Bent down on one knee, black armor soaked through to whatever layer was deeper than bone, Freyd was half catching his breathe, half digesting what could become a rout. Frontliners had rallied to the aid of this last patrol in responding to the threat's original emergence, and fortunately defeated it swiftly. Little time could be spared in the aftermath, as he'd risked the rest of O&I's available agents, committing them to stalling action likely beyond their means. Fewer, frailer, they'd fought with sheer audacity and somehow held just long enough for him to reach them. A narrow triumph. Too narrow. And now reports of losses were mounting as frontliner quality struggled against the surging quantity of enemies. Swiping away the multitude of soft blue holograms, each painting mostly depression, only replaced them with a view of the pervasive gloom that was the twenty-ninth floor. Lightning crackled overhead as black thunderheads collided in an atmospheric bumper car ride of celestial destruction. Static from their temperamental bouts made his spine tingle tenuously at the wisdom of clinging to the curved metal lightning rod in his hand, its tip resting inches in the ground to bear a growing burden. Beyond the ridge's edge, below, another scene of devastation where sword arts of mass destruction had laid waste to the latest horde of eldritch horrors spawn by the layer's miasmic maleficence. Decimated, but not defeated, the sinister metal-glass infection has spread between the few surviving mobs, from which spawned another spectral monstrosity within spitting distance of Ilridge's outskirts. "We're losing ground, and still have no idea where these things are coming from, or why." Calm and steady, even as he stared down at the latest abomination skulking in the narrow gorge below, Freyd felt tension building beneath every bit of correspondence. "If one of these things breaches our beachhead, they will become impossible to contain." Right. Because we're so effectively containing them already. Panicked shrieks rang out across the chasm as a group of wounded players reached the far end of the passage. They'd likely heard it had been cleared and were looking for a safe route back to town. Only three of them, he noted. Veterans and well-equipped by his accounting of their gear. These weren't tourists, but capable fighters who'd met their match, or more. Anguished faces bore fresh signs of tragic and unbearable loss. Each one of their avatar bodies bled and decayed visibly, still under ailments their polished tormenters were known to inflict. Another depleted party. Another grim loss in a growing number of unsustainable defeats. Bearded whiskers bristled with added grey as ghostly memories of a raid boss' claws ripped through his flesh and bones. Azure eyes wincing, Freyd spared only seconds to scrawl and send a hasty message: From: Freyd Channel: Ilridge Local Defense Spectral Knight near Kineallen. Send help. That trio has no time. Their nerve was shattered, sanity buckling under the floor's relentless and brooding assaults. "Someone will answer." Maybe. Sure, the swamp floor had its share of rank bogs, but at least it had some sunlight now and again. On the other hand, Floor 13 had been cloudy, but there were still some cool craggy landscapes and crumbling cityscapes to explore. This place was just...depressing. 'Nightmarish' may have been more apt a description. Elora had made no haste to come to this place. Not after Freyd's harrowing encounter with death. She hadn't been there when he had needed her most, and to imagine, rushing onto a level without safezones soon after? There'd be no higher risk to souring their cherished reunion. While she didn't pride herself in being tactical, Elora understood the advantage of waiting. The trouble was that her ambitious partner was, charmingly, the complete and utter opposite. Briskly summoning her holographic mini-map, the elven-eared woman dashed her way to a nearby waypoint. At least, it hadn't seemed all that far-off until she had come to a sudden halt above a desolate ravine. Desperate screams echoed sharply from below as Elora's hairs bristled to stand on end. Anxiously pacing the chasm's edge, she hesitated to plummet into the soupy darkness below. Surely, there had to be a safer way down, or some method to assess what the hell was actually going on in its obscured depths. Another bout of terror reverberated below, prompting Elora to action. Repelling off the steep ledge, she carved her spear into the shale walls. Sparks tore from the serrated blade as she braced her fall into the inky pit. All around her, the husks of eldritch corpses illuminated with stark and eerie shadows. Broken spiral ribcages. The hollowed out sockets of cyclopses and cerberuses alike. After what felt like only a second, her leather boots thumped against solid ground.
