[BR-F29] Paving the Way to Floor 30 [Team 2: Yuki]

Lightning struck one last time. The cool breeze slowed. The waves stilled.

The sea went quiet.

The surface domed, subtle at first. Then violent. Ripples rolled outward in perfect rings. A shape broke the surface, a silhouette against the black ocean. The pale moon reflected off the metallic figure, illuminating its features as it rose. At first, only the top of the head crested the surface: smooth, black, glinting faintly in the moonlight. Then came the shoulders, broad and tipped with spikes.

Water spilled from the knight’s armor as he climbed out of the sea. Unnaturally tall, he waded toward shore, stopping when his greaves touched dry land.

He watched his challengers. Heavy, rasping breaths came from beneath his helm, and a red glow bled from his visor.

A blood red sword formed in his grip. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He only stood there, at the edge of the sea, his haunting gaze fixed forward.

Then, all at once, the storm raged back to life, and Belregor, Guardian of the Sword, took a stance.

Deadlock | All CD values for Belregor’s abilities are made separately before he rolls to determine the effects.
Man of Glass | Every other turn starting on turn 1, at the start of Belregor’s turn he will change his appearance to match the player in your party with the lowest hatred. If you target Belregor while this effect is active, on a LD 11+ you hit Belregor. On a LD 10 or lower, you hit the party member with the lowest hatred instead.
Horrifying Visage | When an attack aimed at Belregor would critically hit (BD:9-10) the attacker must reroll and take the lower of the two rolls.
Practiced Veteran | When Belregor rolls a CD 3-5, he will change his weapon to better suit the circumstances. This alters his stat blocks to the following (which Belregor chooses before the attack is made):

FRACTAL [FRCT] | Effect: Single Target critical attack rolls of BD 9-10 deal an additional +60 unmitigated damage and can choose to have their damage split equally up to 6 enemies. The enemy mitigation used to calculate damage is the lowest among applicable targets.

Entropic Ward | When Belregor rolls a CD 6-9, he will enact a defensive translucent barrier around himself. All successful attacks made against Belregor deal -25% final damage and deal the amount reduced back to the attacker. This is treated as thorns and ends at the start of Belregor’s next turn.
Veil of Sorrow | When Belregor rolls a CD 10-12, he will fill the room with an opaque black field. Light cannot be seen and players in your party are effectively blind within. Attacks cannot be made directly to Belregor in this state, as players have no applicable target. While this effect is active, Belregor does not need to follow hatred on his next turn and instead will target based on a rolled CD made before he uses his post action. This effect fades after this attack.
Know thy Enemy | Belregor’s prior knowledge knows who to target:

• The Highest Hatred in each party decays by -1 every turn. 
• Healing done by sources outside of skills/enhancements (such as VO, VD, HB) from a target who does not have the highest hatred will yield +4 hatred provided that target has no effects that would improve hatred generation (such as Howl or Taunt). 
• If this secondary effect would occur more than once per round for each player, only the first source adds +4 hatred.

Awakened Mind | Belregor’s current attunement with the dark reduces fallen and blight damage by half (-50%).

Status Ailment Effects:
DoT | Belregor is a single entity despite being pitted against multiple parties, and as a result can only be inflicted with a single instance of each damage over time effect with the largest taking precedence. However, whenever a DoT is refreshed Belregor sustains 25% of a single turn's worth of damage from the refreshed DoT.
Shatter | Only affects players in your party when applied.
Stun | When Belregor would be stunned, instead his weapon is dropped briefly, reducing his damage by 50 as he must will his weapon to return to him. This effect cannot occur more than once per party, and is party specific.
Freeze | Belregor cannot be frozen, instead ???
Paralyze | Belregor cannot be paralyzed, instead it will remove the effects of Entropic Ward on your party's attacks until the start of Belregor’s next turn.
Focus | The critical threat range increase obtained from focus will not proc Horrifying Visage (aka the player rolls an 8 which becomes a critical through focus, it will not activate Horrifying Visage)

Alternate Conditions:
Crystal of Divine Light | Expending a use of a Crystal of Divine Light in a player's BRI will remove the effects of Veil of Sorrow for your party, ending it.
Lullaby | Has no effect on Belregor, however if used on a party member it will remove the effects of Horrifying Visage for their next attack instead of reducing their evasion.
Hiding | Attempting to hide while your party is under the effects of Veil of Sorrow will auto succeed.
Tracking | Instead of being unusable in combat, using tracking as a post action will allow you to remove the effects of man of glass for your party. Make a roll and add your searching/detect LD bonuses to the resulting LD. On a 15+ you succeed and the effect ends.

