  1. It was adorable how Freyd thought they were going to be bringing this boat back. Didn't he know that the cove was blocked by a pirate ship? Probably not. Either way, by the time Freyd had jumped on board, Oscar was already at full sail. He was making engine noises with his mouth while he turned the wheel side to side. The ship was getting faster, the dock a mere speck on behind them as Oscar steered them out into open ocean. On the other side of the bay was a cove where the pirates usually moored their ship and counted their ill-gotten gains. Oscar had chosen this ship specifically because of the massive amount of gunpowder in the hold. "Not much," Oscar replied. "Just getting ready to blow some fools to kingdom come." The cove was in sight. Oscar set the ship on a collision course with the pirate's vessel parked perpendicular to the entrance. He tied the wheel down with some rope that was just lying around and then ducked below deck. He was gone for a moment, but when he came back, he had a barrel of gunpowder under his arm and was creating a trail to the front of the ship. "Hey, uh. You might wanna get ready to boogie."

With that, he tapped the haft of Tesseleth's Fury on the deck. A black spark ignited the gunpowder, which started to burn swiftly along the trail he'd made below decks. The ship's trajectory remained true and, before long, Oscar could make out the whites of the eyes of the pirates unfortunate enough to still be on the ship. "CHOO CHOO MOTHA FUCKAS!" With that battle cry, his ship collided with the pirates'. At that moment, the gunpowder below deck ignited, turning both ships into a massive fireball. It was a scene out of a B-rate Action Movie. Oscar fell in slow motion, camera cutting about twenty-five different times before he finally landed on the ground and tucked into a forward somersault. The pirates before him were shocked at his sudden arrival and didn't immediately skewer him out of existence. He popped up on his feet, readied his weapon, and said with a smile. "Hope that thing was insured." Oscar wasn't at all worried about Freyd. Dude was probably fine.

  2. <<Incognito Assassination>>

Oscar figured now was as good a time as any to knock out his last quest on Floor 24. The last one had been a total pain, so he didn't have high hopes for this one. He'd heard in passing that Freyd had been one of the lucky few to wrangle this quest. Oscar sent a quick message to the man, just asking what to expect from the quest mobs. It didn't take long before Freyd fired back at him. Oscar opened the message and almost immediately frowned.

HAHAHAHA- Good luck hitting anything. Boss ignores accuracy.

What kind of game-breaking mob ignored accuracy? Oscar didn't have the time to ponder the shitty game design. All he could do was make the best of a bad situation. The best here being that he buffed his damage as high as it could go so that when he did hit, the mob felt it. He didn't bother with anything else. Normally, he would feel rather exposed being at almost half his usual amount of Mitigation. But, he wanted a challenge. Plus, if the mobs were that threatening, Freyd would have told him so. He might be a smooth operator, but at least Oscar could trust he would prefer not to get someone killed over a prank. With his preparations done, Oscar warped up to Floor 24 and accepted the quest - at long last - from the Chief.

  3. It didn't take Oscar and his buddy long to reach the Teleportation Platform. Leeroy and Jenkins arrived before him, sitting dutifully on the stone dias and wagging their tails excitedly. Oscar patted them both on the head and then trigger the transport sequence. Floor 24 was left in the dust and they arrived home on Floor 7 in short order. Oscar and his familiar headed up the same trail that they took every time they had to come and go from town. Eventually, Oscar's estate stretched out in front of them. The pair wasted no time heading inside. Once there, Leeroy and Jenkins dashed for the kitchen as Oscar set his axe by the door and hung his coat up on the rack to the left of it. He let out a small chuckle and rolled up his sleeves, getting ready to prep the steak to end all steaks for his most trustworthy companion. He'd certainly earned it. That was 300 words now instead of 150. What a great day.

