In all his time spent traveling the floors of Aincrad, Seul hadn’t gone any further than the 19th. It was shortly after he abandoned the frontlines when traveling to higher places lost any sort of charm it once had. What was the point? If not to serve some ultimate purpose then it made little sense to place himself in harm’s way. Today he would find himself wandering the upper levels though.

Word had spread among the players that a new event was underway; one that involved the collection of eggs. It seemed simple enough, just as choosing the flooded floor as his gathering spot had been. Few players would come so far for a few eggs thus competition in these parts would be scarce and the swordsman would be allowed to gather in peace. Cutting down a bush with his blade his thoughts proved true as he uncovered two eggs nestled in the dirt.

  2. Wow, this lady has issues.

The woman who blocked the road ahead was clearly distressed, but Seul couldn’t discern why. Usually when he encountered strange women mumbling out in the wilderness it was best to just not make eye contact. However curiosity would get the better of him this day.

“Uh, excuse me.” He said after approaching from behind.

Speaking up now wasn’t so much to get her attention as it was to get her to move out the way. Though he would never admit to that being so, of course. In truth Seul was not a particularly busy man anymore. When the opportunity to pass her arose he stopped. The materials he sought to scavenge and line his coffers with were going to be there regardless of when he actually arrived. But even if they weren’t, this new venture could prove to be far more lucrative anyway.

    “You seem troubled.”

  3. Despite the incessant calling, his prize never made its presence known. Like the trampled snow beneath his boots, Seul could feel his patience wearing thin and decided to hasten the pace at which he searched.  High, low, behind stumps, and in caves... He walked away from each location with empty hands. The dog was nowhere to be found and, to make matters worse, the conspiracy theorist in him had somehow been convinced along the way that the pet had never been real to begin with. The cynic in him doubted he even knew the meaning of real anymore.

What made something truly “real”? Kayaba seemed to believe it was the constant, looming threat of death and Seul (begrudgingly) agreed with his sentiments. To claim otherwise would dishonor those who had perished in this world. Yet, it was also true that this was a game. Both sick and twisted, but a game nonetheless. All things in Aincrad were mere lines of code. Even their bodies were nothing more than simulacrum; their physical forms lie comatose in the realm beyond their grasps. But real or not, consciousness existed somewhere in between these truths and thinking about the dichotomy plaguing his life often only ended with a headache.

    **** **** ****

Circling back for the fourth time, Seul was ready to give up. The dog had either died or managed to evade him long enough to might as well be considered dead. His employer would need to be content with the effort. But just as he began to rehearse his “Bad News” speech, a peculiar sound had soon caused his ears to perk up.

    “Barking.”

    **** **** ****

Seul wasn’t sure if he appeared to her as non-threatening as he had wanted to be.  The greatsword he wielded was still drawn but pointed downward after he emerged from the tree line. Stopping just short of the pair, the man decided it best to greet them before advancing closer.

    “Hope I’m not interrupting something...”

His voice retained its usual even tone, but he didn’t bother to smile. With the mask on it’s not like she would have been privy to it anyway. A closer inspection of her face didn’t gleam any useful information. He didn’t recognize her at all; that much was apparent.

“Your friend there has his family worried sick right now though.”

    @Mari

  4. The player had halted giving Seul the opportunity to greet him with a wave from atop his perch. A quick slide down the hill was all it took to close distance with the road; dust flying in every direction as he came to a stop beside the stranger. Adjusting his clothing, the wanderer began to speak.

“I like to come here to think too. It’s… Peaceful.”

Part of Seul wished to inquire further but refrained from doing so out of courtesy. It wasn’t often that he spoke with people anymore, so when it did happen making the most out of the experience was to be expected. It also wasn’t like there was anything more pressing to attend to today either.

The way forward seemed clear. This would be his first step toward becoming a man of the people. Someone who enjoyed a life of fame and heroism rather than infamy.

    @Morningstar

  5. When Seul opened his eyes the world was noticeably brighter. The new sun had come and with it another day in the floating castle was underway. Whatever sleep had crowded around the man’s eyes was quickly swept away by the strokes of his fingers and with a grunt he managed to finally sit up. Through the tent’s opening he saw only embers remained from the previous evening’s fire. While it was true that few players still stalked these lower floors, it would have been unwise to believe one such as he could be safe anywhere in Aincrad. Not unlike the dying flame, he pondered if he may have only survived the night through pure chance alone.