Violet held her hands together, Ember clasped between them in it's bladed form. She closed her eyes as she spoke under her breath, a quiet plea through the echo of the howling winds around them.

"Be with me, give my heart the strength to endure this fight. Give me the strength to keep the others alive, to keep them from dying under my care." One by one, each member of her team flashed through her mind. Oscar, Freyd, Yuki, Kataoka, and Ariel. The people that she was in charge of keeping around, and supporting the efforts of both Freyd and Yuki as they worked hard to keep the boss off of the rest of them.

A raging, tumultuous storm was sieging the inside of the arena, belying the difficulty of the fight that would lay ahead of the eighteen frontliners that had gathered here today. She hummed to herself, nodding at the rest of her teammates as they started walking inside.

Well this was going to be a rough one, wasn't it?

Everyone had made their moves, striding deeper into the boss arena with wary gazes, scanning for any sort of detail that might give away any potential gimmick that the boss might have. Any sort of clue, any sort of potential trap, something that would make their lives even the slightest bit easier. That would mean that they could make it out of here alive. Violet looked over at the other teams, each of the many faces surrounding her here being ones that she knew.

"Alright listen up, All of ya!" she looked at the rest of her party, a golden flare starting to build on her hand as she strode forward. Her hand tapped against each one of her teammates that she passed, the golden light leaving a handprint on the spot that she touched. "Freyd, Yuki, and I will be trying to keep the rest of you alive. This isn't going to be easy, and it never is nor will it ever be. Ariel, Kat, Oscar, you guys know what you're supposed to do. Hit the boss hard and fast, and don't let it touch you - and most importantly of all!"

the yellow light abruptly melted to a vivid pearly white - shimmering like a diamond that had a bright light pouring over it. "None of you are allowed to die, not while I'm still standing here!" The light shifted from the spots she'd touched, down towards the weapons of her teammates, wreathing each and every one in the same prismatic glow. "If anyone so much as THINKS about it and the damn boss doesn't get your ass, I'll beat you senseless later ya hear?!"

the dark expanse that stretched over the floor in front of them rippled, warbling in the calm of the raging storm that had hounded the boss arena, a stark contrast to the peace that had followed the initial turmoil. A figure had slowly started to rise from within, its gaze trained on each and every one of those who happened to be present.

It was the signal for the raid to finally commence.

When watching old kaiju movies, Katoka remembered always thinking the people that stood still and watched the monsters rise out of the ocean were idiots. They would be frozen, either in fear or confusion at whatever was happening that it was always too late for them to run away to safety. Now, after watching the massive knight clad in black armor do much of the same, Kat could honestly say she knew how they felt. There was no boss room, no entering a place to have a door shut behind you. They all stood on the beach and watched as this thing breeched the ocean's surface to face them.

"Holy hell."

A jolt of energy shot down Katoka's back as Mina's buff surged through her, knocking her out of her stupor. The samurai shook her head and set about doing what she did best, rushing in. Shooting off to the left, she surged forward as dark electricity snapped it's tendrils out from her body. The light from her sword art reflected off Belregor's armor as she leapt up and struck him with a lighting fast motion. The sound of metal striking metal gonged into the night, the echo bouncing off a building somewhere.

As Kat fell back to the beach and landed with a graceful thud. She rejoined her party with a look of confusion. "That should have done more." she cocked her head to the side. "I think he's a bit resistant to Fallen damage!"

She felt a pang of anger rise, but she pushed it back down. Now was not the time to get upset over resistances, this was a game after all.

[Ariel - The Crowned Lion 0]

The buff hit like a quiet spark through her system. It flared across her interface—brief, familiar—outlining her frame before dissolving into mist. 
No need for words. Mina would see the thanks in the nod beneath her silence.