  4. Finally, Oscar reached a decision about what he was going to do about the next quest. And that was: nothing. He really didn't have the energy to take on an entire additional quest today and he really wanted to get home to his bed. Leeroy and Jenkins had devolved into chasing their tails, which was strange considering Jenkins' propensity to not do silly stuff like they. They must have been so incredibly bored. Oscar looked down at them with a knowing smile and gestured towards the town square where the Teleportation Platform was. "Come on guys. Lets go get you two a nice juicy steak." At the word "steak" the two of them yipped happily and dashed off towards the platform. Oscar chuckled and followed along. They were a handful when steak was involved. But they had earned it. After all, mentioning them helped me squeeze out an entire extra post when I'm running low on ideas.

  5. Once Oscar had completely inhaled the contents of the cart, he decided to meander for a bit. He hadn't really spent much time on Floor 24. Other than the Rhino. And that meeting at Baldur's place. Which was completely weird. Everyone just went completely silent for months. Oscar was convinced that they had all been possessed by demons and thus he was afraid to speak at all lest they get their ritual daggers and turn his innards into outtards. Thank God that was over. It wasn't a bad place to be. It was serene and idyllic. Water as far as the eye could see. The Raid boss - by all accounts - had been a water dragon dude who was way too durable thanks to the fact it could dive 2.2 thousand meters beneath the surface and leave the party chipping away at its back fat. He hoped the next Raid wouldn't be that crazy. Oscar didn't know how much more boss grooming he had in him.

  6. The pommel hadn't been entirely unexpected. Stun was the one thing that Bahr had that Oscar couldn't compete with. Nevertheless, he wouldn't give the Crimson Marauder the satisfaction of seeing him hit the dirt. He drove his head into the stun, replying to the kinetic energy in kind. There wasn't much he could do about the status effect, but he would remain on his feet. What little damage it did to him was immediately restored thanks to Battle Healing. Of course, the same would be said of Bahr. He'd been successful in getting the both of them to pretty much the same point at which they had started. Oscar chuckled, speech having not been knocked out of him. "Don't think too hard. You'll bust a gasket."

  7. Oscar arrived at the stall and dropped his money on the counter. How much money? Not much. Only enough to buy out the shop owner's entire stock. The vendor eyed the Col with bright delight. He'd probably never seen this amount in his life. He could open an entire restaurant with what Oscar had just dropped onto his counter. Oscar began helping himself to the meats hanging from racks on the stall. As soon as he took a chain of sausages down, Oscar hoovered them into his greedy gullet. The taste was just sublime. Oscar could see himself using these sausages for his own hot dogs at some point in the future. It was just fantastic. It would really elevate his dishes to a new level. Perhaps he could con the spice blend out of the vendor. With the way the man seemed to freeze when Oscar paid him, somehow he doubted that. It didn't matter though. Oscar could recreate the flavor profile from memory. One of the perks of being a Grandmaster Cook.

  8. He left the Chief hanging as he made his exit from the chamber. He knew where the start for the next quest was and his current quest was already complete. Since he had no intentions of accepting the next one immediately, he could just leave it here for when he was ready to deal with it. Which wasn't now. Now was the time for hanging meats doled out from a suspicious wagon on the side of the road. He'd passed by it on his way to trail Uso-tsuki. The scent of the grilled meats had been intoxicating but he had a job to do. Now, he had no job to do and a bunch of Col burning a hole in his pocket. It would be a crime not to enjoy the succulent sausages on such a serene day like to day. Nothing got the mind calmer than some good ol' fashioned NPC murderation. Now he could enjoy his meal in peace. Hopefully. Sometimes, life had a way of throwing curveballs.

  9. "Remember our last duel," Oscar asked as the timer hit zero. "When you advised me to have a bit more finesse?"

Oscar blazed forward, the ground beneath where his feet had once been exploding in a geyser of dust and stone in response to his sudden acceleration. Oscar blazed forward, axe gleaming dangerously in the sunlight. Oscar stepped past the Crimson Marauder, hooking his weapon around the man's neck. His momentum allowed him to use the weapon as a lever, pulling Bahr off his feet. He stopped suddenly and pulled up on the weapon, carrying his axe - and Bahr - up over his head and slamming him down into the ground. He unhooked his weapon from his man's neck and in one fluid motion, swiped him across the chest with Money Shot's deadly blade. Though Bahr was prone, he was still dangerous. Using his momentary advantage to its fullest, Oscar delivered a swift kick to his gut. The force of the blow generated a burst of wind as Bahr was blasted away from him in the direction of the tree. As his back would slam into its trunk, he would hear Oscar call out.

