The search would not take long. Soon after arriving Seul would stumble upon another man. But before he could make an inquiry as to the nature of recent news in the area, the white-haired player would pose a question of his own. In truth it caught him off guard. Playing with one of his locs now to try and ease the discomfort, he’d mull over the strangers words only for a moment.
“Wow… I bet you’re real fun at parties…”
Soon after slinging his sarcastic response, the NPC responsible for maintaining the gardens would make her presence known to himself and the few others who had been in the area. Though knowledge of what letter she had been referring to was currently escaping him; it did at least confirm the rumors were true. People were dying.
The woman who had been listening intently was the first to speak up, causing Seul to shake his head in protest. It seemed her mindset aligned with his own; both wanting to help Mary in her time of need. Or at least, benefit from any rewards that may come from doing so. Either way, he could not let her go alone on what inevitably seemed like a dangerous road laid out before them.
“Don’t worry, Mary. No one else is dying here on our watch. Isn’t that right, Sunshine?” He’d say with a grin and a nudge to his golden-eyed acquaintance.

Ming Garden seemed to have been created for someone like him. One who opted to wander this world on his own. It was the man’s first visit, but the tranquility in the air was palpable as Seul strolled among the plants. Some time had passed since he last was on such a high floor, but something had drawn him here. Recently word spread like wildfire throughout the playerbase of strange occurrences happening here in the garden. Some claimed it may have been some sort of secret event. Others believed the location was really haunted. Having seen the horrors of this world first hand, ghosts and demons were near the bottom of his list of concerns. With that mindset, what harm could there be in finding the truth behind these rumors?
Despite being midday it was dark; save for the glow of a few lampposts dotted around the garden and the light emanating from some flowers he didn’t recognize. Where was the best place to start? There had to be someone around here with more insight to point him in the right direction.

It took a great deal of restraint for the man to not cringe at the word “guild”. He harbored no ill will toward KoB, or any other guild for that matter. Still, Seul understood just how troublesome such organizations could be. Since Opal’s betrayal and Mack’s disappearance he had avoided them like the plague.
“To be honest I’d rather be up there.” He pointed toward the ceiling, but referred to the lands far beyond it.
“It’s funny, I’ve stood on the frontlines twice now, but it only seems like I get left behind every time I show up.”
The truth was a bitter pill to swallow. His gaze shifted as he spoke, if only to keep Mari from seeing the sadness he carried. Though he had worked hard to get this far, his efforts still weren’t good enough. Seul had always lagged behind the rest of the frontline, and it had just become another thing he learned to accept. But years of inadequacy had broken something in the man. So, after abandoning all he once sought, he took on the content life of a drifter. At least that’s what he told himself while lying awake in bed at night. The real word he knew too well: Apathetic. A sickening numbness that had already taken its toll long before Seul even realized it was there. He was no hero, but instead a victim in a world made only of victims. It didn’t make him special. Busywork was all that remained for one who was trapped in an average purgatory.
“I envy you; I really do. Having a reason to keep going is… Necessary. If you wanna stay sane, anyway. I guess this is my way of looking for that reason.”

Seeing the Giant Peep had been reduced to almost a quarter of its overall health, Seul charged it again when the opportunity arose. His oversized sword bore into the sugary, sweet flesh of the creature, ripping off another sliver of health from its bar. The swordsman walked away with a sense of great joy at the way the dungeon had been unfolding. Overall the whole trip had been going smoothly and he hadn’t even taken damage during the run. What more could he really ask for in this type of scenario? He wasn’t sure, but if he did eventually think of something he wouldn’t divulge it to the rest of the party.
Stepping off to the side, he sat down cross-legged while waiting for the others to finish the boss off. It wouldn’t be long now until they were on their way to whatever else the dungeon had in store. Conserving what energy he had left seemed like the best course of action.

They were doing well against the saccharine abomination. The other members of his party had done their part too to damage the Giant Peep, and when it came time for Seul to go again, he attacked once more with the Galaxy Destroyer. Puffs of cream filling and sugar coating flew off in every direction and although his contribution was small, it would push the monster closer to deaths’ door. With his job done the swordsman retreated once more.On the sidelines he took to wiping off his sword again. Whoever designed this event in particular was strangely sadistic. Or at the very least held some kind of grudge against desserts. Even so, they were breezing through.
At times Seul marveled at how simple of a game SAO actually was. Most trials were easily overcome with the hit until it died, making coordination in groups increasingly moot the stronger a player became. Perhaps it wasn’t much different from games that allowed characters to do 9999 damage in that sense.