    “Guess I’ll get going then...”

After getting dressed in his usual attire Seul trekked further into the woods. The job was simple enough; the beloved family dog he was sent to find had last been seen in this area the day before after all. He figured it couldn’t have gotten that far and any extra money the vagrant was able to earn would be welcomed without hesitation. Seul’s whistling echoed through the trees soon after he resumed searching and even startled a nearby flock of birds into taking flight; the pale greatsword in his grasp stood ready to strike in case he was unfortunate enough to attract something less friendly than the wayward canine.

Rain? No. It was merely sweat which rolled down his cheeks and drenched the equipment that clung to his slender form. A hand rose to wipe his brow. Seul had been walking for about a watch and it was evident the hellish temperature of this particular floor was beginning to take its toll on his sanity. The eyes were even playing tricks on him now, as he could have sworn the small droplets flung from weary fingers evaporated before ever hitting the red dirt.

It was time for a break.

Many lovely stones marked the mountain trail. He chose the flattest as his improvised throne and sat crossed-legged. Looking down the slope he could make out the silhouette of Yōgan Village and couldn’t help but flash a wry grin at how far he’d come. That tailor had better have been right about this. The trek up the mountain wasn’t exactly a walk in the park and there was still quite a bit of distance that needed to be covered if he was to reach the nest before dark.

The Phoenix was a creature of myth in the real world. To hunt for one now had been almost poetic. His time in Aincrad had killed a part of him. He shambled from place to place; universally hated and feared by those he encountered. But continued on nonetheless in the hopes of seeing the day they would all be free. From the ashes of his past Seul has returned and it is for that end he wields his blade once more.

  7. [Music]

Like a phoenix from the ashes, the sun had risen from death once more to lazily soar above the first floor's horizon. Few people roamed the fields and their rolling hills at this hour; thus making an ideal time in which society's outcasts could travel with little hassle. Platitudinous thoughts such as this were why he found himself reclined here after all this time.

How long had it been since he was last here? Seul wasn't sure. But that didn't stop him from taking comfort in the familiar setting. Compared to the higher floors, it was like a dream. The sky seems bluer and the grass softer. The enemies less hostile and the people friendlier. Why anyone would want to leave at this point was beyond him.

Perhaps, though, he was merely feeling nostalgic and longing to be with people he travelled with long ago. In truth, he missed the person he was then. All that remained were good, yet fleeting memories. They were better than nothing.

    ---

Seul reflected for some time while cloud watching. He couldn't turn back time. All anyone could do was move forward. But with no ambitions or allies to speak of in this world, where could he go?

Where did he want to go?

The question echoed in his mind as he watched a man pass on the road below from atop his hill. If only he could walk like him; with purpose in each step. Following the footsteps of another might spark something anew in him. And so he did.

    @Morningstar

  8. As faithful as always, somehow his fellow players managed to find a way to screw things up even further by throwing away the deus ex machina at their fingertips. Seul was one of the few to not assault the angel while weighing the pros and cons of such an action. But once the simple question HUD appeared before his eyes the answer was clear. Without hesitation he tapped sinful, an obvious choice as he had committed the one of greatest sins of all: Murder.

"Artarmiel!” He called to the divine being.

“I may have sin, but I don't share the same sentiments as these people. I won't harm an ally only out of fear of being betrayed. The priests might warned us about you, but I've already seen how easy it is for them to become corrupt. They could have been lying. Or maybe they weren't. But what I've seen take place here, the way everyone has been acting, makes me question who the real demons are… So I'm siding with you as long as you continue to fight without guilt.”

It was clearly suicide to think he could stand against the others. But to kill her “just to be safe” was pushing things too far. Had living in a game robbed them of morality? He wasn't sure, but this wasn't the first time players were framed as the bad guys in a boss fight.

He was tired of being a bad guy.

  9. With all the pleasantries taken care of it was time to focus on the matter at hand. The job was simple enough; keep the church safe and don't die while trying to keep the church safe. Given the track record of these people, there wasn't too much to be concerned about. Sometimes the immense amount of power granted to the players made him wonder just who the true monsters in this world were.