She stepped forward instead, a faint smirk tugging at one corner of her mouth. The world had narrowed; lightning boiling overhead, seawater curling at her ankles, and the new raid boss waiting beyond the tideline like a monument built from war. His breath rasped through steel, steady and deep. The blade in his hand hummed with restrained violence.

For a heartbeat, everything stilled. Ariel moved.

Not with a cry, nor the roar of activated skills. Just a step forward... measured, quiet, as though descending the polished stairs of her family's dojo back home. Her left hand pushed aside the flowing blue hem of her kimono. The saya gleamed at her side, etched with storm clouds and shadowflame.

Draw only when the line is clean. Strike only when you’ve seen the whole arc. Don’t chase the moment: create it.

The blade remained sheathed, even as Kataoka surged ahead to her left. Ariel shifted her center, knees now kissing the wet sand. One breath, then another. Her hand settled on the hilt.

And paused.

«Nihilim’s Wrath» should’ve whispered then: eager, impatient, hungry. The cursed fang was never a passive passenger. Always growling beneath her skin, coiled with anticipation whenever danger drew near—always a half-second ahead of her instincts, always eager to cut first and speak never. Now it was quiet, in a way that unsettled her. 
What she felt was colder. Detached. Not fear, nor refusal. Recognition.

Her gaze snapped back to Belregor. The way it stood—the silence, the stillness around it. It stirred something in the weapon—something she hadn’t seen in it before.

She moved anyway. The sword would obey. It must.

One step. One draw. The blade flashed—a clean, horizontal cut, low and fluid through mist. The obsidian blade traced arcs in front of her, like ink over water. A textbook Iai slash.

It struck.

The numbers flickered. Too soft. Not blocked. Dampened. The cursed katana hissed not with triumph, but like flame recoiling from its mark.
She slid past, exhaled, and adjusted her stance. The blade trembled faintly in her grip, not eager or enraged. Just… reluctant.

“…You resisted it? You couldn't be Shadow... again?” she whispered, unable to believe it. Belregor seemed to turn.

Even cursed steel found no purchase in what was already claimed.

What was it they said about running from monsters?

Something something, you're just gonna die tired?

That was about how Oscar felt rolling up to the raid. The previous hours spent dashing around the floor, fighting knights. Babysitting. It had all taken its toll. The rain had soaked through his leathers, making them stick to his frame. Chilling him to the bone. He didn't know if it was the stress. Or if it was the constant focus. But he was too exhausted to care. Shoulders slumped forward, he took his position with the comrades that had been selected for him. It was a major departure from the way Raids usually were. They oppressive anxiety. The pins and the needles and worrying about what was coming.

But the Floor had already cashed that check. Crushed him under the weight of his own worries. Or, at the very least, did its best to. So he had nothing left. His reaction as the boss rose from The Black was no reaction at all. A deadpan stare as his eyes fell upon the trio of health bars. No awe. No moment of concern as the boss went through its first attempts to intimidate. Nothing. Nothing but-

"Ah shit, here we go again."

Oscar cocked his arm back and launched his weapon at Belregor. The blade spun horizontally, slicing through the air like a sawblade before getting stuck fast in the groove just beneath the bottom edge of the boss's helm. He couldn't even muster the care to actually walk towards the boss. Oscar flicked his wrist and the blade disappeared in a flash of light only to reappear in his hand. He'd done his part, for all the good it did.

Yuki stepped on to the beach to meet with her party just moments before Belregor rose from the waters like he was doing his best Lochness Monster impersonation. The grin on her face was one that might be out of place if it was worn by anyone but her. She listened to Mina's impassioned speech, reminiscent of the speech she would give to people who partied with her for leveling. "The boss will have to go through two titanium walls if it wants to kill one of you. Play it safe and stay out of the way of the one with the most aggro on the boss to reduce any avoidable cleaves hitting you. Other than that, you all know the drill by now!"

Yuki would take the front of the line and raise her lance ready for combat. Normally she would go straight for the damage, especially when under the effects of Press the Attack, but this was the real fight and she needed to make sure that she was the one being constantly targeted. Didn't want a repeat of last time where she messed up all of her skills and inventory. So, she howled -- Aggressively. "Hey, you call that puny butter knife a sword?! You'd be lucky to scratch my armor with something so dull! Haha!"