    "Does that work?"

  10. "I could probably take him out for you," Oscar said calmly. "Keeps you from having to get your hands dirty. After all, outsiders like me come in and wreck up the place all the time. Chalk it up to the rising crime rate in the area." Oscar shrugged his shoulders. "Might even give you the perfect excuse to tighten the noose around Uso-tsuki's coconspirators."  It really wasn't a bad deal for the Chief. Perhaps that was why as soon as he'd clicked through the quest complete interface, another popped up in short succession. But Oscar refrained from taking that particular quest on. He'd already done his one quest for the day, so there was no way in Hell he was taking on another. At least not before he got some lunch. There was some food made by ths tribe that he absolutely had to sample before going on about his day. Maybe he'd double back and hit up the Chief. Maybe he'd just come back some other day. He really didn't know. All depended on where the day took him.

  11. Oscar shuddered. Something about Bahr preaching about wisdom was just... wrong. If there had been some ripple in the universe caused by Oscar's complete disregard for the sanctity of human life, a singularity had probably manifested somewhere in the far reaches of space at this paradoxical anomaly that Oscar had just born witness to. If only it were in a more immediate proximity. At least then he would have been spared this pretentious lecture. It was about the second use of "wisdom" that Oscar started holding up his hand and raising a finger every time Bahr repeated the phrase. He wasn't sure if "wisdoms" counted, but he threw it in there anyway just to be safe. Finally, Bahr paused to take a breath. And Oscar laughed.

"'Wisdom is knowing the limits of this wisdom?' Are you having a stroke, man?" It was clear that Oscar wasn't taking this discussion seriously. How could he? He'd just watched a layman attempt to explain human behavior to him. Him, the psychologist. It would be insulting if it hadn't been so funny. And so completely off the mark.

"And how many families has Tyson torn apart? I know a man who will never get to meet his daughter. Am I to blame for that one too? And comparing Pinball to Tyson? You can redeem a murderer. You can't redeem someone who has turned their back on redemption. Pinball is a murderer. Tyson is a monster. He might be a child, but he's already put a bullet in me once and I forgave him. There are limits to my forgiveness. And when a child is holding a gun to your head, they cease to be a child."

Oscar snapped his fingers. In a dazzling display of brilliance, the system generated for him his weapon. It wasn't Tesseleth's Fury. With Cardinal being on the fritz and letting that whole Sundered Spire thing get so out of hand that he was able to burn down a portion of the forest on Floor 3 with the Tyrant's Wrath, somehow he doubted this floor would fare little better. This situation wasn't going to be resolved with words. If Bahr's "wisdom" could overpower Oscar's wrath, perhaps then he would reconsider his course. A duel request was sent to the Crimson Marauder. "You're right, Bahr. Bad things do happen. Monsters exist. And it takes a monster to beat a monster. Your mistake was allowing me to delude you as I'd deluded myself for so many years. I am a monster the monsters fear. I am willing to do whatever is necessary to keep them in check. Tyson now, whoever replaces him tomorrow. If you're the light they shy away from, I am the darkness that swallows them. If you disagree with the course, prove to me your way is superior."

  12. The Chief took the two scraps of parchment from Oscar's hands. He read over the original missive. Then he read over the translation. Then the original. Then the translation. Each time he swapped documents, his face grew more and more red. Finally, after about the seventh swap, he crumpled up the paper and slammed his fist down on the arm of the chair. It was clear that he was trying to rein in his fury. The Chief had to be in a fairly delicate position. By Oscar's reckoning, Uso-tsuki was a high-ranking member of their society. Even though the Chief was the Chief, he couldn't just smoke one of his nobles without there being some sort of severe backlash. As the man attempt to find a solution to his problem, Oscar cleared his throat. It was evident where this quest was going. He just wanted to speed it along a bit. He didn't have the time to sit here and watch and NPC emote for 10 minutes.