Philosophical questions would have to wait though. The fight had started  and, well, they weren't dead yet at least. That was always a good sign. While everyone else seemed to go for hard hitting openers Seul opted for a less flashy approach. He didn't need to stay the entire army at once, just whatever stragglers happened to be unfortunate enough to cross his path.

Through the chaos his eyes settled on one demon in particular. It would be the first to die by his hands! The clang of metal leaving it's scabbard reverbed while the gap separating him from with his prey steadily closed. When he was within striking ranged he reared back and dropped a Galaxy Destroyer on the thing with a satisfied grin.

  10. Despite never dedicating his life to any sort faith Seul found himself drawn to only plot of land on the thirteenth floor that had been fortunate enough to avoid being corrupted; the religious settlement of Angel's Point. With his only beacon of direction coming from an ominous message sent by two of the townspeople he made way through the wasteland in hopes of receiving answers. What could possibly have been so bad that they'd need to scout players for help? He wasn't sure as things of this nature were far and few between. The reality of the situation would be unveiled before his eyes soon enough though.

    ***

Many other players had heeded the call it seemed. Getting lost in the conglomerate was easy as he tried to make or tails of the situation, but Seul somehow arrived in just enough time to catch the some of the details. Simply put they'd be splitting up and being a third tier meant remaining outside to protect the church would be the part he played.

    “You forgot someone.”

Frankness as clear as crystal laced the man's words while addressing @Hestia about her hasty division of the group and his subsequent exclusion. After abandoning the frontlines he was used to being left behind but to be excluded while standing right there was like adding insult to injury. Rather than push the issue further though he decided it’d be better to just move on.

“I’ll just go with the second group to make things even.” He called back before equipping the woodland armor he had been holding onto.

  11. Before any further investigation could be done the shop’s door opened once again. It was neither crafter back from whatever outing they embarked on but instead a girl who seemed rather flustered by his presence. Was that supposed to be a compliment or an insult? He chose the latter.

    Haven't seen her before.

Like rapid fire from a machine gun question after question was shot at him before ending with an introduction. A soft gaze rested on Rithe's form as she spoke; at least she was smart enough to pick up on his reason for being there and the missing NPCs. Despite her perception a half-hearted shrug was the best Seul could do in response to any inquiries with what limited information he possessed.

“Dunno where they went; they're probably out on a date or something. Might as well get comfortable if you plan on taking the quest… It could be a while.”

  12. Soft beams of afternoon sunlight trickled in through cracks in the forest canopy. With the summer season still in effect Seul welcomed any and all shade that trees on the third floor were willing to provide. Over the past few months he had taken to wandering the lower floors. Being nearly invincible against the common mobs in these areas meant he could live a relatively peaceful life outside of the game’s settlements; the stained cursor above his head acting as a clear indicator for why he might find such a scenario so desirable. It had been months since the incident, but even now the consequences of his actions that day remain.

Today would mark a new beginning though. Living in exile served as a good method for erasing his sense of purpose. In a world ruled by swords, Seul no longer had a reason to swing his blade. That had to change, but finding a new reason to live wouldn’t be so simple. At least not on his own anyway. Only through working with others would he be able to overcome whatever challenges lied ahead.  That much was clear. For now that meant maybe just doing a quest or two with those who needed help. If memory served there was a simple mission on this floor involving an armorsmithing couple based on the outskirts of Delilah. It would only be a matter of time before someone showed up there, so that seemed like a good place to start. If nothing else, it’d let him dust off Gratitude and remove any rust his sword arm might have gained from weeks of disuse.

    ---

    "Hello?"

The shop's door slowly creaked open before Seul stepped inside. It was just like how he remembered... Which actually wasn't saying much considering he barely remembered the first time he did this quest. To his surprise Griswold and Hanna were nowhere to be seen though. Maybe they were taking a lunch break? Did NPCs even take breaks?

  13. Never being one who was adept at stealth or tracking Seul decided to take a step back and let the others handle most of the work. From the way they spoke earlier, most didn't trust him anyway. That was fine with him; they were strangers and he wasn't about to give them his life story while there were more important matters at hand.