Dismissing the beacon of warmth and ghostly illumination with the wave of black plated gauntlet, Freyd breathed deep the damp, dead darkness of the dulled sea. Roiling, yet flat, it’s surface revealed no evidence of depth.  Salt wafted, stinging the tongue.  Like bitter tears welling up from the tainted land itself, a notion occurred that the island might be wading in a soup of its own liquidated mobs. A lovely thought. Eyes adjusting to absence near instantly, light’s vacation felt more familiar than ever.  That alone was already disturbing.

Mina barked her orders. Her hand’s blessing welcomed with a silent, recognizing nod of thanks. Mandatory motivation delivered with well-meaning jocular threat, it still felt a little cringeworthy to recall pre-echoing similar words at the last raid’s opening. 

"None of you are allowed to die, not while I'm still standing here!"

“Feeling a little called out,” Freyd muttered mirthlessly under his breath, cowl uncharacteristically resting on his shoulders.  If recent suspicions proved true, fate would call him to confront this face to familiar face, or at least behind a mask of regularly scheduled broadcasting. Standing stoically, hand resting on the hilt of a freshly forged instrument, eyes scanned The Black for signs of what had been hinted and foretold.  Had the snippets been correctly interpreted?  They’d find out soon enough.

As if beckoned by clouds of collective and personal doubts sheltered behind blind hopeful aspirations, a vast obsidian figure rose from the maelstrom.  Its armor too closely mirrored his own for comfort. Slick, as if wreathed in the very void he’d grown too accustomed to wielding, only its closed helm and the subtleties of style truly marked them as separate.  Even now, the very girding shell he’d carved to repel and negate felt drawn towards their enemy. 

Not good.

Katoka races in with zeal and fury in equal measure, blade flashing like a lightning strike. The graceful weapon’s strike thrilled more than it should, sending a tingle up his arm.  The same place his fellow captain had just struck.  Empathic sensation?  Appraiser’s eyes narrowed to harness their focus, jaw set to conceal simmering evidence of concern.

"I think he's a bit resistant to Fallen damage!"

Ariel bursts into motion, opposite in action and direction to Katoka’s initial blitz and catching the enemy on its far side. Freyd knew the Lion’s strides and strikes well enough after so many raids together.  Actions yielded similar, dampened results.  

“…You resisted it? You couldn't be Shadow... again?”

There it was, whispered as suspicion by another. Ever since their arrival on this floor something had felt uncannily reminiscent in the nature of its off-ness. Forcefully ejected from Nemo’s infested realm, Freyd had since borne the very same fear. If not Shadow, than another manifest vestige of the same malevolence.  Every few floors, the same sinister presence clad in proxy to its previous kin.

Yuki howled, calling out the boss’ soul-withering presence with a burst of sheer brash bravado.  It nearly made Freyd smile, the urge tempered by a separate gloom seeping up from within. Something forsaken and forgotten, yet undeniably embraced. Would it reclaim its place, or be cast aside for good?  

“Like the darkness, do you?  Then maybe we should give you a little light.”

Unsheathing the ghostly blue-white blade from its sheath, Freyd declared his choice: Pride had been set aside.  A quick salute with the blade to the Thing Behind All Lies.

"Memento Mori. Remember, you must die.”

An instant later, wielder and weapon joined in the frey, setting a freezing white flame to the terrifying semblance of tangible darkness.

A bow danced across the strings of a violin. A mélange of voices rose through the storm. On the shore of the north sea, music stirred the raid party to life.

Belregor held in spite of the tandem onslaught of the players. A white veil folded over his body: a glassy shield, visible for only a moment. Then, his form twitched. The code beyond the game scrambled, and so did his form. It differed for each group.

For some, he became a battle-hardened adventurer. His helm morphed into a blaze of wild green hair. His eyes were those of a hunter; sharp and everwatchful.

For others, he changed to a seasoned duelist. She was not brutish like the berserker before, but carried a similar intrinsic ferocity. One red eye fixed on the battlefield, the other hidden beneath a black eyepatch.

Or, a warrior, light and fair. Blackened armor turned silver. Blonde locks fell below her shoulders. She was the very meaning of strength and hope.

With stolen faces, Belregor charged his foes.