  13. The massive double doors that led to the Chief's audience chambers were flung open at his arrival. A massive man sat in a rather plain, yet masterfully-crafted chair. His bicep was about the size of Oscar's thigh and he was just a head shorter than the man sitting in his chair. Intimidating would be an understatement, if it applied at all. After you'd killed a mountain and a monster that was more blade than flesh, you stopped being intimidated by humanoids. How anyone would manage to kill someone like this was beyond him though. He doubted that even Tesseleth's Fury would be able to hack through the dense muscles to hit anything vital. It was a good thing, then, that the Chief wasn't his target. Oscar approached the man, both the original missive and the translated copy in his hands. He held them out to the man, not saying anything. His task had been to gather intel and he'd done just that.

  14. Oscar was about to give Bahr shit for his late arrival, but the Crimson Marauder had already launched into his diatribe. Damn man. No 'Hi, how are you?' Oscar let out an exasperated sigh. He'd expected to be called to count for his recent actions, but he hadn't expected to be called out so quickly. Which was dumb. A lone gravestone set to a somber melody was almost poetic in its irony. Honestly, if the roles were reversed, Oscar would have wanted to "set the mood" too. But in response to Bahr's questioning - and in defiance of whatever atmosphere was being driven for - Oscar could only chuckle and shrug. He removed his sunglasses and placed them gingerly into his breast pocket. Any darkness in his eyes were a result of sleep deprivation. Not from tossing and turning in bed, locked in perpetual turmoil with his guilt, but simply from late nights in the kitchen. Some people painted in their downtime. Oscar painted with flavor. The chemistry of different flavor profiles melding together were almost mathematical in their efficiency. All this is to say, Oscar truly - from the very depths of his soul - was not at all bothered by the blood on his hands.

"What justification do you have for committing such atrocities?"

"None that need be stated to you," Oscar responded coolly. "But if you must know, I decided to become a murderer between the time they took my friend's head off his shoulders and when it hit the ground."

Oscar turned around to fully face his friend. His fiercest ally. He couldn't blame Bahr for wanting answers. And Oscar would be more than happy to oblige. Let it be a lesson in asking questions you don't want the answers to. "I've no intention of stopping either. In the days since their slaying, I've not seen even the slightest sign of Tyson's existence. This is the first time I've had the advantage and I'll continue to press it. I'll carve through his entire organization until the whole thing comes crumbling down." There was no point in hiding it. Bahr would find out sooner or later when more and more names popped up on the Monument. "I'd wade through an ocean of blood to keep my friends and allies safe. This is the same group that almost got Conciliator killed. I let you stay my hand then and I lost a friend because of it. I don't blame you though. I wasn't ready to do what needed to be done then."

  15. This was actually Oscar's first venture onto Floor 23. From the moment they touched down, the slender elves viewed them with smoldering contempt. Oscar stepped off of the platform, posture loose and relaxed. It would seem that he and Lessa had made something of a scene with their arrival with the way everyone had stopped what they were doing to stare at them.. No sense sticking around where they weren't wanted. Lessa took the first step and Oscar followed along. The pair crossed paths with an elven gentlemen to which Lessa had flashed a warm, if awkward smile. His rude dismissal - while entirely expected - rubbed Oscar the wrong way.

"It's polite to smile back when people smile at you," Oscar piped up from behind Lessa. "Though, I'd wager you wouldn't know politeness if it snapped your skinny ass like a twig." It had just been an NPC but it was always nice to see them glitch at an unexpected reaction. Oscar clapped back at their collective attempts to cow them. They didn't even have the height advantage on him, which he was certain gave them a sort of holier-than-thou demeanor. At least, it would to any real person. They were just a product of Cardinal's programming. Sophisticated though it might be, that moment where the NPC stopped completely to calculate it's next reaction was just delicious. Finally, the System seemed to have settled on something. The contempt blanched from his face as he scurried off behind them, taking great care not to meet Oscar's eyeline. Oscar chuckled, both at the elf's reaction and Lessa's comment. "They can build a bridge and get over it," he replied. "Do you think NPCs know how to build bridges?"