The forest canopy would do little to shield him from the storm brewing above, but even so he sat beneath a tree in an effort to avoid getting drenched once the rain started to fall. Relaxation never lasted long in Aincrad though. Some kind of chimera thing had grabbed his attention and promptly began directing him toward the base of the mountain. It was the pet of that Hestia woman who confronted him earlier.

    “Something must be happening…”

Through mumbled breaths he got up and made his way toward the rest of the group, intent on seeing for himself how the next part of this story would unfold.

  14. Worried? Were people here actually feeling scared? They were tracking an alleged criminal, sure, but Seul didn't see this as being any more dangerous than taking on one of the game's quest bosses. Aincrad was only so big and once word spreads even further, the number of places left for Wyson to hide would become limited at best.

The poor weather didn't bother Seul that much. He kind of actually liked the rain. Or at least how the world always felt once a storm had passed. At some point he had drifted toward the back of the group; his walk shifting into a leisurely stroll while listening to the others talk amongst themselves. From what he could tell it was just more of the same being repeated. Unlike at the meeting though he would be a bit more vocal about his feelings on the smear campaign being waged against Wyson.

“You both ( @Fae / @Krysta) make it sound like you're gonna just arrest him on sight without hearing his side of the story…”

  15. “And just like that the cycle continues…”

It would seem the blind were leading the blind here. This was the same narrative he had heard time and time again. Without hesitation the group denounced Wyson; slinging names like killer, low-life, and Laughing Coffin. They wanted to lock him up without knowing any of the facts. Perhaps Seul’s bias as an orange player was finally shining through, but something wasn’t adding up. There was no doubt that those players died from PvP, but could these so easily be called just the murders of a psychopath?

What if Lessa and Aereth were wrong? Wyston could have easily been just another average player. A rare item could have come into his possession; something collectors or people trying to make a quick buck would hunt him to the ends of Aincrad for. Instead of giving in, he fought back. Killing might have been the only way to make those pursuing him stop. But once he was marked as an orange player even more of an incentive was given for a bounty to be placed on his head. A prime opportunity for someone to play the role of hero for a change. Even now people were gathered here to pick up where the first twenty-seven failed. Was this really the right way to go about preventing more deaths though? Only time would tell.

    ---

While leaning against one of the far walls Seul’s eyes naturally shifted toward the woman who was running the show. In any case, things were about to get a lot more interesting around here. If he heard right then she’d be taking a group to where Wyson was spotted last. The only testimonial he needed to hear would be from the culprit himself. With that in mind it was a no-brainer deciding who he would be going with.

OOC: Going with @Lessa but lowkey on Team Wyson

  16. So you can only understand everything in a literal sense and also don't know how to form a logical argument? Noted.

I didn't blow it out of proportion. Your clarification changes nothing. If someone doesn't want their character to die then what gives you the goddamn right to say otherwise? Your precious little story? Gimmie a break.

With the old rules COUNTLESS PEOPLE HAVE DIED. Have you seen the monument of life recently? Guess not. Here I'll do the work for you and list off some: Lowenthal, Beatbox, Wardege, Opal, and Sierra. All pks. All done with consent from the parties involved beforehand. All done using thread tags. I haven't even gotten into PvE deaths. I don't know who you're trying to fool, but the act of losing characters hasn't been as scarce as you're trying to propagate it to be. Stop.

Your dnd example doesn't make sense because:

    1) It's a different game.

    2)  Our rules are the problem. This isn't an opinion, it's the objective truth. If it wasn’t then this thread wouldn’t exist.

    3) Unlike Wizards of the Coast, the staff here are actively giving YOU THE PLAYER a platform to air your grievances and help work toward improving these systems. I know you said you're insane, but surely you can understand that's kinda why we're talking here now.

    4) You say you write for the story and not the characters. Okay. How does that work? How do you tell a story without making characters for said story? You can’t. Name one successful book, movie, tv show, anime, whatever that doesn't put effort into making their characters because they're just plot devices. “This character has to die here because the plot says so and we need our death quota for this story”.