It seemed his words had reached her, as he hoped they would. Despite knowing nothing of the woman who sat before him, he didn’t care. Everything he’d seen thus far pointed toward her being a good person. Or at the very least, not being a cold-blooded murderer.
“Not at all. It’s rather admirable actually.”
As someone who wandered the world void of any real purpose, people like Mari served as a reminder of the great things one could accomplish with enough determination. Serving as a guide for the people was a noble goal, and one Seul could get behind. Though, he was curious just how the woman would set about accomplishing a thing many before her had tried and failed.
“But that being said, only one thing separates a dream from a goal: A plan. I’m assuming you have one?”
She was undoubtedly aware of how orange players were viewed and the various stigmas that existed against them. And what of those who didn’t believe they could be saved? Was she willing to kill again if someone were to oppose her goals? There was a fine line between being a leader and a tyrant. Which path she’d walk in the end, he could only speculate about.

Before he knew it the group had moved on to the next arena in the dungeon. Eyeing his energy bar the man shrugged. The previous fight had reduced him to less than half, but it was just one of the drawbacks that came with wielding a two-handed sword.
In the middle of the second zone sat a large creature, and it would seem that Seul would be the first to attack this time as well. Gripping his greatsword, he charged the soundly sleeping Giant Peep. Galaxy Destroyer tore into its sugary body, but rather than cut clean through, his blow almost seemed to be almost absorbed into its form. Placing a foot against the boss, he managed to pull the weapon free. All that work and only minimal damage was dealt. Saying he was disappointed would be putting mildly.
“Tag in.” After cleaning the marshmallow clumps off his sword, he’d regroup with the others to pat @Baldur and @Beat on their shoulders. “Be careful, seems like that thing is good at cushioning attacks… Well, mine anyway.”

Seul unleashed another flurry of slashes across the enemy party. The first two kobolds who stood in front shielded the others but in doing so took the full brunt of his sword’s power. On the verge of death, unable to move, and afflicted with grievous burns, what little life force remained in the pair had been quickly snuffed out. They exploded leaving behind a wealth of rewards to gather. But before the man could revel in the fruits of his labor, he’d need to finish what he started.
The two kobolds each attacked him from opposite sides. Battle healing had done its job, but the monsters were determined to reverse what healing effects had occurred. Seul grit his teeth and steeled himself for the worst. Their weapons tore past his blade and broke his defenses. At a glance it didn’t seem like the assault was anything to worry about too much, though.

In such a short time he felt he had grown so much. It had been an eventful few weeks, and Seul was eager to put his new toys to the test with some training. Recently he learned of a quest he had never taken before. One by the name <<Nature’s Treasure>>. Supposedly the monsters that spawned were more lucrative than the ones a player might otherwise find somewhere else. After asking around, the swordsman managed to locate a cavern on the 24th floor fitting the description. But when he entered he was immediately rushed by monsters.
The Barb of the Whorleater had been fastened to his back, and after removing it he unwrapped the cloth that covered the scaly tip of the greatsword. Six slashes swept across the field and managed to knock off large chunks of some of the enemy party’s health bars. Though, not being enough to slay the creatures, they quickly took to beating him with their weapons.

A sigh escaped his lips as the player pulled back their weapon. Relief washed over him, like waves on a beach. But what anxiety had been washed away was soon replaced with happiness from successfully de-escalating the situation. Seul nodded along to the stranger’s words to show he’d been listening. They were all valid points and things he’d take into account moving forward. One thing was clear: It was going to take a lot more work for his true potential to be realized.
“I won’t lose sight of what matters again. I promise you here, I will become strong to be a swordsman of the people, and to do my part to put an end to this death game.”
With that he’d grasp the blade's handle. Using his free hand, he fumbled through his inventory for a moment before materializing the bunny stamp and holding it out. It was the least he could do.
“I did say I’d trade for it. This thing can turn an ordinary piece of equipment into a demonic. If you want it it's yours.”