Things calmed down once they made it out of town. This was a high-level floor, certainly, but the interface led them on a critical path to their target. Thus, they were able to avoid all of the roaming monsters that were out and about. A cave entrance yawned before them. A fetid rot seeped out from within its depths. Oscar raised his hand to his face, biting down on one of his knuckles to prevent himself from retching. The stench was so profound that his eyes were watering. "Jesus! I've smelled some rot before but this tops it all." He almost didn't want to do the quest now. But they'd come this far. He could bathe later. Probably several times. He stepped inside of the cave, readying his weapon. His eyes fell upon the titan dwelling within. He tightened his grip and took a step forward. Only for the giant to lean to the left and rip one practically right in his face. The fresh wave of death washed over him and stopped him dead in his tracks. Oscar dropped his axe, pitched forward, and began retching. When he was finally able to get a word out, he waved Lessa towards the beast.

    "I uh... Ladies first?"

  16. Oscar was riding high off the heels of his shitpost, so he wasn't expecting Freyd to join him so quickly. In the interim, Oscar had busied himself "convincing" a sailor to take them out to the cove to deal with the pirate menace. For a town so terrorized by the high-seas bandits, they weren't very willing to help deal with the problem. Finally, Oscar had had enough and just assumed command of the boat himself. He was just stepping up to the helm - despite the captain's protests - when he saw Freyd approaching dressed like a proper pirate. Oscar waved the man over with his right while simultaneously pushing the frantic NPC away with his left. "HEY FREYD CUT THAT ROPE FOR ME WILL YA?" He was talking about the line that kept the vessel tethered to the docks of course. In order to slay the pirates, they would then need to become the pirates apparently. Oscar didn't make the rules. He just broke them.

  17. Quest

A pirate quest. But not just any pirate quest. A pirate quest that required participants to board the pirate's vessel and exterminate them with extreme prejudice. Oscar knew exactly who he wanted to run this quest with. He opened his menu, standing before the vessel that would bear him to the quest location. He quickly typed out a message and hit send. He beamed with glee at what he had just unleashed upon his friend. It seemed rather fitting considering the subject matter of the quest. Plus, it was definitely in-line with the cheesy level of humor that Freyd would have come to expect from the man at this point. That being said, somehow he doubted that Freyd would be prepared for this level of shitpost:

  18. Zandra had joined him in short order, followed shortly by Itzal - the shadowy figure from the Raid Meeting. Oscar regarded them both with a polite nod and a smile, far too busy fussing with his enchiladas to give them any more than that. Then, an unfamiliar face arrived. Over the sound of sizzling meats and the copious amounts of smoke and steam assaulting his sense, Oscar didn't really hear much of his conversation with Zandra. He did, however, hear a snippet:

"Are you and some other tier twos ready to enter the dungeon?"

A snort of laughter rose from his chest, but he wouldn't give up the ghost to the kid. Especially not with his quesadillas so close to burning. Oscar chose the most fragrant and aromatic spices to carry his food-based beacon far over the surrounding area. For when you're hunting Tier Threes, you need to cast a wide net. In short order, one was ensnared by the enchanting, artery-clogging deliciousness that was assembled upon his grill. Haine made an appearance, making a beeline straight for his cart and looking at the fruits of his labors with a ravenous glint in her eye.

    "Oooh. How much for-"

The bluenette didn't get to finish her sentence. A plate piled high with cuisine from across the border was placed in front of her. Three tacos, an enchilada, and two quesadillas were assembled around two cups - one containing a spicy salsa and the other containing fresh guacamole. Oscar spun his cooking knife around in his hand as he gave the young woman a bright smile. "One dungeon run," he replied. He stabbed his knife into the cutting board as Lessa and Riker made their appearance. Leeroy and Jenkins dashed over to their friend, spinning around playfully before finally lying on their back to show the hound their belly and shimmying back and forth.