Honestly. You're pissing me off. How dare you call ME selfish. Where have you even been? Not here. You like to come in for a week and say all this then leave for months at a time. Who has to deal with these things you're proposing afterward? Us. I am not being selfish. I actually care about the people of this community. I actually want them to flourish and to not have to write in a constant state of fear because some random guy wants to get off to having his character being death edged. It is unbelievably frustrating that this is even being debated. The whole reason NK and KE tags were made was because of this exact thing. History will repeat itself and then we’ll be back at square one and have to talk about this again in a few months.

Also Endilix I'm surprised you're in favor of this. As someone who was so vehemently against the timeskip a while back I would have thought you'd be on the side of the writers and not mechanics that would hinder the creative process of you as a player. I guess you are a hypocrite.

I'm done talking about this. What you want is not collaborative writing. If consent isn't involved at all times how is that collaborative? Being good at writing or an  adaptable writer has nothing to do with this. Grow up. You wanna die, then die by yourself but don't bring these people down with you because they owe you N O T H I N G.

And staff I hope you've been following along. A community that advocates for the destruction of it's own members like what I've read in this thread will not last in the long run. Think long and hard about what you're doing here and who this will benefit. Then ask if it's worth it or not. That's all I have to say.

  17. You kids might actually be insane. What are you even doing anymore? Thread invasions? Really? This is like kicking sao-rpg when it's already down. My main issues stem from invasions so that'll be the focus for the rest of this post.

First I'd like to ask, what exactly does integrating this accomplish? Why do we need this mechanic? Because death is a thing in the sao universe? I guess, but it's not like we’ve ignored it until now. Imagine this: You and your friend are writing a thread and edgelord laughing coffin wannabe kid invades it because why not. Well now that thread is ruined and you’re forced into doing this dumb plot that you’re not even invested in. On top of that fighting is rp based only, so it's not like anything of value actually happens in the end. I don't understand this leap in logic that says randomly showing up and forcing your way into threads is good for storytelling lol. Like… Forget all the game aspects for a minute and think: If you can't tell a good story as a writer and not as a sao-rpg player, no amount of additional ridiculous game mechanics the staff cooks up will change that. If you're orange you should quit the site now. You're just kinda out of luck if five people decide they want to mess with you for “plot” reasons or because they're evil or whatever and invade your threads.

Next I want to address Endilix directly and ask again: Are. You. In. Sane? Do you even realize what you're saying? Not allowing someone to kill your character because they've been plotting to kill your character for WEEKS is selfish? What are you on? Selfish is acting like your character is the only one who should matter. That if me and my friends want to be “villains” it's our birthright to just kill you whenever we feel like it because you're a side character to us. It baffles me how you can say I wouldn't allow someone to kill me but I should be able to kill anyone because I forced the into a story forced that makes sense. The example you gave isn't so unrealistic too. “These guys wanna kill me; better put myself in a situation where they can kill me”.

“This is unfair to the players that had been hunting him” <- This about sums up my problem with this half of your post. Just stop.

The second part of your post is crazy too though. I mean the staff can already do that since now they have absolutely authority to make rulings on these things. But I will ask do you know who is running this place and what has happened in the past when you give this kind of power? Think about that, the people who've been affected by similar situations.

The old pk rules made it harder for player characters to kill each other, but at least it handled this in a clear and objective way. You didn't have to worry about some kid getting his staff buddy to just rules that you instantly died. You had to CONSENT to putting your character's life on the line, PvP and such. If they died then so be it. But the difference is there was something in place that put everyone as a members of this community on equal terms. I can't say this will do the same. Using “plot” to justify this just proves to me that you all don't know what a story is.

I want to close this post by saying as someone who has been around consistently for a little over 2 years now I am not joking when I say sao-rpg is dying. It might not be too late, but if it continues down this path there won't be anyone left except for the few zealot members who are blinded by their love of whatever they thought this place used to be.

    *SCREECHES*

  18. “If you're all so desperate to know what's up with the crystal then fine... I'm not the strongest player around, but I'm no slouch either. When you start going to the frontlines and word gets out that you're carrying some valuable loot people get desperate. They’ll do whatever it takes to get your stuff; even kill. I'm not sure who exactly the group after me is, but the guy they sent wasn't playing around when he tried to take my equipment. So I attacked him first in a panic and after he stunned me I tackled him and just kept stabbing until there were only pixels left.”