-
Something like this was bound to happen. After calling it a day and heading off to set up camp, Seul now found himself motionless with the blade at his throat. Even if he desired a fight, in this position his head could have easily been severed long before the getting to draw the greatsword he carried. For the time being he was at this stranger's mercy.
“I am looking for demonics, yes.” He said, while peering into the void where this person’s face should have been. They were capable, for sure.
“It happened a while ago… I was out farming on the fifth floor. I had just finished fighting and my back was turned. Figured it was another mob trying to get the drop on me while I was collecting my loot so I swung without looking. It was another player. Since he was green and I attacked first, my crystal changed. Soon after a hit from his hammer left me on the ground and immobile. But as he loomed over me, the man never revealed why he sought to take my life that day. Merely that doing so was how he earned his bread.
Through dumb luck I managed to turn the tables. Once I was on top of him I didn’t stop until he was nearly dead, and I can still remember his final words. He claimed his friends would find me, so I dealt the final blow to protect myself and to keep him from potentially going after my girlfriend at the time. I killed a man with adrenaline and out of fear. I didn’t want my story to end there or for the ones I care about to get hurt.”
Pausing for a moment, Seul tried to collect his thoughts. Since then, few knew the truth behind his orange status and here was spilling his guts to someone holding him hostage. It was somewhat cathartic.
“I don’t think he was bluffing when he said his allies would come. Though I haven’t had any encounters yet, I figure they just aren’t as eager to engage after what happened. But it's been tough going regardless. The Knights of Blood. My friends. Anemone. I left them all behind. I couldn’t face them with what I had done. I didn’t want anyone to get close to me, and in an act of symbolism I passed on my holy weapon, Maiden’s Kiss, to someone I felt was more worthy of its power. I lost what little I had in this world.
But these months spent traveling alone have taught me a great deal. Though I used to regret the road I walk, I’ve mostly made peace with my past. Now I have something to run toward rather than constantly look over my shoulder. A new guild with a dream of bolstering the frontlines so that we may all be freed of this nightmare. With them as my foundation I wish to become someone others can rely on and to return to the frontlines. But I’m still too weak as I am now. So I seek demonics as I feel they will help in achieving both of these things.”
-
Using the pommel of his blade Seul, struck the nail which would bind his note to a request board just outside of the Starting City. Under the afternoon sun, he replayed the events that had led to this moment in his mind. It all started, as most of his adventures did, with some curiosity. Seven floors had been cleared since the last time he set foot in a boss raid. To be honest, he had fallen out of touch with who was still around on the frontlines, and what loot might have been set loose into the world. Thankfully, Aincrad had no shortage of people who were willing to investigate these things and report them. If they received the right incentives, of course. Though it pained him, walking around with a lighter wallet was a small price to pay for the list of demonic drops the info broker had given him. Going over it, there seemed to be a few solid ones out of the bunch. But one in particular happened to catch his eye. The sword was supposedly powerful, and its owner was said to be shrouded in mystery. No name or discernible features were offered to the man when inquired further, effectively stopping his investigation in its tracks. But he would not lose hope.
QuoteTo My Fellow Players,
I’m currently in search of the one who acquired the last hit reward from the Floor 24 Boss raid. Though I asked around, there seems to be no information about this player’s identity available. So I will keep this brief by saying I’m offering exclusive event items in trade for the drop. If you have no use for it, and this sounds appealing, then I hope to see you soon.
Regards,
Seul
Wiping the sweat from his brow, the swordsman took a moment to admire his handiwork. How many of these had he posted over the last few days? Somewhere along the way he lost count, and with no word as of yet perhaps it was time to start considering alternative methods. Or giving up.
-
The battle was over and the spoils of war were quickly being divided between the party. Before Seul’s eyes flashed a reward screen, and without hesitation he accepted, spawning a greatsword by his side. When he grabbed the hilt the metal burst to life with a roaring flame, and the swordsman took to swinging it around with glee like a child who received a new toy. Embers trailed behind each slash from the mighty weapon, and soon he would turn his excitement to the others.
“I got a sword! A sword that can be set on fire!”
Finally, a unique weapon was in his possession. Though he wondered how well it would mesh with the build he was working toward. Glancing over its actual stats, he thought perhaps he could change the slot of bleed for something else. Having fought without accuracy for so long, he really didn’t feel like going back to just attacking blindly. In any case, it was just something to consider. Putting his new blade away, he waited to see what the group would do next.

Snow gently around him as he walked, and the grip he held on Remorse tightened in a n effort to stay warm. Despite having the survival skill, it seemed that this particular region of the fourth floor was covered in an unshakable cold. It was no wonder the monster he hunted today took up residence here. Seul still remembered his first time defeating Avalanche. The infamous player killer, Ssendom had been the one to carry him through the quest, felling the field boss with a single slash of his sword. On that day Seul swore that he’d surpass the man, and wandering here now the swordsman felt he had in some respects.
The lake where Absolute Zero spawned had been frozen over, but as he approached the ice began to move and grow as if it had a mind of its own. The battle was beginning and with no time to waste Seul drew his executioner sword to attack the creature. Absolute Zero’s icy body proved tough to crack, and his blade merely skidded off when he tried to cut. He could feel his movements slowing from the cold, but luckily the beast was slower and he was able to avoid being struck by its enormous fist for now.