Freyd shook his head, finger pinching his nose as the vaunted raid boss made one of the classic blunders by shifting forms in plain sight.  Mina had been locked in his sights since Yuki had stepped forth to engage with the enemy.  

"Ugh... I'm gonna go out on a limb here, gang, and tell you all that this here's our real healer."  Thumb jerked over his left shoulder, he could still feel the pulsing power from her earlier buff tethering the group back to its point of origin.

"Pro tip," he added, addressing the false vision and pointing a stray finger up towards his right eye - the same one it had covered by a mostly matching path.  "Mina wears her patch on the other eye.  Rookie mistake."  Belregor gave up the ghost, his first attempt having failed rather spectacularly.  "Or skill issue?  Did poppa Kayaba call it an early night and not bother finishing that bit of code?  Sloppy.  Just last your last step."  Skill burning the last remnants of the boss' illusion away, Freyd simply stood aside and left it to the rest of his group to do what they came to do.  His bit this raid looked like it was mostly going to involve shoveling out spotty snark and cheerleading.

The paladin rushed quickly along the sand to get the boss to turn away from the group. A tactic that just made it easier for everyone. If the boss had a surprise cleave then no one but her got caught in it by accident and they didn't have to take the scenic route to stay out of his vision.

His vision was now solely pink! That blade would find purchase on the paladin's shield -- which happened to be her left-handed gauntlet -- and stopped quicker than a car crashing into a steel wall. The smile faded quickly from the tank's face as she saw her health bar, which just as quickly jumped to 100% from 99.9%. Her eyes traced the HUD, alerting her that Oscar was close to taking his attention. Better make sure she gets a good lead before attacks start coming out. "Really? Put some goddamn power behind that noodle arm of yours!" Her hand would repel the blade from her shield and her foot would connect with his chest to create some space for her lance to make work when her cool-down was ready. "Flimsy butter knife wasn't even a joke!"

Around this time, Yuki was starting to hear... K-Pop? That was Korean lyrics right? Only a short moment passed with her eyes off the boss to locate it's source(the song was a banger by the way) but when she locked back in there was two Minas! "Uwa?! Mina?! Did you get hit with a cloning ray?!" Then just as quickly as her comment came out of her mouth, Freyd called the black swordsman out. "Oh-! That makes sense. You're not Mina you tricky little jerk!"

It was the pounding of the bass that drew his attention. Oscar turned his head, craning his neck up to peer off into the distance. He didn't have to, mind you. The only person on the beach as tall as him was Belregor. Which was weird and he hated it. Was that... singing?

Who the -? More importantly, why the-. And also when the-.

Blue eyes flashed yellow as he activated his Searching skill. The landscape zoomed in, like a pair of invisible binoculars. He focused on the stage and the performance. And that little red-haired idiot in the corner busy flinging oil onto a pot of wood. And despite how tired he was, Oscar actually cracked a smile.

"Alright then," he said as he cocked back his arm. "Guess we have cheerleaders. Can't let em down now."

He flung his sword. Divine Rancor blazed to life, arcing with white lightning as it spun like a sawblade towards Belregor. It collided with a dark barrier of force, bolts of lightning sparking off in all directions. But what happens when you flick on a light switch?

The shadows hide.

Divine Rancor cleaved through that ward with a pulse of energy. The blowback sent Belregor staggering back a step, Divine Rancor sailing off in the opposite direction. Honestly, if Oscar had a moment to pat himself on the back, he thought it was pretty damn cool.

Until he felt that pressure rippling from the crown of his head and halfway down his shoulders. He didn't need to reach up to know what had happened. Badass stocks were in free fall. He was feeling bullish on shenanigans. After all, how else could he feel about being stabbed in the head with his own sword?

"Guys, be honest," he said sheepishly. "How bad is it?"

[Ariel - The Crowned Lion 0]

The music reached her like an echo underwater—muted, distant. But something in it resonated. A note drawn across bone, or maybe memory. Whatever it was, it settled just beneath her ribs, and for a moment, her stance firmed.

Then came the change.

Belregor shimmered. The code stuttered—and Mina stood where he had been. Not her stance. Not her silence. But her face. Hair swept in a ponytail, one eye patched, the other gleaming red. Even in mimicry, it wasn’t right. Too rigid. Too deliberate. Like an actor wearing a borrowed mask.