Getting up from his his seated position he stepped over to Aquila to retrieve the cursed coat he had used to initially warm the man. After putting it back on Seul turned away from the group.

“I'm not a bad person. But… I have to survive. If that means murder then so be it. I hope you all never have to experience this truth with your own hands. Still, I should get going though. Don't go falling in anymore lakes Aquila.” With that he began a slow trudge through the snow. Perhaps he was wrong about them. Maybe there really wasn't a place in this world for someone like him. The judging eyes of those around him never ceased to bore into his very being even in a place protected by the game's systems. It couldn't be helped. The path of an orange player was a lonely one; the sooner Seul made peace with that the happier he would be.

    [Seul Exits the Thread]

  19. A giant, a hippie, a klutz, and a killer all hanging out at a frozen lake in a virtual world… It sounded like the setup to a bad joke. It seemed Seul had a knack for drawing in a strange crowd these days, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact it had been quite a while since he last interacted with other players. Most tended to either avoid him outright or would only serve to slow him down while traveling. He might even say that this was “nice”, just sitting and talking for a change rather than hunting monsters.

“Wonder if anyone else will show up.” He said to no one in particular while beckoning for the two newcomers to join the conversation.

“As for why I'm here, I don't really have anywhere I belong. Not anymore anyway. Came here because I thought it'd be quiet while I think over my next move.”

  20. "C-Calm down!"

The once peaceful mood had shifted to one of distress with the man’s revelations. Seul couldn't really blame him for freaking out though; if he really had been trapped in the ice for that long then he would have missed out in quite a bit. He'd try his best to fill in any details.

“First, no the game hasn't been cleared yet… Should've been pretty obvious since we’re still here. As far as missing things goes the highest floor the clearer have reached is twenty one. It's been a slow path to the top of this place and a lot of people have even died just to get us where we are now. I'd recommend visiting the Monument of Life when you get the chance to make sure none of your friends kicked the bucket.”

Hopefully his words would be enough to alleviate some of Aquila’s worries. He couldn't imagine what it must have been like to be so behind but perhaps things were meant to turn out this way. The world of Aincrad did work in mysterious ways after all.

Before either of them could continue the conversation Seul’s ears perked up. The otherwise quiet woodlands surrounding the lake had erupted with the sound of crunching snow echoing throughout.

“We have company.” He whispered while his eyes shifted toward the source of the noise. A female player had managed to creep onto the scene without either of the men taking notice till now. Fighting back the urge to instinctively reach for his sword, Seul began to address the girl directly.

    “Do you need something?”

    @Aquila @Hito

  21. That was fast. He knew that Macradon was a skilled smith, but there was practically no time to breathe before the knight appeared with the equipment Seul requested. With a nod he accepted the trade and sent over 20,000 Col. Ultimately it was a small price to pay for some overall better gear.

“Thanks, I'm sure they will work well with what I have planned.” He said before opening his inventory. He unequipped his current weapon, replacing it with his new one, and also put on the mask. A final mod to Macradon in appreciation for his work was all he did as he pulled up the hood of his coat and turned to walk away. With these taking on quests would be far more easy than before and perhaps even prompt him to attend the next floor boss fight instead of enjoying a life of retirement and complacency.

    [Sent 20,000 Col to Macradon]

    [Obtained Gratitude & Confession]

  22. “My name isn't important. What matters is that you're alright.” He replied with a shake of his head while poking at the fire with a stick. While the fact remained he did save the man, that didn't make them friends or anything and with things like the Tracking skill along with being marked as a killer the fewer people who knew his name, the better off he would be. Hell, saving Aquila could have been a mistake for all he knew at the moment. Perhaps someone had left him for dead for a reason and now he'd go carryout whatever heinous schemes he had planned to do before getting trapped in the lake… It wasn’t like those plans, if they even exist, would affect Seul though. For now he’d just have to hope he did a good deed.

    ***

Times like these made him wish he had chosen to become a cook instead of a performer as he imagined nearly freezing to death would make anyone hungry. Feeling bad about not having anything to offer he instead he opened his inventory to look for anything he might have saved during travels. “So how did you get here, @Aquila?”