Another bunny had fallen thanks to the spearman, and the fight was wrapping up it seemed. Shield was able to locate the hidden monster and when he did, Seul charged up yet another Calamity Disaster. Shining bright, his greatsword followed close behind as he neared the two creatures. A flurry of slashes unleashed upon the pair like a tempest, and although he had placed all he had into the attack, it wasn’t good enough.
Seul clenched his teeth as he fell back. Though he hadn’t faltered in any of his attacks, the damage he dealt paled in comparison to the others. Fighting alone for so long, he didn’t mind having to endure longer fights with minor power. But now seeing what others were capable of he was starting to second guess. Powerful equipment was out there in Aincrad, that much was evident. It was just a matter of finding it. With some luck, he’d come across a better weapon eventually.

“Wrong answer!” He exclaimed while dropping into his next stance.
Light enveloped the greatsword and when the bunny tank had finally fallen Seul sprang forward yet again. Though Baldur and Beat had sought to attack the healer next, it had been a trick question. The enemy had been focused on Shield making it easy for the swordsman to get close, and as sitting ducks (sitting rabbits?), Seul would be able to strike both with a single move.
Six strokes danced from his blade and tore through the monsters. He was even somewhat surprised himself as the final hit landed on the Red-Hot Bunny. Rarely did his AoEs work but when they did he enjoyed it thoroughly. His damage may not have been on par with the other weapons at play but it was a nice feeling nonetheless to see the two creatures nearly at half health now. He didn’t imagine the fight would last much longer.

The others had joined in on the onslaught but none of them had managed to actually fell the beast. Once the monsters were done with their assault they had returned to the protection of the Toffee Bunny, and seeing as its health had slightly returned Seul knew he had to act quickly. With the blade raised high he rushed the candy creature with another Galaxy Destroyer to its hip.
So far the battle was going pretty well. Baldur and Beat would no doubt be able to kill the enemy’s tank and make it open season. As he backed away the swordsman’s eyes danced across the field. Which one posed the highest threat? Ideally they would be his next target, but as Shield had absorbed all the damage it was difficult to discern one from the others.
“The tank’s almost dead! Who’s next, guys?” He shouted, wanting to gauge everyone’s opinions on the situation.

Staying quiet for most of the trip, Seul stayed toward the middle of the group with arms reclined behind his head. Regardless of what waited for them he was sure it wouldn’t pose any real issues. Eventually they’d reach the Caramel Warren, but rather than afford them time to explore the game decided to kick things off at the front door.
“My time to shine!” He yelled before sprinting past the others.
An audible ‘clang’ rang out as his sword escaped scabbard. Concentration activated causing the world around him to slow, but Seul continued to barrel toward the enemy party like a runaway train, and ecstasy gleamed in his eyes while winding up his sword art. It was only a matter of seconds before he had managed to close the distance between himself and the first rabbit that greeted them. The grip he held on the glowing greatsword tightened as it unleashed a strike from below with Galaxy Destroyer, tearing into the monster with an impressive blow.

[PP-F27] The Ghost of Ming Garden (NIGHT, Seul, Rencesvals)
in Intermediate Floors
Posted
It seemed everyone was in agreement to work together, much to the man’s delight. Seul couldn’t remember the last time he’d done anything with a party. Having spent so much time on his own after leaving the frontline, it would make for a nice change of pace. Moments like these were what he enjoyed most about the lives players manifested in this world. What more could someone ask for than fun adventures and good company? He thought it beat working a 9 to 5 at least.
Next order of business was to speak with this ‘Hound’ and see what insight he’d be able to provide. Being new to the floor he wasn’t entirely sure how long the journey might take or the subsequent search for The Green Elf. But with how quickly news spread throughout Aincrad he imagined it wouldn’t take long considering the fellow had been flapping his gums since the incident.
“Alright, friends. When’s the next supply convoy scheduled to depart?” He’d ask while fidgeting with his hair again rather than focusing on anyone in particular. He was waiting for one of the others to take the lead, clearly disinterested in the role.
