore them. Uncomfor