Ariel’s breath caught, but she didn’t move. The instinct wasn’t fear. It was calculation. She watched the clone—not just with her eyes, but with the lines of data outlining markers across her interface. One of them pulsed differently. Glitched. Her fingers tensed on the hilt. He was hiding behind the likeness.

Freyd’s words confirmed it.

He easily found the false form, not that it tried too hard to blend beyond the copy, and the illusion shattered. The shimmer dispersed, Belregor’s true figure returning in its full, massive shape. Ariel didn’t look his way. She looked toward Freyd instead—just for a breath. 'tracking mod', she thought. Smart. And no hesitation in his words.

Others moved next. Oscar’s blade cut in and out with thoughtless ease. Yuki’s voice rang through the storm, taunting the beast with that wild defiance only she could pull off.

Ariel followed.

Not with a cry. A calculated charge to close the distance. Just the draw of breath, the soft slide of her foot, the quiet certainty of motion. One practiced, deliberate step after another—water hissing as it parted around her, the long hem of her kimono trailing like dusk behind her.

The arc came clean.

Her draw was precise, controlled—the textbook form of a Shirajishi-ryū kata, twisted slightly into its modern interpretation: «Iai • Second Moon». Her obsidian blade blurred low, then snapped upward into a second sweeping cut, sharp and seamless. No dark flames accompanied it. Fallen did not answer her this time.

But she had never needed its 'blessing.'

The strike landed with only the weight of her skill behind the blade. The veil split beneath her slash, and Belregor’s form seemed to stutter again—then hold.

Then—resistance.

A shudder rippled back up her arms. Not from the impact. From something else. A mirrored force, half-seen and ill-defined, pushed back. A jagged aftershock lit her HP bar with a flicker as damage clawed its way up from the strike—her own strike, turned against her. Luckily not the full force.

She slid to a stop just beyond his reach. Sword lowered. Breathing steady.

Her eyes narrowed as the last glimmer of white shimmer peeled from his frame. It had felt like a reflection—her own technique, her own stance, returned distorted. Not blocked. Echoed.

She did not speak. She did not flinch.

Let the music play. Let him wear stolen faces.

Ariel would remain herself—and strike true.

Goosebumps spread over Katoka's body as music pumped its way across the battlefield. She felt a grin spread across her face, yeah this would work as a battle track. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the boss change in front of them. It's form shifting to Mina's, though slightly off. "Didn't anyone teach you that if you're going to change your shape you probably shouldn't do it right in front of everyone?"

She rushed in once again, her hair fluttering behind her. After a few steps she vanished, reappearing in front of Belregor as her katana once again struck the knight. The off sounding clang of metal on metal followed by black lighting striking the knight echoed through the area. Her sword bounced back, taking her off guard. It had hit some sort of barrier before hitting the knight. She had been surprised enough that the weapon cracked her right between the eyes, the samurai letting out an audible "Guh!" in response.

Kat retreated to her party once again, clicking her tongue in frustration. Her Fallen had procced again but she could tell it wasn't as effective. Not to mention whatever the hell that shield was that she had hit. "Stupid boss with its stupid barrier." she grumbled.

At least her team had Yuki. She had always heard of the tank from the other frontliners, hell she had heard about her from others too. The pink clad woman was probably one of the mist famous tanks on Aincrad. She grinned again, between her and Freyd this thing didn't stand a chance.

Violet felt her skin start to crawl as she watched the boss take on her appearance. The nerve of this guy, snatching up the mechanic of a quest mob just to further frighten the other raiders - to act as a deterrent, a hope that friends would be too afraid to strike their own in order to handle the threat. Freyd, however, had almost instantly called the boss out - shattering the illusion in an instant. It made sense, seeing as how he wore many faces on a whim.

compared to what her friend could do, it was a pathetic imitation that didn't even capture her image properly.

"Mm... that's gonna get old pretty fast, I think." Violet strode forward, patting Oscar on the back - a pearly pink glow soothing his wounds as she did so. "That ward the boss has is gonna be a problem. Freyd, keep a close eye on that bastard! We still don't know what tricks this bastard has up its sleeves!"