"Glad you could make it, Lessa," Oscar said as he stepped out from behind his cart. With a snap of his fingers, two platters manifested in his hands. Each one had three hot dogs resting upon them that would confer buffs to Lessa and the new guy - Chase. "Please use these to prepare for the dungeon. Free of charge. We'll head in as soon as you guys are ready. Assuming everyone here is cool with raiding together." They were placed in front of stools that were attached-yet-not-attached to the small eating area of his cart. Then, he assembled another platter for the hooded man and gestured for him to sit and eat. "You too sneaky boy," Oscar said with a grin.

  24. The day had started just like any other. Morning coffee - more for taste and habit than any actual effects it might have had - followed by brief calisthenics. Again, more out of habit than anything else. He was midway through his breakfast - croissants stuffed with spicy sausage with a mild cheese, when he heard the telltale chime of his messenger. He slowly gnawed at the savory meal as his right hand navigated through the myriad menus and windows. Deft fingers following muscle memory quickly swiped left and right, up and down. A message window soon propagated before him. Oscar’s eyes lazily followed line by line before he sighed and licked the juice from his fingers. Again, another reflex.

    Bahr’s calling then. It’s been a while.

He began to mull things over in his head. He had a difficult decision before him. On the one hand, he’d gone through all the effort to make such a delicious breakfast. But on the other, this might have something to do with the Guild. While he considered his options, Oscar absentmindedly gnawed at his food. Before he realized what had happened, his decision had been made for him. He realized that he’d finished his food entirely too quickly. He’d scarcely even had the chance to savor the meal. The man let out a sigh as he dismissed the menu and polished off his coffee.

I suppose I’ll go see what it is he wants now.

He took his plate and mug to the kitchen, washing them and then his hands. As he toweled his hands dry, Oscar noticed in the chrome reflection of his cabinet doors that his tie was off-kilter. A simple fix. He had to retire to his room anyway to grab his things. He’d long since abandoned the domicile he’d set up for himself and Cordelia as she hadn’t been home in quite some time. He would be lying if he denied that his passion for her had cooled due to the distance. He’d grown accustomed to being on his own again. It would be just like her to come bounding through the door as if nothing were amiss. And perhaps it wasn’t. But she wouldn’t be coming home to the same man she left.

So much had changed since he’d last spoken to any of the people he held dear. While he still had a special place in his heart for them, it was mired in a deep, unending darkness. Hate tainted his very core. Wrath was his only solace. He simply could not love as deeply as he had before. But that didn’t mean he didn’t love at all. Why else would he agree to meet Bahr in a far-flung location on Floor 19. The Hill of the Cross was well out of the way of anything notable. Though, current events would explain the sudden message to meet him away from any prying eyes or ears.

Oscar reached his room and made himself presentable. He took great pains in adjusting his tie and making sure his clothing was just so. Afterward, he grabbed his trusty Money Shot and headed out the door. The walk from his home to Deepedge was rather uneventful. Oscar had claimed this route as his own and after dealing with Tyson’s goons so handily, it would be suicide to attack him on his home turf. It would be suicide regardless, but at least he could let his guard down a bit. He entered the Settlement and made a beeline straight for the Teleport Platform. A shout and a disorienting flight later, the Last Tower of Floor 19 was before him. Of course, he wouldn’t be spending long inside this marvel of engineering. He had business elsewhere.

The Hill of the Cross was not an insignificant distance away from the Settlement. But, after becoming accustomed to the uneven terrain of Floor 7, the rolling hills and plains of Floor 19 weren’t a problem. Eventually, he found himself at the tree marked with a gravestone. He looked high and low, even into the branches of the trees. But, as usual, Bahr was late. He let out a sigh and leaned back against the tree.

I suppose it can’t be helped. I do hope he realizes I have more important things to do today.
